I fell in love with these after seeing them on fellow bloggers. I was sad when they were sold out online (probably because it was on sale). I managed to add it to my wishlist after reading some tips on Effortless Anthropologie and it magically appeared as available a few days later. Here they are.
Little X is not so little anymore. He went from being a tiny 8 lb 7oz baby

to a 26 lb bundle of energy

Our family and home have been turned upside down but all for the best. A year ago we were busy preparing for baby X and now we are busy preparing for his 1st birthday. I've let a lot of things go around the house. I keep it clean but piles keep piling up. My dining room table has become the mail sorting area. In my efforts to keep the kitchen counter clear, the mail has moved to the dining room table, which hasn't seen any real action since August 2009 - we had a sit down anniversary dinner there. Nowadays all our meals happen in our kitchen/family room.

Finding inspiration

I've been thinking a lot about the Boys' rooms. We will have two boys soon. We've been a family of three for quite some time and we're ready to expand. I'm not sure if our bank accounts are ready for the expansion but we'll figure it out.

Our house is filled with bins and boxes. We stopped by Ikea last week and bought a new stand for our room. Our master bedroom is finally starting to look put together. Not bad after almost four years. I've finally parted with a bunch of stuff that I've been holding on too. I don't think I'll need my insurance bill from 2006. The shredder has been really busy.

I've cleared out Joshua's closet and dresser of his clothes that don't fit and have appropriately put them in away in marked bins. The bins are still upstairs so Chris can do one big haul. We don't plan on repainting the baby's room. I think blue will work for the baby. We don't plan on buying a crib either as we still have Joshua's co-sleeper. I did order these wall stickers to soften up the room.

and

We put the stickers below in their bathroom

I've been inspired by Brooke's blog and the room she created for baby. Over 90% of the room is used or handmade. I'm hoping to find a nice dresser or changing table through craigslist or maybe the Alameda Flea Market.

Test Run

I must have eaten something that wasn't right because I did not feel well on Wednesday. Diarrhea and stomach cramping. I called the advice nurse just to check in with them and she advised that I be monitored to make sure these are not uterine contractions.

I ended up staying the night as I had ketones in my urine, low potassium and PVCs while monitoring my heart rate.

I was told ketones are a sign of dehydration and they fixed that by loading me up with IV fluids. The fixed the potassium issue with potassium laden IV fluids and oral potassium. The PVCs are not easily fixable. I have an appointment with my cardiologist tomorrow and an echocardiogram. They'll monitor me and I'll give an update on what my doctor says.

I've been home the past few days and am back to feeling good. I haven't felt like walking or exercising as much. I should get back in to it. My blood sugar is looking good though.

Almost there

I've ben meaning to blog but have been occupied with so many other things. My life has been crazy the past few weeks.

Here's a quick summary -

Been to the doctor or diabetic nurse every week.

Confirmed that we're having another boy.

Been busy watching what I eat, keeping my carbs low and checking my blood sugar.

Started insulin. I'm up to 14 units at night.

Started preparing for the baby.

Busy working

Back at the gym

I definitely look pregnant now and not just fat. I've gained about 15-20 pounds. My diabetic nurse would love it if I stopped gaining weight but I just can't stop myself from eating sweet stuff. I haven't completely eliminated them from my diet but am definitely enjoying them in moderation.

I have found that my patience is growing thin especially when it comes to my family. I'm sorry! That's just the way I am. I play the "I'm pregnant" card all the time with Josh and Chris. It always works. I don't think I should be carrying that 30 pound storage bin up and down the stairs. hmmm.

I'm packing up Joshua's old clothes and toys and storing them in the garage. We're moving him over to his play room and the baby will be in his old room. This was his idea awhile back.

In the next few weeks, I'll be seeing my cardiologist and having an echo. I don't have very much to go. I pray and tell my body that my heart must stay healthy throughout. I know I'll make it through with visions of holding our new baby in my arms and many wonderful memories the four of us will have.

I really like

Now that we know we are having a boy and I've reached the 1/2 way mark. I've started looking at baby items.

We started a target registry for the basic items. I'm also in love with the following items at BabyGap. I'm hoping a friends and family event will come up soon so that I can pick they special items up for the little one. I kept some of Joshie's baby clothes that were close to my heart but gave the rest of his baby clothes to my friends who were having boys.

Here are Chris and my favorite pieces -
Just one extra one a day. I've been advised that I need to inject 5 units of insulin every night before I go to bed. I'm already a pushpin so what's one more. 5 units doesn't seem like too much.

The first few nights my heart would beat really fast. I was worried this was a reaction to the insulin. I called the nurse and we talked it over and it's just my anxiety over the insulin. I agree. I need to relax more.

This pregnancy has been eventful. From the time I saw the two pink lines up until today. This pregnancy has not failed to deliver excitement.

More Doctor's visits

I've been spending a lot of time at doctor's office these past few weeks. On Tuesday, I went to get my 2nd trimester echocardiogram and a visit with my cardiologist. I had an open order for a chest xray and took care of that too.

I took advantage of the valet parking at the hospital as it costs just as much as the parking garage but more convenient. I arrived early for my appointment and decided to finally get my chest xray that my OB ordered back in December.

Stanford hospital is a maze. There are patient wings at every end and then clinics in between. An employee help me find my way to radiology. I checked in and made sure to tell them I was pregnant.

The technician positioned two shields to help protect the baby. My OB assured me that this should not be a problem as I'd have to be exposed more than 300 times for their to have some sort of affect. I stand in front of the microwave all the time even though I know I shouldn't. I figure this wouldn't do too much harm.

I headed to the Echo Clinic to find out that I was an hour early for my appt. The hospital has free secured Wi-Fi and it was nice to be able to work while waiting. I had my afternoon snack and had a chance to rest.

Echos are never fun. I always feel awkward having the probe on my chest and around my breasts. My technician was very professional. I've had him before and he's very personable to knowledgeable. He's one of the few that I have had that take the time to explain what's going on. The worst is when they don't say a thing.

I finally saw my cardio (he was an hour late) and he said the echo is good and he'd like to see me in a few weeks for another echo and appt.

I'm really going to have to pay close attention to how I'm doing in the third trimester and call him as soon as I start feeling overly bloated, unable to breathe and super swollen. Let's pray that it doesn't happen. I tell my body all the time, "Health baby and a healthy heart." That's all I need.

Self-Inflicted Pain

I had an appt with the dietitian yesterday. I picked up my glucose meter and a diabetic education session.

I told her how I've been cutting my carbs all week and told her everything I ate. She advised that I was a little too strict. I should be eating at least 6 times a day or more. I typically wake up at 530, have breakfast at 7, she advised I eat every two hours and could have two snacks in the afternoon to get me through the long gap between lunch and dinner. I can have up to 30 g at breakfast and all my snacks and 45g at lunch and dinner. She advised that walking would help keep the blood sugar down.

I have to keep a food diary and track my blood glucose throughout the day. I have to poke myself 4 times a day.

Goal is to have BG < 95 when I wake in the morning and >100 and <135 and hour after meals.

I'm hoping I can keep the Blood Sugar down the rest of the pregnancy with diet and exercise.

My doctor says that it's up to my placenta and the efforts I'm taking may not be enough to avoid the use of insulin shots.

The dietitian mentioned that they prefer injection over oral medication because the injected insulin does not cross the placenta. Good to know.

For now, I'll do my best to keep my carb intake within the limits and will do a lot of walking on the treadmill. Chris brought it in for me today. It had been in storage sincew we moved in 2006 because we didn't know where to put it. It's new home is the family room.

Blood Draws for Glucose

I was at Stanford twice last week for my glucose tolerance test (GTT).

The first time, I had to drink glucola (a glucose drink sort of like soda) with 50 grams of glucose. It was bearable but not my favorite. It tasted like orange soda so it wasn't so bad.

I did not pass the one hour and was asked to come back and do the 3 hour GTT.

I fasted the night before and came ready to drink my drink. This time it was lemon lime and contained 100 grams of glucose. It was gross. The lab served it to me warm even though the label states that its best served cold. I gagged a bit when there was only an inch of liquid left. I was able to hold it down for the next three hours and was pricked an additional 3 times.

Unfortunately, the results came back abnormal and I have now been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I'm hoping that diet and exercise can keep it under control and I won't have to do insulin. I have an appointment with the diabetic dietitian this Friday.

Merry Christmas

This Christmas I wish for a healthy baby and a healthy heart. I say that to myself through out the day to help my body do exactly that.
We started our Christmas morning with Joshie waking up at 6:30 in the morning and asking if it was time to open presents. Chris asks him to put some pants on and brush his teeth before he runs down. To be fair, I brushed my teeth too.

Chris and I went to bed before he did. I thought he ran down to leave cookies and milk for Santa. I wondered why when I woke up at 11:45 last night he wasn't in bed. Jeff and him decided to make brownies and he wrote a note for Santa.

He did get the Lego Video Camera from Chris and me. Santa left him the Family Game Night Wii game. The Lego Video Camera was not on his original list. I'm guessing he added that after watching the Lego channel on the On Demand channel. He's downstairs right now making a movie. It takes 15 frames to make 1 second of video. The Lego video camera takes video and still pictures. When used with the Lego Software, he can make stop action movies. Cool.

He said he was really happy with all of his gifts. The PS3 will come from his grandparents. That's if he chooses to use his cash presents on that or save them for the rest of the year.

Here's some pictures of Jeff's lovely decorating
Let's hope for good.

We went to Disneyland for Joshie's 8th birthday. The boys convinced med to ride Star Tours and Indiana Jones even though it warns that pregnant women should not ride. I rationalized by saying that it wouldn't be any different than riding a plane. I was good the next day and only sat out when they rode Space Mountain.

We went to Dinner at Shakey's and chowed down on Fried Chicken, Mojo potatoes and pizza.

My appetite hasn't increased but I'm no overly concerned. The baby looks and sounds good and is growin appropriately.

I had my last appt with my Old OB on the 8th. She wanted to listen to the baby's heartbeat but could not find it so she decided to bring in the ultrasound. She found the baby right away. I was beginning to panic and then the baby appeaered and the doctor showed me his/her beatig heart. Beautiful.

Dec 16, 2009 - Chris went with me to my meet my new OB. Before we met with her, we met with one of her fellows. Dr. G was nice. We went over my history and what we are all doing to make sure things go well. Chris finally met Dr. A and he liked her too. Thank goodness.

I have to have my blood drawn on Tuesday for prenatal s screening, glucose screening and then schedule a chest x-Ray. I have to have an xray because I had a positive PPD once and haven't started the INH.

It looks like I'll be seeing my OB every 2 weeks. I have an echo in january and appt to see Dr. V.

I'm sure my insurance company is going to be busy processing my claims. Thank goodness we have health insurance.

Firsts

I had a fairly easy pregnancy with Joshie 8 years ago. My body was 8 years younger so it may have been a lot easier on me. I've heard and read many times that each pregnancy is different.

This pregnancy is definitely different. I've been nauseous since week 6 and lasts all day long. I feel like I have a fever but the thermometer says no. I get sleepy in the middle of the day. I feel my best when I'm resting in bed under the covers.

Life must go on. I still have to get up early and get the boy to school. I still have to work. Thank goodness I have a flexible job where napping in the afternoon is possible.

Our exciting and scary adventure

We found out 6 weeks ago that we're expecting. Josh is super excited that he's finally going to have a little sister (hopefully) or brother. Chris is insisting we'll have a girl and is now referring to the little one as a her.

Since we've found out, I've been at a doctor's office at least once a week sometimes two.

I'll be spending a lot of time at different doctor's offices because I'm considered high risk due mostly to my bout of postpartum cardio myopathy shortly after Joshie's birth. It's been almost 8 years since I was diagnosed. It didn't take me too long to recover but it was scary nonetheless. The decision to have another one took us awhile because I had to consult with my cardiologist various times to ensure that this would be a good time.

This blog will probably be filled with the details of my (our) experience on having a child after postpartum cardio myopathy (PPCM) and being of elder maternal age (35).

October 16, 2009 - bHCG blood test confirmed I was pregnant. Levels gave an estimate of 5-6 weeks.

October 21, 2009 - OB appt. Confirmed pregnancy with an ultrasound, estimating 7 weeks, 1 day giving an estimated due date of June 8, 2009.

October 28, 2009 - OB orientation appointment. Explanation of the recommended prenatal screening tests available. 3 tubes of blood provided

October 29, 2009 - Echocardiogram at Stanford. Results were within normal range and. Appt with Doc was postponed because he had an emergency. Nurse called me later to confirm that my results were good.

November 9, 2009 - Seasonal Flu Shot

November 10, 2009 - Appt with Nurse Midwife. Discussed my PPCM and what my options were and how I'll probably seeing them every 2 weeks once my 2nd trimester starts. I heard the baby's heartbeat, 171 BPM. Had my first blood draw for the prenatal screening.

November 12, 2009 - Appt with Perinatal Diagnostic Center. High Risk OB consulted with my cardiologist and current OB and recommend I deliver elsewhere. They don't foresee that I'll get really sick but don't want to take a risk and feel that it'd be best that I was at a hospital that had all my records. I left a message for my OB to recommend a OB at their other location.

December 1, 2009 - I'm changing doctors. I really love my current OB but I've been advised to deliver at another hospital where my cardiologist is and my current OB doesn't deliver there. I've decided to go with the High Risk OB I met at the Perinatal Diagnostic Center. She gave me her cell phone number. I called her and asked if she would take me as her patient and she said she would love to care for me. How can I go wrong? I'm happy I found someone and can stop worrying about a doctor who really cares. I had the Nuchal Translucency (NT) Ultrasound and the results combined with my first trimester blood draw put me at a low risk of having a baby with down's syndrome and trisomy 18. (CA Prenatal Screening Program)I have one more blood test later in the second trimester to complete the program.

The baby looks healthy and is moving quite a bit during the ultrasound. I'm happy to have made it through the first trimester and am trying to forget all of the nausea and dizziness but it's still lingering this week.

I stopped by Whole Foods on my way to work this morning to pick up some snacks to last me through the day. I've been working remotely so I have easy access to food all the time. Not that I eat all the time. :)

I picked up Clover Farmstead Organic European Style Butter with Sea Salt. It was $10.99 which is more than I usually $4 more than I pay for butter. It comes in a very nice reusable ceramic container. I was sold. I spread some on my french baguette and it is delicious. I do not regret my purchase at all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HWScenjdDgk/SpwxzgkoNuI/AAAAAAAAATU/3rEdqFXfRtY/s320/photo(3).jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376226816160184034" />

I also bought Non-Fat Chobani Non Fat Greek Style Peach Yogurt. He's always been responsible for firing up the grill. I take care of the marinating and he does the cooking. Chris believes that charcoal is the best way to bbq the Guam way. He'd love it if we had a half-barrel to use but without a blow torch it'll be hard to come by. He'll have to settle for the Weber.
I asked Chris all sorts of questions on how to get the charcoal ready. We decided I should buy one of those chimney charcoal starters. I didn't read the directions very well and placed the newspaper with the charcoal in the chimney. I was supposed to place the newspaper underneath. I finally added the newspaper underneath and lit it up. It took about 20 minutes for the charcoal to turn gray. It was very hot.

I marinated huli huli chicken and Guam-style pork baby back ribs the night before. Chris advised that I cook the chicken first because it takes longer. After pouring the hot coals onto the grill, I placed the chicken in the middle of the grill. I decided to place the ribs on the outer part of the grill to get that going and it ended up cooking by indirect heat (I think) as there were no coals directly underneath.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HWScenjdDgk/SpwHY6FILLI/AAAAAAAAATM/Y48mAwFK4L0/s320/photo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5376180179662548146" />

It took about an hour to cook all the chicken and I left the ribs on the grill for the same amount of time. I put them on baking sheets, wrapped them in foil and left it in the oven to keep warm.

The ribs turned out beautifully. They were tender, beautiful in color and were not charred.

Marinade Recipes

Huli Huli Chicken
6 pounds of boneless/skinless
4 cups of ketchup (I prefer Heinz)
6 cloves of garlic
1 cup of brown sugar
1 can of crushed pineapples including the syrup (20 oz)
1 splash of soy sauce
Throw everything together in a bowl. Cover and store overnight.

Guam Style Baby Back Pork Ribs
3 slabs of pork ribs
6 lemons
2 sprigs of rosemary
1/2 an onion
salt
pepper
soy sauce
vinegar

Place ribs in a big bowl. Rub with salt and pepper. Not too much. Add soy sauce and vinegar enough to cover the ribs (3/4 soy and 1/4 vinegar). I usually eyeball everything. Squeeze the lemon juice into the marinade then throw the lemons in too. Slice the onion and throw it all in to the marinade. Remove the rosemary leaves from the stem and throw that in to the marinade too. Throw the stem in too. Make sure that the ribs are immersed in the marinade. Cover and let it sit overnight.

Cod and Bittermelon

We were over at the Silvas residence and Auntie was making Pompano with italian dressing and bittermelon. It was delicious.

I attempted to re-create the dish at home. I made a few changes to the recipe. I used Filet Cod instead of whole Pompano.

3 filets of Filet Cod
1/2 a bottle of Italian dressing
4 cloves of garlic
Ginger
2 tablespoons of Soy Sauce
Bittermelon

I'm not the type of cook who measures all the ingredients. Most of the time I don't even try the dish before I serve it. I usually go by the smell to know if I have to add more seasoning.

I sliced the garlic and about a third of a piece of ginger. If I had to measure, it was probably about 3 tablespoons of ginger. I intentionally sliced the pieces big so I can avoid eating them. I like the taste of ginger but I don't like eating them. I sliced the bittermelon in half and scooped out the insides. I then sliced them about 1/4 of an inch and soaked them in salt and water to get rid of some of the bitterness.

I fired up the sauce pan and threw everything in and shut it tight with the lid. It was all down in 20 minutes. I just mixed it gingerly with a spoon to make sure the fish and bittermelon cooked evenly.

I ate it with rice and it was delicious. I don't think you'll like this too much if you don't like bittermelon.

Garden Project

We were at barnes and noble this past weekend where I cleared them out of their 75% off albums and refills. I almost did. I'm severely behind on my pictures. All of our pictures are digital. I would like to make a few albums for Joshie to chronicle the past 6 years. I was really good about it the first two years.

At the register, there was a copy of Backyard Homestead, the sales associate told me a little about the book and how it has helped her start her home garden.

I've been trying to figure out what to do with our backyard. My dad was kind enough to clear all the weeds and failed plants this past summer. Since then, I've been pulling the weeds and filling the brown bin with all the remnants. It's going to take a few weeks to get rid of the dead pile because those bins can only take so much.

I've started reading Backyard Homestead and am in the beginning stages of planning our vegetable garden. I'm definitely going to do raised beds as our soil is mostly clay. My list of veggies and herbs include

onions
garlic
carrots
celery
eggplant
spinach
cabbage
peas
long beans
rosemary
mint
cilantro

Chris will have to figure out how to keep all the critters out of the garden. We'll have to enclose it with some fencing.

Nike Marathon Run Club

I unexpectedly had a late night last night and didn't go to bed until 12:30. Very bad. I got up at 6:45 and was out the door by 7. I made it to Danville in good time. I did all the paperwork and found my way to the slowest running time which was 12:00. I told the pace leader that I normally am a 13 to 14 minute mile so I'll be in the back running and walking my way to 4 miles. I didn't realize that part of the run included a hill. It was a tough one. I had to walk up because my ankle began hurting. I ended with a time of 16+ minutes/mile.
I wished I did better but am happy that I finished. :) I'm hoping to improve over the next week.
I have a few runs this week to work on it.

185.4

I made a little progress on my quest to weigh less. I don't usually rely on the scale to help me lose weight but now that we have one it seems to be working than my usual see how my clothes fit way.

I've worked from home yesterday as the boy has the flu. I spent most of the day by his bedside. I managed to squeeze in a 30 minute workout last night using EA Active on the Wii. It was hard. I do not like lunges. We have been without a scale for a year now and have lived a happy life without it.

I was getting ready for work this morning when I thought I heard it call my name. I tapped it lightly and waited for the zeroes to show up. I hopped on and feared the numbers that were about to materialize.

186.7

It wasn't as bad as I imagined. I was guessing that I would be in 190s. Eek.

It may not have been as bad but still not good. My BMI is off the charts. I am obese. I should be between 104 to 129. 104 seems too thin so I'm aiming for 129. It is a long way from where I am today.

I'm sure I can do it.

I have my handy dandy journal where I detail what I feed on, the EA Active and jogging to keep me going.

Here's to a smaller me. Our interest rate started adjusting two years ago and our payments have been decreasing with each adjustment. We signed up to be considered for a loan modification/restructure. We completed the waiting period in May after making 3 monthly payments at 125% of our normal mortgage. Our mortgage amount was taken out and the rest put in reserves to pay or go towards the restructuring. We received the proposal yesterday and I was pleasantly suprised to see the proposed modification - 30 year fixed at 4.7%. We signed the paperwork and sent it back today. Our new monthly payment is less than what we were paying the first year. We're set for the next 30 years.

gLee

I loved it. We spent all day Saturday at Del Valle Regional Park enjoying the fair weather, good food and great friends. The girls then met up to host a bachelorette part for the upcoming bride. It was sooooo much fun.

Josh asked me what I wanted to do and i said let's watch a movie. I told him that we could go San Francisco. He got really excited and asked if I wanted to have Japanese food too, specifically shrimp and sashimi. I thought it was really thoughtful that he remembered what I liked to eat and of course he suggested that we have crepes after.

I spent Sunday morning doing laundry, cooking for the boy and packing. We then headed to the city to watch Star Trek in Japantown.

We had dinner and crepes afterwards, it was now clear that Joshie knew it was getting close to me taking off for my trip to the east coast. He asked me two more times if I could stay but he didn't push too much. When we got to the airport, he pulled my luggage all the way to the terminal from the parking lot. He turned to Chris and he asked if he could go to the store and of course he found himself a new eagle webkinz. I had to give in. I'm leaving him for 5 nights.

I promised I would look for one to bring back from my trip.

I'm enjoying my flight so far. I'm watching Confessions of a Shopaholic and am thinkng about watching Marley and me next.

ttfn
