whit asked:

I just got a chocolate lab on tuesday. I wanted to train her to duck hunt but how would I get a license for a gun or take her to get her used to a gun. Where would i start? I live a few miles west of Milwaukee Wisconsin. I can train her myself because we taught our terrier how to keep the mole population down. I just need help on learning where there is a field that i can take her too that is legal to shoot in.

Also she is a shy puppy what is the best way to make sure that she is not gun shy?

Thank you for any help.

Jodo asked:

We have had a lab/pit mix since she was eight weeks old and she was always shy and **********. We brought her everywhere with us in an attempt to socialize her and brought her to puppy school for both puppy intro classes as well as advanced training.
At 5 months old, she was attacked by a cocker spaniel while out for a walk. We got the dog off of her and checked her out, then finished our walk. Since then, she has become fearful of other dogs and her hackles come up, she wines, barks, and growls, and tries to get at the other dogs. If we are in a controlled environment, she does very well. If we are out of the house on a walk, or entering the PetsMart store, she goes nuts. We’ve worked with four different trainers and read all of Cesar Millan’s books.
Is it reasonable to buy a treadmill for her instead of trying to continue to walk her outside of the house? Other than this issue, she is a great pup.
We have a “free to good” home sign up at our vet, but no one’s called.

She’s a 9 month old spayed Lab. She’s very well crate trained and housebroken. She’s been on a specific feeding schedule for at least 6 months now.
We have a big, block-fenced yard. She’s always had a certain area of the yard where she would potty; far away from the house. We fostered another dog for a while who would just **** everywhere! Now that he’s gone, my dog still potty’s everywhere and anywhere outside! She’ll **** as close as a foot away from our patio! She never used to do this.
I’ve tried bleaching areas of the yard with a water/bleach solution, using vinegar and/or pepper. I’ve tried shovelingling other **** and placing it in the area where I’d like her to go. Is there any way I can get her to start going potty in the same old place she used to since puppy-hood? We have a fence, and I didn’t want to have to start leashing her up every time she wants to go out. Anyone have any advice? Please help! Thank you, in advance.
She is housebroken, because she doesn’t potty in the house; only outside! But not in a specific area anymore…
…and I take her for daily/nightly walks…

Five labrador retriever puppies are the world’s first dogs to have their sex selected prior to conception. The cell-sorting technology was developed by XY Inc. The black lab puppies, three female and two male, are part of a line of animal species that the company has demonstrated can be successfully artificially inseminated with sex-sorted sperm to achieve the desired outcome — female or male offspring.

To date, XY(R) Sex Selection Technology has been used to produce hundreds of thousands of sex-selected offspring of various animal species. Cattle, horses and sheep have benefited from this technology, which also has been successful in elk, domestic cats, the bottle-nosed dolphin and the Mediterranean water buffalo. In this recent case, though, these lab puppies are the first dogs born that have had their sex selected prior to conception.

XY Inc. holds worldwide licenses and patents to the technology.

The successful births of the lab puppies were a collaborative effort among XY Inc.’s research team; Dr. Greg Burns, DVM, owner of South mesa Veterinary Hospital in Fort Collins; and, of course, Morgan’s Chocolate Rose, the patient mom of the rambunctious brood. Rose is owned by Steve Huffman and his family. Huffman is a laboratory technician with XY Inc.

In the case of seeing-eye dogs, Labrador Retrievers, particularly females, are a desired breed due to their calm and gentle disposition and intelligence.

While XY(R) Sex Selection Technology guarantees at least a 90-percent accuracy rate in selecting for the desired offspring in which the technology has been rigorously field-tested and used in breeding for many years. The Labrador Retriever litter of sex-selected puppies was 60 percent accurate in delivering the desired sex, which was female.

A typical dog ejaculate contains up to 1-billion sperm and decreases rapidly after the first semen collection. In this case of the lab puppies, researchers were able to sort 46-million sperm on the first day; 21.5-million, the second day; and 27-million, the third day. Dr. Burns used the fresh sperm to artificially inseminate Rose three times over a five-day interval.

Each AI dose typically contains 100-million sperm, and over the breeding service several doses are used.

Rose, the mother of the lab puppies, was AI bred with less than 95-million total sorted sperm. Rose, who is a first-time mother, had no complications during the pregnancy or delivery of the five pups. Dr. Burns noted a typical litter size for a female labrador retreiver is five to 10 lab puppies with a mean of seven. This litter was no exception, with the litter developing normally over the typical nine-week gestation cycle.

This is an exciting time with striking advances in veterinary medicine. The area of molecular genetics has become one of the best fields of research with the development of genetic tests for dog breeders. So why, as a pet owner is this information important?
The following information is to help owners make responsible decisions to clean up behind their pets and avoid areas where irresponsible pet owners have not cleaned and shows the equity is the obligation to clean up after your pet.
Haemocanis Mycoplasma (formerly Hemobartonella canis) rarely cause anemia in dogs with normal spleen and a normal immune system. Clinical anemia can develop when a companion dog is splenectomized or when a splenectomized dog is a blood transfusion from a donor carrier. Haemocanis M. may be a widespread latent infection in kennel-raised dogs.
In fact, toxins, infections, and other environmental factors can cause congenital disease. It is also important to remember that not all genetic diseases are identifiable at birth. A good example is progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) in Portuguese water dogs (people with disabilities).
Unfortunately, there is no known cure for the disease. Always leads to death, although dogs often need to be put to sleep due to severe behavior problems, even before this, often less than one year after the onset of symptoms.
Piles of droppings attract dogs. Just for the mere fact of a dog sniffing the feces of an infected dog or a companion dog is suitable for spreading the disease.
Puppies that receive two affected genes, one from each parent carrier, will develop the disease. These are important points to consider for breeders and pet owners. The objective of farmers is the creation of healthy puppies, keeping the genetic diversity of the breed.
Unfortunately, there is certainly a symptom could be an identifier of the LNC. The symptoms can have many variations, depending on the breed, the dog and its original features. Thus, even within the same race, can not have dogs with very different symptoms.

Genetics (DNA based) tests come in two varieties. The first type is a test based on a mutation. These detect the exact defect or DNA mutation is the cause of the disease.
One symptom may be a growing concern periodic, and wander aimlessly. As the disease progresses, symptoms worsen and the time between the periods are shortened. Finally, the dog walks on a manic, unable to relax.

Being a good pet owner and pick up after your pet leaves behind. It may not be the glamorous aspect of pet ownership, but the owner is responsible to do so.
To the best of our knowledge of this particular manifestation of neuronal abiotrophy family (hereditary malformation of the nerve cells) has not been reported in the veterinary literature (personal communication from HW abiotrophy only cerebellar (hereditary degenerative disease of the equilibrium brain) has been described.
The purpose of this paper is to describe the state and to provide as much information as possible about your case. Since these hounds turn affected families periodically relatively independent, breeders should be familiar with the signs and symptoms so that early diagnosis can be done.
Dogbe are healthy carriers of the gene. Do not get sick, but still carry a copy of the gene that causes the disease in their heritage. If this dog is combined with a dog, the outside of the springs can not be sick, but about half will be carriers.

CEA’s disease affected dogs occurs when two particular genes (one from each parent) are connected. The transmission mechanism is known as autosomal recessive, or more simply a “recessive gene.
Four were killed once the problem is found. One was killed by “pain” as a very young puppy. Two of a litter of four cubs were put down after hit diagnostic studies in a school of veterinary medicine and sections of the brain, muscles and spinal cord were examined for the histologic diagnosis.
Toro, a dog with a “normal” genes and an “atypical” will never show a defect in the eye and is known as a dog carrier. Some spoilsport order places, shovel, and in dog parks. You’ll find a lot of dogs in a small place. If someone wants to enforce this rule on private property, which should be up to the individual owner.
