Description of the Sitar

The Sitar is the most popular of all North Indian instruments. It is classified as a chordophone in the lute family, and is related to the Veena and Zither. The larger pegs on the peg box are for the playing strings. The large pegs on the side of the neck are for the chikaries (drone strings). The smaller pegs, on the side of the neck, are for the sympathetic strings. The degree of decoration of these pegs is an indication of the class of instrument. The more decorated the pegs, the higher the quality of instrument.

The number of strings varies, with just fewer than 20 being most common. Three sets of strings run the length of the neck. Two sets run over the top of the movable arched metal frets to the end pegs and one set runs under the frets. The top sets are the main or playing strings and chikaries. The playing strings are fretted to produce melodies. A wire finger plectrum, called a mizrab, is used to pluck these strings. The chidaries are periodically struck to provide a drone or tonic base for the music. The sympathetic strings run under the frets to side mounted pegs. The sympathetic strings are almost never played. As the top strings are plucked the sympathetic strings gently vibrate. They add a soft resonating drone to the rhythms played. With all these strings it may be a surprise to know that only one to four strings are actually played to produce a melody.

The surface of the Sitar is highly decorated. There are numerous inlays and a good deal of carving. Sitars can be divided into two types, the single and the double toomba. The Double toomba has a second, smaller, carved gourd at the end of the neck. The single usually has fewer strings and only one gourd.

Our importer has two purchasing directors in India who contract for the generic Sitars. They do a very good job. All of the full-size Sitars are approximately 48 inches in length. They come with double toombas and cloth covered plywood cases, an inside cloth bag, mizrab picks, replacement strings, and the "Play on Sitar" instruction book. We also carry replacement bridges, beads, frets, strings, and mizrabs.

Origin of the Sitar

There are a number of theories regarding the origin and history of the Sitar. Most disregard the historical record. Some suggest the Sitar is in the lute family and the veena is a stick zither. There are also differences in the basic construction and materials used. All these things suggest these two instruments developed independently. The Sitar is often attributed to Amir Khusru. The difficulty arises when you realize there were two famous individuals with the name Amir Khusru. One Amir Khusru who lived in the 1300’s and one who lived in the 1700’s. This alone can make it difficult to ascertain the development of the Sitar. Since the Persian- Islamic influence in Hindu music began with the Moghul Empire during the 1300’s some believe this earlier Amir Khusru was influential in both the development of the Hindustani Sangeet and the Sitar. (Hindustani Sangeet is the style of music that blends the traditional Hindu musical concepts and Persian performance practice.) During the time of Moghul rule Persian lutes were played at court, and may provide the basis of the Indo-Pakistan Sitar. However, there is no physical evidence for the Sitar until the time of the collapse of the Moghul Empire. So it can be assumed that this first Amir Khusru had no involvement in the invention of the Sitar.

The Sangeet Sudarshana attributes the Sitar to the second Amir Khusru during the 18th century. Those that attribute the Sitar to this Khusru believe he developed the Sitar from the Persian Sehtar. This Amir’s grandson, Masit Khan, was one of the most influential musicians in the development of this instrument. The Masitkhani Gat style of music with numerous slow gats in the dhrupad derives its name from Masit Khan.

From these theories and the historic record, we can conclude that the Sitar developed in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent not at the beginning, but at the end of the Mogul era. It was likely influenced by or evolved from the Persian lutes played in the Mogul courts.

Playing the Sitar

We offer a variety of intructional materials for the Sitar. Find one that you are comfortable with and then practice, practice, practice. Do not expect to pick up the Sitar and be playing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in a matter of a few weeks. This is an instrument you invest yourself in. Be patient. Consider this a journey. You may be able to find a teacher in your area. Study, find other players, read, watch videos, and renew your library card. You will learn slowly, but the end result will be fabulous!

To begin playing Sitar, you must first master the seated position. Sit on the ground and cross your legs. Right handed players: Your left foot should stick out under your right thigh. Place your right ankle in front of your left knee. This position allows you to easily hold the Sitar. Rest the larger (resonator) toomba on the heel of your left foot. Your right arm rests on top of this toomba and helps to hold the instrument. The neck should cross your chest at an angle, from your right hip to left shoulder. If you have the correct position, your left heel and right forearm should hold the Sitar steady. The tips (not the pads) of the index and middle fingers of the left hand are used to note the strings. Do not press the string into the fret. The string is lightly pressed, just above the fret, and then pulled to the outside of the neck.

A wire plectrum, or mizrab, is worn on the index finger of the right hand to strum the strings. When the plectrum is worn correctly the pointed wire is positioned to run over the fingernail and under the pad of the finger. These picks come in various sizes. The pick should slide up and over the outside of the first joint of your index finger. This will secure the plectrum on the finger while playing. If you are a beginner, consider getting the plastic coated plectrum for added comfort. Try placing the point of the plectrum against a string. Flick your finger back and forth, hitting the string each time. This produces a fast tremolo effect.

Tuning the Sitar

The graduated scale used in western music (Do, Re, Mi, Fa) is not used in Indian music. Rather, Indian music is based on a tonic with arbitrary pitch. The tuning of the Sitar will even vary from Raga to Raga.

Here is one suggestion for tuning. There are a number of alternatives.

Always start with the second string and end with the first string. As you tune, repeatedly strike the string until the desired pitch is reached. Also, remember that the tuning pegs of the Sitar are tapered and held in by friction. As you tune apply a small amount of pressure to the pegs to keep them secured.

The player may wish to alter the notes of the strings, higher or lower, by a half step. As you become more accustomed to your instrument, you may wish to alter the pitch by changing the size of the string. Once you find a tonic scale that suits you and your instrument, altering the pitch no longer becomes necessary.

When tuning the Sitar, begin with the main strings. Start with the second string and continue to the chikaris (drones). The sympathetic strings are tuned depending on which raga you will be playing and on your own preference. Beginners my wish to tune the sympathetic strings to the western tonic scale.

Cumbus Origins

The Cumbus is a relatively young instrument. It was developed in Istanbul in the early 1900’s. The inventor, Zeynel, was born in Salonika, now known as Thessaloníki, Greece. He eventually settled in Beyazit, Istanbul, opened a music shop, and became known as Zeynel Abidin Bey. He was also known as a local Oud performer. Eventually he began to design new instruments. It was on January 24th 1930 that Zeynel’s instrument received its name from a fellow native of Thessalonica, the famous Ataturk Mustafa Kemal. Ataturk began his service to Turkey as a soldier. Later as a national leader he founded the republic of Turkey, and became Turkey’s first president. Drawing on the sound of the instrument for inspiration, Ataturk dubbed it ‘Cumbus’. Pronounced “joombush”, “Cumbus” is Turkish for ‘revelry’. Soon Zeynel was manufacturing and selling his Cumbus. In 1934 the Surname Act was passed, requiring all Turkish citizens to take a family name. Zeynel Abidin Bey now became Zeynel Abidin Cumbus. About 30 years ago, the Cumbus stepped off the classical stage. Today, it is still played by the people out of the cities, especially at weddings, and special ceremonies.

Description Of Cumbus

Originally this Turkish chordophone had a leather soundboard, much like an American Banjo. The narrow fretless neck was designed to easily disassemble from the aluminum body by loosening a large screw mechanism. It has been said that the body looks like a kitchen frying pan; the back and sides are solid. There are vent holes on the top surface around the soundboard. Today the Cumbus have Mylar soundboards held in place by a bolted tension ring. For its light weight, the Cumbus is very sturdy and remarkably loud.

Our Cumbus

Kyle Music carries four styles of Cumbus. They are from the Cumbus family shop on Ataturk Bulvar in Istanbul. This is the Family shop of Zeynel Abidin Cumbus, the inventor of the Cumbus. Kyle Music carries the Standard Cumbus, Cura Cumbus, Tambor Cumbus, and the Banjo Cumbus. They all have the traditional spun aluminum body and detachable neck. The soundboards are sturdy Mylar and they come in a soft carrying case.

The Standard Cumbus is approximately 34 inches long. It is the most traditional in design, with no frets on the neck. There are six courses of 2 strings each.
The Cura Cumbus is approximately 29 inches long. It has nylon frets tied to the neck and 3 courses of 2 strings each.
The Tambor Cumbus is approximately 51 inches long. It has nylon frets tied to the neck and 3 courses of 2 strings each.
The Banjo Cumbus is approximately 23 inches long. It has nylon frets tied to the neck and 4 courses of the 2 strings each.

Care & Tuning Instructions for the Cumbus

As with all maniacal instruments common sense will go a long way in protecting its longevity. Do not store it in direct sunlight, or places with drafts. Avoid sudden changes in humidity and temperature. If you must ship your instruments remove some tension for the strings. With these Cumbus, do not use abrasives on the metal body. Be especially careful to keep sharp objects way from the soundboard.
The Standard Cumbus is tuned like the Turkish Oud and one step higher than the Arabic Oud. Almost any Oud tuning can be used. The two strings that make up a course are tuned to the same key. From low to high you can tune
Standard A B E a d g; or D E A D G C;
Egyptian/Arab: D G A D G C;
New Turkish Classical: F# B E A D G;
Turkish/Armenian: E A B E A D;
Turkish/Armenian Variant: C# F# B E A D;
Old Turkish Classical: A D E A D G.
The Tambor Cumbus has 6 strings in 3 courses; tuned D A d.
The Cura Cumbus can be tuned like a banjo or mandolin.

Origins of the Didgeridoo

Some believe that the didgeridoo is the world’s oldest wind instrument. It may date back to 20,000 BC. The didgeridoo is part of the musical, healing and ceremonial heritage of the aboriginal peoples of Australia. Traditional playing of the didgeridoo is accompanied by tapping out soft rhythms on the sides of the instrument while it is being played. Louder rhythms can be achieved by clapping sticks together. According to one rendition of an aboriginal legend, the first man wanted to please the sky. He put a hollowed branch to his mouth and began to play. With the force of his breath, the termites living in the hollow branch were expelled from the open end and became the stars.

The Aborigines made their didgeridoos eucalyptus branches. There are hundreds of eucalyptus species, but only a few are used to make the didgeridoo. The eucalyptus grows with a fleshy center. If any insect or animal makes a small hold in the outer bark of the branch, termites move in. It takes about a year for them to hollow out the branch or sapling leaving the dense outer part of the eucalyptus intact. It is no doubt a myth that Aboriginal didgeridoo makers can smell the termites when they look for new materials. Perhaps, with experience, they can tell from the shape and condition of the branches, where the termites have done their work. Once cut, the hollowed ’stick’ is left to season for a few months. After that the bark is removed and the interior cleaned. Once dried and clean, the outside is sanded and any holes are filled. With the addition of a beeswax mouthpiece the instrument is ready to play. Unfortunately, with the increasing popularity of the didgeridoo world-wide, many cutters simply cut all the branches and saplings in an area to find a few hollow ones. Over 40,000 Australian didgeridoos are exported each year. If even one live sapling is cut for each of the hollowed dead eucalyptus, it represents a significant impact on Australia’s forests. Perhaps for this reason, and to supply demand, didgeridoos are now made from a number of natural and synthetic materials.

Playing the Didgeridoo

The length and thickens of the didgeridoo will determine which key the instrument will be in. The shorter the instrument, the higher the pitch; while the longer the instrument, the lower the pitch. Our didgeridoos are between 40 and 48 inches long. To play the didgeridoo, you blow into the mouthpiece while creating a buzzing with your lips. To practice, first try making the lowest buzz sound that you can. Stick your bottom lip out just a little beyond your upper lip. Now, keeping them loose, buzz them as if you were giving someone the ‘raspberry.’ Keeping your lips loose makes them vibrate and creates a buzz sound. Now try doing this into the didgeridoo. The long hollow chamber in the didgeridoo amplifies the sound. You should, with practice, achieve a drone sound. It is important to keep your lips relaxed. Trying too hard usually causes the beginner to tighten their lips- stay loose. Once you have mastered the drone. You can alter the pitch of the drone by slightly tightening your lips. You will know how tight is too tight when the sound stops. You can add rhythm to your drones by altering when you take breaths. This is all you need to become a fine didgeridoo player. To advance to the next stage of playing you will want to practice circular breathing. Circular breathing allows you to continually blow air from your mouth without ever stopping for breath. Let me say that again, circular breathing allows you to continually blow air from your mouth without ever stopping for breath. This technique allows you to blow an uninterrupted drone. To do this, fill your mouth and cheeks with air. Use your tongue to close off the back of your throat. Now, use light pressure of the cheeks to push air out of your mouth. At the same time, inhale through your nose. Replenish the air in your mouth and start the circle again. Honest, it can be done. The CD audio and CD ROM video didgeridoo tutorial that Kyle Music offers includes a complete series of exercises for learning how to circular breathe. It will also show you a number of things that will make playing the didgeridoo fun.

What determines the key of a didgeridoo?

Primarily it is the length and width of the air chamber of the instrument that determines the pitch. Think about the old pipe organs. The bass pipes were the fat long pipes and the soprano notes came from the thin short pipes. The longer and wider the didgeridoo, lower the sound. The inside shape of the air chamber can also affect the sound. If the didgeridoo is wider at the top the sound will be lower. While a wider bottom means higher pitch. Remember how you play the didgeridoo will give you some range of pitch as well.

The bodhran is the traditional Celtic frame drum. The cross braces and laminated rosewood strengthen the shell of this goatskin-covered drum. With a rich deep sound, these drums are great fun even if you have not mastered the traditional playing. Each bodhran is shipped with two wooden beaters, a slim beater, and a two knob beater.

Playing the Bodhran

To begin, hold the drum by the cross bracing. This is a nice secure grip. When you become familiar with playing the drum and your arms strengthen you can advance to a more sophisticated grip. At that time you can try sliding your hand between the cross bracing and the drum head. This allows you to press your fingertips against the inner rim of the drum head. Doing this lets you alter the sounds that the drum makes while being played. The traditional method of playing the bodhran is a fast back and forth swinging of the beater over the face of the drum. Hold the beater in your dominant hand. Hold it with a grip similar to holding a pencil. When you hold a pencil you hold it near the end with most of the pencil sticking out above your fingers. When holding a beater, most of the beater hangs down from your fingers. The grip is very similar to holding a thermometer. The motion you want to achieve is the same motion as shaking a thermometer before using it. The swing is in the wrist. The beater has a pendulum-like swing up and down across the head of the drum. The beater makes contact at the top and bottom of the swing. Practice! As you get better you will find that you can add a third beat from the TOP of the beater, but that takes some time. Have fun.

Our Bodhrans

There are a number of styles of Bodhran, but basically two types. There are the tacked or fixed-head Bodhrans, and then there are the Bodhrans with tunable heads. The natural skin heads of the Bodhran will react to changes in temperature and humidity. Tunable Bodhrans are best when you will be playing in uncontrolled climatic conditions. You can adjust the tension easily for hot dry days or humid days. Kyle Music has three different sizes and three different styles of Bodhran. There are the tacked heads, inside tunable and outside tunable. The diameter sizes are 14 inch, 18 inch, and 26 inch. All Kyle Music Bodhrans have rosewood frames and cross braces, and are shipped with a double headed and a slim beater. Kyle Music sells accessories separately.

Care and Reheading of Bodhrans

The natural skin drum heads should be treated with care. The head can be punctured or scarred by improper handling. Do not expose them to extremes in temperature or humidity. Too much moisture will make the drum head loosen, but then as it dries it may over tighten and damage the frame. If your drum’s sound seems too dull because of the humidity you may wish to apply some heat. Some professional drummers keep a heating pad on stage to adjust their drum heads. The best thing is to treat all musical instruments with care. In time, your drum head may need to be replaced. If you have the time and a little patience you can replace your own head. We sell the modified Fiberskyn heads pre-mounted for easy replacement. The tacked and natural skin heads will require more work, but, with a little guidance you can do it. Click here for instructions. Contact a drum circle in your area for friendly helpful advice, or check our links pages. Mid-East will also re-head your drum for you. However, if it comes to that you may just want to purchase a new drum at that time.

Origin of the Balalaika

The Balalaika most likely evolved from the Oriental dombra. The dombra, which is still played in present-day Kazakhstan, has an oval shaped soundboard and two-strings. Knowledge and use of the dombra, was most likely spread to Russia by Mongol trade and conquest. After the dombra’s introduced to Russia in the 14th century it underwent structural changes.

With its new form, the Balalaika was embraced by Russia and took its place in Russian folklore. It is said that the Balalaika embodies the Russian people’s character, with its ability to switch from happiness to sadness with ease. Originally it was a folk and peasant instrument. It was common for the peasant ballads, composed for the Balalaika, to irreverently poked fun at the authority of the times. For this reason there were times when the Balalaika was banned by both the Orthodox Church and the State. The instrument enjoyed its greatest folk
popularity in the early 18th century.

In the later 19th century the instrument underwent a number of changes, including the adoption the classic triangular shape. Reportedly, in the late 19th century, the Russian nobleman Vassily Vassilievich Andreyev, was responsible for the transition of the Balalaika from folk instrument to concert stage performances. Andeyev’s chamber ensemble’s first public concert in 1888 was a great success. It was this ensemble that was renamed The Great Russian Imperial Balalaika Orchestra. As this orchestra toured the Balalaika was introduced beyond Russia’s borders, even to The US. The Instrument was also carried by the common people when they fled Russia at times of war.

Description of the Balalaika

The Balalaika is a chordophone. The most striking structural component of the Balalaika is the triangular body. The Neck is narrow and terminates in a peg box that is at an acute angle to the neck. It has three strings and metal frets. Balalaikas come in number of sizes. The Piccolo Balalaika is the smallest and is rarely seen. The most common size is the Prima. It is approximately two and one-half feet in length. The next two larger sizes are the Second, and Alto Balalaikas. The Oriental Dombra is still used for the Bass-Baritone range. There is a larger Bass and the very large Contrabass Balalaikas.

Our Balalaika

Our Prima Balalaika measures approximately 27″ in length. The body has the classical triangular shape. The back is slightly bowed and made with stave construction in two tones of rosewood. The darker back contrasts with the light colored wood of the soundboard. On the soundboard there is one rosette sound hole. The Apex of the soundboard joins with the narrow neck and is covered by a rosewood finger guard. The lower two corners of the soundboard are likewise protected by dark rosewood accent pieces. The peg-box at the end of the neck is at an acute angle to the neck and body. The strings run from the tuning pins over the metal frets on the neck, across the movable soundboard and are secured on the base of the instrument. Our Balalaikas are shipped in a vinyl covered plywood case.

Tuning the Balalaika

Before tuning, the proper bridge position must be located. First find the nut. The nut is the ivory-toned bar at the joint between the neck and the peg box. Measure the distance from the nut to the 12th fret. Repeat this distance from the 12th fret to the bridge location. The nut and the bridge should be equal distance from the 12th fret. Position the bridge at a right angle to the strings.

The Balalaika strings are tuned above middle C to: A, E, E (1st-3rd). The 1st string is the thinnest, and lays over more frets that the 2nd & 3rd strings. Use a piano or electronic tuner as a reference for tuning. To play, the left hand notes the strings while the index finger of the right hand strums high on the soundboard near the neck. The dark rosewood on the soundboard is decorative but also protects the soundboard from the strumming.

Playing the Balalaika

There are similarities and differences between the style of playing a balalaika and a guitar. They are similar in the way they are held when played. You may be most comfortable playing the balalaika while seated in a chair. Hold the neck between the thumb and index finger of your left hand. Tuck the body of the balalaika under your right arm and hold it close to your chest. The corner of the instrument should rest between your knees. This is a very similar position to playing the guitar. Unlike playing the guitar you do not strum the balalaika over the center of the soundboard. The soundboard of the balalaika is a relatively soft un-finished wood. Strumming over the center of the soundboard would disfigure the soundboard. The balalaika is strummed high on the soundboard near the neck. Additionally, when you strum the balalaika the motion is from the elbow. The forearm wrist and hand are relaxed, and you strum with the edge of the thumb or tip of the index finger, not the fingernail. The finger techniques of the left hand more closely resemble the style used to play the violin. An instructional book, the Best Balalaika Method-Yet, is available separately. The book provides music fundamentals, playing techniques, terms, American and Russian melodies and Classical Themes.

What can I do if my natural skin drum head is affected by heat and humidity?
If the head is loosened due to humidity, one can tighten the head with a damp cloth placed on the head for about 15 minutes. Then let the head dry naturally. It is important to make sure water does not get into the glue joint. If the drum is a tabla, water must not get on the gaab (center black dot). Also, applying heat from a hair dryer will tighten the head.

What is the difference between an African drum with hair versus one without?

A skin with hair on it still has the natural oils which produce more subtle and lower bass tones. Also, the hair (and therefore, natural oils) promotes strength. A skin without hair produces a crisper sound with higher pitches.

These are all rope tuned (unless you have a tunable model which uses a tuning wrench) and the heads are tightened by tightening the rope. Click here for instructions.

Description of the Bagpipes

Bagpipes are classified as aerophones. They are reed instruments that utilize an air reservoir. The reservoir allows an uninterrupted stream of air to be directed through the reeds. Such reservoir aerophones are not limited to Scotland and Ireland. Their antiquity can be traced throughout Asia, in North Africa and across Europe.

Buy Bagpipes On Sale Now at Kyle Music

Origin of the Bagpipes

Various forms of bagpipes have been attributed to many ancient civilizations. A style of bagpipe is mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible. Some historians believe the bagpipes had their origin in Sumaria. While others believe it was spread to Persia, India, and the Roman Empire by the Celtic peoples. An Athenian dramatist, writing in the fifth century BC, mentioned the bagpipe. It is important to remember that these instruments were the predecessors of the modern bagpipe. As such they were likely different then the popular form of today. It is also important to remember that you are likely to get as many different versions of the history of the bagpipe as there are writings on the subject. The true origin is still cloudy, resulting in limited knowledge of the history and development of the bagpipe. It has been pointed out that the cloudy history of the bagpipe may be explained in the nature of the pipes themselves. Most importantly, they do not survive the ravages of time. Made of wood and skins the ancient ancestors of the bagpipes have long since gone to dust. The other reason is that the bagpipes have been a commoner’s, or peasant’s instrument. It is unfortunately true that historians tend to dwell on the lifestyle of the rich and famous. The more modern bagpipes, that most of us are familiar with, were actually a war instrument. It was not uncommon for armies to utilize any means at their disposal to instill fear into their enemy. Costumes and loud music were favorite methods of creating fear in the enemy. Some say that the bagpipe was especially suited to this purpose, not just for the sound they create. Blowing a flute or whistle while being attacked can become very difficult when your throat tightens up. The reservoir allowed the piper to play continually, even when breathing may have been difficult. Over the centuries there have been many styles of bagpipe. Along with the reservoir, or bag, these pipes may have one or two chanters, one or more drones and the mouthpiece. There are reeds in each of the drones and chanters. The chanter has finger holes for playing multiple notes, while the drones’ notes are fixed. The various styles of pipes can be divided into two categories. This dichotomy is based on the method used to fill the reservoir. The player can fill the reservoir by blowing with the mouth, as in the traditional Great Highland Bagpipes, or by pumping a bellows, as in the Uilleann pipes. We carry a number of styles that have a reservoir filled by mouth, and we are in the process of developing a bellows style.

You can tape them or fill them with beeswax. This also allows you to make this a left or right-handed pipe. It is important to note that each shaft has its own bridled reed. The bridle allows you to adjust the pitch of each shaft independently.

Uilleann Bagpipes have bellows that are carried under, and are pumped by the arm. The bellows keeps the bag full of air. They have tenor, baritone and bass drones and ” regulators” on the chanters, which play harmonies.

Our Uilleann Starter Set contains bellows, connector pipe, bag and chanter.

Learning To Play the Bagpipes

When you order the practice chanter, the reed will be packaged on the outside so it is easily located. Be careful not to discard it accidentally. To assemble and disassemble the chanter, always hold the chanter at the adjoining ends and slowly twist while applying pressure. Never hold the chanter by the sole. All of our bagpipes include two sets of reeds, hemp, one set of rubber corks, and 8 ounces of Super-Seal seasoning. The reeds all have bridles, which allow the pitch of the reed to be adjusted. Included also is the ” Operation of the Highland Bagpipe” sheet providing information on the structures and care of the instrument. Beginners do not learn to play music on the bagpipes. The beginning student learns on the practice chanter. Learning on the bagpipe is akin to suicide unless you are a hermit. When it is shipped, the chanter is disassembled and the reed is placed on the outside so it is easily located and, hopefully, not easily lost. The practice chanter has three pieces: the mouthpiece, the shorter top body section and the bottom body section with finger holes. With the top and bottom body sections disassembled, hold the bottom body section close to it’s top joint end (never hold or twist the chanter while holding the sole). Fit the reed into the bore of the bottom body section. Hold the top body section close to its joint end. Gently slip the top body section over the reed and bottom body section. The mouthpiece attaches over the top of the top body section. Practice chanters are played like a whistle or recorder. While playing, keep your fingers straight. Try not to use the pads of your fingers. Place your fingers over all the holes, front and back. Lifting one finger at a time plays notes. After each practice session, take the practice chanter apart and shake out the moisture. Plan to spend up to six months to learn your first song properly. After becoming proficient on the practice chanter the student may begin to learn to play the chanter with the bag but without the drones. This is known as ” Playing the Goose.” To do this, you assemble the bagpipe with bag, chanter and mouthpiece. Cork off the drone stocks and play only the chanter. You now learn to play the PIPE chanter like you did the practice chanter. You also learn to blow your arm off the bag, keep the tone even, and then try to walk (hopefully all at the same time). If you can achieve all of that and not pass out or fall over you are ready for the next step. You uncork the stocks and install the drones one at a time, as you become more proficient. The end result is worth the time and patience. Bagpipes, played well, produce a sound that seems to speak to something deep within us. Even people who do not like the bagpipes are drawn to the sound.

Why does the practice chanter make only one note?

Here are 3 suggestions to make it work properly: 1) Make sure the reed is seated properly in the bottom section. 2) When putting the top section (blow cap) on, be careful it doesn’t touch the sides of the reed. 3) Cover the back hole with your thumb or you won’t get other notes to sound. Learn to Play the Bagpipe, by R. T. Shephard, is an excellent tutorial for learning to play. They are available in book, cassette tape and CD.

Are the bagpipes tuned to low A or B flat?

There is little agreement on this question among some makers and pipers - and they seem to change their minds every couple of years. On our Great Highland style pipes low A on the Celtic scale = B flat on the Western scale.

Are reeds and replacement parts available for the smallpipes?

What is included with a set of bagpipes?

Two sets of reeds, corks, seasoning, and hemp (thread) are included with each bagpipe set (except toy bagpipe).

How are the hemp, corks, and seasoning used?

Hemp is used to ensure airtightness. It is tied around the reed, sole, and at the top/bottom sections fitting of the practice chanter; on ferrules, slides, reeds, and on the plug-in ends of the drones, blowpipe, and chanter of the bagpipe. Corks are used to plug up the stocks when seasoning is used. Also, drone stocks are corked when a student is first learning the bagpipe (called ” Playing the Goose”). The bagpipe bag is cowhide and it must be able to retain air. Seasoning keeps the leather soft and airtight. It is applied through the blowpipe stock.

Why is the blackwood bagpipe so expensive?

It is a hard wood of very dense composition; thus giving it the preferred tonal quality for the serious piper.

Your site says the Medieval Small Pipes (BGSP) are in the key of D. Does this mean that they are played the same way as a tin whistle in D?

Our Medieval Small Pipes are in the key of D. The tin whistle has only six holes, while the Small Pipes have eight in front and one in back. There are a number of things that will affect the keys and the range:
1) How hard you blow
2) Placement of the reed; that is, higher
or lower in the bore of the chanter.
3) The reed opening. The note can be
adjusted by opening or closing the reed.

How do I know which type of drumhead is best for me?

The synthetic heads produce clear and crisp sounds in a wide variety of pitches. This “fishtone” synthetic head is also stronger than a natural skin. With this head, you don’t have to worry about heat and humidity affecting the drum as with the natural animal skin heads. The “fishtone” synthetic head is made to sound similar to the natural fishskin heads, which are rarely used since they are so delicate and weather sensitive.

Some people prefer the popular natural goatskin heads, which provide lower, more subtle tones. Kyle Music uses goatskin heads on bodhrans, tambourines, frame drums, some doumbeks, and African style drums, such as the djembe and ashiko.

Calfskin is more translucent than goatskin. It produces higher tones and sharper pitches. Any drumhead that is beat with a mallet is usually calfskin, since it tends to be stronger than goatskin. Calfskin is usually used on zarbs, bongos, and banjos.

What type of fish is the fishskin head made of?

Nile River Sturgeon is used because it tends to be the strongest available. Remember that fishskin heads are delicate. Only a few of the Nile River sturgeon are larger than 12″, which is why these skins are more expensive.

Can I rehead my own drum?

Animal skin heads can usually be put on drums with wood glue and masking tape. Click here for instructions for drum head replacement. However, if you have a ceramic drum with a synthetic head, Mid-East Mfg. Inc. will rehead the drum for you using a proprietary process. Simply send the drum to Mid-East for a rehead (this can be done with natural skin heads also.) Kyle Music does not guarantee to be able to put a head on any drum.

What is the difference in sound between a doumbek and a zarb?

A zarb is mellower and more resonate than a doumbek. The zarb produces a lower “tec”.

What is a “doum” and what is a “tec”?

“Doum” is the term used to refer to stroking the center of the drumhead, creating a lower note. “Tec” is the term drummers use when referring to hitting the drum edge, which creates a higher and sharper note.

What is the difference between the wide neck doumbek versus the narrow neck?

The wide neck doumbek has shorter resonance and a higher “doum”. The flare on the narrow neck drum adds to the resonance resulting in a deeper “doum”.

Origin of the Oud

The Oud is a chordophone. Arabic legend claims the Oud to be a very long lived instrument with an illustrious history. These legends attribute the invention of the Oud, in the 3rd century, to Lamak, the grandson of the first man- Adam. Modern musical historians place the inception of the Oud much later.

The Oud underwent a number of changes during the Abbasid Caliphate, or Arab Golden Age. Reportable, the great Iraqi musician Zeriab was driven out of Baghdad and took the Oud with him to Spain. There, by the Moorish Period (711-1492), it finally evolved its characteristic stave body construction. At that time Spain was a great center of learning, science and art. It attracted influential persons from varied cultures. The music played on the Oud reflected the melding of the Greek, Persian, and Arabic cultures. The instrument and its sounds attracted the attention of eastern peoples in the area. Among the many Middle Eastern innovations brought to Europe by the returning Crusaders was the Oud. In Europe the Oud eventually evolved into the Troubadour’s Lute.

Description of the Oud

The Oud has a large pear-shaped soundboard. The soundboard has three ornately carved rosettes that function as sound-holes. The larger rosette is under the strings, while two smaller rosettes are above and below the strings. There are six courses of strings, with two strings per course. Traditionally the strings were plucked with a plectrum made of an eagle feather or of water buffalo horn.

The Strings are attached on the face of the soundboard and run over a fret-less neck. Traditionally Oud strings ran in four courses of two each. Latter a fifth course was added. Today it is common to see five courses of two stings and an additional single string. Tin order to more evenly distribute the stress of the strings they attach to tuning pegs from alternate sides of the peg-box. The peg box is attached to the neck at an acute angle and is almost the same length as the neck The neck is relatively short, less that half as long as the length of the soundboard.

Curving deeply behind the soundboard is the body of the Oud. The Body is constructed of interlocking bent boards. This style of construction is called stave construction. Often the staves are of alternating dark and light colored woods to add to the visual interest of the body.

Our Oud

Kyle Music offers several styles of Ouds.

The OUDR is the Arabic style Oud made in the traditional stave construction. It is approximately 29 inches long, 15 wide, and 8.5 deep. The Body, neck and peg-box are made of rosewood. The soundboard is a light colored spruce wood that is left un-finished for better sound quality. The Sound-holes are lace-like rosettes cut directly from the soundboard. There is a dark rosewood plate under the strings that protects the soundboard while the instrument is being played. There are eleven strings. The first two courses of two strings, each are the higher notes and are nylon. The middle three courses of two strings each and the last string, are metal wound and are the lower notes. Each OUDR is shipped in its own hard sided carrying case, which can also be purchased separately (OUDC).

The OUD1 is approximately 32 inches long, 16 wide, and 8.5 deep. The soundboard is a light colored wood with a thin protective finish. The Sound-holes are lace-like with a decorative faux-nacre laminate. There is a dark decorated plate under the strings that protects the soundboard while the instrument is being played. The body, and neck are decorated with full geometric mosaic of black, white, and gray faux nacre. There are eleven strings. The first course, of two strings, is nylon. The next three courses of two strings each are nylon wound. The last course of two strings and the final low string are nylon wound with copper. Each OUD1 is shipped in its own soft sided carrying case.

The OUD4 is approximately 32 inches long, 14.5 wide, and 9 deep. The soundboard is a light colored wood that is left un-finished for better sound quality. The Sound-holes are lace-like. Around each sound hole on the soundboard are faux nacre mosaics. There is a dark decorated plate under the strings that protects the soundboard while the instrument is being played. The body and neck are stave construction with straight line inlays between the staves. There are eleven strings. The first course, of two strings, is nylon. The next three courses of two strings each are nylon wound. The last course of two strings and the final low string are nylon wound with copper. Each OUD4 is shipped in its own soft sided carrying case.

The OUD6 is approximately 31 inches long, 15 wide, and 8.5 deep. The soundboard is a light colored wood that is left un-finished for better sound quality. The Sound-holes are lace-like wood with plastic laminate. Around each sound hole on the soundboard are faux nacre mosaics. There is a dark plate under the strings that protects the soundboard while the instrument is being played. The body is stave construction with straight line and mosaic inlays. There are eleven strings. The first course, of two strings, is nylon. The next three courses of two strings each are nylon wound. The last course of two strings and the final low string are nylon wound with copper. Each OUD6 is shipped in its own soft sided carrying case.

The OUDT is approximately 30 inches long, 15 wide, and 8 deep. The soundboard is a light colored wood that is left un-finished for better sound quality. The Sound-holes are lace-like wood. Around each sound hole on the soundboard decorative circular patterns. There is a dark plate under the strings that protects the soundboard while the instrument is being played. The body and neck are stave construction with alternating colors. There are eleven strings. The first two courses, of two strings each, are nylon. The next three courses and last single string are nylon wound with metal. Each OUDT is shipped in its own soft sided carrying case.

Sold individually, Kyle Music offers a hard sided case OUDC, the Elementary Course of Study for the Oud by Elias (OUDB) and Oud String Set by D’Addario (OUDG).

There is a miniature, toy like, Oud (OUDM). It has the failure shape and body construction, three courses of two nylon strings each, and one rosette sound-hole. This instrument can e used as a toy for a child or for a decoration.

Buy Ouds on sale now at Kyle Music

Tuning the Oud

When the Arabic Oud had four courses of two strings each the tuning was CDGA or ADGC. When the fifth course was added it was usually tuned to G. The sixth course with the single string is usually tuned to D. So with six courses the tuning, low to high, is DGCDGA or DGADGC. Although it should not be implied that other tunings are incorrect. This instrument can be tuned differently for different styles of music. In general the Turkish Oud, which is slightly smaller, is tuned slightly higher. The difference in tuning is related to the vocal preferences of the different cultural groups. The DGADGC tuning is preferred by the Arabic and EABEAD preferred by the Turkish players.

Buy Ouds on sale now at Kyle Music

Playing the Oud

Sit upright and cross your right leg over the left. Hold the neck in your left hand and rest the body on your right thigh. Your right arm should wrap around the base of the Oud so you hand comes to the soundboard. Do not drape your right arm over the top of the instrument. The soundboard should be vertical and not visible to the player. The right thigh and arm should support the Oud leaving the left arm and hand free to move along the neck. The fingers of the left hand note the strings on the neck. Some experiences players note the strings with their fingernail, and not the tip of the finger.

The Oud plectrum is not held the way you would hold a guitar pick. The guitar pick is held between the tip of the thumb and the tip edge of the index finger. The Oud pick is long and thin, reminiscent of the eagle’s quill. It is more flexible than the guitar pick. You can make your own pick from a number of objects including, cutup plastic bleach bottles or any number of other plastic objects. The thinner the plastic the more delicate the sound, thicker plastic provides a louder sound.

The Oud pick lies along the edge of the index finger, and protrudes beyond the end of the finger. The pad of the thumb, not the tip, then gently rests over the pick and holds it in place. When playing, the thumb will be parallel to the soundboard and your index finger will point at the strings. The motion of playing is then with the wrist not the forearm. Practice keeping your fingers, hand and arm as relaxed as possible.
