If your Jeep rocks a soft top for the winter, and you do not have a garage, chances are you’ve walked out in the morning and found ice and snow clinging to your rear windows. Annoying, yes – but how you handle it will determine if that annoyance turns into a full-blown problem.

Taking care of your soft top windows in the winter may seem like a common sense thing for many of you out there, but it is definitely a question we are asked here at LED Factory Mart quite frequently this time of year as more and more new Jeep owners join the family. And the answer really isn’t difficult; you just need to be careful.

First off, if you are wondering, it is perfectly ok to use a soft top in the winter. While many owners have dual tops and choose to throw on a hardtop in the winter, a soft top certainly does keep a Jeep warm enough during the cold months as Jeep heaters are pretty powerful and will get the inside toasty in a short amount of time. However, you do need to realize that you cannot treat your back soft top vinyl windows like regular glass car windows.

“Cold weather conditions create a host of challenges for soft top users if you are not careful,” says Smittybilt's Brad Bricker. “Once the temperature hits the freezing mark, the vinyl windows become less pliable and can actually crack when touched.”

Bricker recommends definitely not trying raise or lower the soft top at all when the temperature approaches freezing as vinyl material loses its flexibility in colder temperatures. It is also unwise, he says, to roll-up your vinyl windows during the winter months, or even trying to zipper them open, as the plastic windows can shatter like glass when cold.

So when you see ice or snow on your soft top windows, definitely resist that urge to grab your ice scraper and attack. Scraping those plastic Jeep windows may get the stuff off, but at best you will probably leave behind deep scratch marks on the plastic, or worst case you will crack the plastic and pretty much ruin your day. Plus, says Bricker, “Cold cracks are not covered under the soft tops warranty.”

Another thing to avoid is hitting the windows with your hands or arms in an attempt to ‘bump’ off accumulated snow. You may think the soft snow will just fall off, but instead you’ll probably puncture your window and end up having to purchase replacements.

Finally, you’ll also want to abstain from pouring hot water on the vinyl windows as a way to melt off snow or ice. This may seem like a good idea, and will probably accomplish that goal, but chances are it will also crack the windows as well.

What, then, is the best thing to do so you can remove that stuff off your windows and get on your way?

We've had people tell us they use battery powered hair dryers on the windows to melt away snow and ice, and we've tried it out here too, but realistically the interior heater has the same effect in the same amount of time.

Another thing some people have done is purchase cab or full covers, and place them over the soft top for the night. While this may work somewhat effectively, you still need to exercise caution each time the overlay top is removed.

”It’s best really to just turn the heat up on high when warming up the vehicle and allow the ice and snow to melt on its own,” Bricker says.

This does call for a bit of pre-planning as you’ll need about 10-15 minutes for the heater to effectively do its job and melt off those impediments. However, if you are in a rush, or just forget to start the vehicle ahead of time (it happens to the best of us, don’t worry) then you’ll have to rely on the two side mirrors for visibility until the heater can do its job. These glass side mirrors can be scraped off – you may even have heated side mirrors – so you can get on your way pretty quickly; just remember to drive safely!

Jeep Wrangler JK Diagnostic Codes and How To Check Them

Try as we may to keep our Jeep vehicles running perfect, odds are it will 'throw a code' at some point along the way. Basically what this means is your Jeep's computer has detected some sort of problem with a part on the vehicle, and is letting you know via the Malfunction Indicator Light (check engine light). Unfortunately, the light itself does not specify the problem so here is a simple way to find out what issue your vehicle is having:

Insert your key and turn the ignition to the On position without starting the vehicle. Then, push the key into the ignition cylinder and (while holding it in) turn it to Off then On three times - making sure to end in the ON position. The reason to keep the key pressed in while turning is to avoid the key from catching along the way and interrupting the process. When done correctly, as the key finishes in the On position, your odometer will read a series of six dashes, then display a Diagnostic Trouble Code shortly after. Write down this code and reference from the list below.

Now, some people have noted that they are not able to pull the code by moving the key from On to Off, and instead have found success going from On to Acc and then back. However, if neither of these methods work then it is possible the dash code reader is not functioning correctly. There are many different types of programmers and tuners on the market that can help read and clear these codes, as well as providing a host of other fantastic features like calibrating the speedometer following tire or gearing changes, adjusting the vehicle's engine idle to take advantage of accessories like winches, and provide a 'one touch' ability to activate your Wrangler's Daytime Running Lights.

Once you have pulled the code and cross-referenced this list below, you can let your mechanic/dealership know the issue to expedite the repair process.

It's easy to replace the battery in your remote key fob. The fob is made of two plastic parts that snap together. Inside is a small circuit board, a rubber key pad and a battery.

To replace the battery, follow these steps:

Insert a small flathead screwdriver into the seam near the keyring mount.

Press down on the screwdriver to force the key apart at the seam.

Remove the battery from the housing.

Insert a new CR2032 battery with the negative side down.

Place the circuit board into the key pad, then the key pad into the key.

Snap the two halves together starting at near the key and working to the end.

Tools you'll need to complete this project:

Small flathead screwdriver

New CR2032 Battery

Tips:

When separating the two halves of the key fob, don't use a twisting action or you could damage the plastic. Pressing down works the best. It's easiest to place the half with the battery on top of the half with the circuit board and keypad.
