Road Rage: Senseless Maiming of 18 year old University Student

Two Kuwaiti youths hit an 18-year-old university student with a fire extinguisher, permanently deforming his face and blinding him in the left eye, reports Al-Shahed daily.

The victim was traveling in a car with his mother and sister and had requested the two youths to give him way. The Kuwaiti youths didn’t like being told what to do and assaulted the student.
When the student’s mother went to Al-Zour Police Station to file a complaint, she was shocked on learning that a police sergeant reported the incident as a ‘two-car collision.’

Sources say the two youths were arrested but soon released on KD 100 bail each due to the intervention of an influential person.

The victim’s father says securitymen did not conduct necessary investigations.

LWDLIK - This was in the Arab Times today. I am shocked and horrified that this;
a) Happened at all.
b) Authorities dealt with it so appallingly.
c) That any persons of 'influence' would sully their hands with this and/or not want justice for the victim.

Intelligence Study Links Low I.Q. To Prejudice, Racism, Conservatism

Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes.

The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.

I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists.

Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study's lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience.

Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature "structure and order" that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice," he added.

Dr. Brian Nosek, a University of Virginia psychologist, echoed those sentiments.
"Reality is complicated and messy," he told The Huffington Post in an email. "Ideologies get rid of the messiness and impose a simpler solution. So, it may not be surprising that people with less cognitive capacity will be attracted to simplifying ideologies."

In any case, the study has taken the Internet by storm, with some outspoken liberals saying that it validates their suspicions about conservatives and conservatives arguing that the research has been misinterpreted.

Kuwait Bans Smoking in Public Places

KUNA - Kuwait issued Monday a blanket ban on smoking in public places including hotels, restaurants and cafes.
Commerce and Industry Minister Amani Buresli ordered the ban upon recommendations from Health Ministry.
Minister Buresli said the ban covers all forms of smoking including water pipe.
The minister asked restaurants, cafes and entertainment places to allocate well-isolated places for smokers.
Inspectors will monitor all public places to ensure full respect for the new rules, Buresli said.
She also warned that the ministry will take puntive and legal actions against violators of the ban.
The Ministry of Health also banned smoking in shopping malls, schools, universities, hospitals, airports, government offices, sports clubs, libraries, recreational places and other public places.
The two ministries urged all Kuwaiti citizens and foreign residents to help enforce the ban that aims to protect public health.

Lindsey Our Awesome Friend

Our dearest friend Lindsey is very ill with COPD. Her mother died of COPD and Lindsey's condition has been deemed untreatable. Her breathing capacity diminishes weekly.

I would just like her to know how much we love her (she knows who 'we' are) for her kind sweet thoughtful nature, her wonderful photography, her delicious baking, her wicked sense of humour, her words of wisdom and her lovely smile that makes her eyes twinkle.

We hope and pray for her situation to improve.

Such a caring lady, wife and mother. As a social carer Lindsey used to foster many children in the UK and touched the children's lives in a such a very positive way. She is also step mother to six kids and loves them all dearly.

It is rare to find people of such calibre and you my darling are such a blessing to us all. I know why we met, as do you, and you know I will keep my promise to you. Love you Linz..

A Midsummer Night's Dream at the British Embassy Gardens

In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the British Embassy and ASP & CO Ltd in association with Al Ahli Bank of Kuwait is delighted to announce the forthcoming production of William Shakespeare’s top comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream which will take place in the Embassy Garden at 19.00 on 15 and 16 March 2012.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a ONE WORLD Production bringing together multi-cultural performers of Kuwait. The running time will last approximately 1.5 hours, without an interval and is a show packed with dance, song and fun, a ‘Shortcut to Shakespeare’ and his wonderful world of words. Set in Athens, in 1930, at a reception given by Egeus, to celebrate Duke Theseus’ forthcoming wedding to Hippolyta, the action quickly moves to an enchanted wood in Ancient Greece with its comedic chaos and happy conclusion. This production is suitable for all ages. Refreshments will be available to purchase after the production.

Tickets

· A VIP package is available for limited seating at a charge of KD25 per person, please contact Events Manager on 97276606 or kuwait.events@fco.gov.uk for further information.

· Charge is KD15 per adult and KD10 for children.

· The Box Office is at the Reception of the Viking Club, Radisson Blu Hotel on the Gulf Road. The Viking Club will cease selling tickets from 09.00 on 12 March after which please contact Events Manager on 97276606 for further information.
