INTERVIEW W/ THE MEGADREAD PROJECT

THE MEGADREAD PROJECT is no stranger to the elite space cadets, we received several transmissions from these dudes, and........they dont fail.

Always coming thru with a Dubbed out vibe , these kids paint that canvas with unique flavor and sounds that will shoot you through wormholes, and lyrics that are not from this world, or in other words..not your typical bullishh..

Huh... wha... ya dunno?? ya didnt do your homework? okay... lets run thru some q&a's and bring some tunes to light.....

1. state your names, (city) and location, and nationalities

Mega: Megachannel, but my mom named me G, most people know me as Lynden.. I'm a Los Angeles Native and Black in America.

Dre: DreDread givin to me by a well respected Ras, but my mom named me Andre. I stay in the hills boomin' , Inland Empire right now and I'm from Santiago Chile.

2. how long have you guys been producing for, and what was the first project you had?

M: Shit, I think we started in fall 2008 with this Dub track that Dre wrote and I rapped on. Another guy Jeremy played bass for us. It was called "Pig on The Road"..

D: Yea! Pig on The Road! (Laughs) Da Dread and I been producing for almost 4 years now, our first project WAS "Pig on the road", it was a pure reggae sound, this was before MegaChannel introduced da I to dubstep at the Larchmont, then MegaDread was born.

M: Yea our first "Dubstep" track was an experiment called "MegaDread" but every track put "Project" by default. It sounded dope, so it stuck.

3. how long have you guys been into electronic music?

M: I think I was like eleven or twelve. The single firestarter hadn't dropped but the video played on MTV, So I went and bought all their music looking for that tune, but along the way I found songs like 3 Kilos and Poison. That led me to other artists and producers like Fluke, Aphex Twin, Chemical Brothers, and a grip of other stuff that was coming out. It was kinda commercial, so I went deeper into the rabbit hole and found a lot of Drum n Bass and hardcore that was fire.

D: I've been into electronic music sin

ce my early school days back in 98, but it was the Ska/Punk sound that really had me vibin! As I grew older the reggae took over (champion sound)! (both laugh)

4. where do you guys draw your influences for your unique sound, or do you guys try to draw from instinct?

D: We do a bit of both, we focus on the root reggae dub sound which includes that swingin bassline, crackin snares, delayin instruments into space, reverbs, and most importantly soul. I'd have to say Jah Shaka is one of my main influences, that Dread takes it to the next level with dUb. Our sound comes from the root.

M: Reggae and Ska for sure, I also get random shit in my head sometimes.. Like bass lines or random melodic highs. Other dubstep artists too. I'd go further but thats just givin up a few ingredients. We have a little sound vault we sift through. (laughs)

5. you guys just recently played a show down in mexico how was that?

M: Man, so much love in the room. CZR and 20TEN showed us the most hospitality anyone could ask for. The venue was dope, the bartenders were really nice, and the people loved it. We vibed hard. At one point I looked over the decks and saw the whole room just jammin. It was a moment for us to look at all the studio time come into play, literally for about 100 people. It was our first international show too, so it was extra IRIE..

D: That was defenitely the highlight of the year for me, was better than I expected. There was a few technical difficulties but we got through, everyone was vibin, felt the energy, I've never felt a better feeling than being in control of the buttons! Selassie know.

6. what equipment and programs do you use?

D: Reason and ProT

M: Yup, usually Reason, and Pro Tools when we jam together. I've put beats together on Ableton and just sampled vinyl thru a mixer. When we mix together its usually CDJ, and when I mix at the crib I'm on Technics and this crazy old Rane mixer... Shit, if it makes a dope noise, we might use it. I've asked this guy (Dre) to record crazy shit just to use as a snare before.

7. what are you guys listening to now?

M: Right now, DUB for sure, Jah Shaka, Duke Reid, Lee Scratch. I'm always playing Gang Starr. Those guys never put out a bad album in my opinion. I got this new dubstep compilation that remixed old reggae tracks off my favorite label and a lot of good tunes are on that. Its really a mix of

things depending on how I'm feeling. I like Subtitles stuff, Ras G, I get a lot of cool stuff through soundcloud too. Kool Keith. I could go on and on. Kromestar and Sun of Selah crush real tough.

D: At the moment exactly some JAh Shaka dubbin in Brixton live ting. Been listening to a lot of Martin Campbell, Pupajim, King Earthquake, VIbronics, Selah Collins wif his "pick a sound" massif chune (check that), bunch of dub. Pon da dubstep the Kromestar be mashin sound, Silkie, Goth-Trad doin big tings, DEEP MIDI know watgwan! Irie dubs out there!

8. 3 favorite l.a. restauraunts?

M: Too many, Big Mommas and PaPa's is down the street and they got a slice of pizza that is huge. So after a burn session its good to hit that up. We always hit up this Chinese spot by this guys (Dre's) crib. They love us there, they know the Megadread. We actually had them deliver to the studio this weekend and the lady says "Oh, this is where you guys live?" (Both laugh)

D: Cant forget Lala's Argentinian grill, and El rincon Chileno too!

9. any new projects or shows on the way?

M: Constantly searching and making connections. I just sent a few beats of to get pressed on 12 inch, so hopefully that goes through. They may want us down in Mexico City soon, so hopefully that works out soon too. And as for beats, what is out is only a fraction of what we got up the sleeve.

D: Yea, always working on either production, or mixing. This upcoming track were working on called "Big Rig Chune" is in its mastering process and goin to be released on a big rig soundsystem for our next show! No soundcloud release for this one! Sorry . Nothing definite though, Mexico could be lookin good too. They like us down south..

10. what does your creative process,routine /ritual usually consist of?

D: Me, well the creative process consists of producing, mixing, mastering sound, mixing on cdj's, ganja burnin, listening, remastering.

M: Smoking heavy amounts of bud of course, testing frequencies, and a beer or two. Ordering chinese food to the studio, I think we gonna do more of that (both laugh). We always listen to some dub tunes before we start. We aint about rushing things. Just relax, ya know? Irie vibe from the get go.

11. what or who inspired you to make music (lil b or lil wayne , haha)?

M: Damn! Lil B makes me laugh, but for real though, I used to wonder where all the noises from electronic music came from. I knew this drummer in high school, and I wanted that guy to play for me so I could speed his shit up and make drum n bass. I met DreDread and he started showin me how to mess with frequencies and it made a lot of sense. I think the scene overall at the time too, because dubstep was new to me, and seeing people like 6blocc crossover. It felt natural, I thought to myself "I can do this." I had already been mixing drum n bass and hip hop for fun, and dubstep felt like a combination of the two.

D: Good question! A big part of my inspiration to start making music was my step father, his guitar skills were unbelievable to me as well as all other instruments. So I picked up the guitar and started jammin. I went to school for sound engineering, and met a lot of guys there who knew a lot about producing. I originally wanted to record bands, but then started wiring beats like a one man DUB band in Pro Tools.. (Laughs)

M: Yea, my sisters dad was makin rap in the 80s too, I actually used to spit little flows and all the older dudes would laugh all high and shit.

12. what else do you do? (art/paint/skate/etc)

M: I studied design in college, so I always do illustrations, and work with graphics and stuff like that. I used to skate a lot, but as I got older that shit took its toll on my body. I still take flicks of freight graffiti to see the old homies and crew up too.

D:Bodyboarding was always my favorite! Nothing like getting tubed up in a wave. Got my sector 9 longboard to cruise inna babylon, and a nice match of futbol. Sometimes I go to my neighbors crib and jam out on the drums a bit.

13. do you listen to the radio?

M: Does GetDarker Count?

D:Yes, when I gotta work for babylon, I have my shitty radio

14. what makes you feel most like a kid again?

M: Just being at a good party with good sound or when we are mixing a drop in one of our beats while producing. Thats always the best for me, that "AHA!" moment.. Its like Dre and I look at each other like "Oh shit, its on!?"

D: Yea!!!! Exactly. Bodyboarding too, its been a while!

15. is there anything you guys want to get off your chest? (my boss sucks, this ____ genre is shit, i really fucking love )etc?

M: Man, music is fun. We all come to this one place and we all come from different backgrounds and struggles; or lack there of, and we really just want to make people dance and have memorable experiences. I've met some of the nicest people because of music. I've made best friends because of this. I wont trash another genre really, everyone had their moment when they chose to make what ever it is they do. I'd imagine they had that same," This is where I wanna be" experience just like we did, so to each their own. If your music is good, it will speak for itself and people will like it.

D: True that, (Yells) BOMBACLOTTT!!! Ahhh thats better. But we keep it IRIE.. Sellasie know. Its like we in control, but somethings will happen that we can't. We just stay positive and show love and respect where it is shown to us.
