Navigating the Changing Landscape of "The Classroom"

Event Description: What are the emerging trends in teaching and learning, and how do they enhance, complement, disrupt, dismantle, and/or strengthen our teaching? How do these trends affect student learning? How can we balance what we already do well with pedagogical initiatives that invite us to re-think and re-work teaching and learning? How do we cultivate a culture of change that leads to both student and faculty success? The Center for Faculty Enrichment (Cafe), the Digital Education Collaborative (DEC), and Greenwood Library invite you to join us for a day of interactive exploration of these questions. In addition to the keynote address and workshop, participants will choose from a variety of sessions focusing on the institute theme. The Institute is free for all Longwood faculty and staff, Hampden-Sydney College faculty, and University of Mary Washington faculty. The first 50 to register will receive a copy of Dr. Bowen’s book, Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology out of your College Classroom will Improve Student Learning. Dr. Jose Bowen, our keynote speaker, is Dean of the Meadows School of the Arts, and Algur H. Meadows Chair and Professor of Music, at Southern Methodist University. Bowen is a pioneer in active learning and the use of technology in the classroom, including podcasts and online games. He was nominated by both students and colleagues for teaching awards at Georgetown and he received a Stanford Centennial Award for Undergraduate Teaching. He is the author of the book, Teaching Naked: How Moving Technology out of your College Classroom will Improve Student Learning . In addition to his keynote address, Dr. Bowen will facilitate a workshop for all participants focusing on technologies to enhance student engagement and better student preparation, reading, and writing.
