Hi,
I work for a large insurance company and assess fire and safety for the company. I am often face to face with the apartment and building owners. What is the number of civilian deaths due to non working smoke alarms thus far in 2014? Isnt it at about 19 now?

Yes, the total represents the entirety of LAFD personnel who were "dispatched to the incident" and worked at the scene (often on a rotational basis) over a nearly 8 hour time span to address all issues of incident management, including the support of a comprehensive death investigation. The specific units are identified above. We hope this information helps.

You're most welcome. The "listen live" link will remain on this blog and our alert site (it currently links to a privately owned scanner radio) for the time being. There are plans well underway to bring a more than a dozen separate digital quality LAFD audio feeds directly from our Dispatch Center to the Internet. We're not yet sure if they all will route through Broadcastify, the current service provider, or another service. If and when any changes happen, they will be prominently posted here on our LAFD News and Information site. In the coming year, workload permitting, we hope to enhance the on-line information at LAFD.ORG to offer helpful details, like a glossary.

Thank you Brian, for your reply. I understand that about having a day off. Are you going to keep the Listen Live on the new website? Although I get confused sometimes on the dispatches. I live in Aurora, Colorado and I love hearing the calls. Is there going to be a new glossary? When I read who responded to a fire I see letters I don't know. I guess that's all I can think of at this moment. Thank you all on the LAFD.

Thanks for the note, and for your long-standing support of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Erik Scott is enjoying a well deserved day off. As we sense others have similar thoughts, kindly allow me to reply in his absence.

The pending updates to LAFD online content, including LAFD.ORG will launch in September, and remain an ongoing process. Though it may take several weeks to implement the most popular and necessary features, it is our hope that in the coming year, we'll have a clearer presentation of our organization, its members and mission.

One of our goals is (hopefully this year) to include a page specific to each Neighborhood Fire Station.

In the weeks ahead, we'll unveil some (admittedly very) basic offerings, and with your help and guidance, grow them over time. As this long overdue project develops, we'll announce ways for you and others to share your thoughts and offer your opinions.

We were deeply saddened to learn the 12 year old girl has died. According to an official statement published in the Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Police Department officials say the girl succumbed on Thursday, August 7. We regretfully have no further information to provide at this time.

Thanks for your inquiry. Once medical care is formally transferred to hospital staff, the LAFD is no longer apprised of the patient's condition or outcome.

The hospitals are keenly aware of our collective interest in the status of these patients, but cannot release that information publicly without patient or family approval.

While we await further details, we encourage family discussions of water safety. A simple 7-point plan is available via our recent "Pool Safely" article, which can be found here

Thanks for the note. Much has changed in 8 years, and the current ownership and conditional use permits of that parcel could not be independently determined by our staff this weekend.

Our friends at the City of Los Angeles, Department of General Services Real Estate Division handle such matters on a full-time basis for all City Departments, and can confirm if the City is still the sole owner, and if any specific agency, purpose or plans are presently associated with the site.

While we concur that additional LAFD facilities are desirable for many neighborhoods, the construction, staffing and operation of a new Fire Station is not something that the Fire Department decides unilaterally.

Given that our discussion regards an eight years old decision - under a different Mayor, City Council, Fire Commission and Fire Chief, not to mention a City and LAFD (as well as real estate and construction costs) that are ever-changing, it seems likely that the full process for evaluating, funding and selecting a new Fire Station site would take place before a new station is constructed. That is not to say that the much anticipated "Station 31" site you've mentioned would be disregarded, but that the decision making process by City elected and appointed leaders would take into account the dynamics of the community and our agency at that time.

Along with the City's Department of General Services Real Estate Division, we encourage you to contact your City Council member, as our agencies are subordinate to them, and their decisions related to new municipal facilities.

To clarify, the land is still being held for LAFD should the funding ever be available for a new station (31), correct?

Sylmar desperately needs additional firefighters, equipment and a 2nd station to keep up with the demands of this community.

The vagaries of the justice system - as the needs of the accused (homeless or otherwise) are indeed issues worthy of perpetual discussion.

How prosecutors, defenders, judge and/or jury have or may choose to deal with the accused - and those who may later be convicted, is not something that can be allowed to sway LAFD Investigators from actively and ethically pursuing their sworn duty.

Arson is a particularly wicked crime that has proven not only to destroy property, but take innocent lives. Our agency remains confident that the justice system will accept the evidence in this case, and then take appropriate action in the best interest of our community as whole.

Dear Friend of the LAFD,

Pools and spas are but a few of the areas where drowning can occur. Bathtubs, fountains - even unattended household buckets have led to fatalities. Our perpetual reminder to "always watch the water" extends to the ocean, rivers and streams. When choosing a swim site, we suggest one that has a full-time trained and certified lifeguard in attendance.

When involved with any recreation on open water, the LAFD suggests a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket appropriate for your activity be worn at all times.
