Anybody want to let me interview them about writing from their job?

(I'll probably be asking around at today's meeting about this too.)

I'm taking a required course called "Technical Writing" (though I would call it "Business Writing"), and for one of the assignments, I must interview someone in my field of study about the writing they do in the course of their employment. (I'm talking about the really boring things like letters and memos and some emails, though newer forms of communication/documentation might work too.) So I'm looking for someone who codes or designs or is a sysadmin who might have a reasonbly sized body of work of this sort.

The requirements would be to answer some questions related to the writing you do on the job, with a few basic ones as exposition, for about 25-35 minutes, and also to provide three actual documents you have written that are representative of what you normally write. They don't have to be the greatest in the world; they don't even have to be the least bit interesting. Obviously, however, if it is a concern, no information that should remain private/confidential should show up in the documents.

Preferably, this should be done within the week, but if no one is able to meet that timeframe, I certainly understand.

Thank you in advance.

Tabletop RPGs?

I used to play a lot of tabletop RPGs as a kid - AD&D, GURPS, even Vampire. Then I stopped. For, like, 12 years.

Then about a month ago I got the itch, went out and bought a D&D 4th Edition (the newest) Player's Handbook, went to a comic book shop out in Kenner, and played D&D with some people. I had limited time but it was super super super rad and I had a great time. Then I found out that they're not doing that anymore. Lame!

So now I'm back in my old situation in which I don't know ANYone that's into RPGs. Is anyone on this forum into that? Any games already going? I'd be willing to learn a new rule set and everything. The only thing is that I'm not into live-action role playing. Other than that I'm down with pretty much anything.

I'd also be interested in some tabletop war gaming like Warhammer, which I only played once when I was in 9th grade and thought it was pretty frickin' awesome.

Hey!

This coming Friday marks the third of July, which means it's time for another meeting. I've had a really cool idea for a meeting that I've been consistently having trouble arranging so I'm open to ideas for this month's if you've got something cool.

If not, last month's was similarly unfocused and was still a good time, so I hope to you ya'll there

Same as ever 6PM at Z'otz

BUG

Folks may already know all about this but I thought it looks pretty cool!

http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/electronic/bdbd/

BUG is a set of tools that lets you create personalized gadgets and devices. It's open-source and modular, letting you literally snap together the device you need. Backed by a community of enthusiastic developers, BUG development continues to grow more exciting and diverse.

Because BUG is open-source, it doesn't impede your creativity. If you've got an idea for a gadget, it's easy to throw it together. For example, your garden is being chomped on by some unseen entity. Snap a motion-detector and a camera onto the BUGbase, write some Java, and you've got gadget that'll catch the family of deer that roams through your yard. Unhappy with Google maps street view? Snap on the GPS module and the camera, and code your BUG to take geotagged photos at specific intervals and roll your own. Got an RC helicopter? Snap on the vonHippel breakout-board module and the touch-screen module and code an interface to fly your helicopter on your BUG. Are you a cartographer? Snap the GPS and the touch-screen modules on, a smidgen of Java, walk to the corners of your property, and bang zoom, you've got a map.

-Projects Sub forum

make me a temporary admin and I'll do all this through the weekend, and help manage spam/disrespectful/retarded posts

The next week wouldn't really work either, since a bunch of members are travelling to Alabama to check out their hacker space (details here).
Unfortunately I was in a rush and couldn't look at it too closely or get the model number, but there was a big fat laptop that I would estimate to be pre or early pentium era at the Thrift City on the westbank going for 9 bucks or so. I believe no CD drive, white in color, a few keys missing unfortunately. I know I'm not the only one who appreciates obsolete tech so I thought I'd pass it along. Unfortunately I've gone a little overboard with spending recently so this is a "don't buy stupid things" week for me.
