PSALM 138
Here are two metrical paraphrases of Psalm 138 by David Schütz. If reproducing either of these versions, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm. The following may be sung to the tune of ‘The Greatest Commandment’ (ATA 175).

I give you thanks, Lord, with all my heart;
before the angels I will sing your praise.
I worship you in your holy place
and always thank and praise your holy name.
For you are loving, and faithful too;
your name and your word have been glorified.
And when I called on your holy name,
you gave me your answer and made me strong.

All kings and rulers shall praise you, Lord,
when they have heard your words of truth and love;
and they shall sing of the ways of God:
‘Tremendous is the glory of the Lord’.
Yet, though exalted, he keeps his watch
with love and compassion upon the poor.
The rich and proud, he will still observe,
but like one that watches from far away.

And you preserve me throughout my life,
though trouble meets me everywhere I go.
You stretch your mighty right hand to save,
and fight the anger of my enemies.
The Lord fulfils his promise to me;
forever and ever your love endures.
Do not forsake what your hands have made,
remember you made me and I am yours.

This second version could be sung to the traditional tune Dir, dir, Jehovah (LH 218):

With all my heart, I give you thanks, Lord.
Before the angels I will sing your praise.
I worship in your holy temple
and always thank and praise your holy name.
For you have shown your love and faithfulness,
Your holy name and word are glorified.

And on the day I called upon you,
you gave me answer and you made me strong.
The kings of all the earth shall praise you,
when they have heard your words of truth and love.
They all shall sing about your ways, O Lord:
‘Tremendous is the glory of the Lord’.

Yet, though the Lord is high in heaven,
he still regards the lowly of the earth.
He does not overlook the haughty,
but watches them like one who’s far away.
Though trouble meets me everywhere I go,
your right hand saves me from my enemies.

The Lord will keep his promise to me;
your steadfast love, O Lord, will always last.
Stretch out your hand and come to save me!
Do not forsake the work your hands have made.
With all my heart, I give you thanks, O Lord.
Before the angels I will sing your praise.

PSALM 130
The following is a metrical paraphrase by David Schütz , which may be sung to the tune of Kingsfold (‘I heard the voice of Jesus say’, LH 306, TIS 585, AT 137). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

Out of the depths, I cry to you,
Lord, hear my tearful prayer!
If you should mark iniquity,
O Lord God, who could stand?
But you forgive the sorry soul,
so all may fear your name.
I wait for you, for you I long,
and in your word I hope.

I wait for him far more than those
who wait for dawn to come.
O Isra-el, hope in the Lord!
With him is steadfast love.
He has great power to redeem,
and he alone can save
his people from their deadly sin
and raise them from the grave.

Now honour the Lord, all you angels in heaven,
now honour the Lord with all glory and power,
now honour the name of the Lord with all due glory,
and worship in his temple of splendour with awe.

The voice of the Lord thunders over the waters;
the voice of the Lord is majestic and strong;
the voice of the Lord makes the cedars crack and splinter,
and Lebanon and Sirion dance to his song.

The voice of the Lord flames out lightning in flashes;
the voice of the Lord shakes the desert with storms;
the voice of the Lord rips up trees and flattens forests,
while all within his temple cry ‘Glory!’ to God.

The Lord was enthroned on the flood and the waters;
the Lord sits enthroned as our King and our God;
the Lord will give strength to his people in their trouble,
the Lord will give his people the peace of his word.

PSALM 104
The following metrical version of Psalm 104:24-34, 35b by David Schütz may be sung to the tune of ‘What wondrous love is this’ (LHS 794, ATA 145). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

How many are your works, O Lord God, and how wise!
Your creatures fill all parts of the earth.
Where ships sail to and fro, on seas so great and wide,
there countless creatures live, and the whales have their sport,
and you have made them all, great and small.

See how they look to you for their food in due time.
You open up your hand, they are filled.
But when you hide your face, they suffer in dismay.
You take away their breath, and they die and decay;
they all return again to the dust.

You send your spirit out to create life again,
and you renew the face of the earth;
rejoice, Lord, in your works, your glory evermore!
You look upon the earth, and it trembles and quakes;
the mountains pour out smoke at your touch.

So I’ll sing to the Lord, for as long as I live;
I’ll sing my praise to God all my life.
And may my words and thoughts be pleasing to the Lord,
for in the Lord alone will my soul find its joy:
O bless the Lord, my soul! Praise the Lord!

PSALM 1
The following metrical paraphrase of Psalm 1 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune Ellers (LH 514). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

Happy are they whose love is in God’s law,
those who do not walk in ungodly ways,
those who don’t stand among the sinful crowd,
those who refuse to sit with those who scoff.

They meditate on God’s law day and night.
They are like trees that grow beside a stream;
they will bear fruit at every harvest time,
they will not die, but thrive in all they do.

But the ungodly – they are not like this!
They are like chaff that scatters in the wind.
They cannot stand before the Lord their judge
in the assembly of God’s righteous ones.

All those will perish who walk in the path
of the ungodly, following their way.
But the Lord knows the way of all his saints,
who love his law and live in righteousness.

PSALM 47
The song ‘Clap your hands’, by Jimmy Owens (ATA 166), is based on Psalm 47:1.

The following metrical version of Psalm 47 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune Aus meines Herzens Grunde (LH 107). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

O clap your hands, all peoples
and shout to God with joy.
The Lord Most High is awesome,
the King of all the earth.
He gives us victory,
and puts us over nations.
He chose a good land for us,
for Jacob, whom he loves.

See now, our God ascending
upon his throne with shouts!
See how our Lord arises
to heaven with trumpet blast!
Sing praises to our God.
Sing praises, O sing praises,
to God, the king of nations,
sing praises with a psalm.

Our God rules over nations
upon his holy throne.
The leaders of the peoples,
now gather all around,
with all God’s holy saints
who own the God of Abram.
Their forces are surrendered,
and God is Lord of all.

PSALM 98
The chorus of ‘Sing a new song unto the Lord’ (ATA 150) by Dan Schutte is based on Psalm 98. The song could be used for the psalm, although the verses are not really a translation of the psalm itself.

The following paraphrase of Psalm 98 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune Wir pflügen (‘We plough the fields and scatter’, LH 563, TIS 130). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

Let all the earth shout praises;
ring out your song with joy!

Sing the Lord a new song,

Resources for Mother’s Day
PRAYERS FOR MOTHER’S DAY
One of the following petitions may be included in the prayer of the church:

We thank you for adopting us into your family through the miracle of baptism, and for calling us to be brothers and sisters to each other through Jesus, the only Son of God.
Today, loving Father, we pray for our mothers:
* who cared for us when we were helpless
* who comforted us when we were hurt
* whose love and care we usually took for granted, as we often take your love for granted
Today we pray for:
* those who are grieving the loss of their mother, maybe even years after they were separated
* those who never knew their biological mother, and now yearn for her
* those who have experienced the wonder of an adopted mother’s love
* the families separated in the wars in ___. Lord, give them special blessings.
Keep us united with Christ, so that we can love in the way he loves us and all people.
We ask this for Jesus’ sake.

OR
Loving Father in heaven,
we thank you for the love of the mothers you have given us,
whose love is so precious that it can never be measured in dollars and cents,
whose time does not seem to be measured in the hours they put in per week,
whose patience seems to have no end and can even seem to stretch past breaking point.
May we see your loving hand behind them and guiding them.
We pray for those mothers who fear they will run out of love, or time, or patience,
and ask you to bless them with your own special love and the gifts of more time and more patience.
And we pray for children and fathers, that they may appreciate, love and support their mothers and wives.
We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord and brother.

OR
God our Father, we pray:
for new mothers, coming to terms with both the joys and demands of motherhood;
for pregnant mothers, expectant and wondering, or fearful;
for those mothers who are tired, stressed, ill or depressed;
for those who struggle to balance the demands of work and children;
for those who have to struggle with difficult decisions about whether or not to become a mother or to have another child;
for those who are unable to feed their children due to poverty;
for those whose children have physical, mental or emotional disabilities;
for those who have children they do not want;
for those who raise children on their own;
for those who have lost a child through death or abortion;
for those who care for the children of others;
for those whose children have left home;
for those whose children have rejected their love;
and for those whose desire to be a mother has not been fulfilled.
Bless all mothers, that their love may be deep and tender,
and that they may lead their children to know and do what is good, living not for themselves, but for God and for others.

HYMNS AND SONGS FOR MOTHER’S DAY
The following family hymns and songs may be used for Mother’s Day:
LHS
588 O blest the house, whate’er befall (* modernised version available)
589 O blessed home where man and wife
AT
141    Mary’s child
212 Hush now (This lullaby speaks of God’s parenting love)
TIS
581 Happy the home that welcomes you, Lord Jesus

The following hymn was written by Delores Jenson (alt. by David Schütz). It may be sung to the tune Hyfrydol (LHS 164).

God gave mothers to protect us,
and to guide us in love’s way.
They were with us from our cradle,
teaching us to watch and pray.
Precious Saviour, bless our mothers;
or our mothers’ memory.
Precious Saviour, help us honour
those who gave us love so free.

As we grew they stayed beside us,
listening, loving constantly.
They spoke to us words of wisdom,
though, at times, so hard to see.
Precious Saviour, bless our mothers;
or our mothers’ memory.
Precious Saviour, help us honour
those who taught us how to be.

(This verse may be sung by mothers who are present)
Now as mothers, Lord, we ask you
be our helper and our guide.
Give us courage, bless our efforts,
let us live love deep and wide.

SONG BASED ON GOSPEL
This song is related to the gospel reading. It is by Claire Kleinig, based on ‘Be still and know’ (AT0 311) ©1988 the Iona Community. By permission from Willow Connection.

I am the Vine; in me there is life,
and there is none beside me. (Repeat)

I am the Vine; I keep you alive,
and there is none beside me. (Repeat)

I am the Vine; in me you bear fruit,
and there is none beside me. (Repeat)

I am the Vine; remain in my love,
for there is none beside me. (Repeat)

PSALM 22
The following paraphrase of Psalm 22:25-31 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune ‘Vine and fig tree’, ATN 36 (note that in the second last bar the second crochet must be played as two quavers). If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

Now when I stand in the congregation,
there all my praise will come from God.
And in the presence of those who fear him,
there I will pay my vows to him.
Then there will be food for the poor,
then they will all be satisfied.
Praise him, all those who seek the Lord,
and may your spirit never die.

Then shall the ends of the earth remember
and ev’ry land turn to the Lord,
and all the fam’lies of ev’ry nation
shall worship him and hear his word.
For all dominion is the Lord’s,
power and might belong to him.
He rules the nations as their king,
he brings his love and grace to them.

Then even those who have died will worship,
and I will always live for him.
And generations to come will serve him,
for they will all be told of him.
They will proclaim his saving love
to those who have not yet been born.
They will be told what we have learnt
that, by the Lord, it has been done.

PSALM 133
The following paraphrase of Psalm 133 by David Schütz is sung to the tune ‘A New Commandment’. Use the music in ATN 65; the tune at LHS 853 is slightly different. It is also at TIS 699. (Note: the word ‘oil’ is pronounced with one syllable here.) If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

How good and pleasant it is when we live
just like brothers and sisters, together as one,
just like brothers and sisters, together as one.
It’s like precious oil poured out on the head of Aaron,
and down his beard onto his vestments.
It’s like dew of Hermon descending on Mount Zion,
where God gives life to those he blesses.
