A truly epic culture clash, ‘Worldwide Family Vol.2’ is not only a genuine reflection of Kutmah’s deep-seated LA roots and his new home in London, but it is symbolic of the reciprocal flow of ideas that ignites mutual inspiration in these two cultural capitals. His family in Los Angeles stand strong, proudly contributing exclusive jam after exclusive jam from the likes of Mono/Poly, Dibia$e, Flying Lotus Samiyam, Jonwayne, Seven Davis Jr., The Darkhorsemen.

Arriving in London little more than a year ago (via a US Detention Centre and a short stay in Manchester), it seems UK bass culture has seeped into the LA exile’s subconscious, too – just listen to the way ESMK’s ‘Blunt Hopes’ flips into its twitchy UKG cadence, or the rise and fall of fLako and Dirg Gerner’s eerily beautiful opus ‘Lonely Town’.

Track Of The Year Nomination

“Wow, what a weekend! Two greats in London town that both went off with a bang. Friday night saw some of Gilles’ picks for 2012 take control of proceedings at XOYO and firmly deliver the goods, big shout to all that performed; Bad Bad Not Good, 2Morrows Victory, Flako, Ifan Dafydd, Lefto, Alex Patchwork and of course Gilles. A great night was had by all and it was the perfect warm up to Saturday’s antics.” – Brownswood

As if the great warm up event wasn’t enough, i got a nomination for Track of The Year for Dirg Gerner – Attempting Cry w/ Olmino at the awards on saturday, which was a nice surprise and a great inducement. Congrats to the Ho Tep fam for their nomination as Label of the year! Lets see what happens next year.

Meet The Awful Dynne

‘Mini Tollbooth’ is inspired by a novel called Phantom Tollbooth. More precisely the film adaptation from 1961. This modern fairy tale is about a young boy named Milo who is bored by the world around him. He feels everything is a waste of time. He comes home from school one day to find in his bedroom an anonymous package containing a miniature tollbooth and a map of the Lands Beyond. He takes the map, drives through in his toy car, and instantly finds himself driving on a road to Expectations. Enjoying the ride, he pays no attention to his route and soon becomes lost in the Doldrums, a colorless place where thinking and laughing are not allowed. He is having plenty more adventures like watching Chroma the Great conduct his orchestra in playing the colors of the sunset or meeting The Awful Dynne, a genie who collects noises for Dr. Dischord.

It was my honor to be invited to one of Gilles last show’s on BBC Radio 1. It was my first time and pretty much was i expected. Gilles is just a very nice guy, still radio mics make me a little nervous.

“This week Gilles is joined in the studio by German producer fLako, who talked about his forthcoming releases and gigs. Plus Gilles chats to disco-legend Nile Rogers who was a founding member of Chic, and a regular at the infamous Studio 54 in New York! If that wasn’t enough, there was a Nitin Sawnhey session track and brand new music from the forthcoming Roots album ‘Undun’, a new Sinden collab and another exclusive from the Portico Quartet.”

Preface EP Artwork

Sometimes things just come together. Like this time, when i stumbled upon Brock Davis and his Make Something Cool Every Day : 2009 Project. One piece of creative work made every day for 365 consecutive days. The richness of ideas and this one particular piece of work just got my attention.

The writing pad with all the stripped pages and the unfinished lines is such a good image of how the music on this EP came together, that i had to ask Brock if i could use it for the cover artwork. Luckily he was down with my ideas and so generous to contribute his art. Finally i asked my Dad to contribute his wonderful handwriting, that i always wanted to eternalise.

When listening to the album bonus tune ‘Loose Bells’, she “drifted to another planet” she wrote. Inspired by the tune, Kamile recorded some vocals and thought “why not share it with fLako?”. Regarding the quality and as our appreciation, we would like to share it with you.
