Dropping Season 2 in summer 09, the gang is back with more elaborate scams designed to exact revenge against those who use power and wealth to victimize people. Hutton stars as Nate Ford, a former insurance investigator determined to bring down the kind of corrupt bigwigs whose neglect led to the death of his son. Avoid heat tools. Your hair is already fried from sun, pollution, wind and chlorine. Instead, apply a leave-in conditioner to damp hair and scrunch hair to bring out natural waves. You can gently twist hair around your finger to style. Apply a volumizer to roots to give hair some lift and style. You want to avoid brushes. Use your fingers for a natural look. web-leeave-in.jpg Leave-in Conditioner 2. To keep hair protected, apply a leave-in conditioner to hair before going into chlorine or the ocean. 3. Braid hair when it's damp and leave in until the sun dries it. Use a leave-in conditioner to soften the hair. Then unwind the braids for perfect waves. Use bigger braids for bigger waves and smaller braids for smaller waves. Another trick is to do one braid along the part (you can do a sideways part or a middle part) and that will give you some lift. You can also do a sexier look by braiding the front "bangs". Simply braid along the forehead line and you can create a Veronica Lake wave in no time. web-volume.jpg Volumizer 4. Loose buns are a staple. The trick at getting it to look polished and beachy and not workout ready is to get some height at the crown of your head. Use a volumizer and tease gently at the root. Smooth the front with fingers (no brush) and pull into a low bun. Wind around and secure with bobbie pins that match your hair color. It looks more pulled together and there are plenty of brands that offer various shades to match red, black, brunette and blonde hair. 5. If your hair is stick straight and won't get the beachy waves you want, go with it. Smooth hair with a leave-in conditioner to minimize frizz and brush smooth and pull into a tight low ponytail. It's modern and clean. I am definitely putting the the strong and sexy Misha heels on my wish list. I love the tan cotton contrast piping around the red suede. Gorgeous! These could almost be tango shoes. Sometimes I feel that thin stiletto heels will break off at the most unfortunate situations, but these heels will last a long time.
Why is this line so scorchingly hot and popular? Chie Mihara has created designs that are about feminine style. She also believes that a shoe line won't be successful unless it's really comfortable to wear. Chie makes sure that she has plenty of cushioning in the footbed and she thinks about the feel of the shoe on the foot, allowing room for toes to wiggle and still be sexy. Another factoid to add into the mix is that this line is hand-made and there isn't a ton of the shoes running around so you won't see yourself coming and going on other people. Consider this a "cult" line and it's cult-like following is growing by the minute -- I am forever talking about it. I should just learn to shut my mouth and buy the shoes instead. However then you wouldn't know about the line plus if you saw me wear them, you would ask me about them anyway. Consider this a forewarning-- this line is highly addictive in boots, sandals (of which I saw at least 3 pairs I would love to add to my collection in both boots and sandals). I got a bead on this line and while Tami featured other styles, I went in an entirely different direction and here are a few of my picks: web-atom.jpg Atom Embellished Pump alien boot.jpg Alien Boot When I see a line I consider quite unusual, I usually have a real lust fest and here are a few more that I found-- haven't found a store that's carrying them but these are so on my wish list-- and I better wish for a sugar daddy to buy them for me. (pretty please with sugar on top!) ALLEGRA_1[1].jpg Allegra in a ostrich-embossed leather -- there are three colors in the collection. AMUSE[1].jpg Amuse (which has serious lust going for it) AMIRA[1].jpg Amira, a nifty t-strap pump done in croc-embossed leather. This isn't the only post you will see about Chie Mihara and her fabulous shoe line. There's a lot more coming in the pipeline. They have a video series called JCTV and now they have turned their eye on LA-- and picked an unusual array of people to interview : a fashionista, a stylist and noted (and fabulous) shoe designer Jerome Rousseau. web-jc-report-logo.jpg What they have to say about Los Angeles is interesting. Jason Campbell interviews Rousseau which is smart but why not the others? Particularly "la fashionista" who seemed to riff her comments without giving much thought to them. Perhaps she felt that she could extemporize well enough -- however she comes off as less fashionista (and more about labels looking at her top) and more of a dim bulb. Here are the three videos: JCTV Asks: What's The Most Stylish Thing About Los Angeles? Jerome Rousseau whose shoes everyone should covet. A nameless fashionista whose answer makes it evident why she is nameless, She didn't take the time to say something cogent or intelligent. It gives LA a bad name. A stylist is interesting, just wish the sound had been better. I took the time to watch the videos before jumping on my LA-lovin soap box and here's my reply.
So. California and LA definitely has its' own vibe and sense of fashion & style. It's part of the culture. While celebrities are part of the landscape, they aren't the sole essence of style-- though the events held here are used as style markers. As a fashion editor (print and online) and a stylist for photo shoots as well as a blogger, I see the California style and there is distinct difference in LA vs NYC though that's not to say that we are sloppy.. If you don't think Kevan Hall, Rodarte, Pamela Roland, Dolan and some other brands whether it's clothing or accessories have a distinctive style, voice and presentation -- then you haven't walked around or looked at what's cooking here in LA. One only has to look at the denim brands like Rich & Skinny, Denim of Virtue, Freedom of Choice as well as swimwear/surf brands (VIX, Hurley, Quiksilver) as well as Vans & Toms to get it down.
There was a lot more I would have/ should have said but then again, maybe not. I am highly prejudiced. I love LA. I love NYC. I love the vibe of San Francisco (that's not a giant leap based on recent posts). I find the fashion is about location as much as it is about what goes down the runways. I do think that Washington DC could use a bit of color and style to dust off the stuffiness-- but then again, that's my take. What do you think about Los Angeles and Southern California? Scarad 27 It's the single-most most unique web series ever produced; a sci-fi musical comedy starring all your sci-fi favorites in brand new roles - and singing and dancing as well. Think Hitchhikers Guide meets Flight of the Conchords, and you're halfway there.
Ok.. if you have seen anything with Hayden Black or listened to my podcasts and videos with Hayden, then you have to know it's going to be insanely funny because he is both deft with his writing and extremely ahead of the curve. Plus this ship is part "Happy Days", part "Back to the Future", and definitely everything he says above-- plus singing!! Who's not going to find this hilarious. Now let's see who sings and how well. He was only there Saturday and Sunday and he was quite good as you can tell and he was using the usual instruments and also pots as his musical tools. It's a slice of San Francisco that you might not see if you took the typical tourist route. The caveat about flying is for those leaving out of SFO and trying to take carry-ons. While I had packed all my cosmetics and checked them, some smaller items and paritcularly the Rechiutti chocolates I had purchased were packed into a bag I was trying to carry on. Little did I know that chocolate was going to cause a problem. The TSA people pulled me aside and unpacked the bag (lovely!-- not!) because chocolate and the Burnt Caramel Sauce (where were clearly visible as just being the products that they were) were considered to be "gels" and gels were treated as potential problem items. I was offered three choices: 1) eat the chocolates immediately 2) dump the $45.00 of sweets 3) check the bag- which meant returning to the counter. Which do you think I did? Rather than dump the Rechiutti which would have blown a serious dent in my mood and personal chocolate stash, I went back to counter and checked the bag. Luckily we had lots of time because 1) we had gotten there early and 2) our flight was really delayed (by more than an hour) so it wasn't so much of a hassle. My reasoning for packing them as carry-on was because I didn't want them to melt or be exposed to the unseasonable heat that was still occurring and I wanted them to stay at a reasonable temperature. My concern was well-founded when we landed in Orange County and found it 93 degrees at the airport and across the OC/LA county. So be aware that no matter where you are, that chocolate is considered to be a potentially hazardous substance if you have purchased a number of items. Pack it into checked luggage if you haven't purchased after passing through the TSA security people. While it did give me pause and made me really wonder what the heck was going on that chocolate could be considered a dangerous substance, it won't stop me from returning to San Francisco! She gets a lot of "air time" at the Hotel Cafe because of her truly unique sound and it's reflected on her current EP/CD,'Waiting on the Nine" which has a distinctly different sound than what I have currently been hearing for the last year or so in musicians. Featuring bluesy, jazz-infused arrangements, her voice wraps lusciously around the lyrics and bends them to the music and her will and makes them entirely her own and you find that you are drawn into her world and seeing life through her eyes. black-and-white.jpg Lelia Broussard Her first song out of the gate is interesting (Scared to Feel) opens slowly as an invitation to explore and connect and it develops over the course of the song. Each subsequent song shows off a different aspect of Broussard's performance personality and she's quite diverse with a soft yet distinct edge and unique phrasing that reflects the era of Ella, Billie and Dinah (Fitzgerald, Holiday, Washington in case you didn't know). For those looking for a more current reference, think of Corinne Bailey Rae but so much better, deeper, thoughtful with a greater range. Her voice goes from silky smooth to a softened Janice Joplin-esque purr and growl throughout the CD. Produced by Dave Trumfio, Broussard has great backup from musicians like Jason Borger, Rob Douglas, Derek Brown, Stirling Trent and Keaton Simons (thought there was something familiar about the guitar-work!). This small sampler of music gives you a wide range of "tastes" or flavors of her musical presentation and she's definitely someone to be watching and listening too. The most contemporary radio framed song is track 2, "Don't Let Go", which is slow opening up but rapidly picks up tempo as she moves towards the end. It's all about relationships and allowing oneself to be rely on another person as well as being ther too. It's a perfect song for the radio that would pick up the pop listener. performing by david sobel.jpg Every other song on this 6 track EP illustrates a different musical & singing quality that is uniquely Lelia and she's nailed it on the title track, "Waiting on the Nine". This serious blues-inflected piece is about where we all are-- "waiting on the nine" , waiting to get on with our lives, to get past the pain, to get "somewhere". Lelia's unique phrasing style makes this a perfect song that will haunt you because you can hear the echoes of other great singers from decades past in her styling yet it's very much Broussard's personality particularly in the bridge section. Just when you think it's over, it comes back for a softer refrain that's really different. Great song and you need to have this CD just to have this one . Hotel Cafe Invite Waitin on the 9
An acoustic version of Waiting on the Nine The next song is again another pop-infused and could be easily a favorite on the radio, " I'm Not Waiting". It's almost anthemic in the way she talks about not letting her life slip by because of relationship and the need to move on to get her life going. It's a great song and is thoughtful in its lyrics despite its very upbeat presentation. if you are in a quandary about what you are doing or where you are going in your life, check out this song. Jazz-based "So Far By Far" is really incredible in it's presentation. The lush vocals reflect an emotional depth that only comes from a relationship that is almost addictive in its power. She craves the man as much as she craves the crowd and the phrasing of that line is the icing on the cake of this gorgeously produced song. Powerful, emotional and it will suck you in and leave you almost drowning in her voice. " Grass is Greener" a fun, uptempo, almost gritty song that really talks about life the way it is and with a wink to boot. She's got it all put together and her phrasing is terrific. This is a great way to end the EP and sticks in your head. Danceable yet cautionary tale about the addictive quality of "chemistry" between the sexes-- because you just had a taste and how you can torpedo relationships because of that addiction. Lelia Medley

Broussard has a powerful voice that is flexible in its presentation and unique in it's ability to be many things in a variety of genre's this is one musician you need to follow -- because she's going to get a whole lot better over time. I had heard much about this Art of Hair Ceremony but never thought I would ever experience it. Gleefully I waited for the day. SHU-AOH-logo.jpg What was so amazing was the location was perfect-- downtown Manhattan Beach on a gloriously sunny day. Hush Up is upstairs above the traffic of the street with a patio and view of the ocean. Ric Arrigoni spent a lot of time creating a soothing ambiance that is in tune with the zen of the Japanese brand of Shu Uemura. The view inside is even more amazing. The area where the Art of Hair Ceremony is performed is both insanely beautiful and amazingly high tech. The chairs are NASA-like in their high tech abilities. (Can someone just send one to me for my office? I could sleep in it too) hushup9lores.gif The Room for the Art of Hair Ceremony The treatment provides you with a great kimono and then you sit down and they cover you with a blanket to keep you cozy and relaxed. I was offered tea and I took that because it was akin to the Japanese tea ceremony. After the tea, I was given the choice of watching a tv screen of swimming fish or eye masque. (I take the masque every time!). The ceremony includes giving you an Ipod with soothing music to listen to via waterproof earbuds and off to lala land you go. The chair is elongates and goes backwards electronically so that your head is fully supported the entire time. (Just thinking about this is "zoning me out"). hushup8loers.gif Here's the client's view from the chair. Amazing ! The ceremony is a complex ritual of cleansing, moisturizing and conditioning followed by a special blend treatment of DepSea with an Absolu Oil (mine was Plenish because I have of all the damage I do to my hair-- color, blow dry & flat iron. Not a lot of any one thing but add them all up together and you have problems!). This is left on and I was givien the most divine scalp massage that put me into a state of bliss. Rinsing it out was sort of a slow re-emergence into reality. hushup7.gif The Hush Up Styling area Then I went to Kelly who did an amazing job of styling my hair including giving me tips on how to blow out my hair straight and then also how to use the flat iron-- and I use her tips now religiously. She was awesome!! (thanks to her, my straight hair didn't have a flat iron touch it for 10 days. I just blew out the ends a bit with a brush thanks to the amazing Shu Uemura styling products). video interview with Ric Arrigoni, owner of HUSH salons and the Hush Up Hair Spa.
