I have really enjoyed teaching the Gospel Principles class to our new-members over the years and love these lessons. There is so much to talk about even on the simplest of topics, even in our priesthood class. Yes - a good teacher does help - but reading paragraphs out of the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church books never did a great deal for me. By opening up the scriptures and looking at what is being taught about even these most basic tenets of our faith is inspiring. What does disappoint me is when the Saviour is not mentioned by a speaker or a teacher and how living a particular principle is helping us become more like Him. I do think that we need to focus more on the Saviour in lessons and talks. After all, the whole purpose of the Gospel is to bring individuals and families unto Christ.

What a great video! My husband suffered a spinal cord injury a few years ago as a result of an illness. He was blessed by a faithful priesthood brother that he would heal completely but that it would be a long, hard road. At the time, he was gravely ill and completely paralyzed. This good man wrestled with the Lord over whether or not he was blessing him with that which the Lord wanted him to or if it was "wishful thinking" on behalf of a friend. His recovery was miraculous and swift and baffled the doctors. Three years later, he still suffers minor effects from his illness. Rather than dwelling on the fact that his legs will never completely feel right again as well as other minor issues and being angry and bitter that he wasn't "completely healed", he has been grateful for the nearly complete healing. He is 100% able to function with only minor inconveniences. We call it his "new normal". Complete healing according to OUR definition may never come, but we believe that complete healing according to the Lord's definition DID. He is able to do all the things he could before his illness. Sometimes we need to work with what the Lord gives us and have faith in His plan for us even though it's not what WE wanted.

While reading Elder Whiting's article in Ensign this month, I thought of Elder Bednar's CES broadcast from last year. He discussed the dangers of cyber technologies minimize our physical bodies and gave examples such as Second Life.

"Today I raise an apostolic voice of warning about the potentially stifling, suffocating, suppressing, and constraining impact of some kinds of cyberspace interactions and experiences upon our souls... in a cyber world, these challenges are more pervasive and intense. I plead with you to beware of the sense-dulling and spiritually destructive influence of cyberspace technologies that are used to produce high fidelity and that promote degrading and evil purposes... he can cunningly employ some aspects of modern technology to accomplish his purposes. Please be careful of becoming so immersed and engrossed in pixels, texting, ear buds, twittering, online social networking, and potentially addictive uses of media and the Internet that you fail to recognize the importance of your physical body and miss the richness of person-to-person communication. Beware of digital displays and data in many forms of computer-mediated interaction that can displace the full range of physical capacity and experience."

It worth reading.

We have electronics-free days - no computer, video game, iPod, or TV on those days, unless there is a family activity going on (like watching a movie together). None of the kids have cell phones, but if they did, they would have to check them in at night at a certain time. We've already discussed this (cell phone check-in), so they know it's going to happen.

Our family has decided that we become "detached" at 6:00 pm as a general guideline. That allows us to do other activities as a family. We still stream music and there are other exceptions to the rule (online homework for example), but the blessings have been great and we enjoy the quiet serenity that comes form being unplugged.

Andrew,

Both Matthew and Mike echo my sentiments on the deepest levels. But just to add: I've experienced miraculous (physical) healing on more than one occasion--and yet my present ailments seem to linger. Now perhaps I don't have as much faith this time around. But even so, if I must wait until the resurrection to be cleansed of my psychological illness it will have been worth it because of all that I've learned--and will yet learn, no doubt--in wrestling with it.
