The 26-year-old elementary school teacher has booked a renovated dairy barn in Fort Mill, S.C., for the ceremony, so the rustic attire seemed fitting. Yellow and blue are the colors of Fort Mill High School, where Case and her fiance met.

Case isn’t sure how many bridesmaids she’ll have – her guess is three or four – but she wants them to have a say in what style of dress she chooses for them to wear. “I want my bridesmaids to look and feel confident,” she said Sunday at a bridal showcase at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont.

After last spring’s British royal wedding, the bridal industry was watching for a possible “Pippa Middleton effect” after Kate Middleton’s sister turned heads in a show-stopper of a gown. Website fashionista.com declared Pippa’s ivory satin-based crepe column dress with cowl neck and cap sleeves “the first bridesmaid dress that anyone ever wanted to knock off.” In response, bridal boutiques, including many in the Carolinas, rush-ordered replica Pippa dresses.

But the replica dresses didn’t sell. What store owners learned, they say, is that brides want to set their own trends on their big day. Individualism, a strong trend in the past few seasons, seems to trump the celebrity wedding effect.

While mom or grandma might have their own ideas about what is appropriate attire for bridesmaids, brides today don’t worry much about adhering to rules.

“I joke and say ‘All the rules went out the window 10 years ago,’ ” says Anna Kelly, senior consultant for J Major’s bridal boutique in Charlotte. “It used to be that you asked, ‘What time is the wedding?’ ” and that dictated the attire. “But it just doesn’t matter anymore. People wear very simple, svelte skinny dresses in an enormous Catholic Mass, and fully beaded ball gowns on the beach.”

Oddly, a great example of the trend can be found – as you could have guessed – in a celebrity wedding. Last September the seven bridesmaids for model/actress Molly Sims donned what Sims called “cohesive yet mismatched” gowns by designer Elizabeth Kennedy in shades of tan and black. Each of the dresses was different – some with prints, some solids.

The bottom line is it’s almost anything goes when it comes to bridal party fashion. Bridesmaids are no longer limited to the floor-length jewel-toned satin gowns with matching hairdos, shoes and jewelry of yesteryear.

“Brides are taking the reins over their own weddings and are not abiding by what tradition says they should be doing,” says Carrie Goldberg, assistant fashion editor for Martha Stewart Weddings magazine. “The one rule is that every bridesmaid should be in a dress that flatters them and that they like.”

And if that means bridesmaids aren’t all in the same dress? That’s just fine, Goldberg says.

“I think the idea of everyone wearing the same dress is on its way out,” she says. “There’s more of a focus on working with a palate than working with the same color. Not every color flatters every girl in the bridal party.”

Suiting themselves

At the Bridal Boutique of North Carolina in Cary, manager Manu Gujral said the store stocked the Kate Middleton replica dress immediately after the wedding, but “nobody is even asking” for it, nor are they coming in with photos of Pippa’s gown.

Gujral says the brides she helps still most often put their bridesmaids in identical dresses, but they are often shorter dresses, with flowy fabric. “Basically, (brides) will bring in a couple of bridesmaids and see what looks good on them. … Then the bride chooses whatever she likes.”

Still, buyer Lucie Winters of A Bridal World in Raleigh said that while there are “no major no-nos” brides need to heed when picking out attendants’ attire, there are following several hot trends.

Shorter dresses are big now for bridesmaids – “short has exploded,” she says – and more brides are letting their attendants pick out their own dress style, so long as they stay within the same designer and color scheme. Dresses with pockets are also popular.

But for all the democracy a bride may want to offer her attendants, Vicki Jeffries of the Gastonia boutique Poffie Girls reminds us that there is still one simple rule: Bridesmaids should never outshine – or overrule – the bride.

“She is the center of attention and they are her court.”

The adage “Everything old is new again” is especially true of wedding trends this summer.

“I think we’re going to see a lot of bold, saturated colors as much as we will the traditional whites and creams,” said celebrity wedding planner David Tutera. Tutera, the popular host of We TV’s “My Fair Wedding,” will be the featured guest at today’s Formal Affair wedding and event expo in the Chattanooga Convention Center. He will answer questions from expo guests and present a program on wedding planning at 3:30 p.m.

More than 160 bridal-industry vendors will be waiting to meet brides-to-be at the expo. This one-stop shopping can save time and money by eliminating trips around town to sample cakes, hear music and consult with photographers.

One couple will walk away with a honeymoon trip to Cancun.

Here’s a look at five trends to which retailers predict brides will say “I do” this summer.

Vintage jewelry bouquets

Miranda Lambert introduced this look at her ceremony to Blake Shelton. Instead of a cluster of flowers, a circular orb of fabric is entirely covered with glittering brooches so the bouquet blooms with color.

However, such a bouquet can be pricey, whether using gemstone or fashion jewelry, and not many brides-to-be have the budget of a country music star. Gil Cartwright, of Flowers by Gil Curt on Tremont Street, said he is seeing a more subdued version of this vintage look in local bouquets.

“Some brides add their grandmother’s brooch to the bouquet, or if they have a particular piece that means a lot to them, we’ll put that in the bouquet,” Cartwright said.

Peonies are the flower of the season. Cartwright said hydrangeas and “roses that look antique,” such as David Austin roses, also are hot choices.

Cartwright cautions brides-to-be to reconsider the choice of a red rose bouquet with their all-white gown.

“It looks like a target in front of the dress.”

Return of the ball gown

Emily Goodin, owner of Boutique Couture on Market Street, said the full-skirted ball gown is staging a comeback.

However, the fit-and-flare gown remains popular, Goodin said, with ruffles or feather embellishments for textured interest at the bottom of the gown.

An emerging trend for brides and bridesmaids: illusion necklines (sheer fabric overlaying a strapless or low-cut bodice.) Fans of “Gossip Girl” just saw this style on Blake Lively’s character, Serena, during Blair Waldorf’s wedding episodes.

Cupcakes

While the bridal cake remains the focal point of a reception, cupcakes continue to gain popularity with brides-to-be.

Mike Irwin, owner of Gigi’s Cupcakes locations on Gunbarrel Road and Highway 153, said cupcake towers are giving way to the trend of “themed designs.”

“We had a customer recently use old-fashioned wash buckets in a country theme wedding. We turned them upside down, set them in tiers and used them as stands for cupcakes,” he said.

More brides also are replacing groom’s cakes with platters of cupcakes.

“We’ve done camouflage to Tennessee/Alabama-themed cupcakes,” he said.

Irwin said cupcakes are easily customized. Icing can be tinted to match the color of bridesmaids’ gowns or reception decor.

Location, location

Local industry vendors say more ceremonies are moving out of churches to destinations ranging from local inns to Florida beaches. Cartwright said he recently decorated a yacht with 500 gardenias for a ceremony.

One reason for this, they believe, is that a destination wedding provides a neutral site for couples of different faiths to marry.

Tropical honeymoons

“We do a lot of honeymoon cruises and all-inclusive vacations in the Caribbean,” said Chris McSpadden, owner of Travel by Air, Land and Sea on Lee Parkway Drive, of hot honeymoon destinations.

“The economy has kept travel a bit slow, but cruises have remained pretty steady. We’re even seeing some growth in cruising because pricing has come down,” she said.

Celebrity wedding planner David Tutera will make a stop in Chattanooga this weekend as part of the 2012 Formal Affair bridal show on Sunday.

Tutera is host of WE TV’s (Women’s Entertainment Television) “My Fair Wedding,” a series that takes everyday brides-to-be and creates their fairy tale weddings in a short period of time. 

At age 19, Tutera opened his first events planning business with just one client. Today, the style-maker said he still loves his job, which ranges from planning parties for celebrities, designing weddings and events all over the world and lecturing on the art of creating a stylish event.

Nooga (N): What will you be doing at the bridal show in Chattanooga this weekend?

David Tutera (DT): This will be a sort of a collaboration of many things. I will be speaking to the brides-to-be … and really talking about the various plans to begin that process to walk down the aisle. A lot of times when I am speaking they really want to hear the inside and outside of the show. So there will be that. But it is all meant to be inspirational and informative on how to create a wedding on a budget.

(N): What do you see as some of the hottest trends coming out for brides now?

(DT): The hottest trends that I am predicting for 2012 and 2013 are bold statements of color.  We’ll be seeing reds, plums, burgundys and purples. Everyone is straying away from traditional whites. And to me that makes a bigger statement. The bolder the color, the stronger statement. Color can be done in a lot of ways without having to find ways to go over the top. Linens, flowers, fashion and lighting are four of the key components to create color. You can do it inexpensively and make a stronger statement. Also, brides want to know, “How do I make my wedding unique?” Adding personality and finding a way to tell a story of the bride and groom is one way. What are the couple’s favorite colors, or food, or incorporating something about how they met. Infusing these details is a way to make it more interactive for the guests and make your wedding that much more unique.

(N): What is the best advice you can give a bride today?

(DT): To not think so big. They see what we do on TV and what the celebrities are executing. Thinking big is setting up for failure. That means a larger budget. Budgets for weddings are decreasing this year all across the country. You have to really take your budget and spread it among all the pieces of the puzzle. You may have to relook at the budget and sacrifice some of the guest list to get what you want. The trouble is, what happens is they get the ring on their finger and then lose the sense of realism. You know you just can’t have everything.

(N): What are things to avoid?

(DT): The first thing is, when you get engaged, do not jump online and order every trinket you see. Avoid impulse purchases on the front end because you will need that money later. Also, avoid the large guest counts. And avoid the safe zone. Be bold and make a wedding that people will remember.

(N): What is the worst nightmare wedding you have been involved with on the show?

(DT): The list is endless. You have to remember, on the show, they are casting brides that have stories that are meant to turn heads on television, but they are real. This year I had a bride with a Goth theme. She was infatuated with Goth and death. That was a tough one for me. I also had a wedding with the theme “under the sea,” which is a cute birthday party for a 6-year-old, but a wedding? But if that is what the bride wants, then I have to find a way to keep her concept and try to make it more appropriate and sophisticated for a wedding. Eighty percent of the time, these brides are picking concepts that are good for a kid’s birthday party. And they are dedicated to their concepts.

The groom-to-be Hallyu star, Go Soo will be getting married on February 17 with some top-notch celebrities in the wedding program. However, his wedding invitations were revealed and puzzled netizens due to it’s plain and normal appearance.

Unlike other top star’s wedding invitations, Go Soo’s invitations did not even have a photo of the couple or any elaborate designs or fonts. It just said, “We have become one in heart and chose to vow our love to one another. Please join us and bless us in this celebration.”

It is reported that Go Soo did not even talk about wedding plans with his manager. He just prepared for the wedding with a wedding planner. His wedding invitation, just like his personality, was short, simple and cut to the chase with no excessive glamor.

It is also reported that Go Soo personally called each and every guest of the wedding to greet and invite them, on top of sending out the invitations. Guests were pleased to see a modest and humble image of Go Soo, as he asked them to bless him and his bride-to-be.

Country singer Wynonna Judd will shun a big Hollywood wedding when she marries her fiance later this year, insisting she’s opting for a “simple and sweet” ceremony.

Judd’s musician partner Cactus Moser proposed to the singer on Christmas Eve after two years of dating.

The couple is planning to exchange nuptials in the autumn because “it’s not a sweaty time for brides” and Judd reveals they’re planning to keep the wedding small as she’s bored of dressing up for glitzy bashes.

She tells People.com, “I’ve been to so many events and done so many push-up bras and sparkles and hairspray. I just want to be free and have fun. So I don’t know. Something simple and sweet.

“It’s time for me to stop the car, take out the map and see where I’m headed. So I’m just gonna live and enjoy every day being engaged and getting married.”

Vicky continues: “Clues will be placed all over the house – the audience can use their time to explore each room and try to locate various snippets of information and physical clues to piece together the real story of Valentino’s murder. There might even be the opportunity to take the audience to areas of the house that aren’t usually open to the public…”

The youngest of the Kardashian sisters, Khloé was the first to the altar after marrying basketball star Lamar Odom in 2009. It was a whirlwind 30-day courtship followed by a flashy Hollywood wedding, and they have since have had their every move filmed for their reality show Khloé Lamar, which is about to start its second season.

Although the reality couple seem like they have everything, the one thing they are missing is a baby, and there has been much speculation as to why the young couple have not yet added to the Kardashian clan.

In a trailer for the new series of their reality show, Khloé is seen discussing her sister Kourtney’s second pregnancy with Lamar and asks him if he is jealous, to which he replies: “Yeah, they get to have another baby and I don’t.”

During an appearance this morning on NBC’s Today show, Khloé discusses the clip and her upset at not yet being able to get pregnant.

The reality star said: “It’s always on the plan for Lamar and I to start a family, but when I heard that (comment) it really broke my heart because I didn’t think he felt that way.

“We definitely want kids but we really are just like when it happens it happens.”

Khloé added: “There are so many rumours out there that I’m doing all these fertility treatments. Yesterday I actually got sent all these bouquets of flowers – which was so sweet – to my condo in Dallas and then I read the card and it’s from three different fertility treatments saying, ‘I hope you try us out!’”

Last month the reality star dismissed rumours that she was looking into fertility treatments, taking to Twitter to tell the world that her and Lamar are currently trying to get pregnant “the old-fashioned way.”

Khloé moved to Texas with her basketball star husband when he was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Dallas Mavericks last year.
