Powerball Winner Takes Lump Sum Payout of $429M Jackpot

A mother of 7 was the sole winner of the $429 million Powerball jackpot last May 6 2016. The winner, Pearlie Mae Smith, is a church pastor who rarely gambles. She claims she only bought a ticket to play the Powerball at a 7-Eleven store in Trenton because she felt compelled to play after having the numbers popped into her head.

On May 7, the family learned that they matched all six winning Powerball numbers. Moreover, Smith was the sole holder of the winning ticket.

They opted for the lump sum payment, which is $284 million after taxes. The winnings will be split in eights ways among her and her seven children. Ms. Smith described the experience as being inspired to play by “divine intervention”

The Tennessee family who won one third of Powerball’s $1.5 billion jackpot is being sued and the plaintiff is a former prisoner notorious for filing hundreds of lawsuits against famous celebrities. Jonathan Lee Riches aka “Jihadi Schitz” filed the lawsuit on January 25, claiming that he and the Robinson family exchanged letters while he was in prison. He then said that he gave $20 from his prison trust fund account and told Tiffany Robinson that she should use it for Powerball tickets.

Toni’s Corner is a small bait and grocery store on the approach to Branched Oak Lake – a Nebraska state recreation area. The store has been notified early Sunday morning about having sold a winning $2 million Powerball ticket.

The owner, Debbie Martin, could hardly believe what she saw when she received the notification. Branched Oak Lake is a small rural area that is mostly populated by farmers. “It would be so nice if it was someone local”, Martin said, as she hopes that the winner is one of her regular and local customers.

Debbie Martin will be receiving 1 percent of the amount of the winning ticket, which is about $20,000.
