Il tempo di scatto nelle macchine fotografiche è misurato in secondi e in genere varia da 1/4000 a 30 secondi, in situazioni "normali" il valori utilizzati si aggirano intorno a 1/125.<br /> Aumentando o diminuendo il tempo di scatto possiamo far in modo di regolare l'esposizione della nostra foto, prolungando il tempo in cui l'otturatore rimane a contatto con la luce potremo avere un'esposizione perfetta anche con scarsa illuminazione, e viceversa diminuendo il tempo possiamo evitare di avere una foto sovraesposta.<br /> Un'altra funzione del tempo di scatto è quella di "congelare" il soggetto, infatti modificando il tempo di apertura del diaframma possiamo far in modo di evitare d'ottenere dei soggetti mossi, soggetti che durante il tempo dello scatto hanno modificato nello spazio la loro posizione rendendo l'immagine mossa e non nitida.
