There are many ‘famous sights’ that we associate with the Dordogne, including Lascaux caves,Marqueyssac gardens, medieval Sarlat, castles such as Chateau Castelnaud and the prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley.

Yet it is the places that you visit outside these ‘hot-spots’ that will stay longest in your memory – the scenery, the peace, the coffee in a small cafe, the picnic next to a stream. The Dordogne is beautiful in the same way as the Cotswolds or Tuscany are beautiful – the way it simply makes you want to stay forever enjoying the quiet, the countryside, the scenery…

Some of the other best known highlights include the gouffre de Padirac caves and canoeing the Dordogne, with the most popular towns and villages including Bergerac, Beynac, Excideuil, La Roque-Gageac, Le Bugue, Riberac and Rocamadour.

The Dordogne Valley usually refers to the path followed by the river, and is towards the south of the department where it travels from east to west, passing through Bergerac and many of the other popular villages. The more northerly half of the department is quite a way from the river – but tourism in the department certainly doesn’t start and end with the river – be sure to venture north and south a little to discover the quiet but equally beautiful regions a little more hidden from the public gaze…

The tranquil river Dordogne from a canoe ….

GLIDING through the water in your canoe as you pass the turrets of Castlenaud on the river Dordogne, all you can hear is the splash of your paddle as you head downstream.

With the holiday season coming to an end, and the sun still warm on your back, now seemed a good time to take a trip down the river from La Roque Gageac.

The 14km route is a gentle three hour trip taking in some of the most popular sights in the Dordogne, but letting you see them from a completely new perspective. The river is wide and slow moving enough that canoeing is the perfect activity for everyone from families with children to young adventure travellers to retired folks. Anyone can do this.

From the Canoe Roquegeoffre base at Port d'Enveaux we were soon bouncing along the road on a bus taking us to the start of our journey, picking out spots we were soon to be seeing from a different aspect on the river from our canoe. At Les Pendoilles just north of La Roque Gageac we took charge of a two person canoe and we were happy that we had chosen to take the optional water tight container used to stow away our picnic rug and lunch, camera, phone and other valuables.

With a wobble we were soon off into the middle of the gently flowing river Dordogne, catching the occasional glimpse of a small fish in the water.

Soon after La Roque-Gageac came in to view, you can pick out small houses and the steep pathways that connect them as your eye gets drawn up the rock face and where in some places it is being held back with steel pins and netting.

And then a diesel engine fired up and with a full compliment of day trippers a wooden gabareslowly eased away from the quayside, with a guide on board telling people about some of the sights along the river and leaving us in its wake.

Paddling along with just the breeze and the occasional canoeists or kayakers for company, the easy rhythm of the river made for a peaceful time.

The morning sun made stretches of the limestone cliffs we passed glow with a brilliant white, while they reflected off the river in a dazzle and we caught the blue flash of a kingfisher as it darted across the water.

Swallows swooped over the water, dragonflies hovered then darted back and forth, with the occasional duck dipping out from beneath the overhanging trees on the riverbank, it was a simple, peaceful way to glimpse the nature around you.

Continuing on we pass the ancient English stronghold of Castelnaud standing high over the Dordogne valley. The houses of the village are in beautiful Périgordine style with stone walls, large deeply-sloping roofs or terracotta tile and wooden shutters. The imposing Château de Castelnaud houses a very impressive museum of war.

Next on our route are the stunning hanging gadens of Marqueyssac sitting high above the river in the heart of the Périgord Noir - 6km of pleasant walks on the wooded cliff top with lots of clipped box planted maze-like in the woods.

Continuing on we pass the Château de Fayrac situated on the south bank of the river. This was an English forward position in the Hundred Years War, built to watch over Beynac, on the opposite bank, occupied by the French.

By now the river was beginning to clear as lunchtime approached, just like on dry land, nothing can get in the way of bread and cheese and thankfully with no time limit on our trip, we were encouraged to pull up on the river bank and have a bite to eat.

We decided to charge up the batteries near the ancient port of Vezac. From the canoe a shady patch of grass was targeted and with a bit of a wobble and a clamber up the bank, a rug was rolled out and a restful hour feeding ourselves and the passing ducks. Well restored from our picnic we paddle gently on.

Approaching Beynac from the river with the castle and church towering above you see the village in a completely different way. The Château de Beynac is one of the most beautiful examples of medieval castles in France- never taken but temporarily "occupied" by Richard Lion Heart in the 12th Century. It defensively faces Castelnaud across the river.

When we see the final chateaux of our journey, perched on a craggy hill overlooking the river, it's easy to understand why Josephine Baker, the Vaudeville star, fell in love with Château des Milandes, calling it her "Sleeping Beauty Castle".

All too soon we arrive back at the canoe base where collect up our belongings and say 'au revoir et à bientôt' to the majestic Dordogne as it meanders on its way.

“Explore some hidden gems of the Dordogne”

To say this hotel is in a rural location is an understatement - it is deep in the countryside! But that gets you away from the hustle & bustle of the more well-known Dordogne towns & villages, & provides the perfect base from which to explore some of the less well-known delights of the Dordogne, and enjoy a relaxing holiday as well.

The hotel comprises converted old buildings, so is full of character. It sits in extensive grounds, with trees, shrubs, flowers, grassland. There is a beautiful large swimming pool & a large terrace alongside, from which the views are stunning. Plenty of wild-life to be seen too - birds, lizards, hedgehogs, whilst we were there.

Our bedroom was furnished in a pretty "country cottage" style and was comfortable, with everything you might need (including much appreciated tea-making facilities, thanks to the English owners!). The 1st-floor bedroom opened on to a small covered terrace, shared by the adjoining bedrooms; there were tables & chairs & it was lovely to sit there, with some shade, looking out over the surrounding countryside.

Weather permitting, both breakfast & evening meal are eaten outside on a large shaded terrace area. If the weather doesn't allow this, then it's the dining room, which is a charming room - spacious & attractively decorated.

Cuisine is French, using many of the products of the Dordogne. If on demi-pension, as we were, then it is a daily-changing set menu for dinner, but if there is something you don't like on the menu then the kitchen will of course offer an alternative - it is never a problem. The food was excellent - subtle flavours, nicely presented, delicious!

Steve (owner with wife Ann) is on hand to advise on activities in the area, places to go to, etc, should you wish. All the front-of-house staff are friendly & helpful.

Finally, the hidden gems of the Dordogne: nearby are the beautiful old villages of Cadouin, Monpazier and Limeuil (& more); steeped in history & well worth a visit. And not too far away are The Hanging Gardens Of Marqueyssac, also worth a visit. Explore these lovely places & then return to the peace & tranquility of La Salvetat, where you can enjoy the pool, sit & read, go for a walk in the grounds, whatever you wish.

So, comfortable hotel, in lovely grounds, excellent food, friendly/helpful owners & staff, lots to see & do in the area, all providing a relaxing & most enjoyable stay.
