At the party for Lee Daniels and black Hollywood held Thursday night, Comedian Eddie Griffin thanked JV Wines when he shushed the crowd during his speech to say, “the people that paid for the booze at this party want you to hear what they are saying up on stage here.” Johndrow quipped, “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

The Creative Coalition

Along with Premiere.com, The Creative Coalition hosted the HAVEN360 Editorial Photo Studio & Gallery during the daytime hours where Oscar contenders and attendees were photographed for the website and for the Art & Soul project by well-known photographer, Brian Smith. The Art & Soul book series features portraits of many stars such as Taraji P. Henson, David Hyde Pierce, Zooey Deschanel, Kerry Washington, Gina Gershon, and Alyssa Milano alongside their personal message on the arts and arts funding. The books are distributed on Capitol Hill to encourage policymakers to make arts in schools and the National Endowment of the Arts a top priority.

David Johndrow is the founder and self-proclaimed wine fanatic who leads one of the hottest new boutique wineries in Napa. His wine has a strong following among the Hollywood elite. While the immediate cause of death was unknown, law enforcement sources indicated that Haim’s death had the appearance of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs. No illegal drugs were found at the scene.

According to the latest post on Corey’s Myspace page, Corey Haim died of pulmonary congestion, the actor’s mother confirmed to Access Hollywood’s Maria Menounos.

Judy Haim told Maria that she received an early courtesy call from the LA County Coroner’s Office who told her that an autopsy found her son had an enlarged heart and his lungs were filled with water. His cause of death was due to pulmonary congestion.

According to a variety of sources, Haim struggled with drug addiction throughout his life.

Haim was best known for his roles as a child star in the 1980s, including such films as Murphy’s Romance, Lucas, The Lost Boys, and Dream a Little Dream.

In late 2006, Haim mounted a return to show business, once again partnering with longtime friend and coworker Corey Feldman to produce a reality show entitled The Two Coreys, for The A&E Network.

Despite his off-screen issues, Haim was slated to appear in two films in 2010: The Pick Up and SAD (Standard American Diet).

William Wordsworth once wrote that “poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings… recollected in tranquility.”

If we assume Wordsworth is right, we have to grant that anyone can be an artist. Obviously, almost everyone has the capacity for emotion and reflection. But in the means of their expression, all are not created equal.

Our society demands equality but prizes individuality. We find ourselves torn between poles of conformity and independence – handcuffed by our own aspirations.

The true artist is he who finds the middle ground and expresses it with clarity.

Enter Human Brother – the stage name of emerging Los Angeles-based artist / songwriter / producer / renaissance man JD Shultz. Human Brother’s debut album, “Vision Days on the Life Ride”, dares to be bold, and succeeds stunningly. To the untrained ear, characterizing Human Brother’s sound would be an exercise in futility. He draws inspiration from so many sources that to lump him into one category seems an affront to his sublime genre-bending effort.

Shultz calls his creation “Hu-Manitronic”. That may, in fact, be the most fitting description, as “Vision Days” so clearly embodies everything that we should be proud to call human. The pain and joy of everyday existence swirl in a watercolor of sound. Guitar elements and chord progressions are often reminiscent of Northern European and South Asian influences, but still cannot fully encompass the breadth of content that “Vision Days” offers. Each song captures a different feel, featuring hybrid elements ranging from 80’s-style synthpop to uptempo electronic to alt-rock.

The album leads off with “Floor on Fire”, a powerful composition replete with electronic influences and thumping bass. Next up is “Behind You Now”, a song filled with longing for simpler days. Batting third is “You Are Everything”, a united celebration of all things human, featuring Turkish violins and resounding African choirs.

“When Will I”, the most hauntingly beautiful track on “Vision Days”, is naked in its sincerity of emotion. He deals in simple truths on a personal level, and we find comfort in communion with his honesty.

Following “When Will I” is “The Lucky Ones”, a song that reflects on what could have been. “Step to the Side” is a light but provocative electronic piece with a message – greed is the wool pulled over our eyes. “Stars Are Ours to Name” is innocent and playful, in the realm of Neil Young or Beck, but it reveals a deeper vulnerability in the artist. “Torture and Grace” rounds out the first ten tracks with a feel that fuses funk, jazz, and rock.

The word for “poet” in Greek literally means “maker” or “creator”. In “Vision Days”, we find a lyrical quality that ascribes directly to the Greeks’ meaning of poet – Shultz is a creator in the truest sense of the term. He derives originality from the fact that his lyrics are completely devoid of affectation.

Anyone can write down his feelings, but few are so gifted with the ability to express them. “Vision Days on the Life Ride” strips away pretense. What’s left? Purity of sense and of action. The distillation of purpose.

Hot couple Peter Saarsgard & Maggie Gyllenhaal helped each other out with the “charitable chore.”  Saarsgard said “that’s very dirty, let’s see if she knows how to do this,” while taking to the task with the LG Electronics Kompressor Vacuum, Gyllenhaal said “If I lean over, my breasts may pop out of my dress!”

Best Actress winner Gabourey Sidibe preferred to use the LG Kompressor Vacuums hose feature, saying “I want to use the hose!  Gotta use the hose!” Actress Regina King asked someone to hold her purse, sharing “I need to focus!” as she vacuumed up the sand. Laura Dern doesn’t normally vacuum, but said she did it charity.

Actor winner Jeff Bridges said “Let’s do it. Whoa!” Best Director winner Lee Daniels asked if he was being “Punk’d” while vacuuming up the sand and Lenny Kravitz shared “When I have time, I love to vacuum!” as he vacuumed with his daughter Zoe.

Jodie Foster exclaimed “That sand is mine!” as she made sure to pick up every little grain.

Hollywood catering specialist John Spagnuolo of Creative Gourmet served up lamb chops and shrimp from the grill while cocktails and Bud Light Lime were served from the Blue Ice Martini Bar, sponsored by Waterford Crystal.

Offering a healthier alternative to the standard fare, Chef Alex Fioroni prepared an organic buffet of Bod-Health Nutrition’s metabolism-boosting hamburgers and chicken with ginger.

The festivities, however, were not without a sense of purpose – the event featured a “Hollywood Icons for Haiti” photo shoot with celebrity photographers Ryan Forbes, Ron Newkird, Scott Nathan, and Robert Sebree in association with Porkchop Production Services, Inc. and Workhorse Productions, Inc. Autographed portraits will be donated to an auction benefitting American Red Cross – Haiti Relief.

The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spcaLA), and the P.S. I Love You Foundation (educating  and empowering at-risk children) were also present to raise funds and awareness for their respective causes.

More Than Guitar Heros

Although guitar stars often take the lead in modern popular music, rock & roll has always been a group activity, and Activision’s Band Hero aims to gets the whole crew into the act.
