LAS VEGAS — The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce Chairman Kristin McMillan is issuing the following statement applauding today’s passage of the “Jobs bill”, which will give businesses tax breaks for hiring the unemployed and give states more money for infrastructure projects.

McMillan says, ‘The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is pleased that the United States Senate passed the “Jobs Bill” today. Businesses are struggling, and this bill will help encourage job growth by giving tax breaks to businesses that hire the unemployed. This legislation also adds $20 billion into highway and mass transit programs that will both create jobs and invest in the infrastructure we need.

‘The Chamber appreciates the leadership of Senator Harry Reid and Republican and Democrat lawmakers working together in a bi-partisan manner to enact this bill that will help businesses put people back to work, as well as invest in our nation’s infrastructure. We urge the U.S. House of Representatives to quickly pass this bill in order for businesses to be able to take advantage of these incentives as soon as possible.”

Nevada’s 2010 Census: Why the count matters to you

Few states have changed as much over the past 10 years as Nevada. That’s why statewide participation in the 2010 Nevada Census is absolutely vital to ensuring Nevadans are accurately tallied – to make sure we get our state’s fair share of government funding for much-needed public and governmental services, as well as for accurate representation at the legislative level.

Why should you and your employees care about Census participation? Consider this information from the Census Bureau:

Every 10 years, the United States Congress is reapportioned to give each state the representation it deserves, based on population. According to multiple independent analyses, Nevada stands at the threshold of receiving a fourth Congressional seat -- and by extension, a sixth Electoral Vote -- as a direct result of the 2010 Census.
The 2010 Census will bring more than 4,800 jobs to the state during peak operations in May/June 2010. These are good paying, flexible jobs, as field enumerators start at $14.50 per hour. You can call the Census Jobs Hotline at 866-861-2010.
The Census will bring much-needed federal funding to government services in Nevada. A recent analysis by the Nevada State Data Center, Legislative Counsel Bureau, and State Demographer, looked at all of the federal funding passed through to state and local governments, much of which is allocated on a per capita basis, based on the Census headcount. That analysis found that every man, woman, and child missed by the Census represents $917 in lost funding per person, every year for 10 years: that’s $9,170 per person over 10 years.
An accurate Census tally will help ensure Nevada receives its fair share of federal funding for everything from transportation infrastructure to quality of life projects. This in turn will help promote Nevada as a business and family-friendly city, encouraging economic investment and diversification.

Request for Proposal:

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is seeking proposals for mobile marketing services including but not limited to:

• mobile communication via text messaging

• mobile advertising

• mobile websites

• campaign management platform

• short codes and key words

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce is looking to realize the full potential of marketing to its members via mobile devices. In addition, it is looking for ways to assist its members in entering the arena of mobile marketing in a cost effective way.

Requirements:

• Must be a Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce member in good standing

• Must be able to provide key words for use in responding to the Chamber.

• Must be able to host a mobile website.

• Must be able to provide an online portal to enable the Chamber to manage communication easily.

• Must be willing to offer discounted pricing to Chamber members for mobile marketing services.

• Must be able to coordinate, provide and host proprietary short code.

• Must be able to adequately secure membership database information.

• Must be able to demonstrate positive financial return to the Chamber.

Attention Chamber Members:

Starting this month, Clark County Commissioners and Las Vegas City Council Members will be holding town hall meetings to hear public input on budget priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. This is your opportunity as a taxpayer and voter to send a strong message to each of your elected officials about what is important to you, your family and the success of your business.

We have heard from many of you that you or others you know have had to decrease wages and benefits, reduce your workforce, or have been forced to make other drastic business decisions in light of the ongoing economic challenges. The town hall meetings are a good opportunity for you to share the benefit of your experience as a business person and concerns as a constituent with your elected officials on how you think your taxpayer dollars are best spent in our community. You are encouraged to attend and take the City of Las Vegas online survey.

Below are links to information, dates and locations for the town hall meetings to be held by each of the County Commissioners and each of the Las Vegas City Council members. The meetings will be held in each Commission District and Council Ward, and the public is invited to attend to assist our elected officials in determining community priorities during these difficult times. This is your chance to see local government at work and to participate in the process.
