If dreams can provide me with answers, protection and guidance, why are dreams so difficult to understand? It’s not that they are so “difficult to understand.” You weren’t taught that 1) dreams are important; 2) or instilled with a desire to understand these messages; 3) dreams are a reflection of your life; and 4) understanding dreams takes time – time to write them down, time to understand the symbols and time to put everything together so you understand the message.

It’s very easy to run to a dream book or to ask your friend what your dream means. That’s only a “quick fix.” It’s more important that you take the time to understand your own dream.

The steps to understanding your dreams are:

1. You must have a strong desire to remember and understand your dreams. Maybe knowing that your dreams are a continuation of your daily life will be incentive; or, that you might be given an answer you have been searching for.

2. You must be persistent by taking daily action focusing on dreaming, remembering and understanding your dream.

3. Lay still upon waking and let the dream come to you.

4. You must write down or record your dreams.

5. The T-method to understand your dream:

Draw a line down the middle of the page:

You just had a dream where you were driving your car on a country road. You saw a red sports car going in the opposite direction; a puppy was laying hurt in the road and a large rock was blocking your way.

Step 1 – You would write the symbols on the left side:

Symbol | Meaning

Step 2: On the right side, write down what these symbols mean to you. In this particular dream, the dreamer was thinking about making an investment in a real estate project. Knowing these facts, we can fill in the meaning.

This dreamer decided not to make this investment. He learned afterwards that the main investor had backed out. Because he paid attention to his dream, he was protected from losing his money in a poor investment.

6. If you didn’t or don’t understand your dreams, lightly place your attention on it as you go about your day. An insight, a word or something you read could pop out at you giving you the answer or the understanding that you have been seeking.

Use the above technique to get you started on understanding your own dreams making your life easier and in the end, self-empowered.

I was introduced to the HU over 25 years ago and it has changed my life. HU is a love song to God. Singing HU helps me to calm down and open to the guidance from God. (Sing the HU repeatedly either silently or aloud in long drawn out breaths like the man’s name Hugh for 5 to 20 minutes.) Every day, I do a spiritual exercise (another term for “contemplation”) which starts with singing the HU. This beautiful prayer opens me to guidance, answers and peace.

I’d like to share some stories of how singing the HU has been helpful to other people.

A young special needs girl was with her mother in a store. A woman I’ll call Sara walked in. The young girl reached up and wanted to be picked up by Sara. Her mother was amazed as her daughter doesn’t normally do this. Several times during Sara’s visit to the store, this young girl kept coming to her to be picked up. The mother wanted to understand why her daughter was so open up to this stranger. Sara shared with her that she gently sang the “HU” in her daughter’s ear. Sara also told the mother that when her daughter gets upset and she wants to quiet her, sing the HU. When she wants to show her daughter that she is loved, sing HU softly to her.

Another story is about Jane who had a cancerous tumor. She shared her concerns with her friend, Cynthia, who shared the HU with her. When Jane went to the doctor, he prescribed some medication for her to help reduce the tumor. Jane began to sing the HU while she visualized the tumor shrinking. When Jane went for a check-up, the doctor was amazed that the tumor was shrinking and reduced the medicine.

The doctor was shocked that after a few months, the tumor and cancer were completely gone. The doctor told Jane that the medicine was not to shrink the tumor; it was to use just until her surgery.

Jane knew singing the HU, visualizing the tumor shrinking and believing that the cancer would disappear all worked together for this positive result.

When you are in traffic or in line in a supermarket, sing the HU to become calm. When you want to contemplate, sing the HU. Sing the HU if you love God.

One of my passions is dreams and that is why I have created this special event to bring to you the power that lies within all of us.

Did you know that by asking a question before you go to sleep you can receive an answer?  Dreams are like a muscle; it may lie dormant and then one day you decide to exercise.  At first the muscle may rebel and then exercising becomes easier.  It is the same with dreaming; you can learn the steps to learn how to dream.  I can hear you saying,  “Well, that’s interesting; so I dream.  Now what?“

A whole world will open up to you. Answers, clarity and direction will be yours for the asking!  For example:  Do you spend time during the day worrying about “what to do about this or that?”

When you focus on your questions before you go to sleep, mind is stepping out of the way and answers are allowed to come through.  You  wake up with answers for any and all areas of your life.

The following are examples of how dreams have helped me make my life easier:

1. Dreams showed me the house I bought and loved;
2. Dreams have showed me about an upcoming job;
3. Dreams showed me what to do about a long-standing relationship.

Imagine you woke up one morning and you suddenly realized that you lived with friends and advisors who could provide you with helpful and consistent advice about your life.  Wouldn’t you want to check in with them – at least occasionally? What if you discovered that this advice was free and was always with you?  In fact, it was an integral part of you!  It extended to much needed insights into any area of your life, whether it was work, health, spiritual growth, finances, relationships, or, even your future?  Eventually you might think it foolish to ignore the wisdom of individuals who knew the answers, who loved you unconditionally, and who only had your best interests in mind. And yet most individuals ignore this very insight every day because it comes to them in the form of their dreams. Your night time dreams –open your mind and heart to receive and use this priceless information. 

With that being said, I believe that it’s about time attention and celebration was centered on dreams!  Again, the night time ones! 

There’s nothing mystical or magical about dreams.  They are an integral part of us.  In fact, there is no separation!  It’s just that we need to place our attention on them.

We all sleep between 6 to 8 hours a night.  Wouldn’t that be a great time to focus on any issue or concern we may be facing? Imagine, writing down the issue or concern, lightly focusing on it as we fall asleep and voila, in the morning we have the answer.  Now, I’m not going to say that if you haven’t been paying attention to your dreams in the past that all of a sudden, you’re going to remember your dreams.  After all, when a person hasn’t done physical exercise in a while, it’s going to take time before the body adjusts to exercising.  It’s the same thing with dreaming; the dream muscle needs to be strengthened.  After it’s strengthened and you’re  paying attention, watch out!  You will be enjoying the answers coming to you, whether you’re sleeping or awake!

 Unbeknownst to the majority of people, using the word “retarded” or “retard” brings up a lot of feelings with parents of special needs children.  It can be compared to the red flag that the matador holds up before a bull!

As the mother of a mentally retarded son with developmental disabilities, I do not understand what all the fuss is about.  When Ira was born, the term “mentally retarded with developmental delays” was acceptable.

I can understand how the word “retarded” earned a bad name when children and adults. who were not knowledgeable about this community, used the words “retard” and “retarded” derogatively. 

Society wants to use the words “intellectually disabled.”  According to Dictionary.com, disabled mean “crippled; injured; incapacitated.”  My son are none of those things.   The word “disability” means “a physical or mental handicap, especially one that prevents a person from living a full, normal life or from holding a gainful job.”  He might not be able to hold a fulltime job; he does live a full, normal life for him.

Instead of being hung up on the term, let’s bring awareness of this “special needs community” to the public.  Let’s share with them how loving and productive these citizens can be.  Let’s share with others how much they teach us.  How much they fill our lives with joy when they take that first step, or utter their first words or tell us “they love us.” 

Let’s band together and promote our special needs child.  Let’s get air time and publicity to bring the wants and needs of this community to the eyes and attention of the world.  Only with education will the stigma of being “retarded” or “special needs” be lessened.

Again, my son is loved unconditionally – no matter what word you use to describe him.

Oh, what do you say after you say you have a “special needs child” and the person wants to know what his special needs are?

1973. It started out like any other year. The first day of the year, you relax. Nothing too strenuous. You don’t want to sap your strength right away, nor do you want to trust your luck.
But this year stated out with a pall laying over Marty and me. Neil and David are our two beautiful redheads. The eldest is 7 years old and our middle child is only six.
This leads you, the reader, to th realization that we have a third child, another son who is just a year old. It’s this child who has us concerned. Ira is to be hospitalized to determine why he hasn’t developed according to normal standards.
Ira hasn’t sat or stood. Hasn’t made a sound. Ira is gorgeous. Brown hair, brown eyes, the cutest nose! You wouldn’t think anything is wrong just by looking at him. Looks can be deceiving, but, also a blessing.
It’s time. Ira is admitted to Jackson Memorial Hospital. He has the very best pediatric neurosurgeon in the state.
Tests, night and day, tests. Back and forth Marty and I travel. Home, hospital, endless hours in the car, endless hours in the hospital. Our other sons hardly see us. One after another, EMG’s, EKG’s, blood tests, urine tests. Ira is a living pin cushion.
Then, one day, they have to tie his legs down to take a 24-hour urine test. Miracles of miracles – he sits up! What happiness, what celebrating!
I look around the pediatric ward. Look at all the other parents, look at their children. Whatever is wrong with Ira, it’s nothing compared to these other children. I count my blessings.
After a week of testing, Nothing. No determination. No result. He has minimal brain damage – no reason, no cure.
There are special people, people who bring joy, sadness, true love, children who teach patience, bring happiness to others. People who don’t demand anything from you. Just give true, unconditional love. Special people. People like Ira. God’s blessing. God’s special gift – Ira!

Karma is misunderstood.  It is frowned upon by most people as something negative when in reality, it is not.  Karma is cause and effect.  Think of it as a bank account.  When you do something positive, you deposit positive energy into the bank and you earn interest.  When you do or say something hurtful or harmful to another person, you make a withdrawal experiencing a reaction (something you probably won’t like).  All of this happens for us to become better people as well as more loving.

We look at karma as a “people” thing.  Karma is all around us – in neighborhoods, in government, in plant and animal life.  Remember the saying, “What goes up, must come down?”  That’s why a government may do good for awhile; then, karma steps in to balance the scales.  That’s the cycle of life.

We don’t recognize these life cycles because we may not be aware of them.  As we step onto a spiritual path, karma and life cycles become more apparent.  Our consciousness is awakened.  For me, I receive instant karma especially when I get angry!  The resolution is for me not to get angry!  How does karma affect you in your life?

Do you have a dream that you are trying to attain? Does it seem unbelievably large or unattainable? Is your dream one of the reasons you are here on planet Earth?

This dream gets you out of bed in the morning. It brings you more alive. There are times, though, that you might need a little extra encouragement.
There are several things that you can do to get your energy positively flowing.

• A “Why” statement will give you the motivation to keep going when times get tough. It will give you the extra push you need to get your energy flowing again.
• A coach will get you out of your “story” and put you on the right path again.
• Another idea is to make a gratitude list and let yourself really feel these items.
• Picture yourself having attained the goal. Step into the success and let yourself really feel the emotion. Enjoy!
• Listen to upbeat music; go for a walk or speak with a very good friend.

Hundreds of thousands of people search the web or purchase books to interpret their own dreams monthly.  While the books and internet fill a need, I’d like to share with you some tips to understand your own dreams.

We all dream every night even though most of us don’t remember them.  For those of us who do remember our dreams, the most important step or the next step is to interpret or understand our dreams.  By understanding our dreams, we will find answers making our lives easier.

Dreams are very personal and have to do with our daily life.  We might have dreams which make us happy; dreams which are confusing; and dreams which may advise us of changes coming in our lives.

The first step is to make a commitment to remember your dreams and to either write them down or record them.  The second step is to have a dream journal where you will record your dream.  I’ve been using the Dreams ‘n More Dream Journal which includes additional guidance as well as places for you to keep track of the symbols in your dreams.

You may want to use the Buddy System where you share the dream with a friend, partner or coach.  They listen to you and ask you questions, such as “What does that mean to you?”  Another question they can ask you is “What does a certain key item in the dream mean to you; i.e., a broken glass, an elevator or a key?” 

As you are talking the dream over with the other person, what pops out at you?  Are you getting a sense of understanding?

You might find that writing the dream down makes the dream clearer to you. Make two columns – one column would have the key items and the other column would have what they mean to you.  The meaning may just pop out at you.  If not, then create a story with these symbols and compare it to what is happening now in your life.

I had asked for a sign several years ago whether or not I should go to Tennessee.  As I was driving around, I noticed a car with a Tennessee license plate which had an “x” on it.  Some people might believe that “x marks the spot.”  I interpreted this to mean that a trip to Tennessee was not appropriate at that time.

What is it that changes an every day occurrence into a waking dream?  It is the awareness of the person having the experience.  A dragging muffler emitting sparks might mean on the surface, that the driver needs to have his muffler fixed, might mean that as well as something else.  Let me explain:  Frank was in a coffee shop looking out the window.  He was thinking about whether or not a friendship he was entering was good or not.  When he saw the dragging muffler, he knew that the friendship was no good.  An every day occurrence which answered his question!

We can choose our own symbols and when they occur, we will be receiving our answer! Waking dreams are very simple to understand.  I believe that “basement” means the past; the “ground floor” means the present; and the “attic” means the future.  I can substitute the freezer (as it is on top) as the “future” and the “inside of the refrigerator” as the present.  If something happens where I see these signs, it is up to me to put the signs and what is happening together.

Just by paying attention to what is happening around me, “life” or “God” is always guiding me.
