Getting between the two cities is the hard part. There’s no train, the drive is long and traffic-dependent, and the SAN to LAX flights that remain are expensive for 30-odd minutes in the air. A rental adds cost, hotel parking, and sometimes one-way drop charges.

The simplest fix is a San Diego to LAX shuttle, and the one I keep coming back to is reLAXsan. It runs four times a day, with three pickup points across the county and drop-off right at your terminal. You book ahead, and it’s $68 per person each way. I wanted to know if I could recommend it, so I sent my well-traveled daughter from Old Town to catch a midnight flight to Seoul.

Why this works

There’s nothing to manage. You skip the drive, the rental, the parking, and the question of where to leave your car at LAX. You arrive in Old Town with your bags. The coach makes two quick stops in Sorrento Valley and Oceanside, then runs straight up I-5.

The price is the other draw. At $68 one way, it comes in well under a car service or rideshare, with no surge pricing and no wondering whether a driver will take a trip that long.

My daughter took the last shuttle of the day and hit some afternoon traffic, but she still reached LAX with hours to spare for check-in and security.

Where the airport shuttle picks up in San Diego

reLAXsan has three pickup points in San Diego County:

• Old Town San Diego, on the Old Town side of the train station
• Sorrento Valley / Del Mar
• Oceanside / Carlsbad

The Old Town stop is the one we used, and it’s adjacent to a generous parking lot that’s easy to find and pull into.

I parked, we spotted the shuttle, and within a few minutes she was on board. The driver took her bags, checked her ticket, and that was that.

For Uber or Google Maps, the address is 2728 Congress Street, San Diego. The exact corner is Congress Street and Telegraph Way, across from the Old Town Transit Center.

One local note

If you’re coming from the west side near Marina Boulevard, you can get held up by trolley and train crossings. There’s construction in the area right now that blocks the usual workaround, so add 5 to 10 minutes to your timing to be safe.

What the reLAXsan shuttle is like

reLAXsan asks you to arrive ten minutes before departure, which is about right. The driver loads bags at the back, checks your ticket, and you board. My daughter’s was a full-size shuttle bus, two seats on either side of a center aisle, clean and well kept, with the spacious seating reLAXsan advertises. The fleet seems to vary by run, so the size of your vehicle may differ from one departure to the next.

Onboard, you’ll find:

• Plugs for your devices at every seat (USB-C)
• Free Wi-Fi
• Snacks: bottled water, pretzels, Rice Krispies treats
• No bathroom on board, in case that matters to you

A note for taller travelers: my daughter is tall and had no trouble with the legroom, but it is, I would say, a typical pitch for a motor coach seat.

Luggage

The $68 fare includes one personal item, one carry-on, and one checked bag per passenger. A second checked bag runs $15, and that same $15 covers any bag over 50 lbs or oversized (length plus width plus height over 62 inches), with a hard ceiling of 75 lbs per bag. For most people headed to an international flight, that included checked bag is all you need.

Traveling with kids? There’s a car seat valet

The San Diego to LAX shuttle schedule

reLAXsan runs four departures a day, seven days a week, with a few Friday and Saturday evening exceptions. The current schedule is on their website.

My daughter took the 4:15 pm departure, the last of the day, for a flight leaving just before midnight. She was at LAX a little after 7:00 pm, with time to check in, clear security, and settle into the Tom Bradley International Terminal. TBIT has been beautifully renovated in recent years. The dining is good, the quiet corners are easy to find, and the extra hours pass comfortably.

Most international flights to Asia leave between 10:30 pm and 1:00 am, so the late-afternoon shuttle pairs naturally with them.

Where you’re dropped at LAX, and where to find it on the way back

reLAXsan drops you on the lower / arrivals level at LAX, right at your terminal. For the LAX to San Diego return, you’ll find the pickup under the orange “Shared Rides” signs at lower / arrivals, also at your terminal. There’s no off-airport transfer, no parking shuttle, no walking through a lot in the rain. For a shuttle service, it’s about as clean a curb-to-curb experience as you’ll find.

Who I’d send on it, and who I’d send elsewhere

The shuttle is the right call when:

• You’re a solo traveler or a couple flying out of LAX
• You’re visiting San Diego and need a ride to the airport for your flight home
• You want a buffer against traffic without spending your day behind the wheel
• You’d rather not ask a family member to give up an afternoon for the round-trip

A private car is the better answer when:

• Your flight times don’t line up with the shuttle schedule
• You’d rather have the privacy and quiet of a car

No. Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner runs from San Diego up the coast, but the closest it gets is downtown Los Angeles or Irvine, and neither station connects directly to the airport.

The 1913 Sefton Hotel Building

You’re staying in real San Diego history here, which feels genuinely unexpected. The Andaz brand reads modern lifestyle-boutique, so walking into a 1913 building catches you off guard. The mishmash of historic bones and contemporary boutique design works. San Diego architect William Hebbard designed the building for banker Joseph W. Sefton, Jr., and it opened two years before the 1915 Panama-California Exposition. It became the Maryland Hotel in 1916, ran under a handful of names after that, and reopened as Andaz in 2010.

The property today has 159 rooms across six floors, a 4,500-square-foot rooftop that Hyatt bills as the largest in the Gaslamp Quarter, and STK Steakhouse adjacent to the lobby.

Check-in and the Lobby

Valet is the only on-site parking, pulled in front of the F Street entrance. The arrival strip is short, so during a conference or game night you may need to circle the block once. A handful of paid lots are scattered nearby if you want to attempt self-parking.

The front desk team is genuinely warm. I was thanked for my Globalist status (the top tier of World of Hyatt) and handed an info card outlining the property’s amenities, along with a small Path-brand refillable water bottle that was both complimentary and mine to keep.

A guest-use station near the giraffes has a water dispenser, microwave, and plastic cups. Just past the lobby on the left, a small market stocks snacks, cold drinks, and local beer.

The info card mentions a complimentary beer and wine tasting in the lobby from 5 to 8 p.m. nightly. I looked and didn’t see it set up, so you may need to ask the front desk to point you to it. The lobby coffee station goes out in the morning with individual creamers and oranges for grab-and-go. I took a morning walk through East Village and grabbed some for the road. The coffee was good.

My Andaz Suite, Room 639

I’m writing this from Suite 639 on the sixth floor, with two layers of glass between me and 7th Street. The view onto 7th Street and a few neighboring rooftops isn’t the highlight, and that’s fine, because the double-pane windows and the angle of this side of the building kept the suite genuinely quiet for a downtown property.

If you want a view from your room, ask about a higher-floor exterior-facing option over busier F Street at booking. The best vantage points at this hotel are from the rooftop though, and any guest can take them in.

My suite was comfortable but does show some age around the wood finishes, and the furniture reads more lived-in than new. The current configuration opened in 2010 and was last refreshed in 2017.

I know what comparable downtown accommodations cost, and the value is good for what you’re paying, especially as a Hyatt Privé guest.

Other rooms vary, though. Rooms closer to the rooftop catch noise on event nights, and lower floors closer to the street pick up more ambient downtown sound. If quiet matters to you, flag it on your reservation (or tell me) well in advance so the team can place you accordingly.

This suite has an open layout. There’s no full wall between the living area and the bedroom, and you can walk a complete circle around the desk. A barn-style sliding door closes off the bathroom from the bedroom. The living area has a comfortable sofa with a pull-out, slightly IKEA in feel.

Two flat-screen televisions, one in the living room and one in the bedroom. The desk is generous. Keurig-style coffee maker, robes, a steamer, an iron, and an ironing board are standard. The closet has shelving and drawers.

In the bedroom, an indented alcove fits an open carry-on neatly. I’m picky about beds and bedding and I slept really well in this one. A noise machine sits on the nightstand, which feels like the property quietly acknowledging that downtown noise is part of the deal (it is).

Lather amenities come full-size in the shower with a small bottle of lotion at the sink. No cotton swabs or the other small luxury-hotel extras you might be used to, though the hair dryer was pretty effective.

The shower is handheld only, with good pressure but no rainhead. An arm cutout in the wall lets you turn the water on without soaking your sleeve, which is a nice touch.

Which Room or Suite to Book

Andaz San Diego has rooms from a 315-square-foot Queen up to the 1,275-square-foot Star Suite. Views split between interior-facing (looking into a plain interior light well, quieter, less natural light) and exterior-facing (street views, more downtown street noise).

How World of Hyatt status affects your room:

• Globalists. Suite upgrade up to the Andaz Suite at check-in, often confirmed in the Hyatt app the morning of arrival.
• Explorist and Discoverist. Can request an upgrade at check-in, but it usually won’t include suites.
• No Hyatt status, no advisor. You get the room category you book.
• Anyone booking through Hyatt Privé (status or no status). Can have the suite upgrade locked in at the time of booking. See the Globalist and Privé section below.

Andaz Queen and Andaz King. Entry-level options, smaller in footprint, and the right choice if you want a downtown Gaslamp stay at the lowest rate. Standard award redemptions usually land here.

Andaz Deluxe King. This is the room with the glass-walled shower between the bedroom and bathroom. There’s a curtain you can pull from the bedroom side, similar to certain Pendry rooms. Most couples find the layout fine once they know about the curtain. If you’re booking through Hyatt Privé, this is the room category that matters most.

Andaz Suite. This is the room I stayed in, with a separate living area, a king bedroom, and a barn door for the bathroom. It’s also the typical destination for Globalist suite upgrades (at check-in) and Privé Deluxe King upgrades (locked in at booking), both subject to availability.

Larger suites. The Andaz Extra Large Loft (680 square feet) has a separate living room and a dining table for four. The Cabana Suite (750 square feet) has a private spiral staircase to a poolside cabana on the rooftop. The Sweet Suite (800 square feet) is a top-floor option with a sectional sofa, a dining table for eight, and two bathrooms.

The Star Suite. The property’s signature room at 1,275 square feet on the top floor, with king bunk beds in a second bedroom. Bachelorette parties, milestone birthdays, and group trips book this one. There’s nothing else like it in San Diego.

Connecting and adjoining rooms. Roughly 44 of the 159 rooms offer connecting or adjoining options for families and groups.

The Rooftop, Pool, and Z Bar

The rooftop is the main draw at this hotel. At 4,500 square feet, it’s the largest rooftop in the Gaslamp Quarter according to Hyatt, and it’s what sets Andaz apart from other downtown options. The bar and restaurant are open to walk-ins. The pool is for hotel guests only.

When you step off the rooftop elevator, the layout splits in two. Directly ahead is a lounge with a large fire pit (ANDAZ SAN DIEGO branded across the center) and plenty of seating, perfect at happy hour. To the left, is the pool deck with a heated rectangular pool lined with lounge chairs and several oversized, television-equipped private cabanas for rent. Z Bar serves the pool and lounge area. On the other side, The Rooftop by STK serves food and doubles as the rooftop’s breakfast venue for hotel guests, with a fully retractable roof that comes in handy on cooler mornings.

The pool is small but bigger than online photos suggest. It’s a good size for a rooftop pool, not a destination pool, and not really a lap pool. Short laps work. The cabanas feel more like rooftop living rooms than pool cabanas. Lounge chairs fill up on weekends.

Views from the rooftop are the panoramic ones the rooms don’t deliver: a slice of Petco Park, the convention center, and a layer of downtown skyline. No bay views from up here, but the city stretch is satisfying enough that I’d recommend going up even if you’re not planning to use the pool. Wind picks up at certain times of day, which gets obvious fast if you’re trying to keep a hat on or a menu still.

The fitness center is on the rooftop level. I didn’t use it but saw the setup: standard cardio plus weights, enough to keep a routine going.

The rooftop runs a seasonal events calendar that includes DJs and ticketed parties open to the public on certain weekend nights. If you’re a light sleeper or planning a quiet stay, ask the front desk what’s on the calendar for your dates before requesting a high-floor room.

Dining: STK and The Rooftop by STK

There are two STK restaurants at the property, and the distinction matters because their menus and venues differ. STK Steakhouse is the dinner restaurant on the lobby level. The Rooftop by STK is the rooftop venue. The Rooftop by STK handles breakfast for hotel guests in the morning and a lighter rooftop menu through the day and evening.

I had breakfast at The Rooftop by STK, in essentially the same space where our advisor meeting had been the day before. Midweek and not particularly busy, the space felt private. I ordered the Andaz breakfast and asked to swap the potatoes for fruit which was no problem.

The eggs were cooked well, which is always a useful tell at a hotel. The avocado toast looked great when it landed at a nearby table. The Cafe Moto coffee was the standout. Breakfast came to about $44, typical hotel pricing and reasonable for the portions that arrived.

For dinner, I went to STK. Happy hour was a pleasant surprise: $3 oysters and a menu of small plates in the $8 to $9 range. I also ordered the STK and fries (slices of high-quality filet over good French fries with a hollandaise drizzle) and the tuna tacos (tuna tartare on a thin, crisp shell).

The crowd was a mix of locals after work, business travelers, and tourists, with martinis on a meaningful percentage of tables. STK has been at this property long enough to be a legitimate Gaslamp dining option, hotel guest or not.

In-room dining is ordered through a QR code in the room.

What Globalists and Privé Guests Get

For World of Hyatt Globalists, Andaz San Diego is better value than the larger downtown Hyatts. The property is a Category 5 in World of Hyatt, with standard award nights running 17,000 to 23,000 points depending on demand. The info card I received at check-in laid out the Globalist benefits at this property:

• Complimentary breakfast for up to two adults and two children per registered guest, covering one entrée, one juice, and one coffee per person. Overages charge to the room. Breakfast is served at The Rooftop by STK and can be eaten there or ordered to the room.
• Waived destination fee.
• Complimentary parking on points or free-night certificates.
• 4 p.m. departure at hotel discretion.
• Complimentary Andaz Suite upgrade based on availability at check-in, from any standard room category (Queen, King, or Deluxe King).

Breakfast is the standout benefit. At about $44 per person on my receipt, two registered guests across two nights are looking at roughly $176 of included food and beverage value. That sets Andaz apart from the larger conference-style Hyatts downtown, where Globalist breakfast is typically a buffet rather than à la carte at a property restaurant.

The suite upgrade is the wild card. Sometimes available at check-in, sometimes not. That’s where Hyatt Privé comes in.

Privé is Hyatt’s preferred-advisor program, and anyone can book through a Privé advisor (including me). You don’t need to be a Hyatt loyalty member to access it. The benefits stack with World of Hyatt status, so a Globalist who books through Privé gets both sets of benefits. At Andaz San Diego, Privé adds a $100 property credit applied to your hotel bill and a confirmed Andaz Suite upgrade at the time of booking when you book the Deluxe King category. The suite upgrade confirms when your reservation does, not at check-in.

If suite certainty matters, book Privé Deluxe King to lock the upgrade and the $100 credit. If you’re fine with Globalist availability playing out, book directly or on points.

Andaz vs. Pendry San Diego

The most common comparison I get for downtown San Diego is Andaz vs. Pendry San Diego, and honestly, it’s apples to oranges. I like both for different reasons.

They share the Gaslamp Quarter location and the boutique hotel category. The overlap pretty much ends there. Pendry is the luxury option in the neighborhood, with a full spa, more refined service, and higher rates. Andaz is the lifestyle-boutique option built around the rooftop pool and STK Steakhouse, with rates that are noticeably lower.

We book both properties for clients regularly. Andaz tends to attract couples and groups in their 20s and 30s, with a wider midweek mix that includes families, airline crew, and business travelers. Pendry attracts solo travelers, couples, and the occasional family who specifically want a luxury Gaslamp stay.

Location and Walkability

Andaz San Diego sits at the northern edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, at 600 F Street, putting most of downtown within an easy walk. The convention center is roughly 10 to 15 minutes straight down 6th Street. Petco Park is closer, just a few blocks away. The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park is walkable for anyone willing to clock a longer stretch.

The immediate neighborhood is classic mixed-use Gaslamp: high-end restaurants and boutique hotels alongside pawn shops, smoke shops, tattoo parlors, and the touristy stretches the area has always been known for. Coin-Op, a 21+ arcade bar with old-school games, sits across the street from Andaz and is worth a stop. The Gaslamp’s Victorian architecture is denser than people expect for downtown San Diego, which otherwise feels like a relatively new city.

You’ll see homeless people in the area. That’s true of most American downtown cores, and it’s true here. Walking 5th and 6th Streets between Andaz and Petco Park or the convention center is fine. I never felt unsafe during my stay. The energy isn’t different from walking through Soho in New York. Travelers familiar with major American downtowns will know what to expect. Those less familiar may want to think about it before choosing a downtown stay over La Jolla or Coronado.

East Village Walking Guide

Walk east from Andaz and the character shifts within a few blocks. Take 6th Street to Market and turn left to route through the cleaner stretches and avoid the immediate block to the left of the hotel where the homeless population sometimes concentrates. East Village leans residential, with high-rise apartments, juice bars, organic markets, and restaurants that serve the people who live there.

Worth walking to: Fault Line Park, which has both a playground (great if you’re with kids) and the spheres that measure fault-line shifts; the Central Library; Asa Bakery, my favorite Japanese bakery in San Diego; and the cluster of breweries, including Quartyard, East Village Tavern, and Bowl.

Is Andaz San Diego Family-Friendly?

Andaz isn’t positioned as a family hotel, but families do stay here, especially midweek. The Star Suite with king bunk beds would be fun for kids and adults sharing, and the connecting rooms work for groups traveling together.

That said, there’s no kids’ club, no children’s pool, and no programming aimed at families. The rooftop pool is shallow throughout (workable for kids who can stand), and lounge chairs fill on weekends. If you’re planning a true family trip in San Diego, Park Hyatt Aviara up the coast or the larger Manchester Grand Hyatt downtown both fit better.

Before You Book

A few practical things to know:

• The hotel is cashless. The front desk doesn’t keep cash on hand, so you can’t break a $20 there for tipping. Bring tipping cash for housekeeping and valet before you arrive.
• Check-out at 11 a.m. is earlier than the noon default at many Hyatts. Globalists can request a 4 p.m. departure at the hotel’s discretion (mine was granted).
• No spa on site, but Pendry’s spa is walkable, and several smaller day spas operate within a few blocks.
• No turn-down service.
• Andaz is pet-friendly. See the hotel website for current fees and policies.
• There’s no QR code for tipping housekeeping or valet. Bring exact cash, as the front desk also does not have change.

Who Andaz San Diego Is For

Downtown San Diego has a hotel for every kind of traveler, and Andaz fills two specific spots. The first is World of Hyatt loyalists who want to walk to Petco Park, the convention center, or the Rady Shell without paying Pendry rates.

The second is nightlife seekers — the rooftop runs DJ events and ticketed parties on certain weekend nights, and the Gaslamp’s bars and restaurants are right outside the door. If either is your trip, you’re going to like it here.

The Globalist breakfast at The Rooftop by STK is genuinely good, the rooftop pool delivers, and the benefits stack if you also book through Hyatt Privé (most Globalists I work with do, to lock the Andaz Suite at booking and the $100 credit).

Just know what you’re getting. It’s an urban property, comfortable and well-maintained, with a genuinely friendly staff, a great location, and a price that reflects what’s on offer. I had a great stay and recommend it to those I know it will fit.

If you only have a half day with a toddler, this is where you may spend the majority of your time.

With a toddler, here’s the day flow that works: start with the Guided Bus Tour. It’s 35 minutes, narrated, included with admission, and if your toddler stays on your lap for the ride, it doubles as a scouting trip. You’ll see what’s where and spot the animals worth walking back to. Use the rest of your time to revisit whatever your family would like to see. End the day at Wildlife Explorers Basecamp, where they can run around, splash at the water pad, and burn off whatever’s left in the tank. Eat before or after Basecamp, then head home for nap time. The Skyfari Aerial Tram is also included if you want bird’s-eye views without walking, and you can take collapsible strollers on it.

2. Birch Aquarium at Scripps

La Jolla · 2300 Expedition Way

Birch is our go-to rainy-day (or any-day) activity. It’s compact enough to do in 90 minutes, the tanks are at toddler eye level, and the outdoor tide-pool plaza has touch tanks where even crawlers can feel a sea star. My daughter has been mesmerized by the seahorse tank since she was about 8 months old.

The aquarium is small enough that you won’t lose half your day, and it’s nice because you can move at your own pace without feeling rushed. The ocean views from the terrace are spectacular and we love the Little Blue Penguins.

3. New Children’s Museum

This is not a dusty science museum with “please don’t touch” signs. The New Children’s Museum is a contemporary art museum where every installation is designed to be climbed on, crawled through, or painted on by kids. The ground floor has a dedicated baby/toddler area with soft surfaces and sensory play.

It’s 100% indoor and air-conditioned, making it the best option on a rare hot or rainy day in San Diego. Under 1 is free. Plan 2 hours. Toddlers will not want to leave. There’s also a neat outdoor playground across the street.

4. SeaWorld: Rescue Jr.

Most people think of SeaWorld as a big-kid park, but Rescue Jr. is a dedicated kids’ zone themed around marine animal rescue and conservation. 5. Sesame Place San Diego

An entire theme park built around the 2–5 set. Most rides have low height requirements (typically 36–38 inches) or none at all, the water play areas are shallow and warm, and your toddler will lose their mind seeing Elmo in person. This is the most toddler-focused park in San Diego.

It’s smaller than SeaWorld or LEGOLAND, which is actually a feature when you’re with toddlers. You can see the whole park without a death march.

For a 2–3 year old, the combination is a full morning.

The Backyard is an indoor play space inside the Natural History Museum, themed to feel like a backyard and restricted to ages 0–5 and their adults, so no big kids will bowl over your crawler. It sits next to the Flying Squirrel Café, so parents can grab a coffee and watch.

About 35 minutes north of central San Diego in Escondido, the Children’s Museum of Discovery (still often called by its old name, the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum) packs 13,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor exhibits aimed at ages 0–10. For toddlers specifically, the Toddler Tide Pool is a dedicated crawl-and-cruise space with climbing structures and a reading area. Curiocity is a pretend kids’ city with a grocery store, laundromat, and other roleplay stations. Outside in the Trudy Bronner Discovery Garden, there’s a water-play table, an Imagination Playground, an edible garden, and Sebastian, a 50+ year-old desert tortoise toddlers come back to see.

10. Living Coast Discovery Center

Most tourists skip this one. This small wildlife center on the shore of San Diego Bay has sea turtles, sharks, rays, and shorebirds, all at toddler height and arm’s reach. The stingray touch pool is the highlight for kids 2+. Paths are flat and paved.

It’s much smaller than the Zoo (you’ll be done in an hour), which is exactly the right size for an attention span measured in minutes.

A North County pick worth the drive: Moonlight Beach is at street level, which sounds small but is actually rare and toddler-magic. You walk straight from the parking lot onto the sand. There are no stairs, no bluff staircase, and no sandy slog with a stroller. A grassy park sits right behind the beach with a well-designed playground inches from the sand, so toddlers can bounce between sandcastles and slides without losing sightlines.

The shoreline is gently sloping with a designated lifeguarded swim-only zone, and the Marine Safety Center is staffed year-round (8 AM to dusk) with extra seasonal towers Memorial Day through Labor Day. Restrooms, outdoor showers, drinking water, and the seasonal Beach Wolf snack bar are all on-site. It’s also far enough north of the Tijuana sewage plume that water quality holds up reliably. A massive splash pad, wide grassy lawns, shaded playground equipment, and harbor views, all free. It’s the strongest free option in the city for this age. The splash pad has gentle fountains (not powerful jets), so even crawlers can sit in the water safely. Bring a change of clothes.

14. Mission Bay Park & Playgrounds

Mission Bay is a flat, calm, enclosed bay with grassy parks, playgrounds, and sandy beaches lining every shore. There’s no surf, the water is warm and shallow, and you can park right next to the sand at most points. Toddlers can wade, throw bread at ducks (don’t actually), and play on one of several playground structures.

Pair it with a walk along the bayside path. There are several public playgrounds dotted along the Mission Bay shoreline.

15. San Diego Botanic Garden: Seeds of Wonder

The San Diego Botanic Garden has two separate children’s gardens worth knowing about. Hamilton Children’s Garden (one acre, the largest kids’ garden on the West Coast) has Toni’s Tree House and themed garden rooms. Seeds of Wonder is the smaller, preschool-aged garden with a working model railroad, a playhouse, and a dinosaur dig. Toddlers can run freely in fenced, safe spaces in both, surrounded by flowers and butterflies.

The rest of the garden is a stroller paradise: wide paved paths, shade, and benches everywhere. The bamboo forest is shaded, swishing, and tall enough that toddlers go quiet.

16. La Jolla Cove: Seal Watching at Children’s Pool

I have taken a lot of toddlers to the Children’s Pool in La Jolla to see the harbor seals, especially if it’s during pupping season (December 15 through May 15), when there might be babies on the sand, too.

After the seals, walk 10 minutes north to see sea lions on the rocks at La Jolla Cove (or vice versa). These two areas are reliable for wildlife sightings that are rather unusual for an urban area and entertaining for all ages.

Bonus: My favorite gelato place is a slightly uphill stroller push above the Cove. It’s called Bobboi.

17. San Elijo Lagoon Nature Trail

The best “hike” for toddlers in San Diego County. The trail is flat, shaded, and follows the edge of a lagoon teeming with birds. Confident walkers can handle it on foot; younger ones ride in a jogging stroller (the trail is packed dirt, not paved, but smooth enough). It’s about a mile round trip to the viewpoint.

The new Nature Center at the trailhead has a small exhibit hall with animal skulls and feathers, which is toddler catnip.

18. Balboa Park Miniature Train and Carousel

Balboa Park · 1800 Zoo Pl

Running since 1948, this vintage miniature train takes riders on a 3-minute, half-mile loop through the park, past animal sculptures and through a small tunnel. Right next door is the 1910 hand-carved carousel, one of only about a dozen in North America that still runs the old brass-ring tradition: riders on the outer row try to grab a brass ring as the carousel turns, and whoever catches it wins a free re-ride.

This is the easiest add-on in Balboa Park. If you’re already heading to the Fleet Science Center or theNAT, the train and carousel sit a short walk from both and turn into a 20-minute side trip your toddler will remember more than the museum. Can I bring snacks into San Diego theme parks?

Yes, all four toddler-relevant parks (San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, LEGOLAND, Sesame Place) allow outside snacks and small lunch coolers. Glass containers and full-size meals usually are not allowed. A sippy cup or refillable water bottle is the most important thing to pack, since it’s easy to refill at some of the dining outlets.

Should I rent a stroller in San Diego or bring mine from home?

Bring yours from home if you can. Most U.S. airlines let you gate-check or check a stroller for free. Year-round, honestly. That’s the whole point of San Diego. But if I had to pick, September–October is ideal. Summer crowds thin out, and the weather stays warm (70s–80s). October is “Kids Free” month at the Zoo, Safari Park, LEGOLAND, and SeaWorld, but for toddler-only trips, the savings are minimal since kids 2 and under are already free at most attractions. Kids Free October mainly matters if you have older siblings traveling along, or if you’re visiting LEGOLAND since kids ages 2 and older need tickets.

Is San Diego Zoo or Safari Park better for toddlers?

For toddlers specifically, the Zoo wins on logistics: it’s centrally located in Balboa Park (10 min from most hotels), Wildlife Explorers Basecamp is built for kids under 5, and the included Bus Tour makes a half-day visit feel complete. Safari Park works for toddlers, too (see the next FAQ), but usually adds 30+ minutes of drive time on each end of the nap window. Should I visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park with a toddler? It’s a 30+ minute drive.

Yes, plenty of families with toddlers go. The day plays out like this: arrive at the 9 AM opening, get three solid hours in, leave by noon. If your toddler is a car-nap kid (not a stroller-nap kid), the drive back to your hotel becomes the nap, and the day works.

The math gets harder if your toddler doesn’t sleep in the car AND doesn’t sleep in the stroller. In that case, you’re squeezing 30+ minutes of drive time on each end into the nap window, which usually doesn’t leave room for a real visit. The Zoo is closer to most hotels and is the easier call if your toddler is a “needs the crib” type.

For a half-day Safari Park visit, ride the Africa Tram (45 minutes through the African plains habitat, included with admission) right when you arrive. Toddlers can sit, watch giraffes and rhinos from the safety of the tram, and often doze off. Pair it with a stroll through Walkabout Australia or Tiger Trail, and you’ve covered the highlights in 2 to 3 hours. If you want a deeper experience, the paid Cart Safari ($64 and up) offers a guided cart tour, and the 90-minute Wildlife Safari ($98 and up, formerly the Caravan Safari) sometimes lets you hand-feed giraffes from an open-air truck (they don’t advertise this, as it depends on what the animals are up for).

Is La Jolla good for toddlers?

Yes. La Jolla has three of the best toddler activities in the city: Birch Aquarium (mesmerizing tanks, touch pools), La Jolla Cove sea lions and Children’s Pool seals, and La Jolla Shores Beach (gentle waves, flat sand, playground). It’s also easy to navigate with a stroller and find quiet, kid-friendly restaurants.

1. The Mercer Hotel

The Mercer is one of my favorite hotels in this part of the city. It’s an original SoHo loft hotel, set in a Romanesque Revival building at the corner of Mercer and Prince. Christian Liaigre designed all 73 rooms in his signature understated style: high ceilings, oversized windows, hand-built furniture, and not a hint of corporate hotel polish. Staying there feels like borrowing a friend’s beautifully appointed New York apartment, two blocks from NYU.

We stayed at the Mercer during my daughter’s NYU move-in with what felt like a million bags, and the team made the whole thing easier. They received the Amazon deliveries that kept arriving (so many), helped us juggle the chaos of getting a freshman into a tiny dorm room, and turned what’s usually a stressful week into something close to manageable. It’s also a notable choice for parents of NYU athletes. The Paulson Center, NYU’s main athletics and fitness facility, is at 181 Mercer Street, just up the same street as the hotel. I’ve been booking clients here for years and know this property inside and out. It’s where I send families visiting the University of San Diego for orientation or move-in weekend, groups who want a central base without paying Mission Bay or Carlsbad resort prices, and locals looking for a fun staycation with resort amenities.

It is not a luxury hotel. The rooms are clean and comfortable, but the property’s origins as a sprawling motor lodge are still part of its character — outdoor corridors, room quality that varies by building, and thinner walls than you’d find at a newer build. Where Town and Country Is Located (And Why It Matters)

Town and Country sits on Hotel Circle North in San Diego’s Mission Valley, a neighborhood that confuses many first-time visitors. It’s not on the beach. It’s not downtown. There are no views to speak of. But it is a centrally located area where multiple freeways meet. Once you understand that, the value proposition clicks. It tops my list of best Mission Valley hotels.

What’s Nearby

The resort is right off both the I-5 and I-8 freeways, which means you can reach major San Diego attractions in 10 to 15 minutes. The San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park are less than five miles southeast. SeaWorld is about six miles west. Old Town is three miles north. The Gaslamp Quarter downtown is roughly six miles south. The airport is less than 7 miles away.

Fashion Valley Mall — with Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, and dozens of restaurants — is directly across the San Diego River, an easy five-minute walk. That matters more than it sounds: if you want to grab dinner off-property without driving, you have good options at the mall.

The Trolley Changes Everything

The Fashion Valley Transit Center is steps from the resort, and this is one of Town and Country’s most underrated features. The Green Line trolley connects you to Old Town (5 minutes), the Santa Fe Depot downtown (15 minutes), and SDSU/Snapdragon Stadium. You can visit the San Diego Zoo by taking the trolley to Old Town and transferring, or just grab a rideshare from there.

For families visiting for a Padres game, an event at Snapdragon Stadium, or a concert at Viejas Arena, this trolley access eliminates the need to deal with event-night parking entirely.

Popular Base for USD families

This is the hotel I book most often for families visiting the University of San Diego, and it’s one of the details you won’t find in any other review of this property. USD’s campus is less than three miles away, roughly a seven-minute drive up Linda Vista Road.

During orientation weekends, move-in, and graduation, hotels closer to campus either don’t exist or charge surge pricing. Town and Country gives you a real resort experience with pools and restaurants at a fraction of what you’d pay at a downtown hotel, and the drive to campus is easy on surface streets.

Which Room to Book

Town and Country has 671 rooms spread across multiple buildings and towers, and the experience varies significantly depending on where you end up.

Best Value: Happy Camper and Marco Polo Rooms

Happy Camper rooms (250 sq ft, king or two queens) are the most affordable option. They’re located toward the back of the property near a smaller, quieter pool, which is actually a plus if you don’t want the main pool scene. The trade-off is size: these are genuinely small rooms with limited workspace. Fine for a couple using the room as a crash pad, but tight for a family.

Marco Polo rooms (250 sq ft, king or two queens) are the same footprint but located in two-story bungalows right by the main pool and Lapper restaurant. You’ll hear the pool activity, but the convenience of walking out your door to the action is hard to beat with kids.

Best Room for Most Guests: Royal Palm Tower

Royal Palm Tower rooms (365 sq ft, king or two queens) are the largest standard rooms on property and the ones I recommend most often. They’re in the resort’s main tower with modern mid-century furniture, plush platform beds, a wet bar, and spacious private balconies. Views vary — you’ll get either Mission Valley or resort views, and some are significantly better than others.

What to know: Some Palm Tower rooms face a concrete wall. First-floor rooms in this tower can open to the parking lot. Request a higher floor with a resort or valley view.

The Regency Tower: Decent but Know the Quirks

Regency Tower rooms (325 sq ft) have the same mid-century design, and some include balconies. The fitness center is in this building, which is convenient. A few things to note: the elevators are slow and loud (guests mention this constantly), and some lower-floor rooms can feel dark or have limited views.

Worth the Upgrade: Terrace Suites and Firepit Rooms

Trendy Firepit Terrace rooms are ground-level rooms with private patios and their own fire pit. They’re a fun splurge for couples or a small family who want that outdoor-living feel without springing for a full suite.

Terrace Suites (in the tower, king or two queens) offer a separate living area, upgraded amenities, and private terraces with sweeping pool and Mission Valley views. These include a retro record player with vinyl records, which is a nice touch. If you want the best room experience on the property, this is it without going all the way to the Skyline Suite.

Classic Suites are a solid middle ground, with spacious layouts and separate living areas, available in king or two-queen configurations. These are good for families who need more room.

Skyline Suite (1,100 sq ft) is the top-floor showpiece with wall-to-wall windows, a private parlor, a dining room, a wet bar, a king bedroom, and an oversized balcony overlooking the resort and Mission Valley.

The Thin Walls Situation

The single most common complaint across every review platform: the walls between rooms are thin. Multiple guests report hearing conversations, TV noise, and worse from neighboring rooms. This is the legacy of the property’s motel-era construction. Requesting an end room or a higher floor in the Palm Tower can help, but it’s worth keeping in mind.

Pools and Activities

The pool complex is the heart of Town and Country, and it’s genuinely one of the best hotel pool setups in San Diego at this price point.

The Pools

The resort has three pools. The main pool is the largest, surrounded by the mid-century landscaping, cabanas, and the Lapper restaurant for poolside food and drinks. It’s lively, social, and can get crowded on summer weekends — arrive early to claim a good spot.

Twister is the resort’s four-story waterslide, and it’s the kind of amenity that justifies the stay for families with kids. There’s also a kids’ pool with a walk-in entry, and a separate adult pool that’s noticeably quieter if you want to actually relax.

A hot tub is available near the main pool area. Private cabanas are available for daily rental if you want a reserved shaded spot with service.

Activities and Programming

Town and Country runs a surprisingly robust activity schedule, especially during summer and holiday periods. Regular programming includes dive-in movies projected poolside, s’mores nights around the fire pits, scavenger hunts for kids (ask at the front desk), flamingo races at the Twister pool, and live music or DJs at Monkeybar most evenings Tuesday through Sunday.

There’s also a sand volleyball court, the penthouse fitness center in the Regency Tower, and Riverside Park behind the resort for walking the dog or a morning stroll along the San Diego River.

Dining

Town and Country has five dining and drink options on the property, which is unusually robust for a hotel at this price point. You won’t need to leave the resort to eat well, though Fashion Valley’s restaurants are a five-minute walk if you want variety.

ARLO

The resort’s signature restaurant serves modern California cuisine in a striking space with palm-lined patio seating and a central fireplace. Brunch here is excellent and worth planning around. Dinner reservations are recommended to avoid disappointment.

The food is genuinely good. ARLO draws locals and non-guests, which is always a telling sign. Prices are in line with what you’d pay at a comparable San Diego restaurant though may feel out of line with the resort’s overall positioning.

Lapper Kitchen + Tap

Poolside casual dining with elevated comfort food — fish tacos, nachos, burgers, flatbreads. This is where you’ll eat most meals if you’re spending the day at the pool. The convenience is hard to beat. Open for lunch and snacks.

Monkeybar

The outdoor bar and social hub with fire pits, craft cocktails, wood-fired pizzas, and live music or DJs most evenings. The vibe is genuinely fun and not overly corporate.

MRKT

Grab-and-go market with La Colombe coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads, and wood-fired pizza. This is your morning coffee stop and your “I don’t want to sit down for a meal” option. Hours are limited (closes around 9 PM), so plan accordingly.

A Note on Value

On-site dining prices are higher than the room rate might suggest. Budget-conscious families should know that Fashion Valley Mall is a short walk away, with dozens of restaurant options at every price point, from fast-casual to sit-down chains. The resort also offers a shuttle to Fashion Valley, Old Town, and other nearby destinations.

What to Know Before You Book

Much of this is addressed on the resort’s FAQ page, which you should read before booking.

Parking

Parking is $38/night in the adjacent parking structure, and there’s no free parking on the property. To be completely honest, this is not an unreasonable price for San Diego. The downtown hotels can charge $60/night and more.

If you have heavy luggage, request a bellman or luggage cart at check-in. Electric vehicle charging stations are available.

Tip: The resort offers parking packages, and our current package includes discounted parking plus other benefits to help offset the cost.

Resort Fee

Town and Country charges a mandatory $30/night resort fee (plus tax) on top of your room rate. This is also not optional. Every guest pays it regardless of whether they use the included amenities. Here’s what the fee covers:

• Waterslide access at the Twister pool
• In-room Keurig coffee
• Discount tickets to the San Diego Zoo
• 10% off cabana and daybed rentals
• Resort activity programming (dive-in movies, scavenger hunts, flamingo races, etc.)
• Live music and DJ entertainment
• Fitness center access

Our package currently waives your resort fee. You still get full access to everything listed above — you just don’t pay the fee.

The resort fee amount and inclusions are set by the hotel and subject to change.

Pet Policy

Town and Country is one of the most dog-friendly hotels in San Diego. There’s a dedicated dog run on the property, three acres of Riverside Park for walks, and a portion of pet fees goes to a local animal rescue. Expect a pet fee per stay.

Check-In and Check-Out

Check-in is at 4:00 PM, check-out is at 11:00 AM. The resort will do its best to accommodate early check-in and late check-out requests. Digital check-in is available through the resort’s app.

Getting Around the Property

This is a large resort on 32 acres. Walking from one end to the other takes a few minutes, and guests in the Happy Camper and Marco Polo buildings are a real walk from the parking garage and front desk. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s worth knowing, especially for kids and people with mobility issues.

Shuttle Service

The resort runs a complimentary shuttle to Fashion Valley Mall, Old Town, RiverWalk Golf Club, Mission Valley Center, and Hazard Center. This is useful if you don’t want to move your car (and pay for parking elsewhere).

Conferences and Events

Town and Country has nearly 300,000 square feet of meeting and event space, making it one of the largest conference hotels in San Diego. During major conferences, the resort’s vibe shifts. The restaurants, pools, and the lobby bar get busier.

Who Town and Country Is Best For

Part of what we do is try to fit resorts into budgets, and this is a go-to when people want a central San Diego location and do not care about views or proximity to the beach. They’re looking at a comfortable price point below $350/night. We can catch this resort in the $200s/night or even lower sometimes, and that’s rare in San Diego.

Families with kids: The pool complex, waterslide, programming, and on-site dining make this an easy family choice. It’s also one of the few San Diego resorts where you can let older kids roam the grounds without worry.

Staycationers and locals: San Diego locals consistently rate this as one of their favorite staycation spots. The resort feel, trolley access, and proximity to Fashion Valley make it a genuine getaway without leaving the city.

USD families: Parents visiting for orientation, move-in, Parents Weekend, or graduation. Close to campus, resort amenities to enjoy between university events, and significantly cheaper than downtown alternatives.

Convention and event attendees: If you’re attending a conference at Town and Country, you’re already here. The resort is a perennial award-winner for meetings and events.

Dog owners: Between the dog run, Riverside Park, and the pet-friendly rooms, this is one of the most accommodating hotels for dogs in San Diego.

Who Should Look Elsewhere

Couples seeking a quiet, romantic getaway: The thin walls and family-oriented/conference atmosphere may not be the best fit. Consider Alila Marea Beach Resort Encinitas, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa, or The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe instead. All three offer a more intimate, serene experience. • Best For: Families planning multiple visits who want flexibility and free parking.
• Ideal Visits: Any day the parks are open with no blockout dates.
• Parks Included: LEGOLAND Theme Park, Water Park (seasonal), Peppa Pig Theme Park, and SEA LIFE Florida Aquarium, plus admission to SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium, Madame Tussauds Orlando, The Orlando Eye, and LEGO Discovery Center – Atlanta.
• Parking: Free standard parking is included. Upgrade to Covered Parking at 25% off when pre-purchased online.

• Ideal Visits: Any day the parks are open. No blockout dates.
• Parks Included: All LEGOLAND Florida parks plus admission to 30+ Merlin attractions nationwide including LEGOLAND California and New York (with free parking and in-park discounts at both), SEA LIFE aquariums, Madame Tussauds locations, and LEGO Discovery Centers across North America.
• Parking: Free standard parking, plus 50% off covered and valet parking when pre-purchased online.
• Discounts: The highest tier — 20% off food, hotels, FasTrack, VIP tours, and cabanas. 15% off retail.

About Bring-a-Friend Tickets

Gold and Elite passholders receive complimentary Bring-a-Friend tickets throughout the year. These are dated multi-park tickets with specific booking and travel windows.

• Elite: 4 tickets per year, distributed quarterly (1 per send).
• Gold: 2 tickets per year, distributed twice per year (1 per send).
• Available to passholders who purchased or renewed on or after November 18, 2025 (both paid-in-full and monthly pay).
• Tickets are not issued immediately after purchase.
• Limited to your home park (LEGOLAND Florida if you bought your pass there).
• Not valid for passholder previews or special events.

Insider Tips for Passholders

A few strategies that can save money beyond the listed pass benefits.

The “One Gold Per Vehicle” Strategy

This works the same way as the strategy I recommend for LEGOLAND California.

Instead of buying Gold or Elite passes for every family member, put one Gold or Elite pass in the car and give everyone else Silver passes.

• Parking is charged per vehicle, not per person. One Gold or Elite passholder in the car means everyone parks free.
• Discounts apply to the whole transaction. The Gold or Elite passholder’s discount rate covers the entire bill when they pay.

With standard parking at $35+ tax per visit, this approach pays for itself quickly. At the current sale prices, Gold is only $30 more than Silver. So one trip with free parking nearly covers the upgrade.

Try Before You Buy

Not sure an annual pass makes sense? Visit on a day ticket first. LEGOLAND Florida gives you a $100 credit toward one Annual Pass for each purchased ticket. You must upgrade within 30 days of your visit at the Ticket Window (not online), and all guests must be present for photos.

Note: This is a flat $100 credit, not the full value of your ticket applied. If your day ticket cost $75, you still get $100 off the annual pass. If it cost $130, the credit is capped at $100. Check the FAQs for details. (This is different from LEGOLAND California, which lets you apply the full ticket price toward a pass.)

Water Park Seasonality

The LEGOLAND Water Park is seasonal. In 2026, it’s open from February 14 through November 1, with daily operation only during the summer (late May through late August). Outside of summer, operating days vary. Check the park calendar before your visit.

No Reservations Required

No reservations are needed for any annual pass tier. Check the park calendar for operating hours and blockout dates (Silver only), and you’re good to go.

Annual Pass vs. Day Tickets: When the Math Works

For Tourists (1–3 Day Visit)

If you’re visiting LEGOLAND Florida once as part of an Orlando vacation, day tickets are almost always the better deal. Kids tickets start as low as $39 with the purchase of a full-price adult multi-park ticket, and multi-day hotel packages often include park admission.

For a two- to three-day visit, run the numbers. Once you add parking per day ($35+ tax each time) and multi-park access, a Gold Pass at the current sale price of $219 can approach or beat the cost of separate day tickets for repeat visitors who drive.

For Florida Residents and Driving Families

This is where annual passes make the most sense. With parking at $35+ tax per visit, Gold typically becomes cheaper by the second visit for families who drive.

Passholders also get the flexibility to make shorter, low-pressure visits that allow them to leave early for a thunderstorm, pop in just for Peppa Pig, or split the parks across multiple trips rather than cramming everything into one day.

Monthly pay is available for Florida residents who prefer to spread the cost, though it requires a 12-month commitment and costs more overall than paying in full.

My Recommendation

• One-day visitors: Buy discounted day tickets.
• Two to three days: Run the numbers. Gold may already make sense once parking is factored in.
• Florida residents: Annual passes almost always win. Gold is the sweet spot for most families.

LEGOLAND Florida Annual Pass FAQ

These are the most common questions families ask about LEGOLAND Florida Annual Passes.

The Verdict

Choosing the right LEGOLAND Florida Annual Pass comes down to how often you’ll visit and whether you’re driving.

• One-time visitors: Discounted day tickets are the best value. Don’t buy an annual pass for a single trip.
• Two or more visits with a car: The Gold Pass pays for itself quickly with free parking, no blockout dates, and solid discounts. At the current sale price, it’s only $30 more than Silver — and Silver doesn’t include parking. This is my recommendation for most families.
• Frequent travelers and LEGO super-fans: The Elite Pass delivers the most value if you’ll use the Merlin attractions network or want the highest discounts and complete flexibility.

With the right pass, LEGOLAND Florida becomes a low-stress, flexible membership rather than a one-off theme park expense — especially now that Galacticoaster has opened, adding another reason to come back.

I’m glad they made the switch. Reserve & Ride was a virtual queue that required you to open the app, select a ride, wait for a countdown timer, and then go back to the ride at your assigned time. It confused many guests, and I heard from plenty of families who found it frustrating (and expensive). Fastrack is much more straightforward: you buy it, you get a barcode, and you walk up to a dedicated entrance whenever you’re ready.

The catch is that it’s a separate purchase on top of your park admission, and it’s sold per person, per day. So you’ll want to understand what’s included before you buy. That’s what this guide is for, and I’ll update it as my team and clients continue to use it.

What Is LEGOLAND Fastrack?

Fastrack is LEGOLAND California’s skip-the-line pass. Instead of waiting in the regular standby queue, you walk up to a separate Fastrack entrance at eligible rides, show your barcode to a team member, and you’re in.

There are no time slots, no app reservations, and no countdown timers. This is a significant improvement over Reserve & Ride, which required you to reserve a specific ride through the app, wait for your virtual queue time to count down, and then return to the ride to scan a QR code. Many families told me they spent more time managing the app than enjoying the park.

A few things to know before you buy:

• Fastrack does not include park admission. It’s an add-on.
• It’s also non-refundable and tied to a specific date, so be sure of your plans before purchasing.

How Fastrack Works

After you purchase Fastrack (online or at the park), you’ll receive a barcode on your phone or a printed pass. When you’re ready to ride, head to the Fastrack entrance, let them scan your barcode, and go through the shorter queue.

There’s a five-minute cooldown between rides, meaning you need to wait five minutes after finishing one ride before you can scan into the next. This is mostly to prevent people from riding the same thing on repeat without a break.

If you have Bronze or Silver (the tiers with a set number of rides), each scan counts toward your total. Once you’ve used them all, you’re done. Gold is unlimited, so you don’t need to worry about keeping track of your count.

One more thing: you can upgrade from Bronze or Silver to Gold at Guest Services in The Beginning, subject to availability. So if you start with Bronze and realize you want more, you have that option.

Fastrack Tiers and Pricing

LEGOLAND California offers three Fastrack tiers plus a single-ride option.

Bronze: $20 per person

Bronze Fastrack includes three rides across 15 eligible attractions. This is a solid entry point if you want to skip the line on two or three of the most popular rides without a significant additional expense. I think this tier makes sense for most families on a moderately busy day.

Eligible rides (15): Coast Cruise, DUPLO Little Dino Trail, Driving School, Emmet’s Flying Adventure, Explorer River Quest, Junior Driving School, Kid Power Tower, LEGO City: Deep Sea Adventure, LEGO NINJAGO: The Ride, Lost Kingdom Adventure, Pirate Reef, Queen Watevra’s Carousel, Skipper School, The Dragon, and Unikitty Disco Drop.

Silver: $38 per person

Silver Fastrack includes six rides across 17 eligible attractions. You get access to the same ride list as Gold (including Coastersaurus and LEGO Technic Coaster, which are not available on Bronze), but with a cap of six total rides for the day. If your kids are tall enough for those coasters and you don’t anticipate needing more than six Fastrack rides, this is the tier I’d recommend.

Eligible rides (17): Everything in Bronze, plus Coastersaurus and LEGO Technic Coaster.

Gold: $89 per person

Gold Fastrack provides unlimited rides on all 17 eligible attractions throughout the day, subject to the five-minute cooldown between rides. The ride list is identical to Silver. The difference is that you’re not capped at six rides, so you can use Fastrack as many times as you’d like. This is a considerable investment, especially for families. A family of four would pay $356 before park admission, so I’d reserve this tier for the busiest days of the year when every ride has a substantial wait, and you know you’ll use it well beyond six times.

Eligible rides (17): Same attractions as Silver, with unlimited access.

One Shots: Price varies

One Shots are single-ride Fastrack passes for individual attractions, available only on the day of your visit through the LEGOLAND app. I like these as a fallback option. If you’re already in the park and see a 45-minute wait for The Dragon, you can purchase a One Shot for that one ride instead of committing to a full tier.

What’s NOT Included on Fastrack

This is important, and I don’t think LEGOLAND makes it obvious enough on their website.

All three rides in the new LEGO Galaxy land (opening March 6, 2026) are excluded from every Fastrack tier, including Gold.

Galacticoaster is the one everyone is going to want to ride. It’s LEGOLAND’s first new coaster in over 20 years. It’s an indoor family coaster where you customize a digital spacecraft before launch, and it reaches speeds up to 40 mph. Groups ride in sets of four. Height requirement is 36 inches (48 inches to ride without an adult).

G-Force Test Facility is a spinning ride that simulates astronaut training. Height requirement is 40 inches.

DUPLO Launch and Land is a gentle ride for toddlers.

There is no Fastrack access for any of these rides at launch. The only way to ride them is in the standby queue. If you’re visiting after March 6, plan to arrive at park opening and head to LEGO Galaxy first. I expect the lines there to be significant for at least the first few months. Annual Pass Discounts on Fastrack

If you have a LEGOLAND California Annual Pass, you’ll get a discount on Fastrack:

• Gold Pass: 10% off Fastrack
• Platinum Pass: 15% off Fastrack
• Elite Pass: 20% off Fastrack

These are the same discount percentages that applied to Reserve & Ride. Make sure you’re logged into your passholder account when purchasing so the discount applies automatically. Is Fastrack Worth It?

It depends entirely on when you’re visiting.

On a weekday during the off-peak season (roughly September through mid-March, excluding holidays), you probably don’t need it. Wait times for most rides are under 15 minutes, and many are walk-on. I wouldn’t spend the money on those days. Check the LEGOLAND California calendar before your visit to get a sense of expected crowds.

On a peak weekend, during spring break, or over summer, that’s a different story. Wait times can stretch to 45 minutes or more on popular rides, and if you have young kids who don’t do well in long lines, Fastrack can genuinely save your day. It’s also worth considering during the first few months after LEGO Galaxy opens, when crowd patterns across the park may shift.

For most families visiting on a moderately busy day, I think Bronze at $20 per person is a reasonable investment. Three rides are enough to cover the most popular attractions like The Dragon and LEGO NINJAGO: The Ride. Silver at $38 makes sense if your kids want Coastersaurus and Technic Coaster, since those tend to draw longer lines. Gold at $89 per person is harder to justify unless you’re visiting on one of the busiest days of the year.

Keep in mind that Fastrack only covers the main theme park. It doesn’t apply to rides in the LEGOLAND Water Park.

Fastrack vs. Reserve & Ride: What Changed

If you’ve been to LEGOLAND before and used Reserve & Ride, here’s what’s different.

Reserve & Ride was a virtual queue. You purchased a tier (Express, Deluxe, or Ultimate, priced from $35 to $100), opened the LEGOLAND app, picked a ride, and reserved a time slot. A countdown timer appeared, and when it reached zero, you’d go back to the ride and scan a QR code to enter.

The concept was fine, but the execution was clunky. Time slots could close without warning if too many people reserved, the app wasn’t always reliable, and you couldn’t just walk up to a ride when your family felt like it.

Fastrack drops all of that. There’s no app interaction after purchase, no time slots, and no countdown. You walk up to the Fastrack entrance whenever your family is ready and present your barcode. It’s much more like what you’d find at other major theme parks.

The pricing also shifted. Reserve & Ride started at $35 per person, while Fastrack starts at $20, so the entry point is lower. The top tier is slightly cheaper as well ($89 vs. $100 for Reserve & Ride Ultimate). The tiers themselves are now called Bronze, Silver, and Gold instead of Express, Deluxe, and Ultimate.

How to Buy Fastrack

You can purchase Fastrack in advance through the LEGOLAND California Fastrack page or at the park on the day of your visit. If you’re buying park tickets at the same time, you can add Fastrack during checkout on LEGOLAND’s ticket page.

One Shots (single-ride passes) are only available on the day of your visit through the LEGOLAND app.

I recommend buying in advance when you can. Fastrack is sold on a limited basis and can allegedly sell out on peak days.

Tips for Using Fastrack

Save your Fastrack rides for the busiest part of the day. If you have Bronze or Silver, don’t use your rides first thing in the morning when lines are short. Arrive at park opening and enjoy a few popular rides with short standby waits, then use your Fastrack rides between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. when lines peak.

Prioritize the right rides. The Dragon and LEGO NINJAGO: The Ride consistently have the longest waits. Those are the first ones I’d use Fastrack on if you have limited rides.

Remember the five-minute cooldown. You can’t scan into the next ride immediately after finishing one. Plan a quick snack or restroom break in between.

Everyone in your group needs their own pass. Fastrack is per person, so factor the full family cost into your budget. For a family of four on Bronze, that’s $80. On Gold, it’s $356.

Staying at the LEGOLAND Hotel or LEGOLAND Castle Hotel? Hotel guests get early park entry, which gives you a head start on popular rides before the general public arrives. But if you want the ideal window: A weekday morning in spring (March through May) or fall (September through November), arriving when the gates open at 9 a.m. That’s when you’ll find the lightest crowds and most active animals. If weekends are your only option, Sunday morning beats Saturday, and any season works if you plan around it.

I know a Zoo visit is an investment for a family once you factor in tickets, parking, and food, so if you have the flexibility to choose your dates, this guide breaks down every variable. And if you don’t have flexibility? You’ll still have a great time.

Best Months to Visit San Diego Zoo

This guide focuses specifically on the Zoo. If you’re still deciding when to visit San Diego overall, my best time to visit San Diego guide covers citywide weather, events, and crowds.

Spring (March Through May): The Sweet Spot

Spring is my top recommendation for most visitors. Temperatures are mild (mid-60s to low 70s), the Zoo’s botanical gardens are at their most vibrant, and crowds are manageable outside of spring break weeks. Animals tend to be active throughout the day rather than retreating to shade by late morning, which is a real advantage when you’re trying to see as much as possible.

The one exception is spring break, typically mid-March through mid-April, depending on school schedules. If you can avoid those weeks, you’ll have a noticeably quieter experience.

Fall (September Through November): The Local’s Pick

Fall is when I personally visit most often. September still has warm days, but the summer tourist rush has subsided.

October is a standout month thanks to Kids Free San Diego, when children ages 11 and under get free admission to the Zoo (and many other San Diego attractions). It’s a fantastic deal, though weekends in October do get busier because of it. Weekday visits in October are some of the best days of the entire year because you get pleasant weather, free kid admission, and noticeably lighter crowds all at once.

November is one of the quietest months at the Zoo, falling in that lull between Halloween and the holiday season. If you’re visiting San Diego in November, carve out a Zoo day.

Summer (June Through August): Hot and Often Crowded, but Nighttime Zoo Changes Everything

Summer is peak season. School is out, tourists are in town, and temperatures climb into the low 80s (which doesn’t sound bad until you’re walking 100 hilly acres with kids). If summer is your only option, I’d recommend an afternoon-to-evening strategy during Nighttime Zoo season, which typically runs from late May through early September.

The Zoo extends its hours, adds live entertainment, and the whole atmosphere shifts. Animals that are sluggish in the afternoon heat become active again as the evening cools down, and the crowds thin considerably after 5 p.m.

I also want to flag June specifically. San Diego locals call it “June Gloom” because mornings are often overcast and foggy along the coast. This actually works in your favor at the Zoo. The cloud cover keeps temperatures comfortable through midday, and it usually burns off by early afternoon. June weekdays are among the insider windows visitors overlook.

Winter (December Through February): Surprisingly Pleasant, Fewer Crowds Outside Holiday Breaks

Winter is the most underrated time to visit. San Diego’s winters are mild by any standard, with daytime highs in the 60s and plenty of sunshine. Crowds are at their lowest, particularly in January and February. You will often feel like you have entire exhibits to yourself on a winter weekday.

December brings Jungle Bells, the Zoo’s holiday celebration with festive lights and themed activities (included with admission). It’s a nice addition, though December weekends closer to Christmas do draw larger local crowds.

Rain is possible from November through March, but here’s something most guides won’t tell you: a rainy day at the Zoo is actually one of the best times to go. I’ve heard this directly from Zoo staff, and I’ve experienced it myself.

Many animals become more active and playful in the rain and mud, and the crowds all but disappear. If you’re willing to throw on a rain jacket, you’ll see animal behavior you’d never witness on a sunny Saturday. I have a full guide to visiting San Diego Zoo in the rain if you want to plan for it.

Best Days of the Week to Go

The quietest days to visit San Diego Zoo are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Saturday is consistently the busiest day of the week. Sunday morning is a decent compromise if you arrive right at opening. The busiest periods of the year are holiday weekends and school vacation weeks.

If there’s one piece of advice in this whole guide that makes the biggest difference, it’s this: go on a weekday if you possibly can. Tuesday through Thursday are consistently the quietest days, and that holds true across every season. My best Zoo visits over the years have almost always landed on a midweek morning.

Monday can also be lighter, though some school groups schedule field trips early in the week. You’ll notice them, but they tend to cluster in specific areas and don’t significantly impact the overall experience.

Weekends are noticeably busier, with Saturday being the peak day in most weeks. Sunday mornings can be reasonable if you arrive right at opening, but by midday, the difference between a weekday and a weekend is impossible to miss.

That said, please don’t skip the Zoo because you can only go on the weekend. A busy Saturday at the San Diego Zoo is still a fantastic day. The Zoo is big enough that crowds spread out, and you’ll always find pockets that feel spacious. My family has visited on peak weekends plenty of times, and we’ve always had a great visit. The experience is better on a Tuesday, sure, but it’s good on a Saturday too.

Holiday weekends and school vacation periods are the busiest times. Presidents’ Day weekend, Memorial Day, Fourth of July week, Labor Day, Thanksgiving week, and the stretch between Christmas and New Year’s all draw heavy crowds regardless of which day you visit.

San Diego residents: Balboa Park offers Residents Free Tuesdays at its museums on a rotating basis. If your timing lines up, you can visit the Zoo and a free museum on the same trip. You’ll pay for parking either way now, so you might as well make the most of it.

Best Time of Day to Arrive at San Diego Zoo

The best time to arrive at San Diego Zoo is right when the gates open, typically at 9 a.m. Peak crowds build between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., then thin out again after 3 p.m. During summer, arriving at 4 or 5 p.m. for Nighttime Zoo is a smart strategy.

Be at the gates when the Zoo opens. This is my single strongest piece of timing advice, and I give it to every client I work with. The Zoo typically opens at 9 a.m. (check the website or app for your specific date), and the first hour to 90 minutes is a different experience than the rest of the day. You’ll encounter fewer people, cooler temperatures, and more active animals, as many species are most energetic in the morning, particularly big cats and primates.

Peak crowds build between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. This is when lines for the Guided Bus Tour get long, pathways feel congested, and you’ll wait longer at food stands. If you arrived early, you’ve already had two solid hours of relatively uncrowded viewing by this point.

Late afternoon, around 3 p.m. onward, things start to thin out again, especially on weekdays. During Nighttime Zoo season (summer), arriving at 4 or 5 p.m. is a legitimate strategy. You skip the hottest part of the day entirely and still get a full evening of entertainment and animal viewing.

For those who want an even earlier start, the Zoo offers paid early-morning experiences that get you into the park before general admission opens. These vary by season and availability, but they’re worth considering if seeing animals with almost no crowds is a priority for your trip and your budget allows it. Seasonal Events Worth Planning Around

Several Zoo events can shape when you choose to visit. All of these are included with regular admission unless noted.

Kids Free October: Kids Free October is one of the best deals of the year for families visiting San Diego Zoo, with up to four children ages 11 and under receiving free admission (the Safari Park and other San Diego attractions participate too). Weekdays in October are ideal because you get the savings without the weekend crowds.

Nighttime Zoo (Late May Through Early September): Nighttime Zoo runs from late May through early September and transforms the park with extended evening hours, live music, special animal encounters, and a festival atmosphere. Animals that are sluggish in the afternoon heat become active again as the evening cools, and the nocturnal species are a particular highlight.

Jungle Bells (December): Jungle Bells is San Diego Zoo’s holiday celebration in December, featuring festive lights, decorations, and seasonal activities included with admission. Fair warning: Jungle Bells weekends have gotten very crowded in recent years. If you can swing a weekday evening, it will be easy to manage the light displays with a stroller.

Earth Day and Conservation Events (April): Earth Day in April brings expanded conservation programming to San Diego Zoo, with special activities and educational events tied to the Zoo’s mission as a leader in species preservation.

Early Morning Experiences (Year-Round): Early morning experiences at San Diego Zoo are paid tours and encounters that begin before the park opens to the public, available year-round, with availability changing seasonally. The popular ones sell out, so book early during peak season. I break down every option in my guide to San Diego Zoo tours.

How Weather Affects Your Visit

San Diego’s climate is one reason the Zoo operates year-round, and it’s also why there is no truly bad time to visit. But there are weather patterns worth understanding.

The Zoo sits in Balboa Park, which is close enough to the coast to benefit from the marine layer but far enough inland that summer afternoons get warm. Expect temperatures 3 to 5 degrees warmer than what you’d feel at the beach. On a July day when La Jolla is a comfortable 75, the Zoo can hit the low 80s. The Zoo is also built on hilly terrain, so the combination of heat and elevation changes can be tiring, especially with kids.

Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions: mid-60s to mid-70s, generally sunny, with mornings cool enough that a light layer is welcome.

Summer means warm afternoons and strong sun. Hydration matters. The Zoo has water refill stations throughout the park, and I always recommend sunscreen no matter what the forecast says. San Diego’s overcast mornings can trick you into skipping it, and then the clouds burn off and you’ve got a sunburn by 2 p.m.

Winter mornings can be cool, sometimes in the low 50s, but it warms up quickly once the sun is out. Layers are smart. I’ve been at the Zoo in December morning fog wearing just a T-shirt, and it wasn’t fun until about 11 a.m.

Rainy days are genuinely excellent for Zoo visits if you dress for it. Crowds drop dramatically, and many animals become more animated. Pack a rain jacket and waterproof shoes, and you’ll be rewarded with a memorable visit. I wrote a whole post on what to do at San Diego Zoo when it rains.

A Few Practical Tips for Any Visit

Parking now costs $16 per vehicle for non-members ($8 for City of San Diego residents). As of January 2026, the Zoo charges for parking in alignment with the city’s new paid parking across Balboa Park. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance members still park free but must register their vehicle in advance through the Member Parking Portal. If you’d rather not pay, the Zoo runs a free shuttle on Saturdays from the Inspiration Point lot on Park Boulevard, where the first three hours of parking are free.

Wild Holidays 2026-2027 runs on select dates from November 27, 2026 through January 3, 2027. Specific event nights and hours haven’t been announced yet, but the Safari Park typically follows a similar pattern each year.

Based on the 2025-2026 season, you can expect Wild Holidays on these types of dates:

• Thanksgiving weekend (Friday through Sunday)
• Select weekends in early-to-mid December (daytime only, no extended hours)
• Nightly from around December 19 through December 23
• Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (shortened hours, typically 10 a.m.-3 p.m.)
• Nightly from December 26 through early January

On the main Wild Holidays evenings, the Safari Park stays open until 8 p.m. with festivities starting at 4 p.m. On the early December weekends, the park closes at its regular 5 p.m. time with holiday decorations up but no evening programming.

Wild Holidays activities and entertainment are included with any Safari Park admission ticket or membership. You don’t need a separate event ticket.

What to See & Do

The entertainment and light display lineup can change from year to year, but Wild Holidays has followed a consistent format. Here’s what to expect based on the 2025-2026 season. We’ll update it with 2026-2027 information as soon as it’s available.

The event is spread across several areas of the park, so it’s less of a single show and more of an evening stroll through various light displays, entertainment, and food options.

Light Displays

The highlight for most visitors is the light displays scattered throughout the park. The Bridge of Lights is a walk-through tunnel of light set to music on the Safari Walk Bridge. It runs continuously from 5 to 8 p.m. and is a favorite photo spot.

In Safari Base Camp, the Light Up the Holidays choreographed light show runs multiple times per evening. The Carol of the Bells Medley plays at 5, 6, 7, and 8 p.m., with a Jingle Bells and More Medley at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. The Wild Holidays Celebration Tree is also here, a giant Safari Park-themed tree with wildlife-inspired ornaments.

Over in Nairobi Village, the Nairobi Lantern Walk is an illuminated path with lanterns that dance to a musical soundtrack. Nearby, the Enchanted Lagoon at Mombasa Lagoon adds floating holiday lights and a lighted waterfall.

Further into the park, the Forest of Color along Arbor Walk illuminates Condor Valley in holiday lights. The Baja Garden in World Gardens glows with holiday cheer through the Southwest-style plantings. Several other locations are decorated with themed lighted trees as part of the Spirit of the Season displays, including Tiger Trail, Walkabout Australia, and Condor Ridge.

Entertainment

Safari Parker’s reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Wild Holidays is a fun one for families. It’s an interactive 20-minute storytelling session in Village Playground (Nairobi Village) at 4, 5, 6, and 7 p.m. that ends with a wintery finale.

Throughout the evening you’ll also find the Holiday Troubadour, an acoustic musician performing in Nairobi Village, and the Turtle Doves, a violin duo playing holiday favorites along Nairobi Walk. The Sweater Weather guitar duo roams through World Gardens and Walkabout Australia with their own spin on holiday classics.

Tune your radio to Safari Park Radio 197.2 FM when you arrive for a mix of holiday music that plays throughout the park from 4 to 8 p.m.

Santa

Santa is available for photos at Safari Base Camp on select dates throughout the Wild Holidays season. In 2025, his schedule varied by date:

• Main Wild Holidays evenings: Noon to 8 p.m.
• Early December weekends: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

He takes scheduled breaks throughout the day (for things like “Zoom calls with elves” and “toy inventory”), so check the posted times when you arrive. Expect a similar schedule for 2026-2027.

Holiday Food & Drinks

There are seasonal food and drink offerings throughout the park during Wild Holidays. The menu changes from year to year, but here are some highlights from the 2025 season to give you an idea of what to expect.

Standouts included the Cookie Butter Cinnamon Roll and Wild Holiday Churro Fry Sundae at Thorntree Terrace, the Arctic Blast frozen treat at Kalahari Cupboard, peppermint bark at Macan Market, and a variety of gourmet hot chocolates.

For adults, the Cinnamon Apple Mule cocktail on tap at Oasis on the Rocks was a popular pick, along with other craft cocktails available at several locations.

Tips for Visiting Wild Holidays

Dress warmly
This is the tip that catches visitors off guard the most. The Safari Park is in Escondido, inland and at a slightly higher elevation than coastal San Diego. Temperatures drop noticeably after sunset, and since the whole event is outdoors with a lot of walking, layers are essential. Bring a jacket even if the daytime weather feels mild.

Arrive by 3-4 p.m. if you want to see animals
Wildlife viewing is limited after 4 p.m. during Wild Holidays, and the last Africa Tram departs at 4 p.m. If seeing animals is part of your plan, get there early enough to ride the tram and walk the habitats before the holiday festivities take over.

Aim for weeknights between Dec 26 and Jan 3
The nightly run after Christmas tends to be less crowded than the pre-Christmas event dates. If you can go on a Tuesday or Wednesday evening during that stretch, you’ll have more breathing room at the light displays and shorter waits for food.

Wear comfortable walking shoes
The park is 1,800 acres, and even though you won’t cover all of it during Wild Holidays, the event areas are spread out. You’ll be on your feet for a few hours on paths that include some hills.

Parking is $20 per car
San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance members get complimentary parking by registering their vehicle in advance through the member portal. Preferred parking closer to the entrance is available for an additional $25.

Wild Holidays vs. Jungle Bells at the Zoo

If you’re trying to decide between the two holiday events, or wondering if you should do both, here’s how they compare.

Wild Holidays at the Safari Park is more spread out and nature-focused. The light displays wind through gardens, walking paths, and open spaces, and the entertainment has a quieter, more acoustic feel. It’s a nice evening stroll with stops along the way.

Jungle Bells at the San Diego Zoo is more compact with a different vibe. The Zoo features a brass ensemble, the Painted Jungle and Rainbow Forest light trails, a laser trail, and other attractions packed into a smaller footprint.

Both are included with admission, and neither requires a separate event ticket. If you have a 2-Visit Pass, you can do Wild Holidays one evening and Jungle Bells on another. Location and Why Mauna Lani Was Built Here

Mauna Lani is located on the Kohala Coast on the northwest side of Hawaii Island, about 30 minutes north of Kona International Airport, in one of the island’s driest and sunniest microclimates. This stretch of coastline blends lava fields, protected coves, and historically significant landforms.

Long before it became a resort, this area was part of Kalāhuipua‘a, an ancient Hawaiian aquaculture system centered around fishponds that sustained local communities and royalty. Those ponds, along with nearby petroglyphs, remain preserved within the resort grounds today, which I think gives you much more of a sense of place at Mauna Lani than at other resorts. If you take the e-bike tour, you will also see these sites and actually learn why they matter.

Rooms & Layout — What to Book and Why

The resort’s main building forms a broad arrow shape pointing toward the ocean. In reality, it was designed by its original owner to point toward Japan!

Spacious Guest Room Options

It’s really the view and location that differentiates each room choice.

• Oceanfront rooms sit at the arrow’s tip with unobstructed views of the Pacific.
• Ocean View rooms line the upper floors on each side of the arrow, with less full ocean views.
• Partial Ocean View rooms have angled ocean views.
• Garden View rooms face tranquil lawns and tropical landscaping.
• Mountain View rooms face the back of the resort and are the lowest-priced.

(I love an ocean view, but I also love resort dining, so I always recommend leaving enough in the budget to fully explore the resort. Here, you’ll want to take the tours and eat!)

My Oceanfront King on the third floor is spacious and breezy, with a sofa, lounge chair, and a wide lanai overlooking the water.

The bathroom design is clever, with two separate vanity areas on opposite sides, so there’s no bumping elbows at adjacent sinks. There’s also a walk-in shower, with a private water closet, but no tub.

Thoughtful touches include refillable glass water bottles, an empty mini fridge, a Nespresso setup, a ceiling fan, and a beach bag for use during your stay. It isn’t overdone with a heaving minibar or multiple dishes and gadgets, but it has enough for a comfortable stay.

If you’re traveling with kids, I highly recommend ground-floor Garden View rooms. They are popular with clients because the sliding doors open onto grassy areas near the pool or facing CanoeHouse, allowing parents to relax while children tumble around within sight.

These don’t have much of an ocean view, but I’ve noticed they are sometimes priced higher than rooms with an ocean view because they are so in demand for this ground-floor feature.

Some Oceanfront Kings connect to Two Queen rooms, which is a popular family room combination. An Oceanfront Suite can also connect to an Oceanfront Two Queen room to create a two-bedroom suite.

Because I’ve toured rooms and asked many questions to the reservations and guest-experience teams, I know how to match travelers to the rooms that work for them, whether you’re a couple who values privacy or a family that needs connecting rooms. Just ask.

Gorgeous Suites

We toured quite a few suites and specialty suites, should you require a full kitchen or multiple bedrooms for your group. The best thing to do is to let me know how many adults and kids there are, your budget, and any must-haves. I can work with the team to see what they can put together! Some larger accommodations are created by connecting rooms and suites together, such as the Oceanfront two-bedroom I mentioned above.

Beach Club & Pools

You do need to choose your Big Island resort carefully if swimming is a priority. The heart of Mauna Lani is the Beach Club, a protected, reef-sheltered cove with calm, swimmable water. This is rare on the Big Island, where conditions can be rough or rocky.

A Swimmable Beach

Mauna Lani was built around a swimmable section of the coast. The beach is great for:

• Casual swimming
• Floating and relaxing
• Families with young kids
• Beginner snorkeling
• Stand-up paddleboarding
• Canoe launches for resort activities

A small nuance: The seabed is a mix of sand and lava rock, depending on where you enter. I found the access alright, but some areas are sandier than others. Even with that nuance, this is one of the best swimmable beaches on the Kohala Coast. You may want to pack water shoes for the kids.

Pretty Swimming Pools

The resort offers several pool areas, each with a different vibe:

• Main Pool: Family-friendly, lively but not loud, with ocean views
• Adults-Only Pool: Overlooks the historic fishponds; quiet and peaceful
• Keiki Pool: A shallow, sandy-bottom pool perfect for little ones
• Lap Pool at the Athletic Complex: Great for workouts or quiet swimming

Cabanas and hālaus at both the pool and beach are limited, so reserve early if shade matters to you. We used both on sunny days and they were really nice upgrades.

In case you’re wondering if you can see marine life near the resort, the answer is yes. We saw a sea turtle on the beach, which is apparently not too uncommon.

Activities & Experiences — Connecting with the Island

Mauna Lani rewards guests who participate. You can certainly relax under an umbrella all day, but the real magic unfolds when you join the people who call this coast home.

Early one morning, I joined the Sunrise Canoe experience from the Surf Shack. Despite the name, it wasn’t dark when we launched, just that luminous Big Island dawn golden light. After a short paddling lesson, our guides led us about a mile offshore to greet the rising sun over Mauna Kea.

They explained how Hawaiians begin the day by honoring the sunrise, setting intentions, and connecting to the ocean that sustains them. It was spiritual without feeling staged and also quiet, moving, and deeply grounding. Some guests swam while others stayed in the canoe, watching the light change. We paddled back in silence, fully awake in every sense, ready to greet the day.

It’s one of the most popular tours they offer, despite the early start. Just wear sun protection, maybe shorts or water leggings, and a bathing suit if you plan to jump in.

Snorkeling by Canoe

The next day, I returned to the water for a guided snorkeling tour, again launching in an outrigger canoe. Everything you bring will get wet, so leave valuables behind and wear a UV shirt, swimwear, and a hat you don’t mind soaking. We saw sea turtles, octopus, rays, and tons of reef fish.

Our guides, Ben and Keanu, dove effortlessly to point out octopuses and eels while keeping the group together. On the return trip, a pod of dolphins rode the wake beside us, which was 100% the kind of moment you usually only see in nature documentaries. Even if you spot only reef fish, it’s worth it, but we happened to see so, so much.

E-Bike Tour & Cultural Sites

That afternoon, we switched gears for an e-bike tour to explore the resort’s ancient fishponds, lava-tube cave, and nearby petroglyphs.

The ride is easy and scenic, revealing how expansive the property truly is. Our guides shared stories about how these sites tie to local history and daily island life — a living classroom in motion. I kept my bike on the lowest electric setting because I was grateful for some exercise with all the outstanding food we were eating all day long.

Lei Making and Daily Workshops

Inside the resort, daily activities range from lei-making to hula classes. During my session, we learned how to string orchids using long hooked needles and heard about where the flowers are grown. It’s simple, meditative, and surprisingly satisfying, and one of the complimentary resort activities for guests!

The Truly Excellent Dining

I was seriously unprepared for how good the food at the resort is. Mauna Lani is an excellent place for foodies.

CanoeHouse

The resort’s signature restaurant, CanoeHouse, is widely regarded as one of the Big Island’s best dining experiences (if not the best). We feasted on Japanese-inspired coastal cuisine prepared by Chef Rhoda. You should order the Shokupan bread (fluffy Japanese milk bread), corn ribs, daikon salad, lamb chops, and fish.

The menu changes often, but every dish honors Hawaii’s ingredients and sense of place. The benefit of being in a large group is that we were able to try all of the popular menu items.

If you are staying at the adjacent Fairmont Orchid or Rosewood Kona Village, make a reservation to eat here. You can walk!

HaLani

We ate here quite a bit for the outstanding breakfast buffet and also twice for dinner.

Let’s start with breakfast. You can choose between an à la carte menu and a plentiful buffet. The latter offers an omelet station, a baked goods section (try the mochi donuts and malasadas), some gluten-free and salad options, boxed cereals for kids, lots of tropical fruit, local favorites like hamachi and ube hash, eggs, and a rotating house specialty pancake or French toast.

The à la carte menu has something you should order at least once or share with the table: ube pancakes. I couldn’t get them to photograph well, but the combination of the fluffy ube pancake with the ube syrup is just special. I’ve since tried a few versions near my house, and they’re not the same, not even close.

For casual dinners, HaLani turns into a Mediterranean menu. Order the Wood-Fired Bread Balloon and at least one dip (preferably a trio) to go with it. When you pop the air out of the balloon, it collapses into a moist, thicker, pita-like bread that is so delicious.

We also tried the kanpachi, chicken tagine, roasted cauliflower, zucchini chips (highly recommend), kebabs, and basically all of the desserts (I recommend the s’mores dessert we ate).

Ha Bar

The hotel bar is adjacent to HaLani. It’s really a lovely place to bring your laptop and work (yes, I had to do that) or pull up to the bar for a fun drink. It serves small plates, a burger, and pizza, but you can also order from the full restaurant menu.

Room Service & Casual Eats

One morning, I ordered room service before heading out for the day. The muesli, topped with ube, diced apple, and dried figs, was more like overnight oats—so good I ordered it twice.

The attendant was always cheerful and efficient, and while I did sign the bill (a small procedural difference from Four Seasons breakfast service), everything felt polished and friendly.

Downstairs, The Market is one of the best resort grab-and-go outlets I’ve seen. It’s huge with a coffee bar, refrigerators full of probiotic sodas, vegan yogurt, and even local gifts like honey and lava salt.

The adjacent deli prepares sandwiches, poke bowls, and sushi-to-order, perfect for a beach day or early departure. It had a nice selection of gluten-free options and other dietary needs. If I had one criticism of the resort dining, it’s that my poke was oversauced, but still good. I’d call that a win for how long we were there, eating every meal in-house.

Surf Shack

Steps from the beach, Surf Shack embodies Mauna Lani’s understated sophistication, with coastal dishes that are relaxed but beautifully executed. Lunch here is ideal for fresh fish tacos, salads, and tropical cocktails under the palms. They serve dinner here, too.

Culinary Creativity & Classes

During my stay, the resort hosted a private dinner for our Cadence group — a creative, off-menu showcase that highlighted the resort’s commitment to flavor and artistry. While guests won’t find this exact dinner on the menu, that same inventiveness runs through every outlet.

Even the Mai Tai-making class ties into the resort’s food philosophy. I learned they serve about 498 Mai Tais per day across the property, each crafted with local spirits and house-made mixers. Now I know how to make a proper one — though I doubt it will ever taste quite the same without the ocean breeze.

Wellness, Fitness & Golf

You’ll want to stay active with all of the excellent dining to take advantage of.

Spa & Wellness

The spa inside the main building has four treatment rooms and a small boutique stocked with skincare and gifts. It’s intimate rather than sprawling. Treatments are of high quality, but avid spa-goers should know there’s no large lounge area with a steam room or sauna yet.

Another spa space near the off-site athletic complex hosts group events or mini-treatments for meetings, rather than traditional day spa services.

Fitness & Sports

Two fitness zones serve different purposes. The main building gym offers cardio machines, free weights, and even outdoor TRX rigs.

About ten minutes away by foot or resort bike is a larger athletic complex with tennis and pickleball courts, a lap pool, and dedicated studios for group classes. You’ll also find more extensive cardio equipment and weights here. It feels more like a private athletic club than a hotel gym.

Oceanfront Golf

We took golf carts out to see the most picturesque holes. Golfers can choose between two championship courses:

• The South Course draws the most photos thanks to its oceanfront holes.
• The North Course earns praise from serious players for its design and challenge.

Both are open to the public, and the clubhouse bar and pro shop are worth a stop, even if you never swing a club.

The People & the Spirit of Ohana

If Mauna Lani has a defining quality, it’s the people. Many have worked here for decades. They know the land, the tides, the fishponds, and the cultural history that gives this place meaning.

After our bike tour, it was fun to buy a fresh coconut to rehydrate. This little stand isn’t there all the time, but not only did we drink some excellent coconut water, we learned the difference in how it tastes whether you choose an old or a young coconut. I love this kind of thing.

You’ll likely meet Auntie Anne and Uncle Dave, longtime cultural stewards who play a central role in the resort’s storytelling and cultural programming. Everyone in my industry who knows the hotel knows them, and they treated us to a special hula and ukulele performance during our visit.

This sense of continuity and pride runs through the entire staff from the water-sports team to the culinary program to the leadership behind the scenes.

And, There’s a Resort Dog

Her name is Mika, and she’s just lovely. Visiting kids obviously love her.

Who Is Mauna Lani a Fit For?

What’s awesome about the Big Island is that there is a resort for nearly everyone. They’re all different in their own fabulous ways.

Mauna Lani tends to resonate with travelers who want luxury that feels relaxed, grounded, and genuinely Hawaiian, rather than highly choreographed or overly formal. I’ve booked it successfully for couples, multigenerational families, and smaller family groups who value comfort, space, and cultural depth over flash. People in my personal network and family give Mauna Lani glowing reviews, too.

I’m going to address some FAQ here that I receive all the time to help you decide which Big Island resort might be a fit for you. As a disclaimer, I gladly book all four, but each has its pros and cons.

• Guests who are also considering Four Seasons Hualalai choose Mauna Lani for a more approachable price point and less ultra-luxury.
• For those comparing Rosewood Kona Village, Mauna Lani generally works better for families. We love Rosewood, and it has kids’ activities, but feel it’s more suited to couples.
• Mauna Kea is more of a contender lately, thanks to its renovation and fantastic beach, but I’ve booked Mauna Lani instead for couples who didn’t see the value in paying more and resonated more with Mauna Lani’s spirit.
• Fairmont Orchid is next door, with a more typical resort footprint and usually a lower price point. People choose Mauna Lani for the stronger culinary program and sense of place when budget permits.
