Alarm raised as people bitten by tiger mosquitoes

About a week ago it was reported that invasive tiger mosquitoes had been spotted for the first time ever in the island of La Gomera and that some people had been bitten several times.

The tiger mosquito Aedes Albopictusis is of Asian origin and in recent years has been found in other Canary Islands as well as in several European countries. It is smaller than most other mosquitoes but more dangerous, as it can transmit several serious diseases, e.g. the zika virus as well as yellow, dengue and chikungunya fevers, etc., and is known for its close socialisation with humans.

The tiger mosquitoes were encountered in an agricultural area in Valle Gran Rey close to the mouth of the barranco (usually dry riverbed) near the sea and the area damaged by the floods caused by storm Therese this spring.

Experts from the institute for tropical diseases and public health of the university of La Laguna have visited the area and there have been several meetings of all relevant authorities. The area is being cleaned up, stagnant water accumulations which these insects need for breeding are being removed, insecticide is being sprayed and traps are installed. It is assumed by the scientists that this is an isolated occurrence of this insect due to the introduction of material to La Gomera infested with larvae or eggs.

The public is being called upon to be vigilant and immediately report any sightings of tiger mosquitoes and to take photos if possible. Images and reports should be sent by email to:

Worth a visit

Above is the entrance to the very informative visitors centre at the northern fringe of Garajonay national park. This recently refurbished interpretative centre boasts many exhibits besides explaining La Gomera’s flora, fauna, geology, history, culture, crafts, customs, etc. There are regular screenings of documentaries in the small theatre off the courtyard in the back of the main building, and the friendly helpful staff speak English. There's also a small museum cottage, craft shops, gardens with labelled plants and lots more. The centre is located at Juego de Bolas above the village of Las Rosas and is called Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional del Garajonay (click for more info), but is just outside of the park itself. A definite must-see for visitors and fortunately still free of charge. There is also a coffee shop and bakery offering delicious traditional Gomeran treats, which is easy to find as there’s always a delicious sweet scent of baking wafting through the clear mountain air, and lots of birdlife around the area waiting for crumbs.

Note that on some afternoons it can get very busy with coach tours, but these don’t stay for long once they've visited the clean and ample toilet facilities.

Above is a view from 'Mirador de Vallehermoso' La Gomera's Garajonay national park taken earlier this year on a very clear day. It shows an uninterrupted view north-west with La Palma island's two peaks looking very close, but that's an optical illusion as it is about 70 kms away. Today it's Dia de Canarias day once again, the Canarian 'national' holiday when the inhabitants of the Canaries are allowed to proudly say ''Soy Canario'' (I'm Canarian) and celebrate their feeling of national identity under Spanish colonial rule. Towns and villages enjoy one of the region’s biggest annual cultural celebrations with all things considered typically Canarian. The public holiday is the anniversary of the first session of the Canary Islands Parliament in 1983 and is celebrated every year with traditional music, dancing, food, concerts and many other local events across all of the islands. Wherever you are in the Canaries you will find local events, some also before and after the actual day itself. Below is the poster for the main event in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera, which starts at 2 pm in the harbour of Vueltas and continues all day until the early hours of Sunday morning:

Two million visitors

When I started this blog in August 2012 during the devastating La Gomera fire I never expected anything and hadn't a clue about blogging. I just wanted to report what was going on here as there wasn't much reliable information from or about La Gomera in English. The international media didn't bother checking facts, never mind sending correspondents, and just reported La Gomera's disaster as part of other fires in the Mediterranean with a bit of sensationalism mixed in. That was a long time ago and La Gomera has now completely recovered.

Surprisingly and unexpectedly my blog has just now clocked up over two million visits (see Google's counter on sidebar⇒) as the interest in this blog has grown over the years. While some of the clicks probably are purely accidental, the interest in the island of La Gomera has grown substantially, and there's a lot more information to be found in all kinds of media.

Unsurprisingly most of my readers came from English speaking countries, but lagomera1.blogspot.com was also read in every corner of the globe. Even some of the international press as well as local and Spanish media have used material from this blog, some with my permission, some without. Anyone is welcome to freely use material from this blog as long as the linked source is quoted as lagomera1.blogspot.com. Indeed sometimes I use material concerning La Gomera from other media, but I always strive to clearly indicate the source with a link to same.

There's also a lot of regular readers, some of whom I may have disappointed over recent years as I don't post that often anymore. Apologies to them, but thankfully there aren't a lot of exciting affairs in La Gomera to report normally, and I've always tried to steer well clear of minor problems, local politics and expats' antics unless it is necessary. My annual 1st of April news for fools seem to be especially popular and some readers have fallen into the trap. Click this to see a selection of them...

Anyway I hope to keep posting as La Gomera is well worth the effort.

British tourist dies and 14 injured in bus crash

A coach carrying the driver and 27 British tourists being transferred from their holiday accommodation in Playa de Santiago to the ferry in San Sebastian de La Gomera crashed yesterday just about 4 kms from its destination and only a few hundred yards above the location of another fatal bus crash in May last year.

One British tourist died in yesterday's crash, three are in a serious condition and a further 11 suffered minor injuries. The three most seriously injured have been transferred by helicopter to the university hospital in Tenerife, the others are being treated in La Gomera's hospital. It has been confirmed that the most seriously injured victim is the driver who remains in a critical condition.

The crash happened at around 1 pm and it has been reported that the Guardia Civil police suspect a brake failure on the steep serpentine mountain road which has lots of sharp bends and that the driver's actions prevented a much worse outcome, but further investigations are ongoing. The British Foreign Office is supporting the victims and their families while all victims are receiving psychological support provided by local authorities.

Storm's beautiful and beneficial side

Storm 'Therese' which badly affected the Canary Islands for a full week is now history and the damage it did will take some time to repair, but it also had a very beneficial side. It brought lots more badly needed rain after years of drought to end a winter that was was colder and more rainy than average in the archipelago. Most irrigation-water reservoirs are now full and overflowing. I took above image many years ago, when this reservoir, the Presa de La Quintana near Arure in La Gomera's Valle Gran Rey municipality, was full to capacity after heavy rains. It had been almost empty for years, but is now overflowing once more, guaranteeing irrigation water for the fields below for 2-3 years. The land you can see in the distance just above the dam is the southernmost Canary Island of El Hierro.

Now, I'd also like to share the beautiful image below of the waterfall at Chorro del Lance in Guada (upper Valle Gran Rey) which is only seen occasionally after copious precipitation. The church of San Antonio is in the foreground with the main road curled around it. The prayers for rain in that church were certainly heard. Naval base planned for La Gomera

It has just been announced that the outer harbour of Vueltas in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera, is to be turned into a Spanish naval base.

After the revelation a few days ago that the Spanish navy has been shadowing and tracking Russian vessels which had been acting suspiciously while in waters around the Canary Islands for a while, it comes as no surprise that European and Nato forces are stepping up surveillance of vessels around these islands.

In a recent article published by local media like gomeranoticias, navy commander Alejandro Fraga Pardo de Guevara was quoted as saying: “It is a satisfaction for the navy personnel to contribute to collective deterrence in the archipelago, our work guarantees the integrity of the territory and prevents conflicts through a credible presence at sea”.

In another interview later rear admiral Juan Antonio Pepino de Bromista-Chistoso revealed: ''In view of the recent growth of global instability and conflict our presence in this remote archipelago in the Atlantic will now be increased significantly with the addition of a new small naval base in La Gomera's Valle Gran Rey to support our existing presence in these parts. This new base will help to protect Spain in line with our European and Nato defence obligations. The measure may also help to reassure the large number of anxious elderly German tourists and residents in the area and in general promote the area's safety.'' However,. the move should also be seen in light of the American president laying claim to the Canary Islands last year, as I reported HERE...

The rear admiral added: "Most ports and harbours of the Canary Islands are extremely busy or at capacity. They also often accommodate busy marinas which hamper our manoeuvrability. Valle Gran Rey's under-used, almost empty, large outer port facility is the natural choice for a new navy base. Further, its strategic far south-western location in the Atlantic with sweeping views over that area of operations and protection by tall mountains shoreside combined with only a small civilian population are making it most suitable.''

It is planned that the base will initially be home to 3 to 5 warships only during phase one. The current almost empty ferry terminal is to be converted into the naval base's command centre and an additional two floors will be added on top of this. The pier ''will get a long-range radar, a watchtower, fuel storage and ancillary facilities''. The ferry 'Benchi Express' will continue to operate from Vueltas, but will be moved to the old pier in the inner harbour.

It remains to be seen how the spending power of the sailors when on leave will transform the nightlife of Valle Gran Rey when the naval base comes into operation on April 1st, 2027...ahoy there!

La Gomera hit by storm's torrential rain, see videos

Storm Therese (see previous posts HERE) caused lots of disruption and damage all over the Canary Islands during it's week-long life as one of the longest-lasting low pressure systems to affect the archipelago. There were well over 2.200 incidents reported, but thankfully all passed without any major injuries, but it did cause a lot of distress and material losses.

Yesterday, which was the final day of the dying storm, it was La Gomera's turn to be hit by torrential downpours. The worst affected areas were Alajero and Valle Gran Rey in the island's south and south-west, respectively. In Guada, the upper Valle Gran Rey, the island government's weather station reported over 105mm of precipitation and most of that came down in less than two hours. This caused numerous waterfalls, landslides and rockfalls and the barranco in the bottom of the valley became a raging torrent in a short time. Roads were impassable and the only road in and out of Valle Gran Rey had to be closed due to the amount of rocks and debris.One of the roads to Alajero was also closed as was the road along the coast in VGR and other minor roads in various parts of the island. Damage to properties, vehicles and infrastructure will take some time to fix, but miraculously there were no injuries.

The island's government declared an emergency and troops from the military emergency unit UME arrived by ferry to help with the clean-up operations. As many locals and tourists were left stranded with some having to catch flights in Tenerife, extra sailings by 'Benchi Express' ferry, which connects Valle Gran Rey and Alajero with the island's capital, were scheduled to facilitate arrivals and departures. As I write the clean-up continues and having previously experienced similar incidents I am confident that soon normality will return. Storm Therese has had it's final word and now is history and will be remembered for a long time. The weather for the coming days should be fairly good with the usual trade winds returning and very little rain, if any, expected.

I leave you with a warning. During the next few days caution is still advised because when the sun heats up, dries and expands loosened rocks and debris, rockfalls and landslides can be expected.

Update Sunday March 22nd, 9pm:

Upgrade of the rain warning for La Gomera for tomorrow, Monday March 23rd 2026, to level orange for locally very heavy rain and showers from 3pm until midnight with up to 30mm in just one hour possible.

Additional status yellow warning of thunderstorms valid from 10pm tonight until midnight tomorrow. The same upgraded warnings have been issued for the southern half of Tenerife and El Hierro island.

Update Monday morning March 23rd 2026:

Yet another update. The low is now almost over the Canary islands at around 1001hPa and the situation is very difficult to predict, as the dying system will be over or very close to the archipelago for a couple of days more. AEMET has dropped the t-storm warnings even though their prediction shows isolated thunderstorms over the islands, which may well happen. They've also issued an additional orange level rain warning for La Gomera, valid from 10am until 3pm today, when the previous orange warning for same will kick in until midnight. Tuesday then remains under a status yellow warning for heavy showers and now another additional yellow warning for same has been issued for Wednesday, valid until noon. San Sebastian de La Gomera had very heavy rain last night around 2am, when a whopping 47,5mm fell in a short time, while the rest of the island had very little rain. That's how unpredictable the situation is at this stage of a low pressure system that is lasting about a week(!) until it has finally completely dissipated on Thursday.

Storm 'Therese' will affect Canary Islands for days

Rain in San Sebastian de La Gomera recently

Yet another low pressure system is beginning to form north of the Canary Islands and has been named 'Therese'. This depression comes after an unusually cold winter which on the positive side has brought copious rainfalls after several years of drought.

Storm Therese's exact track is still a bit uncertain, but it will most likely affect the Canarian archipelago from Tuesday afternoon, March 17th 2025, and could last until early next week. Usually storms last a day or two but this depression is very slow-moving and long-lasting. Some models suggest it could be right over these islands on Sunday or Monday while beginning fo fill, but that is too far ahead for a reliable forecast.

Anyway it is best to be prepared for intense rainfalls, resulting rockfalls, gusty high winds (predominantly westerly), thunderstorms, very high waves with rough seas and colder than normal temperatures with snow on the highest peaks. At least some disruption can be expected and a few larger events like the 'Tecnologica' festival in Tenerife have already been postponed.

It is expected that several official alerts and warnings will be issued once more detail is known, but it definitely won't be hiking nor beach weather for several days.

Update March 17th 2026:

The depression is now expected to be situated just W-NW of Madeira on Thursday with a pressure of around 982 hPa. The first warnings for Thursday (below) have been issued by the Spanish meteorological service (aemet.es click this for their latest updates), and further warnings are expected for the following days.

Update March 18th:

Storm Therese is beginning to make its presence felt with La Gomera's Alto de Igualero weather station recording a gust of 108 km/h this morning and rain reported all over the island. The worst is yet to come and La Gomera's island government activated their emergency plan. All walks, trails, paths and all public recreational amenities have been closed. Schools, universities, etc., will close later today for the remainder of the week in all Canary Islands and the public have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor activities over the coming days. The Spanish meteorological service Aemet has also issued a special advisory for the Canary islands which states that the adverse weather will continue ''at least'' until Sunday, and looking at the latest weather models I'd say Monday at least. Below are the extended official Aemet warnings for Friday, but these may change as the situation develops (ed. they did change and I replaced the previously posted ones with the new ones):

As has been widely reported, Pope Leo XIV will visit the Canary Islands this year during his first official trip to Spain. While the visit's details are yet to be confirmed the visit will include Barcelona and Madrid as well as making history as the first time a reigning pope visits the Canarian archipelago. He might want to follow in the footsteps of many dignitaries and royalty with a visit to La Gomera for a bit of peace and serenity, where Catholicism is still widely practised.We shall see what the Holy See will decide for the papal visit.

2026 is forecast to start with unsettled weather as storm system Francis west of the Iberian Peninsula is going to affect the Canary Islands. Strong winds, cooler temperatures and rainy spells which may be prolonged, heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms, are expected on New Year's Day. The Spanish meteorological service AEMET has issued warnings for the above. The weather for the following days remains unsettled, but gradually improving. Keep informed by checking AEMET (click).

The locals will be very happy with the badly needed rain and will see it as a good sign for 2026.

Severe weather alert for Canaries this weekend

Storm 'Emilia' will bring very unsettled conditions to the Canary Islands this weekend with very rough seas, unusually high waves and swell, intense rainfalls, thunderstorms and very strong northerly winds predicted, all accompanied by a marked drop in temperatures which could even result in snow falling in the mountains above 1800 metres. Numerous weather warnings have been issued and local governments have activated their emergency plans as a precaution, while the Canary Islands' directorate for emergencies has issued a maximum alert with all events postponed or cancelled. In La Gomera all hiking paths and walks as well as all facilities in Garajonay national park have been closed. Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and travel. See weather alerts by AEMET here...

The warnings are in force from this Friday afternoon, Dec. 12th 2025, until Sunday lunchtime, but be aware that even when low Emilia has passed and warnings have been lifted, the danger of rockfalls persists for some time, especially in the mountainous terrain of La Gomera.

Controversial new law affects holiday property rentals

A recent article by Canarian Weekly reported the new law governing holiday property rentals and the controversy regarding same as follows:

" NEW CANARY ISLANDS HOLIDAY-LET LAW APPROVED AFTER FIERY PARLIAMENTARY CLASH

The Canary Islands Parliament has approved a new and highly controversial law to regulate holiday lets, following a tense debate that highlighted deep divisions between political parties, homeowners, and the hotel industry.

Tourism Minister Jessica de León said the law was difficult to negotiate but is necessary to bring order to a sector that has grown rapidly in recent years. Supporters of the law claim it protects families who rent out their properties by giving them clear, stable rules.

Opposition parties insist the law will make life harder for residents, especially those living in tourist zones.

The PSOE said the law clearly favours hotel owners and tourist investors. They argue that a better solution would have been to limit the number of properties each owner can rent out. They also believe the law will be repealed once there is a change of government.

Hotel sector vs holiday-rental owners

Outside Parliament, the hotel sector and holiday-rental owners are also clashing. The hotel federation Ashotel welcomed the law, saying it finally creates clear rules for a sector that has grown “out of control”.

But Ascav, which represents holiday-rental owners, called it a “black day” and said the law will mainly harm small homeowners. They warn it could dramatically reduce the number of holiday rentals available across the islands.

The key points of the new law are:

Holiday rentals are now classed as a business activity.

They will only be allowed in areas where local councils specifically approve them.

Councils must ensure that 80% of housing remains for residents (90% in major tourist areas and on La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro).

In high-pressure areas with a shortage of housing, new holiday-let licences will be suspended, although existing ones can continue.

New applications will depend on each council’s planning rules.

A law that changes the rules, but not the argument

Both sides claim they are protecting local residents, but the fierce arguments inside and outside Parliament suggest that the real conflict is over how the islands should manage tourism, housing, and the balance between residents and visitors.

With councils now responsible for applying the new rules, the coming months will show whether the law brings stability, or creates new problems." (Canarian Weekly)

Space flight with rockoon direct from La Gomera soon

When I first heard about the planned launch of a rockoon (a huge balloon with a rocket attached to it) to take place in the harbour of Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera, I thought it was yet another funny tall tale or false rumour doing the rounds. But what sounds like something that I might have dreamed up for my popular annual April Fool's Day posts is in fact true and about to happen in the middle of this month.

The company behind the venture with the slogan ''taking your business to space'' is B2Space Ltd. It was founded 2016 in the UK and later expanded to Spain with the ''purpose to provide a reliable, flexible and low cost access to Low Earth Orbit for small and micro satellites'' and ''High Altitude Operations and Near Space Testing''. The idea is that a stratospheric globe carries the rocket up close to the earth's atmosphere before its ignition to leave same for space, saving lots of fuel.

The next launch, planned for a ''window of opportunity between November 16th and 23rd 2025'', will be from the harbour of Vueltas in La Gomera, selected as the ideal site because of its remoteness and safety, plus I'd say the predominantly favourable weather played a role , too. According to the local press ''this maritime environment allows to meet security requirements and obtain the necessary licenses''. Could Valle Gran Rey's little-used harbour now transition to a spaceport ? There's a couple of acres of vacant space available. Before launch, on November 14th, the company will present the system, the associated planned activities, and further details in the harbour of Valle Gran Rey.

The presentation will take place in the terminal building (Estacion Maritima) in the outer harbour at 11:30am and is open to to the public. The launch of the rockoon is planned for Sunday Nov. 16th, if conditions are favourable. Be there to see it all, or if you fancy hitching a ride. A few space babies and space cadets in La Gomera might feel tempted to stow away and go higher. Rock on, rock-oon, next to the moon !

Updated weather warnings issued for Canary Islands

An additional status orange warning of very heavy downpours, thunderstorms and strong winds has been issued for the western Canary Islands a bit earlier today November 12th 2025 by the Spanish meteorological agency. In La Gomera the island's government has activated its emergency plan and asks to avoid travel and to stay away from all hiking trails, walks and unpaved forestry tracks. Ravines, valley floors and low lying areas should also be avoided due to the risk of flash flooding as rain accumulations of up to 30mm in just one hour can be expected.. Same applies to the other western Canary Islands of Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro. The warnings are valid from lunchtime today until tomorrow afternoon. Status yellow warnings of thunderstorms and wind have also been issued. A heavy swell with large waves can als be expected. Gran Canaria will be under similar warnings tomorrow only while Fuerteventura and Lanzarote will come under yellow warning (see image above). All this is due to a large area of low pressure, presently around 980 hPa, situated NNW of the Canary Islands and off the WNW of the Iberian peninsula, named storm Claudia.

Please be aware that there is a high risk of rockfalls, which will remain for a couple of days once the rain has cleared away and the sun heats up the wet mountainsides.
