Tooth Fairy Day!

Tooth Fairy Day is a very special event featuring a visit from a beautiful tooth fairy, face painting by Happy Faces, storytelling, gifts and lots of magical fun!

To receive a gift, each child must check out at least 5 library items.

5. To Log your time, please click, "Log Books" and enter your sign in information.

At your next library visit

1. Write your name on a paper penguin and put it on the Winter Reading Club Wall!

2. Receive a coupon for McDonalds, a cool bookmark, pencil and sticker!
3. For each library visit, put a sticker on your penguin.
4. Try to read 15 minutes every day!
5. Record the number of minutes you read each day. If you skip a day, there’s always tomorrow.

6. Write reviews of the books you’ve read!

The Lackawanna County Children's Library has tons of activities coming up! We're staying busy this winter and we hope you can join us.

The Winter Reading Club: January 9th- February 18th: Warm Up with a Good Book! Read for 15 minutes a day and earn cool prizes! You can sign up online or next time you visit the library! Sign up online.

Read with the Welcome Waggers- Thursday, January 19th at 6:30 pm. - For independent readers ages 5 to 12 can improve their reading skills by reading aloud to a therapy dog. Register here.

Chines New Year Drop by Craft- Saturday, January 21st from 11 am to 2 pm. Stop by to make a fun Chinese New Year Dragon craft to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. For all ages and no registration required.

Mercy Watson Reading Hour- Tuesday, January 24th at 6 pm. Join us for an evening of Mercy Watson, the crime fighting pig, stories and activities for children ages 5 to 8. Register here.

Yoga

Hello Library Friends,

Today, we had two different kinds of Yoga activities at the library. Yoga is a healthy exercise that stretches your muscles, helps your posture, and helps you stay calm when you are stressed. In the morning, we had Yoga for Toddlers. We practiced different animal themed positions and animal sounds. We even practiced flying like a bird to help strengthen our backs and tummies.

In the afternoon, our instructor Becki, showed us different breathing techniques and we pretended to be bugs, trees and warriors!

Yoga was a lot of fun and it's an easy way to exercise. If you'd like to learn some more Yoga poses and techniques. Check out some of these books and movies:

Confetti Launcher

Hello Library Friends,

This past month we designed our own Confetti Launchers as seen on PBS's Design Squad. It was a lot of fun! We all had different ideas on what would work best with the supplies provided. We had things like paint sticks, paper cups, shoe boxes, rubber bands and more. We even had a huge bag of confetti!

Everyone tried different methods and based on the results, modified their design to make it work better.

eBook Workshop and other gadgets

First Night Essay and Art Contest Winners!

Lego Club!

First Friday at the Children's Library

Hi Friends,

Guess what?! This Friday, December 2, we are part of the First Friday Art Walk in Scranton. We are actually on the map! I am so excited because we are going to hear the story of The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. After the story you can look for the Polar Express train on the tracks in the lobby. Mr. Loven will be here to answer questions about the trains and how he got started. And the best!...we are going to unveil the new wall mural Miss Liz has been creating for the past 3 weeks! She has added some very special details to the wall. Come by and say hello to Miss Liz and see if you can find the special pictures added to the mural.

Come and stay awhile. Listen to a story, make a craft, write a letter to Santa, have some hot chocolate and enjoy the magic of trains! We'll be here from 6-9.

Flat Stanley

We recently had a Flat Stanley visit from George Bancroft Elementary School! We were very excited to have him visit at this busy time of the year. He helped put up our Christmas Tree:

We had him shelve some of our favorite books:

And he even helped paint some of the mural by the puppet theater

He had a great time and learned a lot about the library. We were sad to see him leave but was glad he was able to visit!

Thanksgiving and Scrabble!

Dear Library Friends,
Thanksgiving is almost here! Did you know that Thanksgiving wasn't permanently established as a holiday until 1941? Lincoln actually declared two Thanksgivings in 1863. One on August 6th to celebrate the Battle of Gettysburg and then again on the last Thursday of November? Scholastic has some great resources on the First Thanksgiving, you can travel back in time to the Plimouth Plantation or visit the History Channel for all their videos on Thanksgiving.

Just remember that the library is closing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23rd and will remain closed on Thursday, November 24th. We reopen on Friday at 9 a.m.!

I just received all the information about the annual First Night Scranton Essay Contest! This year we ask children in grades 3rd through 6th to answer in 100 words or less, "why you want to celebrate First Night in downtown Scranton."

For the first time in the history of the contest we are going to have an Art contest for children in grades Kindergarten through 2nd. Children can draw their impressions and interpretations of First Night Scranton Art Contest theme: " Celebrating First Night Scranton 2012 in downtown Scranton is fun because… "

Essays and Art are due at the Lackawanna County Children's Library by Monday, December 5th !

Help the flood victims in the Northeast by donating Children’s Books! The United Way’s Success By 6 program and the Northeast Regional Key ( a division of Pennsylvania’s Office of Child Development and Early Learning) are collecting new and delicately used books for children infant through school age (13 years old) to be given to the child care programs and families who were impacted by the recent flood.
