The Vaccines
“Nørgaard”

A rip-through-your-skull punk guitar riff. Whiplash-inducing pace. A girl. Yelling. A chorus you can’t not sing along with. Instrumental break with falsetto humming. “Going steady.” A boy. The Vaccines’ single “Nørgaard” had it all. That it happened to be about an actual Danish model was a nifty side note. That it all happened in one minute and 39 seconds was the very definition of rock ‘n’ roll.

Paul Simon
“Rewrite”

It’s classic Paul Simon: The Afro-influenced backbeat. The quirky final 30 seconds of whistling. The gentle voice that is as soft as a million freshly fluffed pillows. The verses that come to life as stories right before your eyes. He’s a living legend, and this year’s So Beautiful Or So What reminded us all that he’s still got some serious songwriting abilities left in him. And of all the fantastic tales he offered in 2011, “Rewrite” was undoubtedly the best.

Pepe Deluxé
“The Storm”

Just when you thought you’d heard everything, Finnish scientists of sound Pepe Deluxé dropped “The Storm”, a beacon of analog originality in a sea of pro-tooled homogeny. This slice of cinematic surf rock is a minor character in the group’s esoteric pop opera in three parts, Queen of the Wave (due in early 2012), yet it clearly stands on its own merits, with an Analogue Systems synth bass, twangy guitar, bombastic choir refrain hailing the gods, and a tasty Joe Meek like transistor organ solo laid over a bed of funky drums and a full orchestra. Seriously epic.

Florrie
“I Took a Little Something”

Musically, the song is all sweetness and light from the ringing piano that introduces the song, an impeccable post-disco/house burst of pop euphoria from Xenomania’s house drummer. But like a lot of her contemporaries, Florrie has more complicated emotions in mind. “I need to know just one thing was never in doubt… we’re happy ever after in my head.” Doubt and bliss have rarely been as inextricable, or as potent, and the result is as suited to solitary contemplation as it is to joyful movement.

“Far Nearer”

The steel pan is a stubborn bastard that refuses to die and resists the temptation to be backed into a corner. The mid-to-late ‘naughts saw an infusion of steel pan in the short-lived and unlikely Balearic revival, but as it was it about to wither from consciousness along came the XX’s programmer Jamie Smith last year with “Far Nearer”, a gorgeous effervescent island pounder whose tropical vibe plays more like rehab than all-night party. “I feel better when / You feel better when”, the soulful but tweaked voice intones. That the verse ends with the somewhat maudlin “I have you near me” matters little, since the longing of the first two lines speaks to an absence, a melancholy indicating that he/she is not near, at least not near enough, to the singer. This track floated around for a long time as a radio rip before the red hot Numbers label put it out this year. In an age of instant gratification though, it was worth well worth the wait to have it near us.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
“The Body”

Awkwardness in your own skin is a supreme subject in music, especially so in the indie-pop bands the Pains of Being Pure at Heart musically take after. With sexual and religious matters at hand, the song plays up the shy romantic tension in their music. A soaring anthem, it epitomizes the way the Pains are shining up their influences. Its chorus “tell me again what the body’s for” is instantly iconic, feeling like it’s summarizing pop music as a whole while expressing generations of anxious youthful feelings.

Purity Ring
“Belispeak”

Purity Ring, still a fairly mysterious act, burst onto the blog scene this year with the release of three stellar tracks. “Belispeak”, the best of these songs, distills the ingredients of the duo’s electro-pop into its purest form. Corin Roddick has clearly ingested the Knife’s discography. He lays steel drum-esque synths over a lurching beat, while Megan James gets her girlish vocals chopped and pitched into an alien patchwork. The results are immediately gratifying and subtly sinister, designed to cause a panic of the dancefloor… emphasis on panic.

Coldplay
“Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall”

Drawing near-plagiaristic inspiration from an unlikely source (Peter Allen’s manic piano salsa “I Go to Rio”), the initial report from Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto offensive is a ravishing pop single. Riding successive waves of synth stabs, barricade-stomping rhythm, and Jonny Buckland’s glittering fills, “Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall” achieves a tone of effortless joy. And although it may seem incongruous in a song featuring Chris Martin expounding on the cathedrals in his heart, its greatest point of impact derives from a display of restraint. Reigning in Will Champion’s thunderous drumming until the song’s final minute is a masterstroke, and his full entrance is a rocket-booster blast propelling an airborne craft straight into the stratosphere. This ain’t no comma, it’s a full stop.

Fixers
“Crystals”

Rarely has otherwise sleepy Oxford had so good a cause for local musical pride. The city’s productive five-piece Fixers are tipped for mainstream success in no small part due to “Crystals”, their deliriously entertaining roller-coaster ride of a single which simultaneously justifies and transcends the band’s comparisons to the Beach Boys. Joining searing guitars, stereo-panning synths and a mammoth chorus results in a psychedelic experience, which like all the best ones is gripping, disorienting and instantly unforgettable.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band & The Del McCoury Band
“I’ll Fly Away”

“I’ll Fly Away” is a tune with a long history in American music; it’s a standard for New Orleans brass bands playing at jazz funerals, it’s heavily favored by gospel musicians, and has been a standard part of the bluegrass repertoire for decades. In other words, it’s thoroughly soaked in Americana, that catch-all genre that pulls from traditional American roots music forms. So, it was a perfect song for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and the Del McCoury Band to make as the centerpiece of their stellar 2011 album, American Legacies. Despite all the superb versions of this song over the years, Pres Hall and the McCoury Boys virtually stamp this classic as their very own, offering up the definitive version to stand for the ages. Soaring trumpet, swirling clarinet, soulful lead vocals, airtight bluegrass harmonies, rhythmic banjo… this is Americana at its very finest.

Radiohead
“Lotus Flower”

Introduced by Thom Yorke during some solo shows a couple of years ago, “Lotus Flower” worked great as a haunting electric guitar lullaby, but for the studio version Radiohead opt to beef up the arrangement, creating one of their most accessible songs in years. Yorke’s lingering falsetto has survived the transformation, but the tracks beauty isn’t stifled by the a web of energetic synths, pulsating beats and shuffling drum loops that now surround the vocal. And, famously, you could dance to it.

Fleet Foxes
“Helplessness Blues”

Fleet Foxes’ excellent second album Helplessness Blues has a lot of highlights, to be sure. But the album’s best song is its eponymous centerpiece, an unflinchingly earnest meditation on finding one’s place in the universe. “Helplessness Blues” starts out lean, riding on Robin Peckhold’s vocal harmonies and the relentless strum of an acoustic guitar for its first half. But then the song erupts into a massive coda: the harmonies multiply upon themselves, a few more guitars materialize, and suddenly the band’s up in the clouds. By the time they return to earth, being small and insignificant in an oversized world doesn’t seem so daunting anymore.

Adele
“Rolling in the Deep”

For those of us who didn’t know Adele’s breakthrough 19, this was the growing tremor that announced the coming of 21. For all its massive success, 21 isn’t a perfect album, as even the world’s biggest producers aren’t sure what to do with a talent this large. They should just listen to “Rolling in the Deep” more, which basically advises “get out of Adele’s way and let her do her thing.

M83
“Midnight City”

All it takes is four synthesizer notes. That’s it. Smothered in reverb, coated in ‘80s nostalgia, teetering on the edge of full-on explosion, those four notes pack more heart and energy than most albums released in 2011. But “Midnight City” is more than just a powerful introduction. On this transcendent standout from the sixth M83 album, Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Anthony Gonzalez and co-synth-scientist Justin Meldal-Johnsen build layer upon layer of keys, arena-sized drums, and vocal atmospherics (not mentioning one of the tastiest sax solos this side of a Springsteen record). The result? The synth Sistine Chapel.

Wilson Phillips is an American vocal group consisting of Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson and Chynna Phillips.

Their 1990 self-titled debut album sold over 10 million copies worldwide, and scored three number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 making the trio, at the time, the best-selling female group of all time. In 1990, the group won the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year for Hold On, and in addition was nominated for four Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.

The Wilson sisters and Phillips grew up together in Southern California in the 1970s and 1980s. The three shared a love of music and songwriting, and developed their own style of vocal harmonies. In 1989, the trio signed with SBK Records.

The group is also known for being the offspring of prominent musicians; the Wilsons are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, while Phillips’ parents are John Phillips and Michelle Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas.

Chart success

Wilson Phillips released their debut album, Wilson Phillips, in 1990. Their debut single, “Hold On”, hit #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 9, 1990, bumping Madonna’s “Vogue” off the top spot. The single was also #1 on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary and became a worldwide hit, peaking at #2 in Australia, #6 in the UK, #7 in Ireland, #10 in Sweden, and at #15 in the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland. The single also won Wilson Phillips the Billboard Music Award for Hot 100 Single of the Year for 1990.

The second and fourth singles from the album also became number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100: “Release Me” (2 weeks) and “You’re in Love” (1 week). The singles “Impulsive” and “The Dream Is Still Alive”, peaked at #4 and #12, respectively, on the Hot 100.

In 1991, they contributed a cover of “Daniel” to the tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. While not released as a single, peaked at #7 in the US Adult Contemporary chart due to strong radio airplay.

In 1992, Wilson Phillips also made history as Billboard declared their debut album the best selling album of all time by an all female group, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and selling over 5 million copies in the US and over 10 million copies worldwide, which also made Wilson Phillips, at the time, the best selling female group of all time for a single album, breaking the previous record set by The Supremes.

Chynna Phillips and her mother Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and Papas are the only mother/daughter combination to perform on separate songs that reached number one on the Billboard Charts. The Judds, Naomi and Wynnona, did it together on songs but never on separate songs.

In June 1992, Wilson Phillips released their second album, Shadows and Light. The album was deeply personal and adopted a more serious tone, with tracks exploring issues such as child abuse (“Where Are You”) and their estrangement from their fathers (“Flesh and Blood”, “All the Way From New York”). The first single, “You Won’t See Me Cry” peaked at #20 in the US and #18 in the UK, the first time they had a higher-ranking single in the UK than in the US. The album peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and was certified platinum in the US, and double platinum in Canada.

Shortly after the release of Shadows and Light, Chynna Phillips announced plans for a solo career, and the group decided to disband.

Wilson Phillips first appeared in 1990, flaunting a harmony-rich sound that helped send three singles from their first album — “Hold On,” “Release Me,” and “You’re in Love” — to the top of the Billboard charts. Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips comprised the vocal trio, whose sudden success was matched by an equally impressive pedigree. The two Wilson sisters had grown up in California with their father, Beach Boy bandleader Brian Wilson, and often made appearances on his albums throughout their childhood. Chynna’s parents, meanwhile, were John and Michelle Phillips (of seminal folk-rock band the Mamas & the Papas). Despite growing up alongside such icons, the girls first pursued separate careers in acting and modeling, only turning to music when Chynna (having been influenced by Band Aid and Farm Aid) suggested they make a charity record with other children of famous musicians. The project fell through, but it also brought the three girls together again, forming Wilson Phillips in the process.

From the outset, Wilson Phillips used their connections to partner with important figures in the music business, including producer Richard Perry (who guided the singers through their early years together) and songwriter Glen Ballard (who co-wrote most of their hits). Given their talent and networking skills, the girls signed a contract with SBK Records in 1989 and released their self-titled debut album one year later. Wilson Phillips’ mix of adult contemporary ballads and midtempo pop/rock drew some criticism for its supposedly syrupy content, but the album became a Grammy-nominated smash regardless. Three tracks were number one singles; two others, “Impulsive” and “The Dream Is Still Alive,” peaked at numbers four and 12, respectively.

Unfortunately, Wilson Phillips’ time in the spotlight was short-lived. Their sophomore album, 1992′s Shadows & Light, went platinum but quickly faded from the charts, failing to produce any Top 10 hits. Perhaps sensing an inevitable decline, Chynna Phillips announced plans for a solo career, and Wilson Phillips broke up the following year. The members pursued various interests throughout the following decade; Phillips issued her solo debut, Naked and Sacred, in 1995; the Wilson sisters partnered with their father on several projects; and Carnie hosted her own talk show.

In 2003, the musicians reunited to record California, a summery covers album that found Wilson Phillips putting their own stamp on songs by the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. The record was released in May 2004 to a modest American reception, yet it fared surprisingly well in New Zealand, where the trio’s cover of “Go Your Own Way” topped the adult contemporary charts. Wilson Phillips reunited again in 2008 a pair of live performances in California. A holiday-themed album featuring production from longtime friend Glen Ballard followed in 2010.

Born: September 21, 1967

One of the biggest female country stars of the ’90s and 2000s, Faith Hill also took advantage of the inroads Shania Twain made into pop territory, becoming an enormous crossover success by the end of the millennium. Of course, Hill’s movie star good looks certainly helped her cause, and her much-celebrated marriage to fellow country star Tim McGraw gave her career an extra kick of glamour and mystique. Hill may not have appealed to country purists, but she had the star power of a diva even before her pop success.

Faith Hill was born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967, in Jackson, MS, and grew up in the nearby small town of Star. She was singing for her family as young as age three and first performed publicly at a 4-H luncheon when she was seven. Hill spent much of her childhood singing wherever the opportunity arose, influenced primarily by Reba McEntire, and at age 17 formed a band that played local rodeos. At 19, she quit college and moved to Nashville to make it as a singer, first finding work selling T-shirts.

During this time, she was married briefly to music executive Dan Hill. Eventually she was hired as a secretary at a music publishing firm, where she was discovered by accident while singing to herself one day. Encouraged by company head Gary Morris, Hill became a demo singer for the firm and also performed professionally as a harmony vocalist behind singer/songwriter/producer Gary Burr, who produced Hill’s own demo tape. A Warner Brothers executive caught Burr and Hill’s act at a Nashville club, and wound up signing Hill to a solo deal.

Hill released her debut album, Take Me as I Am, in late 1993, with producer Scott Hendricks at the helm. Success wasn’t long in coming; the lead single “Wild One” raced up the country charts en route to a four-week run at number one early the next year, making her the first female country singer in 30 years to top the charts for that long with her debut single. The follow-up, a countrified cover of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” also hit number one, as did the album’s title track, and Take Me as I Am wound up selling over three million copies.

Hill was set to build on her success right away, but had to undergo surgery on her vocal cords, which delayed the recording of her next album. Nevertheless, the wait wasn’t unreasonable, and It Matters to Me appeared in the summer of 1995. The title track became her fourth number one country single, and it was accompanied by a string of Top Ten hits that helped push initial sales of the album past the three million mark.

Hill was by now a firmly established country hitmaker, and she continued her active touring schedule by teaming up with Tim McGraw in 1996 for the Spontaneous Combustion Tour. It was an apt name, as Hill married McGraw that October. The couple’s first child, daughter Gracie, was born in May of 1997, and not long after, their duet “It’s Your Love” — recorded for McGraw’s Everywhere album — was burning up the country charts, staying at number one for six weeks.

Hill returned in the spring of 1998 with Faith, which provided the first signs that she was interested in crossing over to pop audiences, even if the still-countrified music often straddled the fence instead of making her ambitions explicit. The single “This Kiss” proved the savvy of her approach; not only did it top the country charts for three weeks, but it also became her first pop hit, climbing to number seven. By the time “This Kiss” had run its course on the charts, Hill had given birth to her second daughter with McGraw, Maggie.

If Hill had been a star in the country world, she was now rapidly becoming a superstar, known not just for her music but also her pure celebrity; she also signed an endorsement deal with Cover Girl makeup. Her next two singles, “Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me” (another duet with McGraw) and “Let Me Let Go,” hit number one country, though they didn’t duplicate the pop success of “This Kiss.”

Faith, released in 1998, became Hill’s biggest-selling album yet, eventually moving over six million copies and reaching the Top Ten on the LP charts; plus, it became crystal clear that Hill held major crossover appeal. Accordingly, she re-entered the studio immediately after her supporting tour and cut Breathe, a full-fledged bid for pop and adult contemporary success. Breathe entered the charts at number one upon its release in late 1999, and its title track became Hill’s biggest hit yet; it spent six weeks on top of the country charts and was an even bigger hit on the adult contemporary charts. While it only climbed to number two pop, the single had such staying power that it wound up the biggest hit of the year 2000.

The follow-ups were pretty successful in their own right: “The Way You Love Me” and “There You’ll Be” both hit the pop Top Ten, with the former topping the country charts and the latter hitting number one AC. Hill also scored a Top Ten country hit with “Let’s Make Love,” a third duet with McGraw, and the two teamed up for another tour in 2000. Breathe was a bona fide blockbuster, selling over seven million copies in the U.S. and earning her a slew of award nominations. Hill spent much of 2001 taking a break and spending time with Audrey, her third daughter with McGraw.

In 2002, Hill returned to the spotlight with her fifth studio recording, Cry, a three-million seller whose title track netted her the Best Female Vocal Performance Grammy for 2003. Hill took nearly three years to return to recording, but when she released Fireflies in August 2005 it was hailed as one of her finest works. The lead single “Mississippi Girl” (written by John Rich of the hit country duo Big & Rich) hit number one on the country singles chart, and the album reached number one on the album charts. Her Soul2Soul II tour of 2006, which she co-headlined with McGraw, became the highest-grossing country tour of all time.
