Protest SOPA & PIPA ACT - protect the Internet

The reason is to protest the proposed U.S. legislation that threatens internet freedom: the Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Protect IP Act (PIPA). A quick update on this, some of the regular websites changed their skin to protest..

Patrick Leahy (D-VT). The act’s goals were described by its sponsors as protecting intellectual property and punishing foreign sites who post copyrighted material. If a site was discovered doing so, the U.S. attorney general could order U.S. based Internet service providers, search engines, payment systems and advertising networks to suspend doing business with the website.
Pathetic..!!

Do you understand what above act will do ... It give the AG(Attorney General) of America power, because of which...

Internet service providers will be required to block your access to the site (section 102(c)(2)(A)(i)) within five days.
Search engines (Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.) will be forced to remove all references to the offending sites from their indexes (section 102(c)(2)(B)).
Ad providers (Google AdSense, Federated Media, etc.) will be required to stop providing ad service to the site.
Payment providers (PayPal, Visa, etc.) will be required to terminate service to the site.

I hope u read SOPA and PIPA and understand it, and know why it is bad. I know it is bit difficult to read it and understand, but if you care of Internet and Freedom of it, you should also join and protest this act.

Lenovo unveils first Android television set

The world's first television based on Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system has been announced by Lenovo. The TV set, however will initially only be for sale in China. Available in 42" and 50" versions, the device is unusual because it is not using Google's TV software, which is based on an earlier version of Android, codi-named Honeycomb!!

The K91 Smart TV will join a host of other 'smart TV's that are set to be announced at the Counsumer Electronics Show(CES)' in Las Vegas. Those made by LG are already confirmed as using Google TV, and they are expected to be joined by models from Sony and Samsung.

GigaOm reports that the Lenovo set will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor running at 1. GHz, as well as offering 1GB of Ram , SD card storage and a 5mp webcam. The remote control will feature a touchscreen and an integrated microphone for voice control.

A key theme of CES is set to be TV that increasingly blur the line between computers and televisions, while their remote controls increasingly resemble smartphones. Apple is also reported to be working on a TV of its own. Lenovo additionally announced the IdeaTab S2, a tablet with a keyboard dock that is similar to the award wining Asus Transformer Prime, as well as laptops that include the company's first bid to take on the 'ultrabook' market of new thin and light computer. The U310 and U410 will initially sell in america for just $699, but are slightly heavier than their more expensive rivals.

The prices marked manufactures attempts to differentiate their products in this new category of devices primarily through price. Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps had previously observed that at $1000 ultra books would be too expensive for mainstream consumers.

It's time to celebrate... my blog is now a year old ... i started blogging from December 2010.
Initially started this blog to share my knowledge and experience with you all...
I know its late to wish a ha-p new year... but better late than never... tough to manage time form busy schedule and blog..

2011 was tough year... i post graduated, and like every other's do.. finding a job was very tedious... though i started in December 2010 i wouldn't write much since i could hardly find time. Now a year down the line blogging is what i think every time. Let's see where it takes me.

Not much to say now, I wish you all readers a happy prosperous new year and may all your wishes come true... Thanks again, and lets get back to work :P

We read in earlier post how Android phones are now drawing crooks attention. It is easier to launch malware on Android. In most cases, the phones are being compromised by installation of certain applications that exploit the vulnerabilities Many of my friends who use iPhone said "Apple's iPhone too has an app store but the applications that are available on the store are put through a stringent evaluation and it is a closed Eco-

system". In the case of Android , the eco- system is open and there are multiple app stores. That is precisely why the incidence of malware is high on Android phones. "A map application with malware is more dangerous. It provides the exact location of the phone-user and it is great threat to the phone-user as a

person". Similarly, there are malware in the guise of application that track other forms of data, including mobile banking and the contact list.

A key difference between the early days of cybercrime targetting PC's and the current drift towards mobile platform is that cybercriminals are starting from scratch, There are circles within circles.For instance."SMS Privato Spy" is marketed as a app that allow buyers(read scammers) to spy on a smartphone user by doing such things as viewing the phone screen live, viewing call logs, performing GPS tracking and activating the phone's microphone to listen in on conversations. The only problem - besides such an app being an obvious invasion of privacy - is that SMS Privato Spy doesnt exist! Those behind the scam go to great lengths to convince potential buyers that it does exist. But all that the buyers get for their money is a lighter wallet.But there are malware that do exist. Even when bad apps are discovered, it does not solve the problem.

Such malware is hard to uninstall. Instead of infecting devices at one go, the attackers parcel their 'workload'-their malicious code. This is similar to a smuggler who evades detection by bringing in small amounts of the consignments over a period of time, rather than sneaking in the entire lot in one attempt.

Smaller pieces are easier to hide. This strategy obviates a long permission list which can trigger suspicion and give their game away.

A new version of malware called Android.Lightdd attempted this. The first payload performs reconnaissance

and intelligence-gathering(model, language, country ,IMEI, IMSI, IS version), followed by the downloading of additional payload.

Crooks' arsenal ranges from mobile games to a simple map

Smartphone security firms have reason to worry. Malware threats to Android phones, which have positioned themselves in the smartphone category, are growing. This time, mobile crooks are targeting certain features that are popular on PC's but are found to be vulnerable on Android phones. For eg: unlike other smart phones with proprietary app store, Android phones keep their app stores 'open', exposing themselves to attacks by malware writers.

The Android phones offer a variety of applications that allow users to operate the phone for requirements that are beyond voice. Typically, smartphone makers offer applications through their app stores. Wresting control of the app stores, however can allow malware writers to pick vulnerabilities in Android phones.

Following are some of the Android specific mobile threats:
AndroidOS.Tapsnake
A user who downloads this application assumes that it is the Android version of the popular "Snake" game.
However what happens is that the threat switches on the phone's GPS and relays information about the user's coordinates to the cyber criminal.

Andorid.Pjapps
Android.Pjapps is an example of a Trojan with backdoor capabilities that targets Android devices. As seen with previous Android threats, it spreads through compromised versions o legitimate applications. One of the applications carrying Android.Pjapps code is Steamy Window similar to other compromised Android applications, it is difficult to differentiate the legitimate version form the malicious one once it is installed. During installation, however it is possible to identify the malicious version by the excessive permissions it requests.When run, both the legitimate and malicious versions of the application mimics a steam effect on your Android devices screen. It even lets you wipe it off with your finger. The aim of Android.Pjapps is to build a botnet controlled by a number of different Command and Control(C&C) servers.

Android.Rootcager
Android Packages(.apk) include the file "rageagainstthecage", which is a tool commonly used to root the phone. In legitimate circumstances, this file can be used by the owner of the phone to acquire administrative rights on his or her phone this case, rooting the pone can allow malware we call Android.Rootcager to form more than the usual activities not commonly allowed on droid phones. Android.Rootcager roots phone without user consent by performing activities such as taking screen shots, monitoring installed applications and downloading additional packages of code.

1] Steve Jobs (CEO, Apple Inc.)

The one who bought biggest change, father of Apple Inc Steve Jobs died on 5 October, he was suffering from cancer. He made people to look at technology from another view through products like iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad… and such more products showed a different direction to technology.

2] Dennis Ritchie (Founder of The C language and The UNIX Operating System)

He was an American scientist who helped shape the digital era. He created the C programming language and with his longtime colleague Ken Thompson the UNIX operating system. He received the National Medal of Technology from President Clinton in 1999. Though he was not popular amongst common people (the non-programmers :P) it would not have being possible to see all those software’s we use in our day to day life for sure.

3] Paul Baran (Founded the Internet)

Paul Baran in 1960 started a project which included “Data Packet Switching” which later evolved into ARPANET which further increased to matrix of networks which we call it “The Internet”.
Baran died in Palo Alto, California at the age of 84 on March 26, 2011,[1][20] due to complications from lung cancer

4] John McCarthy (Father of Artificial Intelligence)

John McCarthy (September 4, 1927 – October 24, 2011) was an American computer and cognitive scientist. He coined the term "artificial intelligence" (AI), invented the “Lisp” programming language and was highly influential in the early development of AI.

A lifelong engineer and tinkerer, Lawson was born in 1940 and grew up in a federal housing project in Queens, New York. As a kid, he operated a ham radio; as a teenager he earned money by repairing his neighbors’ television sets.

Galvin died Tuesday night in Chicago of natural causes, his family said.
Galvin oversaw Motorola's pioneering efforts in the cellular industry, including the creation of the first commercial cellphone in 1973 and the construction of the first cellphone network in the early 80s.

Android Code name/Flavor?

Android will be releasing its new OS code named “Ice cream Sandwich”. Unlike Apple, which doesn’t update its OS frequently. After reading more about android I came to know that all the code name of android OS are some or other desserts!! And this is not the only thing…all of them are alphabetically ordered. Starting from Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Gingerbread. And the latest to come off course the Ice cream sandwich.

Since the code name started with Cupcake, you must have started wondering what about earlier version before Cupcake? The pre- release version of android were Astro and Bender but could not be used due to trademark reasons.

The release of latest android OS made me think what must be the next OS code name? one name came to my mind “Jalebi” … :P but most of the other code name are US desserts.

Any ways let me know what you all think of…

Transfer data from Excel to MS SQL Server using DTS(Data Transformation Services)

MS SQL Server 2008 tutorial : DTS (Data Transformation Service in SQL Server)

For those who dont know DTS(Data transformaiton service), its a MS SQL Server tool to import/export data to and from MSSQL Server tables from various sources like Microsoft Excel file, Access file, another flat file, or any other MSSQL Server table.
This post will will make all the doubts clear regarding DTS in sql.

Now to demostrate DTS we will take a following example.
Consider you want to transfer a data from Excel sheet to MSSQL table. Like the one below

For sake of explanation the XL sheet contains only 10 records. But actually it can contains thousands and lakhs of data.

Now before we start the process there are few pointers that should be checked/remembered, which are as follows:

The XL sheet that you needs to be exported to sql must have Column names similar to column names of table present in MS SQL Server 2005/2008 database. The reason? explained later in this post.

In XL sheet column header must be followed by a "Dummy data row". Notice that in Fig 1 there is no dummy row. Now why do we need this dummy row. According to working dts sql service checks the XL's first few row's (first 8-16 rows to be precise) and counts which row has bigger data in terms of characters and sets it max, thus if your table contains max character of rows in 30th record dts will throw an Truncation error. Thus we set a dummy row large enough to tell dts that this is the largest data row in our table. After putting dummy row the XL sheet looks like below

Now we are set. To start..open SQL Server Management Studio (2008 R2 here in my case).
>> Right click the database where the table exists and select "Import Data". This is the way i prefer. Show in figure below.

After this the Import / Export wizard opens up.

Click Next and in next window select "Microsoft Excel" in Data Source (shown in fig 6)

Now look at fig below(fig 7)... the check box marked in red..read what it says...."First row has column names ". Yes .. this is the one reason why we kept the column names similar... but the actual reason is still ahead...

After selecting Data Source, Browse the XL sheet and click next...Let the Destination and Server name be same if you navigated like fig 4. Note: The Destination changes depending upon Operating system and how you have installed MS SQL server. (shown in fig 8)

After Clicking Next below screen appears. let the first radio option be selected (shown in fig 9)

In next window select appropriate sheet on left and appropriate sql server table on right. (As show in fig 10)

Now on the same above window dont forget to Click "Edit Mappings". When you click it a window similar to fig shown below will open up depending on which version of sql server you are using..

Now if your XL sheet and sql server table column names match the source and destination will match automatically as in this example show in fig above.This is second reason why we kept XL and sql server column names similar, because if you have more columns in XL we can keep matching them here in this wizard. If the column names donot match the destination column in above window shows "ignore". Dont worry you can still match them if you have missed one or another. After you click Ok next window appears

Dont forget to select ignore options for last two drop downs at the end of window. After you click next following window shows up.

After you click finish the actual process starts..

Oppsss!!!! and error occured.

In this case following was error

After reading the error carefully, i came to know that we forgot to provide additional information in window shown in fig 11

Now why did the problem occured? Because our excel sheet contains number in "cust_id" and cust_id is primary identity field in sql server. Thus we need to tell dts that we are allowing to put identity field through XL sheet. Everthing in this case would have gone right if cust_id was not present.

Any ways if all things go right then the following screen appears

Now go check the data base table...

To be a good programmer is difficult and noble. The hardest part of making real a collective vision of a software project is dealing with one’s co-workers and customers. Writing computer programs is important and takes great intelligence and skill. But it is really child's play compared to everything else that a good programmer must do to make a software system that succeeds for both the customer and myriad colleagues for whom she is partially responsible. In this post I attempt to summarize as concisely as possible those things that I wish someone had explained to me when I started developing interest in developing programs.

I have being programming since my school days. I remember writing small programs in BASIC(for those how don’t know BASIC is ) and LOGO(it was a meant to draw different geometrical shapes using commands) . But actually later I came to know LOGO was more than that. I remember very interesting thing about LOGO, the cursor which we see now a days in LOGO there used to be a triangle which was called as “Turtle”. Anyways even in those days that programs would seem more difficult. I read an interesting article about programmers which I would like to share…

Signs that you shouldn't be a programmer:
The following may not have any remedies if you still suffer from them after taking a programming course in school, so you will stand a better chance of advancing your career by choosing another profession.

Ubuntu to rescue...

Hello all,
Linux has being a great competitive as well as alternative OS to Windows/Mac etc.. Many things you can do with Linux and today I want to share this experience with you all.

But before this, a short trailer of how i found myself in soup and how Linux save the day.. Read on...

Into the Problem:
Day before yesterday i was extending my C drive using Disk management utility. my C drive at that time was 15Gb :P, Since i need developing tools on my Laptop C drive need more space. Following are list of my tools i use with its approx disk usage
* MS SQL Server 2008 R2 - takes almost 2.5GB
* MS Visual Studio 2008 - 6GB
and some times Visual studio 2010 which takes whopping 7 GB... :/ and other such tools...

OK, now back to point, I couldn't extend the C drive for some reasons. So my friend suggested to use Partition Magic to extend or shrink a Drive.. Never needed to use partition software's.. it was first time i was going to use it. I downloaded it from Torrent z as usual.. Next was least expected or my bad luck.. when i ran the setup, an error occurred saying Drive label not found. When i opened the Windows explorer i was shocked.. it was showing only my C drive and all my other drive (D: E: F:) were missing... I didn't knew what to do that time, so as usual to solve any problem in windows i restarted my laptop... and this was another mistake i did... i knew problem was related to Partition table.. and after that my OS didnt boot.. The error was "Operating System not found". It was disaster for me.. all my data was there in hard disk but i couldn't access it. So instead of setting up new Win 7, i decided to create a LiveUSB of Linux...

Before the problem existed i was using Ubuntu 11.04(Natty Narwhal) on diffrent partion. Finally created a LiveUsb of Ubuntu , backed up all my data on my portable HDD and now there was no problem to format my Laptop hard disk... So during formating i even partitioned drives, installed Win7 again, and my machine was up again for working..

Lessons learned :

* Never trust and download softwares from sites which you are not sure of.
* If you dont know how to use some software, take help of a technician.
* And even in worst case dont panic.. "Always carry your brain with you"

The speculative fears of mobile phones being a danger to health in the long run, seem to be coming true. A latest government study talks about the harmful effects of not just using mobile phones but also the radiation from mobile phone towers.

A Times of India report states that -

Radiation from mobile phones and towers poses serious health risks, including loss of memory, lack of concentration, disturbance in the digestive system and sleep disturbances, according to an inter-ministerial committee formed by the ministry of communications and information technology to study the hazards posed by mobile phones.

One India also reported that the damages may not be lethal for humans, but they worse for birds and insects as well. The committee has attributed the radiation effects to the disappearance of butterflies, bees, insects and sparrows.

The government report also says that mobile towers should not be installed near high density residential areas, schools, playgrounds and hospitals. "The localized SAR value as per the Indian guidelines standard is 2 watt per kg, averaged over a six minute period and using a 10 gram average mass. With higher SAR values of mobile handsets the public could potentially receive much higher radiofrequency exposure. We have recommended that SAR levels to be lowered down to 1.6 watt/kg, as prescribed by the Federal Communication Commission of US," said a member.

The eight-member committee, which included representatives from the health ministry, department of biotechnology and member secretary, DoT, has recommended that mobile phones not adhering to standard levels of specific absorption rate (SAR) - a measure of the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed by the body while using a phone -- should be barred.

Member scientist, ICMR R S Sharma said that compared to Europeans, Indian cellphone users are more at risk for adverse affect of radiation due the country's hot tropical climate, low body mass index, and low fat content. "We have recommended amendment in the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and rules so that only mobile handsets satisfying radiation standards should be permitted in the country," he said.

In another report, citizens are scared of the radiation from mobile tower in Andheri.

In the past five years, more than 15 housewives living in Sher-e-Punjab colony in Andheri (East) have suffered from various forms of cancer. Although there is no proof of a direct link, residents are drawing parallels between the appearance of the first cancer case and the installation of the first mobile phone tower in the society nearly seven years ago. Based on a Hindustan Times report.

Neha Kumar, who has been studying the biological effects of mobile phone towers, said, “All these women don’t have any family history of cancer. Plus, all of them are within a certain radius of those mobile towers. All this is not a coincidence.”

So how do we minimise the damage in view of such grave consequences. The report adds -

“While talking on mobile, keep calls short or send a text message (SMS). This advice should be especially relevant keeping in mind the children, adolescents and pregnant women” said the report. The advice should be printed in the user manual by handset manufacturers.

“Whenever possible, use cellphone when the signal quality is good. People having active medical implants should keep their cellphone at least 30 cm away from the implant” said the report.

Many a times we find ourselves complaining of bad network in certain areas. Mobile companies raise towers at every nook and corner to beat each other at network coverage. Are we compromising our health for better mobile connections?

Hey all,

Probably this is my last post ... in this year :) few hours are left for 2010 to get finished.

hope you all have made your resolutions and made big promises to complete it..

Hoping 2011 to be more prosperous, healthy for all of you. may it bring India one step closer of becoming super power; a more developed country, more importantly corruption free :) make Sachin more fit for making record's of records...help me get to 100th level in farmville .. lol.. may all farmers in farmville get more neighbors, more gifts, more fuel...( mera job ka bhi kuch setting kar de bhagwan!!)...phew...list toh bahot lambi ho gaye. hehehe

Failed in doing many things in 2010 but never stopped trying, learned new things(any ways i saw my horoscope predictions by 12 astrologer's on some news channel they said Gemini pepole would be more successful in 2011 hehehe ) .... but 2010 you will be missed for sure...

It's Time for Resolutions..

Yes yes yes...it is the time for all those stupid resolution that we make and promise to keep up but most of them we give up as soon as we feel we cant achieve them. I remember last year i also made some resolutions though i completed some of them left out with some...

so here we are at end of 2010 and its time for some resolutions to make and welcome 2011 ...

These are my resolution i promise i will complete in 2011

Loose some weight(arround 5-10kg :)))
Get a good , responsible,stable job .... (off course a job at least that will pay bills...lol )
Learn Guitar (good god ..this is on my resolution list from past 2 years)
buy a new(multimedia) mobile and a watch for myself

phewwww...

so friends go ahead make some feasible resolutions and work hard to complete it and ~~strike~~ it .. also dont forget to share it here as comment and wish me luck for completing mine....

Hi All,
This is my first post in my Blog. Creating a blog was on my list from many days.Now what what are you going to read in this blog....well i am going to keep it as simple as i can... most of my post would be informative(i assume :)).. , regarding my experiences in life blah blah blah...u will come to know...

As of now since i m new to blogging i would appreciate and welcome new and good suggestion from you all. If anyone thinking of starting a blog i would be more than willing to help them with any little help i can do.
