Queridos Padres & Estudiantes,

I can't stop thanking each and every one of you for your great support during these first two weeks of distance learning. You are incredible!

Because the spring break begins on Friday, April 3, and by disposition of the Head of School, next week Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will be Distance Learning Days. Thursday is going to be Filling-Thinking Thursday, where your child(ren) can catch up on unfinished assignments and spend time on their Passion Project

I apologize for the change of plans, so you will receive Monday's schedule and I will transfer the catch-up day to Thursday.

I want to highlight 3 great achievements.

You are speaking a lot of Spanish in many ways at home. ¡Bravo!
You are working hard, more and more tasks are well done and submitted. ¡Gracias!
You are working every day and I can see it. :)

Continue to focus on these 3 points:

1. Follow the schedule: it doesn't matter what time you start, just go through it every day.

2. Stay Connected: Sign in to Seesaw for information and carefully read the announcements or assignments or student work.

3. Keep asking questions: record them and if possible take photos of the paper that you need help with.

Finally, I want to encourage you Tesoros to attend the meeting at ZOOM.com on Monday at 11:00am in the morning for student numbers from 1-10, and student numbers from 11-20 at 11:30am. I think we can have more interaction with smaller groups. :) I will send you the invitation as soon as possible. I can't wait to see your smiles and hear everything you have done so far.

Queridos Padres,

As part of the ZCS family we are all responsible for playing our part in maintaining the health and well-being of our beloved community. Please remember that our decisions and behaviors affect everyone around us. Thank you for your responsibility as a child of God and a good citizen. Today more than ever we are called to exercise the ministry of peace.

Thank you so much to our amazing room-mon Erin Bremmer, who always steps forward and takes care of every detail, you are a blessing to all of us.

Following the alternative learning plan for my beloved students I want to let you know that I have sent a large number of resources home. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns that arise. Everyone is called to do their best without any pressure at all.

Finally, I will record some cue lessons on Seesaw, and I will do a Facebook live every Wednesday morning at 10am on our Classroom Page. The 'live' FB is certainly NOT mandatory and will just be an opportunity to teach the kids in a 'live' format. All of the videos will be recorded and placed on the classroom page for later viewing.

This Week:
Bible Memory Verse: Romans 8:31-32 Due Date: March 17 (quiz they have taken home.)
Bible: We will learn about Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection this week! These lessons are the foundation of our faith and there is so much to learn and discover! Our goal is to bring these stories to life even more this week and to help the students fall more in love with our selfless Creator God. (folder they have taken home.)
Literature Selection: Any of the books you've brought home.
Phonics: Syllable classification: sílabas tónicas (agudas y llanas)
Word Wall Words: después, interés, jamás, casi, nunca.
Poem: Comelones
Reading: During this week we will focus on using all the components of Non Fiction books to help students use these features to get information from a text and apply it to their writings. (Raz-Kids)
Writing: It is time to move on to investigating the content of our chapters. Students will look for more information in other books and from their friends.

And they will also do it at home, thanks in advance for all the support you offer to your child.
Math: Most of them did great on their test. Now we are adding larger numbers this week and will really focus on why we carry (or regroup). Students will work on explanations and proof drawings to demonstrate deeper understanding. (papers they have taken home.)
Social Studies: We have already begun our lesson on the concepts of economics. In this unit, students build upon their knowledge of the economic concepts of scarcity, choice, wants, and needs. Students review the idea that economic wants are desires that can be satisfied with a good or service. We have also read the book titled, Ox-Cart Man, for better understanding and developing the rest of the package they have taken home.

Let's raise a cry to our Mighty God for world health! According to 2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Thank you so much for taking the time to come to conferences on Tuesday; it was wonderful to meet with all of you! Thank you too for the kind words of encouragement and blessing that so many of you offered-- you have no idea how much that meant to me. I am grateful to work alongside such fantastic parents and for the incredible support and encouragement you offer to me and to ZCS. I consider it a tremendous gift and privilege to get to partner with you in your child’s education! Thank you for sharing your delightful children with me!

Also, thanks to our amazing room-mom Erin Bremer and her team, for their splendid organizational skills with so many field trips together. You are simply amazing!

This Week:

Bible: We will continue to read in depth how Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane and about Jesus’ agony, the betrayal by Judas, and the trials of Jesus Christ. We are spending a lot of time meditating on these passages.
Literature Selection: Lily y su bolso de plástico morado
Phonics: Syllable classification: sílabas trabadas & sílabas abiertas.

Poem: Mi escuela, mi escuela.
Reading: W e’ll continue using a “retelling hand” to smoothly retell all of the major components of a story. We will also really zoom in on accuracy in reading.
Writing: We began last week Nonfiction “All About” books! Each child will choose a topic of interest, research, and organize their information into chapters. They are very excited about it.
Math: The students are doing a wonderful job with graphics. During the course of Tuesday we will have many visitors from other schools observing our children in action during math. Thank you for encouraging them to do their best work. They are always excited to be able to teach others all their linguistic skills.

Social Studies: I am so impressed how this group is working on their projects about Zeeland History. After our field trip to the Museum we already have more information and details to put together the projects of Zeeland.

Reading: March Reading Month is here! Our goal for K-5 this month is for students to step up and step out in their reading. They will step up as they work hard to become stronger readers. The Kindergarten team has designated a special activity for each week. All details below in our Housekeeping section.
Writing: Everything is set for launching our magazine full of How to’s. Children are working hard editing their papers and making them more readable to readers. They are ready to teach a lot of things. After that we will move to writing Nonfiction “All About” books! Each child will choose a topic of interest, research, and organize their information into chapters. This is quite the task but I know these writers are ready for the challenge!
Math: We are having fun learning about graphics. Children will collect and represent data on graphs. They will also interpret the graph to answer questions about the data shown. Thanks for helping your child learn how to create, read, and interpret graphs.

Social Studies: It is time to study in detail all about Zeeland. Thanks for all your help at home reading the Zeeland historical packet (I sent it home last week. If you did not receive it feel free to ask me for another one.) Many students already know a lot about our Zeeland. I hope our visit to the Museum will help them to better understand the history of our community since its inception.

Queridos Padres,

We had such an amazing field trip to the Fire Department & City Hall last Thursday. It was beautiful to see these kids step out and meet our amazing Mayor Kevin Klynstra. I was so impressed by the students’ respect, manners, and kindness. You have so much to be proud of as parents!
Thanks Field Trip Drivers! Haley Slagh, Joe Helms, Mark Westerbeke, Lindsey Kerber, Julie Hofman and Jill Hamm for driving to these places.

Bible Memory Verse: John 13:34-35 Due Date: March 6
Bible: Following Jesus' ministry chronologically we enter the last week of Jesus' life on this earth as a man. We will travel his journey step by step until He reaches the cross. Although Christmas is one of the most beautiful celebrations, The Holy Week must also be celebrated with all the joy and thanks that such sacrifice deserves.
Literature Selection: ¡Qué cosas dice mi abuela!
Phonics: Syllable classification: hiatus A hiato is formed in a word with two consecutive vowels which are part of different syllables. This may occur with two strong vowels (caer), two of the same vowels (leer), or in a diphthong broken with an accent (reí).

Reading: This week we will continue to focus on discovering all the parts of informational books such as content, chapters, diagrams, and order to help them write the how to’s pieces.
Writing: We will continue our writing of How-To! Two are worth more than one, right? For this reason students are reviewing with their writing partners. Do you understand what I want to teach? Are my instructions clear? Can you help me with more ideas?
Math: This week we will learn to read, interpret, compare and design the different types of graphics.

Social Studies: We are ready to end this unit by exercising the right to vote to elect our “2D President” The campaign has already begun. The presidential elections will be held on Wednesday, February 26, 2020. After the elections we will jump to our unit 5: How Do Communities Change? :)

This week your children enjoyed celebrating Day 100 & Valentine's Day with lots of candies and chocolates. I hope you have a very sweeet long weekend.

God's love and protection transcends our difficulties and trials. I have witnessed the enormous fidelity once again. I have had to undergo a minor unexpected surgery and on the doctor's recommendations I have stayed at home since Thursday. Everything went very well and I can't wait for Monday to see my children again.

Math: They are working hard in this long unit of mathematics. Most of them are doing it very well. Everyone has their own strategies to solve word problems. I am very grateful for all your support at home.
Social Studies: This week we will focus on government and laws within the community, what they are for and why it is important to comply with them. My little “neighbors” perplex me with their reasoning about diversity in our community. They have a heart of gold. God bless them all.

I thank God for another week full of blessings. We had a good time reflecting on some values like respect, self-control, and kindness. You should be so proud of your children; their ideas on how to apply these values more effectively are simply wonderful.

Social Studies: This week we will start a new Unit. How citizens live together in a community which includes local government! This is a perfect unit to study before our visit to the Mayor later this month!

We’ll continue learning about humility and putting others first this week. It has been fun to watch the kids let others go ahead of themselves and encourage others at school. Bible: Reporters from the Gazette of Galilee successfully launched their newspaper! Feel free to congratulate them through Seesaw. I hope you can enjoy it as much as I do. This week we are going to learn how Jesus teaches us through parables.
Literature Selection: La historia de Ruby Bridges
Phonics: grammatical morphemes: los morfemas flexivos (verbos irregulares) Students will understand that all verbs do not follow the same pattern when they are conjugated. Students will identify irregular present and past tense verbs based on stem changes and match the conjugated forms with the infinitive.
Word Wall Words: hizo, dije, mover, tratar, tener
Poem: E n el puerto.
Reading: This week we will focus on how comprehension links to every other component of reading (accuracy, fluency, expanding vocabulary). Then we will practice using suffixes and roots of words to find the meaning of new words. In shared reading, we’ll talk about justice and empathy through the story of Ruby Bridges.
Writing: We’ll learn more about using complete sentences and choosing juicy words instead of boring words. We’ll even throw some boring words away this week (like “said” and “happy”) and will use more interesting words to replace them.
Math: They are explaining how to subtract! Please watch him/her in Seesaw.☺ This week we will continue practicing two-digit numbers by making change. We will also practice adding and subtracting with word problems. Thanks for all your help at home!
Science: We are having fun studying What does it matter? Students are working cooperatively in their groups investigating and working hard on their presentations. This week we will have a great time investigating, Can all matter be returned to its original state after being heated? And to close with a flourish we will perform a fun experiment to discover the answer to the question Can small pieces be used to assemble (construct) something bigger? What makes up stuff?

Queridos Padres,

We had a great week getting back into the swing of school! The kids have worked so hard, have been wonderful helpers and friends for one another, and shared excitement and energy for learning. It was so nice seeing them with their crazy stuff!

¡Muchas gracias to our room-mom, Erin Bremer who plans everything so perfectly!! Pizza was so welcomed in our classroom!

Also, please join me in praying for those families who are navigating extremely difficult situations, especially several in our community who have lost family members. I’ve been continually mindful this week of the blessing of this community. God’s provision in our time of need is most often found in the community He has placed us in. I am so grateful to be part of this incredible community of believers.

Bible: I love seeing the faces of my students when they discover something "new" in the word of God. We are comparing the different ways of relating miracles in the gospels. This week we will read about Bartimaeus, the blind man and the widow's son. God is still doing miracles around us! Aleluya!!

Reading: We’re focusing on comprehension strategies this week, specifically inferring. We’ll talk about how to “read between the lines” and figure things out that aren’t written on the pages. This will help us deepen our comprehension of what we read.
Writing: We are beginning a new writing unit, Authors as Mentors, where we study the tricks and tips authors use in their stories and try to include them in our own stories.

Math: We are continuing to practice subtracting from 200. We have learned about ungrouping hundreds and tens and learned a new method! Thanks for all your help at home!
Science: We have successfully completed the first cycle. It is time to start the second cycle where we will investigate and analyze the information of the experiments in different materials, their properties and which reacts better for the purpose we will be investigating. Our focus question is “Why do birds choose different materials to build their nests?” and our investigation question is “I wonder if all bird nests look the same?”

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Happy New Year! I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. Before jumping right into things, we will start this week by celebrating God’s authority over all things and the plans he has for each of us even when so much is unknown to us!

While I had a wonderful break, I am really excited to get back into things with this awesome group of students. Their smiles light up my day and I’m thankful for the daily example of their genuine, child-like faith! Here’s to a great week ahead!

Also, I want to start this year by thanking our amazing room-mom Erin Bremer and her team who organized our Christmas party with great meaningful celebrations of Jesus nativity. We had a blast!

What a joy it is for me to celebrate our Everlasting Father’s birth with your children this week! Their excitement, faith and sweet energy are contagious and I am so grateful for each child. Queridos Padres,

We have built our Christmas tree with the different names of Jesus as the Light of the world, the True Vine and others. We have also left our gifts at the foot of the tree to all of you. Feel free to stop and see a great job of your child.

Thank you very much for all of your interest in supporting the Beacon Ministry. The children are very excited to fill the pack and play for all those babies who need their beautiful contributions. We will collect them until the last day of school on Friday, December 20 when the Ministry coordinator will come to personally thank the children.

Thank you also for allowing your children to attend and participate in CASA project. We are having a lot of fun especially with the history of the book, deep thoughts about assuming positive intentions, and technology, best part ever! :)

Bible: This week we are going deeper into the story of the birth of Jesus and the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the census. Thank you for working on the long Luke 2 Bible memory verse at home!

Reading: This will be a major reading review week. We have compiled so many strategies to use as we improve our comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary. This week we will practice when to use them. We will also expand our vocabulary as we read Christmas-themed books.

Writing: We are adding more events to our stories to add suspense before resolving the problem! It is fun to see how excited these students are about realistic fiction. Ask your child what his/her story is about!
Math: This week we will work finding the perimeter and area of a variety

On Tuesday night, Holland Christian came to host a meeting about their immersion programs. Zeeland Public also has some options for our immersion students in high school. Should any parents ask you about high school continuing immersion options, you can share that both Holland Christian and Zeeland Public have Spanish options. Holland Christian is also beginning an Advanced Mandarin program for our Mandarin-speaking graduates.

I trust that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! It is hard to believe that we are already counting down the days until Christmas. The next few weeks will fly by and be filled with excitement in our classroom. I pray that we’ll stay focused on Christ as the center of all of this holiday fun!

Dear Spanish Immersion families~

I am excited to share with you some information about a new addalingua project-based assessment. The Cultural competency, Academic alignment & Spanish language Assessment (CASA) is designed to measure students’ progress toward the three goals of immersion education. We are excited at ZCS to be able to pilot this new project-based assessment program-wide.

While the format of the CASA is similar to the aalpa, these new assessments bring more attention to cultural competency goals and student reflection.

What’s similar to the aalpa:

three tasks (interpretive, interpersonal, presentational)
timeline for completion
feedback loops to give students opportunities to set goals for themselves
helps teachers see how students authentically use Spanish language skills

What’s different from the aalpa:

deeper focus on cultural competency
greater emphasis on student reflection
topics tied to identity development and global empathy
new, interactive online learning platform

Our Spanish immersion teachers have spent the past few weeks being trained in how to administer the assessment and are excited to be able to work through this project with their students in the time between December 2 and Christmas Break. addalingua will, in some cases, be observing and collecting feedback to inform future development. It is an honor for us to be able to speak into the development of these assessments, and it will result in a final product that is tailored to the needs of addalingua schools such as ZCS.

Because this assessment spans several days, and each day builds on the previous days, it is important that students be present as much as possible during the assessment periods. We know that sickness is unavoidable at times, but we do ask that if your child must leave for an appointment that you avoid the following times listed here by your child’s teacher.

I love Thanksgiving because of how intentional everyone is about giving thanks. According to the psalms, coming to God with thanksgiving for everything should be more of a lifestyle than a holiday. My prayer is that we will be able to carry our thanksgivings far beyond this special day and that we’ll diligently practice giving thanks in all things. Math: They have gone to the market to buy fruits and vegetables and they have added and paid with the change that you have sent them! It has been a fun adventure. This week we will continue shopping and take the test.☺
Science: We had a lot of fun looking for the best solutions to avoid flooding on our local beaches. The students created models and talked with their group to find better ways to withstand the tests of rain and strong winds. Finally, they will create a poster to better explain their solutions. I can see future engineers in action in this group of students, very proud of all of them, tireless workers. After that, we will start a new Unit called What Does it Matter?

November 26:Thanksgiving food drive: In this time of giving, ZCS is going to bless His Harvest Stand, a local food pantry, with cereal and peanut butter. What a fun week we had last week with a publishing party, a field trip, and Día de los Deportes! For this reason, I want to thank everyone for making learning so much fun, but especially Lindsey Iverson for sending delicious sweets to our party. Also thanks to our chaperones Joe Helms, Andy Spears, Mike Zwagerman, Beth Vanderhyde, and Julie Phillips.

Our fundraiser for Ralph is up and running!! We will be selling t-shirts until November 22. They will be delivered to ZCS by Christmas so they will make great gifts! Queridos Padres,

Zeeland Christian has a sister school in the Philippines, Grace Community Christian School. Every grade has an opportunity to sponsor a child from GCCS to cover his/her tuition costs. Our friend this year is Ralph. With the help of Good Ink in Holland, we will work to create a custom t-shirt to sell. Throughout the next few weeks we will work on brainstorming ideas, acting as scientists as we make observations about what makes a good t-shirt, narrow down ideas, pitch our idea to the class with a friend, and eventually choose one. We will practice working together, communicating well, sharing our ideas, and using empathy. The kids are SO pumped about this new opportunity and it is amazing to see their enthusiasm!

This Week:
Bible Memory Verse: Malachi 3:1 Due Date: October 18
Bible: The Lord’s Prayer. We will study every part of the Lord’s prayer and each child will write it in his/her own words. Look for these in the hallway soon!
Literature Selection: Un caso grave de rayas (A bad case of stripes)
Phonics: Morfemas flexivos según el números. Students will determine when add, "s", "es", and "ces" to singular nouns to make them plural.
Wall Words: todos, juegos, algunos, veces, ustedes.
Poem: El Señor Metetes
Reading: This week we will continue working on making predictions from the text. We will also learn to go back in the text and use specific parts of it check our predictions. In our shared reading we are going to work on questioning, specifically on asking deeper questions about the heart of the story.
Writing: This unit is powerful because the students begin to evaluate their own stories and recognize that it is important to focus on details such as spelling, finger spaces between words, etc. We are also going to learn to write for an audience.
Math: Students successfully took their first mat test. We have already started our second unit of place value.
Science: Students are becoming more aware of how Michigan looks in maps. This week we will make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. Focus question: Why do we see only certain plants and animals at only certain times/places? and Investigation question: What can we find on a walk?

I am grateful for our never-changing Jesus as we learn about his kingdom message in Bible class! We admire who he was as we study his life and are encouraged to know he is still as faithful, firm, and compassionate today.

A huge GRACIAS goes out to Brittany VanHuis & Jill Hamm for providing us with amazing treats and juice boxes for our publishing party with Maestra Schrotenboer 3er grade classroom. We appreciate it so much!

This Week:

Bible Memory Verse: Psalm 105:4-6 Due Date: October 17

Bible: This week we will focus on the time between the Old Testament times and the New Testament times as people waited for the Messiah. We will learn about the promised Savior and the beginning of Greek rule, the Greek and Roman impact, as well as the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Reading: This week we will continue working on making predictions from the text. We will also learn to go back to the text and use specific parts of it check our predictions. Writing: We have begun a new unit called “Writing for Readers”. This unit is powerful because the students begin to evaluate their own stories and recognize that it is important to focus on details such as spelling, finger spaces between words, etc. We are also going to learn to write for an audience this week.

Math: Students are working hard solving word problems using different strategies. This is a complex compare problems. Although the problem uses the word menos, children need to add to solve the problem. The greater number is the unknown.

Science: Our science classroom will be different this year. You’ll see engaging classroom experiences with your children asking more questions, exploring and discussing possible solutions, investigating science concepts, using argumentation, and being fully active in the learning process.

This approach mirrors real-world science practices and deeply engages students in the learning process. There are no right or wrong answers, just some things that didn’t work. There is no textbook. Students will be expected to maintain a science notebook almost daily to use for reference. Students will write, draw, and orally report their findings for each lesson. Students will work cooperatively to find solutions to real-world problems. This style of inquiry-based teaching makes learning meaningful and memorable for children. Please ask your child to share with you his or her projects and discoveries, frequently. All assessments will be project-based and will be scored using a rubric. Student report cards will reflect class participation, assignments, and performance assessment tasks.
During this week students will respond to the focus question: What is the purpose of maps? & investigation question: Why do Michiganders use their hands to show where they live?

I was overwhelmed by receiving so much attention for my birthday and would like to thank every one of you so much for your kind greetings, blessings, and presents.☺ I'm sure that with all these wishes, it will be a great year. Thanks, Erin Bremer for making my birthday such a wonderful and memorable day. I do feel humbled!

Also a huge THANK YOU to Lindsey Iverson, Lindsey Kerber, Haley Slagh, Mark Westerbeke and Eme Helms who accompanied us on our first field trip to Cranes. The students and I appreciate it.

Reading: It’s great to have our reading groups up and running! I’ve been stressing the importance of reading the words accurately and rereading if something doesn’t make sense.
Writing: We are getting ready to fine-tune our stories so that we can celebrate with a publishing party. After that, we will start a new unit Writing for Readers.

Math: Students are working hard solving word problems using different strategies. Later this week they are going to solve two steps word problems.
Social Studies: We are ready to wrap up our Social Studies unit. The students will take their test, after that we will move to our first Science unit, from our new curriculum, Shifting Sands.

Queridos Padres,

This group of students has been such a gift to me already this fall! Overall they have had such an easy time adjusting to second grade and are working so well with one another. It has been really fun to see. This past week I checked out The Message’s version of our Bible memory verse which says, “Keep your eyes open for God, watch for his works; be alert for signs of his presence” (Psalm 105:5). I love the emphasis it puts on the fact that we have to actively watch for what God is doing, because He is obviously doing incredible things around us. We are going to talk about this together as a class this week Tuesday and will brainstorm ways we see God working around us throughout the week. I encourage you to do this at home as well!

Thanks for all of your encouragement and prayers. It has been so much fun working with your kids! Don’t forget to check out the videos and pictures on Facebook or on our website to see what happens at school!

Reading: This week we are learning more reading strategies such as, using the pictures to deepen comprehension.

Math: This week we will work to solve word problems called Add to and Take From problems. These problems begin with a quantity that is the modified by change-something is added or subtracted-which results in a new quantity.
Social Studies: We are having so much fun with this unit, we have taken a short walk around our school to get more ideas and draw up the map of our school community. This week we continue with transportation and how we move from one place to another.

Queridos Padres,

Devotions are always some of my favorite times with my students, and I wanted to share with you how they are enjoying and reflecting on our almighty God. I am humbled, amazed and SO grateful that we get to serve a God who loves us unconditionally.

I also want to thank the parents who will be helping us monitoring the classroom while I have lunch with one or two students on Friday. During this time the children and I can share more.

Due Date: September 30
Bible: We have wrapped up our first Bible unit about “The Christian Life” and James. Now we are going back to Old Testament times. Late last week we talked about the creation story and celebrated how creative and powerful our God is by focusing on these words... Y DIOS DIJO. AND GOD SAID. With only words he made everything... it doesn’t get more powerful than that! This week will review a ton from the Old Testament that was covered in first grade; we’ll cover Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, the judges, and the kings (Saul, David, and Solomon)! Did I mention that it’s going to be a brief review? :)

Reading: This week we will begin to build stamina as we read with a friend.
This will be a crucial part of our reading program and we’ll learn how to make good use of this time. We will learn how and when to help our partner during reading by encouraging the use of our reading strategies. We’ll also focus on dividing words into syllables and looking for parts in words that we already know (such as gozo in gozoso).
Writing: This week we will continue zooming in on the heart of our stories. We’ll learn how to reveal the most important part and include details about emotions. We will also focus on integrating capital letters and periods to make sure we are writing complete sentences.
Math: We are working identifying numbers as odd or even. Later this week we will work in equations chains and word problems. They are doing amazing job during Math time.
Social Studies: This week We are moving into our second social studies unit which focuses on where our community is geographically. We will learn about maps (map keys, titles, and symbols) as well as making a map of our local community. I know many of you are from Holland, Hudsonville, etc., but to keep us all on the same page we are going to focus on Zeeland because it is our local school community.

Queridos Padres,

Thank you so much to all parents for coming to our info meetings last week Thursday. It was a pleasure to meet you! I’d also like to thank Erin Bremer our fearless room-mom leader, for heading up this year’s parent volunteers. Thanks to all of you who have already volunteered to help out this year. I am blown away!

Finally, I am looking forward to this first full week of school. We have practiced most routines and classroom expectations and will begin to pick up the pace a bit more as we dive deeper into academic content. Parents, I’ve tried to take a lot of pictures and put them on Facebook with the hope that you will get a glimpse of how hard your child has been working.

Bible Memory Verse: James 1: 19-20 Due Date: September 14
Bible: We will continue learning from the book of James and its lessons
to Christians. This week our key lessons will be controlling our tongues (a tough one!) and the power of prayer. During this time I teach them about how much God loves it when we talk to him because he wants to be our father, savior, and best friend. Finally, keep working on our Bible memory work as I will give a fill-in-the-blank quiz. Thanks for sending words of encouragement to their practices on seesaw, that means a lot to them :)

Reading: We will work on going back to reread when we don’t
understand something. We will also begin reading with a friend as part of our Daily 3 reading this week and will spend much time practicing how to do this well! Finally, we will learn about “good fit books” as books that fit our purpose (to learn, be entertained), interests (animals, adventures, humor), level of comprehension (do I understand what I read?), and knowledge of the words (can I read most of them well?).
Writing: Our writer’s workshop is busy with story writing! This week we’ll learn more about discovering small moments, partnerships in writing, and stretching out small moment stories with many details.
Math: We are working finding teen Math Mountains and relate to addition problems with two unknown addends; practice addition and subtraction with totals less than or equal to 20.
Social Studies: This week we will continue describing different communities, comparing different kinds of communities and knowing our Local Community, Zeeland.

“Housekeeping” Items:
Library books: Our first library day will be Monday, Sept. 9. Your child
will be allowed to take 2 books home, both of which should be returned next week Monday so that he/she can check out 2 new books!
Children are invited to bring something special to share with their friends. For years I have been doing it not only to promote the production of the second language but also to help them socialize. Thank you for all your support. :)
