Music from bands that played the Pawnbroker this Monday September 9, from 10:00pm-12:00am on 91.3 FM KXCI.
The Pawnbroker Restaurant and Music Hall, 6632 E Tanque Verde Rd. Tucson Arizona opened in 1974. It was a nice upscale dinner and night club that featured the best local bands and the occasional national touring act (most notably Jerry Riopelle.) All barn wood walls, beams and stained glass windows, it was really a unique building. Busy just about every night of the week, all of the best bands in Tucson played there. Tucson had such a vibrant music scene back then, so many good bands and musicians. Many bands had lengthy runs at the Pawnbroker as the ‘house band’ including Ictus, Straight Shot, The Fabulous Air Brothers, The Frank and Woody Show, Bob Meighan Band and The Dusty Chaps.

The Pawnbroker is long gone, but you can listen to the music with rare, unreleased tracks (some recorded live at the Pawnbroker) and old favorites by some of Tucson’s best musicians. A Night at the Pawnbroker, Monday September 9, 2013 on the Hub Radio Show 10pm to 12am. 91.3 FM KXCI Tucson.

Americana duo The Grahams stop by Studio 2A for a live performance on The Home Stretch Tuesday afternoon around 4:30pm. The Grahams will be playing Wednesday night at Plush with Lila Lopez opening at 9:30pm.
Gene Armstrong, host of The Road Show Thursday's on KXCI from 10-12pm, will be interviewing the band. Here is his review of their new album, Riverman’s Daughter.

"Although this is the official debut by the wife-and-husband team of Alyssa and Douglas Graham, they’ve has played together for many years in different contexts, most notably on two excellent jazz-folk solo albums by Alyssa. Riverman’s Daughter was written as the New York City-based Grahams traveled the length of the Mississippi River, inspired by the lives and stories they encountered along the way. Produced by the Grammy Award-winning Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Bob Dylan, Giant Sand), it was recorded live to tape in Nashville with few frills.
The Grahams interpret Americana by embracing traditional country and old-timey folk in a contemporary setting, but they avoid blindly re-creating these sounds. There’s nothing strident or forced here; the tunes feel warm, natural and organic.
The album kicks off with playful, gospel-infused bluegrass (“Revival Time”) and indulges in an old-fashioned country waltz (“You Made Me Love You”). Throughout, Alyssa’s voice serves as a smoky, soulful foundation, while guitarist Douglas provides expert harmonies. “Heaven Forbid,” a dark tale of drowning, features one of her most beautiful vocals, clear and sweet and rich.
Fans of The Band will be drawn to the way the Grahams approach 1970s-style country-rock. “Lonesome Child” and “Carrying the Torch” are gorgeous, with multi-faceted harmonies you can get lost in. But the title track is the most powerful example of this style, filled with a sultry bayou orchestra of fiddle, banjo and organ." – Gene Armstrong

As is tradition at HOCO, we celebrate Tucson’s musical history, this year we are just tickled to have The Frank and Woody show headline the outdoor Tucson stage. During the heyday of the beer soaked, marijuana hazed, golden age of the renegade Tucson music scene, they were one of the most popular acts. Country rock dominated the Tucson club scene and some of Tucson’s most talented musicians and songwriters emerged from this, many garnering national attention. No one was more beloved, raunchy and raucous than The Frank and Woody Show- and that’s saying somethin’. This is their first performance in seven years and they are rarin’ to go. Frank Manhardt and Woody Janda are bringing together the legendary band for what will be a great, “can’t miss” event.
