First LISSO/ALA Meeting of the New Year

The first joint LISSO/ALA meeting of the 2016-2017 Academic year will be Saturday, August 27 from 12:00-1:30 pm Eastern time.

The in-person meeting will be at William T. Young Library in the Keeneland Room.

UPDATE: We will have a live stream of the meeting for distance students to participate in, using the Zoom platform. To connect to the meeting, follow this link: https://uky.zoom.us/j/4594610891 . If you are asked for a meeting ID, it is 459-461-0891.

The main purpose of this meeting will be to brainstorm activities for the coming year and to get to know one another better. We will also have updates on Book Club and Pride Library Clean-up volunteering.

Meet the Officers- President Lauren Farmer

I’m Lauren Farmer and I am your LISSO President! I am embarking on my second year as a Reference Graduate Assistant at William T. Young Library. In this position I work at the reference desk on the second floor of Young. I will also be assisting the academic liaison to the history department with collection development and outreach. This Fall I will be completing a practicum in Information Literacy in which I will gain continued experience in instruction and assessment.

I attended UK for my undergraduate degree in Education. My senior year I was an intern in the Learning Lab at the Special Collections Research Center. This internship sparked my interest in pursuing librarianship as a career, as up to that point I had planned on becoming a high school Social Studies teacher. My current career goal is to work in an academic library in Reference and/or Information Literacy. You will often find me walking around campus looking at trees and saying hello to birds.

As LISSO President I want to do everything in my power to make your library school experience as fruitful as possible. I encourage you to participate in our events whenever you can, and never hesitate to approach me with any questions or concerns that you have. Meet the Officers- Vice President and Social Media Coordinator Megan Lucy

My name is Megan Lucy and I am the Vice President and Social Media Coordinator of LISSO for the 2016-2017 Academic year. This is my second year in the Master of Science in Library Science program, and I am working on the Information Systems academic track. So far my favorite class has been LIS 602: Information Representation and Access, because I really enjoyed building a thesaurus of fan fiction terms.

In Spring 2016, I participated in the Alternative Spring Break program in Washington, D.C. I worked in the Scholarly Communications and Information Technology department of the Smithsonian Libraries. This experience helped me to choose Information Systems as my academic track because I received firsthand experience working with information systems in a large academic library and saw how important they are to ensuring public access to information.

I am also a full time employee of the University of Kentucky. I work as an administrative assistant in the Dean’s Office in the College of Agriculture Food and Environment, managing faculty personnel files and the faculty personnel information database for the college. My plans after graduation are to pair this experience in university administration with my knowledge of library and information science to help universities find innovative ways to use information systems.

When I have free time (not often between school and work!) Megan likes to do arts and crafts. She particularly enjoys digital painting, embroidery and needle felting.

As LISSO Vice President, I am responsible for coordinating Book Club and volunteer work at the PCSO Pride Library in Lexington. As social media coordinator, I update this blog and the LISSO Facebook page.

Meet the Officers- Secretary Sarah Coblentz

Hi everyone, I’m Sarah Coblentz, the secretary for LISSO. I’m currently entering the second half of my first year in the MSLS program here at UK and work in the Special Collections Research Center as the graduate assistant. Currently in SCRC, I process donated collections from people and organizations that are relevant to the university, the state of Kentucky, and occasionally the US. I plan on focusing my MSLS path onto an archival and preservation one, I would love to work at NARA or the Smithsonian or any large archive (I’m a big history nerd if you couldn’t tell). I can’t wait to meet everyone over the course of this year!

Book Exchange and Holiday party!

Hi all,

I'm excited to announce that this year LISSO will be hosting a book exchange.

We encourage all students and (faculty are invited too) to sign up via Elfster. This book swap is optional, we have listed a spending cap of a maximum 15 dollars. However, this does not mean that you are required to spend 15 dollars-- used books are the best books, or feel free to exchange a book from your personal shelf. Depending on the location of who you draw, you can swap the book in person or snail mail!

Names will be drawn on Tuesday, November 17th and the book should be mailed to be received by December 18th.

November Updates and Upcoming LISSO events

Hi all LISSOers!

I hope you're having a wonderful November! I just scheduled for classes next semester and I'm pretty excited about taking Oral History. Yay.

We had a great time at Pick-It-Up and will put the funds earned to good use for ALA/LISSO stuff.

Here are some updates:

If you're local and interested we will be meeting on Saturday, 11/14 at 2:30 for a tour of the Central library! Maybe I'll pay my overdue fines while I'm there.

This month the theme for book club is GRAPHIC NOVELS! We will meet on at 7:00pm on December 3rd at Josie's in Chevy Chase for our meeting-- as always, you are welcome to post on the book club blog about what you a reading. It is fun, I swear!

We will meet once a week for the next four weeks and the UK Sustainability office will give us a little money for a party or guest speaker or cardigans or or or or

Newly Appointed Communication Managers & Book Club Reminder =^.^=

Since there were only two responses to the call for a Communication Manager, two people have been appointed. Here is some information about the lovely gals behind the LISSO pages!

Lauren Farmer attended UK as an undergraduate where she majored in History and Secondary Social Studies Education. She became interested in pursuing a career in librarianship during her internship with the Learning Lab at the Special Collections Research Center and has gone on to work as a Research Room assistant and accept a GA position in Reference at Young Library. She also enjoys teaching classes at Diana Evans School of Dance, bird-watching, and reading historical fiction. When asked to choose one word to define herself, she picked kind! She strives to be kind to everyone.

In honor of Lauren's bird-watching hobby, here is a link to the Cornell Lab Bird Cams! It's addicting...so watch out.

Natalie Bishop is a Lexington native and returned to Kentucky shortly after completing her business degree at Miami University in Oxford, OH. Her interest in libraries was first piqued by her job as a writing consultant at the Howe Writing Center at Miami, which was located in the main campus library. Currently, she works as a library intern at the Shaver Engineering Library here at UK and is enrolled in her first semester of the MLIS program. One word that she would use to describe herself is curious. She is constantly doing research on her various interests, which includes but is not limited to the most current presidential race, interior design, social justice issues, and psychology topics.

Natalie likes interior design..what do you think of the Babeliothèque East Side Gallery in Berlin? Are you "architained"?

Book Club and Kentucky Fried Zine Fest

LISSO will be meeting up at this year's Kentucky Fried Zine Fest, In a few days on Saturday, Sept. 19th, we will gather around noon at the Plantory-- which is near West Sixth Brewery. It's just a relaxed Saturday... checkin' out some Zines.

The results are in for book club meeting this month. Isn't it ever so novel?

We will meet up at Crank & Boom Ice Cream at 7:00 on Thursday, Sept. 24th.

Bake Sale Help Needed

Want to help out a SLIS student organization or get more involved?

The UK LISSO Student Chapter will be holding a bake sale to raise funds for programs and events. The bake sale will take place on Thursday, April 30th, 2015 from 2:30-5:00 in the lobby of the Lucille Little Fine Arts Library. This bake sale will take place before the UK ALA/LISSO Student Conference, so stop by, help out, and support your peers! We will also open it again after the conference if you stop by and want a snack!

BAKED GOODS

We need baked good donations! We would love cookies, brownies, rice krispie treats, cupcakes, cake pops, and layer bars. No cakes or pies, please. If you would like to donate baked goods, please drop them off at the SLIS office mailroom (Room 322,3^rd floor, Little Library Building) on Wednesday, April 29th from 9:00-2:00 or contact LISSO to make other arrangements. If you feel like an overachiever, we would love it if you could individually wrap your donated baked goods, if not we can take it on! April LISSO Meeting

The April meeting will be on the 7th from 8-9pm in the Little Library's Study Room 5!

We'll announce the officer elcetion results, plan the Spring Picnic, and work on getting some more exciting things together for you all!

So in the interest of officer election coming up, I would like to ask that if you are interested that you either fill out the interest form or send me an email. Elections are happening early so that new officers will have the month of April to work with those officers leaving before taking up their positions in May. Being a LISSO officer can be fun and look good on your resume. We are committed to serving our SLIS population to the best of our ability.

All of the positions are up for grabs this coming year so feel free to choose one or more of them to be on the ballot for: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Communications Manager, and Representatives. Descriptions are included on the Officer Interest form

On the 2nd we had our April meeting. We also had it available through Adobe Connect for those who were not available for the on campus meeting.

Our book for this month's book club is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. On April 26th there will be a brunch discussion over the book, and an Adobe Connect book discussion available too.
April 15th at 7 p.m. is our monthly pizza night at Pazzo's!
The mock Student Conference is on April 18th, and after the conference some of us will be going to Country Boy from 5-7 p.m.
Elections will be held soon for new officers. Details to come.
There was also talk for a May 3rd dinner (potluck) in honor of graduation. Details to come.

Febraury 2014

This month we will support ALA's Dine to Donate fundraiser at the Applebee's on Nicholasville Road on February 20th. It lasts the entire day, and make sure to bring the flyer to have them donate the 10% of your tab. A group of us may all go together for dinner, if people want.

On February 27th (a Thursday) we will have another night out at Pazzo's which always are a rousing success. It starts at 7 p.m. and we will use it as a temporary meeting, and plan for a meeting to follow in March.

Dec. 2013 LISSO Meeting

I (LeAnn, secretary) was sick this meeting however Daniel passed the information along.
In December it was tossed around to visit the Newport Aquarium however due to horrible weather, and finals week which has yet again appeared too suddenly, it has been postponed until next semester.
Tuesday night Dec. 17th at 7 p.m. we will have another one of our popular pizza nights at Pazzo's so don't feel shy, come on by for a quick visit or a long discussion. We always make room at the table (or booth)!
