News: An Anniversary

The fact that we're more than halfway through November is not lost on me, in fact, quite the opposite. Rather, I've been looking forward to today for some time now.

Around this time last year, November 22 in actuality, I stood in front of friends and family and declared that I am the true heir of Gondor. Following that, Sue and I exchanged vows and became husband and wife (her claim to the throne is still pending). A year later, filled with laughter and love, and we're still here.

It seemed only fitting that we celebrate the occasion by getting the hell out of dodge, and enjoy a few days of rest and relaxation. With that, we leave in a few short hours on our trek south and will be returning on Friday.

As always, Lar, McCahan, Becker and Tim will keep things running smoothly in my absence.

News: A Webcomic Education

Never does a day pass when Lar and I don't realize how fortunate we are for the careers that we have. The fact that we are able to spend 12 hours a day doing something that we love, and that it sustains us and our families, never ceases to amaze.

I have always been vocal about my beliefs regarding a career in webcomics. It takes a great deal of work and dedication, a greater deal of luck and a myriad of other ingredients to make it work, but it CAN work. A career in this field is a viable option. Like anything else however, an education would provide a huge leg up.

Because of that, and our desire to help others break through, we have decided to create The Rayne Summers Webcomic Scholarship, at The Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.

The Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS) offers a two-year course of study that centers on the creation and dissemination of comics, graphic novels and other manifestations of the visual narrative. Experienced and internationally recognized cartoonists, writers, and designers teach classes. The school is located in historic downtown village of White River Junction, Vermont, in the old Colodny Surprise Department Store.

Beginning in the fall of '10, we will be covering the full tuition for the selected applicant. The applicant who, I might add, is working towards a career in webcomics. Over the course of the next 5 years, we plan on adding 1 student per year, thus by 2015, the Scholarship will be putting 5 students through the program per year.

This scholarship will be managed by Blind Ferret, though there will be heavy involvement from others in our field, in the form of a board of Directors and a selection committee.

More information will be forthcoming in the next couple of weeks, including fund raising events, application rules and deadlines and more. Keep an eye on this space.

All in all, this is something we're all very excited to be offering.

News: My House, Mouse

In the continuing adventure that is home ownership, I've recently discovered a new joy that is simply unparalleled.

Downstairs, in our front entrance hall, is a closet. And in that closet, lies a bag that is filled with chocolate bars that I purchased from my niece to help support her daycare. For the last few months, I've routinely gone down there at midnight, to get a chocolate fix before going to sleep.

Last week, I did exactly that. I reached into the bag, grabbed a chocolate bar and brought it upstairs where I would eat it while reading. Upon returning to my bedroom and once again reaching for my newly acquired almond-filled chocolate bar, I noticed something unique about this particular bar.

Half the bar was eaten, right through the wrapper. Apparently, someone had beaten me to the punch.

I quickly ran through my mental checklist of who lived in the house, and therefore who could have eaten my chocolate bar. It only dawned on me a few minutes later that no one in the house (Sue and I) had little tiny teeth.

It was about that time that I jumped up, and yelled 'MOUSE' in a higher voice that I would have previously thought I was capable of.

So awesome. We had a mouse. Perhaps more than one. Perhaps many meeces. What was a guy to do?

I did what anyone would do in that situation. I ran downstairs to my workshop, grabbed one of my airsoft guns, loaded it as quickly as possible. Then I began the hunt.

I hope you'll take a minute to realize the absurdity of what I did, as you only need to think of me in my underwear (bow chikka wow wow), holding an airsoft handgun and running around the house screaming "I'm coming for you, Meeces!!!".

OF course, I didn't get any of them, but did manage to shoot my walls a few times (I should not own anything that shoots anything else). The next day, I did the smart thing, and that was to call an exterminator.

Thus far, the traps have caught 3 meeces, which I then took the traps, drove up north, and set the little darlings free, to enjoy their natural habitat.

(That last part there was for the squeamish of you. That may not have been exactly what happened).

Owning a home is awesome.

News: 4th Wall Grand Opening

Forgive me for my radio silence over the last week, but my workload has been rather impressive by its sheer abundance and ability to consume my soul. A couple more weeks like this and I may just have unburied myself from the massive To Do List that amassed over the summer.

It should be noted that the aforementioned To Do List has achieved sentience and engages me in conversation. Unsurprisingly, it's rather verbally abusive.

The item I wanted to mention today was the upcoming grand opening of the 4th Wall, here in Montreal. The 4th is the our comic shop, one that we've put our hearts into over the last couple of months and are finally ready to show it off in full.

The Grand Opening is taking place this Saturday (November 14th) from 11am to 6pm. In addition to being able to walk around the store, Lar and I will also be on hand to chat, sign or dance for you (as the monkeys that we are). Other festivities include raffles, special discounts and an assortment of fun.
