Visiting temple in Kota Kinabalu

I went to Gurdwara, or Sikh temple in Tanjung Aru about two years ago for an event but did not take pictures because I was rushing.

Recently, another event held at the outside of the temple and I decided to have a look inside the prayer hall.

I am sure most of Kota Kinabalu city folks never visited this building, located near SM Maktab Sabah (Sabah College Secondary School). If you have free time, try to have a look at this building which has been added in city tour package by some of the travel agents.

Those who are planning to travel to Sabah and have a few hours in the city centre before traveling back, try to stop at this temple because it is on your way to the airport. The location is about 5 minutes from Airasia Airport and 7 minutes to Kota Kinabalu International Airport (please consider, I am a slow driver).

Ok, let me explain a little bit about this religion. Please correct me if I'm wrong ya... Sikhism is a monotheistic religion founded in India’s Punjab region and based on the teachings of Guru Nanak and his successors. The Sikh philosophy focuses on the equality of all people, and is said to be summed up by Guru Nanak as, “Realization of Truth is higher than all else. Higher still is truthful living.”

The Sikhs are extremely gracious in welcoming visitors and helping them to understand the Sikh religion and customs. Visiting a Gurdwara, the Sikh meeting place for worship, is open to everyone – regardless of beliefs, caste or color.

Based on my experience, here are some guidelines to follow for a respectful visit, and notes about what to expect.

Dress modestly.
Like any other sacred space, you will want to plan on dressing modestly when visiting a Sikh temple. It’s best to wear loose-fitting clothing as you may sit with others on the floor in the main prayer hall.

Ask permission before entering.
The Gurdwara in Tanjung Aru doesn't have reception area for visitors, but there will be people at the hall, outside the temple. Ask them about your interest to have a look at the temple. They are very friendly and helpful.

Cover your head.
Everyone must cover their heads before entering the Gurdwara. Sikh men customarily wear turbans, while Sikh women typically wear head scarves as part of their traditional dress. If you do not have a head covering, don't worry they will let you borrow one when you arrive at the temple.

Remove your shoes and wash your hands and feet.
It is customary to remove your shoes before entering the prayer building.

In the main prayer hall, be aware of the Guru (priest).
Entering the main prayer hall, I did not see anyone praying at that time because they were busy with the event happening outside. But someone guide us and explained about the temple and its history, how it became an important part of the British prisoners of war during the WW2. According to her, if the Guru (priest) is there, you must respect him by walking quietly.

I personally had enjoyed learning a bit about their traditions in visiting a Gurdwara. If you have the opportunity, a visit to a Sikh temple is a rich experience.

Picnic at Simpang Mengayau

Who doesn't love a picnic!

On our final day of office trip to Bavanggazo Longhouse, we decided to bring the kids for a barbeque picnic at Simpang Mengayau beach. We woke up not so early in the morning, breakfast and get some fresh fish from Kudat market.

The ladies did the marinating, while the dudes did the barbeque.

The kids actually has repeatedly been asking to go to the beach. They wanted to play with the sand.

I must say Simpany Mengayau beach has the potential to be the main attraction for the locals and also tourists but there must be a continuous maintenance of the place. What a beautiful place with white sand but sadly there is no proper toilet and garbage bins. People are throwing plastic everywhere, and I did not see it is heading to a right direction.

I personally love picnic because we did it very often when I was small. I do not agree Simpang Mengayau to be commercialized because it will prevent the local from accessing the place like they used to be. I just want the local authority to maintain the cleanliness of the place and open it for the public as usual.

When we were at the beach, I saw many local brought their family because it was school holiday. Children were playing with the sand, teenagers helping their parents preparing the food and the rest were just relaxing and walking around enjoying the hot breeze.

If you think preparing for a picnic sounds like too much of a hassle, think again. With a little bit of planning, you can pull off a picnic to make a day with your kiddos extra memorable. Like what we did during this trip, he only things we prepared were the chili, ketchup, plates and picnic mat. Tadaaa...

If you are planning to come here with your children for a barbeque picnic and have extra time to do preparation, do not forget to bring old blanket (to cover whatever you want to cover), napkins (you will need this if you bringing children to wipe them up), spoon, knife, wet wipes, lot of water, sun screen, bug spray and plastic bags for your waste. Please do not leave your rubbish behind. Respect the mother nature!

A night at an authentic longhouse, Bavanggazo

If you love the sun but wanting to have a traditional touch of Borneo in your short gateway, I am recommending Bavanggazo Long House as your homestay destination. It is less than 3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu city (for slow drive like me) but only about 20 minutes to the Tip of Borneo.

If you only have 1 day and 1 night to spend, choosing this particular authentic destination is like killing two birds with one stone. Visit the beach during the day and learn about the Rungus traditional at night. Book a night stay at the long house, and ask the operator to prepare 'kampung style' dinner and breakfast. You only spend about RM35 per head (half price for children) for the package. But if you wish to have traditional performance at night, they are charging around RM65 per head.

Two weeks ago, during the Chinese New Year holiday my colleague Eydah arranged a road trip to Bavanggazo Long House located at Tinangol near Kudat. At first, they supposed to climb Mount Kinabalu but cheated by unregistered agent. So, they changed the plan and I tagged along. Yay... I brought my son Qayyum and my sister in law (Adeq). My husband was busy so he did not follow this trip.

It was me, Qayyum, Adeq, Eydah, Sue and her daughter Sofi, Amy and her sons Micah and Dante, Aniq, Murib and Aisyah.

We started our journey at 10am from Kota Kinabalu, stopped at Kota Belud for brunch and checked in at Bavanggazo Long House around 2pm.

SO SAD... Only mummy and Qayyum. Daddy is busy working :(

After checked in, we headed to the Tip of Borneo (about 30 minutes slow driving) for sight seeing. I must admit that Aniq took a number of great pictures. Yeahhh... Planning to post it into my Facebook soon so that I can show off to the other munkies in the office who refused to join us.

We were excited with the short trip and have been planning to a more adventurous trip next year. I suggested waterfall, but when someone mentioned the leech, I was loke ewwww.... I don't think I can stand leech climbing up to my foot and sucking my sweet blood. Oh NO WAY!

I have to think harder next year. Choose the best destination for another office trip. Must be safe environment for the children too.

Okey, back to this trip. I love the breeze, great company and wonderful moment shared. Five stars, man!

Time to go home (the long house)

Should I tell you the real story or not? Hmmm... ok, actually I when I drove back to the long house I was busy talking with Adeq (she was holding Qayyum at the passenger seat). Cut the story short, I couldn't find the junction to the long house because it was too dark. Even worst, my phone battery drained. Luckily I found a policeman at the side of the road and he gave me the right direction. I thought I have passed the junction but actually it was just another 10km ahead.

Arrived at the long house around 7pm, showered and DINNER TIME! Most of the dishes were my favourite. We were served with rice with fried fish, Rebung, Pakis, Sayur Manis (go figure).. cant remember all but the bamboo table was full of delicious food.

After dinner, we have to find our own entertainment because we did not buy the performance package. Se took the Manggunatip bamboo, play with our own rhythm and asked whoever dared to try stepping into the most dangerous dance. LOL. No worries, everybody survuved. Ngeh :D

After putting so much effort in the Manggunatip game, we played Batu Seremban while the kids were playing with their legos. My son slept early.

At first, we planned to sleep in the room but since there were a lot of 'gossip' and 'theory', also current issues discussed, we carried all the mattress out of the room and slept at the living room. It was long so we have more than enough space to rest in our own style.

Some munkies slept early, but I remember at 2am Murib, Aniq, amy and I were still talking about life and world crisis. At 3am, almost everyone were awake and continue chit-chatting. I was not sure what time we slept but we woke up at 7am to get ready for the breakfast at 8am.

We headed to the beach for a half-day barbeque and go back to Kota Kinabalu around afternoon after Zohor prayer.

Roadtrip to Kudat

Dear friends, so sorry for the long silence. I delivered my first child, Qayyum Mikhail (We are calling him Q) on March 8th 2014 (same day with the MH370 tragedy) and I since the first day I hold him in my hands all I want to do is to spend my precious time with him.

This year is not a traveling year for us because packing baby's stuff can be hassle. Wait until Q able to walk and carry his own backpack.

However, a roadtrip is something that we can do.

On Q's 7th month birthday, hubby Carl and I decided to have a roadtrip to Kudat. Carl said he never been to Kudat, and he really want to see the famous Tip of Borneo. I booked a room at Kudat Golf & Marina Resort for one night and requested them to bake a cake (decided to celebrate Carl's belated birthday). No more staying at backpackers until baby is 4 years for safety reason.

We started our journey from home at Telipok in the morning, arrived Marina about three hours later. We had lunch at the hotel after checked in and had a short nap as we are planning to visit the Tip of Borneo.

We left Marina for Tip of Borneo around 3pm after having tea at the poolside. Carl was shocked when the staff delivered a cake on our table. I didn't told him about the cake because it suppose to be a surprise treat to both of my favorite boys in my life. The fruit cake was yummy!

After having three slices of the delicious cake I let Carl to hold the baby and I drove to the Tip of Borneo. We used GPS and Waze. Arrived a few minutes before 4pm, and the weather was awesome! We walked from the entrance to the end as vehicle are not allowed to enter.

Tip of Borneo in English is locally known as Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, while the local natives called this place Simpang Mangazou. It is known as is the northernmost tip of Borneo. The tip marks the meeting point of the South China Sea and Sulu Sea.

There are a number of backpackers at the Tip of Borneo. Tommy's Place is one of low price accommodations available at the Tip of Borneo. Some day, I will try their little tiny resorts because many people say it is suitable for budget traveler.

After about two hours there, we headed back to Kudat town and made a final stop at Kudat Esplanade for dinner. We spent around RM35 for fresh seafood. We had rice with butter prawn, steam fish and vegetables.

The nightlife in Kudat is located at the Esplanade where you can try variety of food, mostly seafood until late night. That's all. Continue your journey to discover Kudat during the day.

We slept quite early because Carl wanted to swim at the pool in the morning.

We had our breakfast at the hotel's restaurant. There was no buffet, but we had to choose whether local or American breakfast. I took local Nasi Lemak while Carl ordered the American breakfast. He prefer bread and eggs.

Overall, our roadtrip was relaxing and we enjoyed it. Everything was perfect.

Airasia zero fair is back, but I didn't purchase any

Traveling has always been my passion, and almost every year I will purchase at least one return ticket during Airasia zero fair. But this year, I did not buy any.

I am currently 38 weeks pregnant (my first baby) and I want to plan my traveling schedule when my precious is about 1-year-old, just to avoid any problem involving health or documentations. Husband and I are excited for the baby and we have been discussing about traveling with him (yes, its a baby boy :) ) when he is about to start walking.

No regret at all. At least, we can focus on our savings and the baby.

We won't be flying for the next 12 months (will see. LOL.), but we will be traveling around Sabah by car (hopefully). Road trip is another activity that we should consider. It's going to be fun especially when the baby is going to be our priority. At least, we learn how to travel with toddler.

MASwings launched 1 Million Seats on Sale campaign

Taipei, perfect destination for shopping

Shaped roughly like a sweet potato, Taiwan is home to more than 23 million people and is one of the most densely populated places in the world.

Besides its crowded cities, Taiwan is also known for steep mountains and lush forest. Despite Taiwan being an island nation no bigger than 36,000 sq km, it boasts some very impressive scenic sites, and Taipei is a vibrant centre of culture and entertainment.

The island is also a centre of Chinese pop culture with a huge and vibrant entertainment industry. Taiwanese cuisine is also highly regarded.

Last July, I had the opportunity to cruise (via Star Cruises Superstar Aquarius) from Taiwan to two islands at the southern part of Japan - Naha and Ishigaki. It was fully sponsored by Genting Hong Kong, as a familiarization trip before the ship to homeport in Kota Kinabalu. I spent two nights and three days at Taipei. I describe Taipei as Taiwan's top shopping district.

Shopping venues in Taipei include department stores, malls, underground transit malls, night markets and shopping districts. Shopping malls in Taipei are mainly concentrated in the Daan and Xinyi districts, though they can be found all over the city. Most malls are located along Zongxiao East Road or in the newly-developed Xinyi District (Taipei City Hall Station).

Hoteliers and restauranteurs in Taiwan are even making their accommodations and dining to be Muslim-friendly. Taiwan can be very convenient when it comes to finding good food and daily activities without hassle.

Let's talk about shopping in Taipei!

At the first day we arrived Taipei, it was around 10am. We took chartered bus from the airport to Westgate Hotel, located at Zhonghua Road of Wanhua District. I did a bit of research on shopping spots so I know a few place. Four of us took train to Wufenpu. Many reviews on this place saying it is a shopping heaven where they sell wholesale clothes, accessories, bags, shoes at very cheap prices. Guess what? I only bought two pairs of pants for my husband because they don't have my 'curvy' size. LOL.

Westgate Hotel has comfortable and cozy room. I stayed alone but their queen bed rooms were full. So I had the opportunity to change bed anytime I like. The best part is the free Wifi and super fast connection. Loving it!

I must say that Westgate Hotel is a convenient location for shoppers like me. Shops, malls, restaurants and food stalls are everywhere. I regret spending money at Wufenpu because I can find everything here from around 6pm to 12 midnight.

Both pictures (above) I took at Wufenpu, where they just started operating their shops. I personally think nothing interesting here, unless you have super slim size. Its your heaven.

After about two hours here, we took taxi (fare about RM25) back to the hotel and continue shopping around Zhonghua Road. More choices and fun. I saw a group of people protesting Taiwanese government peacefully at the roadside, I also saw a group of teenagers doing their K-Pop dance... everything were happening in one place. Crowded but I felt safe.

I bought six pairs of very good quality of sandals (price around RM25-RM35 per pair) for the girls at home, one pair boots and one pair shoes for me. I also bought two leather wallets for bother and my dad, t-shirt for my sister and handbags for me and cousins.

If I have a second chance to come back here, I definitely will stay at the same area and shop in this place.

The second day in Taipei we headed to Keelung Port to start our Star Cruises journey to Japan, and came back to Taipei for another round of shopping but I did not buy many things because I spent more on food. At the final night, we stayed at Novotel Taipei near the airport to ensure we won't miss our flight on the next morning.

Novotel Taipei id a good place for transit, but not a suitable place to stay if you want to enjoy the real feel of Taipei. This hotel has daily shuttle bus services, so you can go to the city centre if you have extra time before your next flight.

First time wearing Kimono

I’ve always wanted to go to Japan. I've always dreaming about Tokyo, Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka, Sakura, Kimono, fashion of Harajuku and so on. Reading my friend's tweets, blog posts and FB status about Japanese people and their culture makes me want to go even more.

Last week, I was given the opportunity to do a write-up about Star Cruises trip from Keelung (Taiwan) to Ishigaki and Naha of Japan. July is not the best timing to find Sakura, especially in that part of Japan. However, I did not really care about it but accept the offer and flew to Taipei with the group and finally crossed the East China Sea to Okinawa Island.

At Naha, we visited Gyokusendo Cave, one of main attraction in the island. I saw a small booth offering photo service, where you can wear their Kimono for 500 Yen. I took the offer and this is me, first time wearing a Kimono, Okinawa style.

Hopefully one day, I will have the chance to visit Japan mainland...

A night at Kiram's Village, Kundasang

My two days and one night stay at Kiram's Village with my husband, brother and his wife was memorable and full of love.

At 6.30am (from home at Telipok), we proceed with overland journey on sealed road to Kundasang and had a spectacular view of the beautiful ridges, beautiful rolling hills, lush green forests and rocky shorelines.

We arrived Kundasang Town before 9am, and bought four tickets to enter Kundasang War Memorial (RM2 per pax). I have been here a few times, but Kundasang War Memorial is one of MUST VISIT tourist destinations here that you should not ignore. Reading information about the brave Australian and British Prisoners of War who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau during World War II, it reminds us the story of the per-independence and appreciate what we have today.

After an emotional visit to Kundasang War Memorial, we headed to Desa Cattle Dairy Farm. Ticket is RM4 per pax. The main attraction is not the cattle, but the spectacular view of Mount Kinabalu. It is better to be in Kundasang before noon, before the clouds covering the mountain.

Please take pictures at the farm because once you post it in your Facebook or Instagram, people would think you are in New Zealand. I don't know why (never been there), but many people says the same thing. So, we also took a few pictures (to pretend that we are in NZ. Funny!).

Jeng... Jeng... Jeng... Highlight of the day is Kiram's Village.

Kiram's Village is located at Kampung Mesilau, about 5 minutes drive from Desa Cattle Dairy Farm. The owner's son is my former colleague, but I am not paid for this post (I wish. LOL.). I honestly love the place, especially its gardens planted around the walkway to the cabins.

I booked Celery Cabin as it has 2 rooms for only RM150 (normal price during peak seasons is between RM200 to RM280). Kitchen and kitchen utensils are available for free of charge, but you have to pay another RM10 for the barbeque set and RM5 for the coal.

If you are lazy to cook, there is a small cafe next to the office where they will be able to cook something up for you. Inform them earlier if you have any special request. The operators are very friendly and they will treat you like a family.

I love everything about the simple cabin, except its non-working shower (or the water is too cold) and the an hour blackout around 7pm right after we finished barbequing our chicken wings and satay.

Please bring right clothing including socks and jackets, book and Astro card (if necessary) unless you are willing to pay another RM20 for their card. Internet connection is good (Wifi is FOC). My husband brought lots of instant drinks. Hot chocolate or Milo is good enough to keep you warm.

Wake up early for photo opportunity. 6 or 7am is the best timing for a clear view of Mount Kinabalu. Two days in Kundasang is enough to cover a number of attractions. Poring Hot Spring, National Park and Sabah Tea Garden are among places of interest. If you have the stamina, go climb the mountain. It requires two days to reach the summit.

Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival a mecca for jazz aficionados

For two days, the covered tennis courts of Sutera Harbour Marina Golf and Country Club were packed with jazz aficionados, enthralled to the renditions of Mia Palencia In Good Company, and sounds from Moscow Fish, Humanfolk and Kekko Fornarelli Trio among others.

The Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival (KKJF) held on June 14 and 15 returned bigger, better and bolder this time around with rhythm and beats that offers festival goers a toe-tapping good time.

Apart from the wonderful music showcased from 7 pm to 11 pm on both nights, local and foreign jazz lovers were served with thousands bottles of beer sponsored by Carlsberg.

Among the performers on Friday night were Funkafize, Albert Sirimal, Lazz United, Kekko Fornarelli Trio, Moscow Fish, Shanghai Jazz Redefined with Janet Lee and Johnny Alegre Trio.

On the second night, Kian Kok School Big Band, Appy Tot, Gee Mojina and Elixir, KK Jazz Half Marching Brass Band, Mega Boogies Blues Buster, Mia Palencia in Good Company, HumanFolk and Moscow Fish showcased their enthusiasm for all forms of improvised music.

The festival, which is in its seventh year, has so far proved a reliable mirror of international trends in jazz music.

Moscow Fish, one of the international bands performed an electronic and an acoustic show that wowed the audience with their unique and very versatile music.

In a short introduction during the event, Moscow Fish thanked the organizers of KKJF for giving them the chance to perform.

“I am very thankful for being invited to Sabah, and I am very touched with the appreciation of music by the people here. It is very rare in the world,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sabah-born Mia Palencia and her group, Mia Palencia In Good Company, as expected succeeded in mesmerizing the audience who had been waiting year long for the event.

On the first day, Mia sang several jazz numbers while on Saturday she swayed the audience with her rendition of sexy bossa nova songs.

Mia Palencia In Good Company is a unique collaboration between two islands. While pursuing her music degree on the Island Of Tasmania, Australia, Mia approached Tasmanian Jazz arranger and keyboardist Kelly Ottaway with the idea of forming an ensemble to explore both her original music and improvised jazz.

The duo recruited double bassist Hamish Houston and drummer Liam O’Leary, thus completing the line-up.

“Super excited at our Malaysian debut tonight. Hope to see some friendly faces in the audience,” wrote Mia, in her Facebook page before the show.

GruAvenue, featuring Poova Pachciak, concluded the two-days event with singer, songwriter and composer Poova showcasing her powerful voice.

Sabah Dragon Boat Race: Turning Strangers Into Friends

It was a sunny Sunday morning when I arrived at the venue of the 28th Sabah Dragon Boat Race at Likas Bay yesterday.

I was assigned to do colour story on the event, interview local and foreign tourists asking what they feel about the event and so on...

The festival, supposedly a symbolic race to remember a heroic poet in China named Qu-Yuan who was banished from the court when the ruler heeded the counsel of corrupt officials who conspired against him, was celebrated by the locals of Sabah in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.

Before the first race, tree young travelers came to our group (a bunch of journos on duty) asking whether they can join us as we were sitting on the sands. I said yes, hoping that I have the chance to interview them.

About 30 minutes exchanging stories and travel tips, the race started and everything done at about 12 noon. Since the three of them are heading to the city centre, I offered them a ride as my office is located next to Sunday Market. I turned strangers into friends.

Sam Felchar of France and Dagny-Elsie Anastassiou of Norway were featured in our paper today. Sam emailed me and promised to send me a postcard from France. He even promised to host me if I am planning to visit his hometown, Paris.

Oh ya, Sam and Dagny with the other friend, in fact, hitchhiked all the was from city centre to attend the race. So, offering a ride is not a big deal for me. I have done it before, why not do the same here, right?

One of my favourite stories for this year event, Singapore’s ‘Paddlers in Pink’ team stood as the defending champions in the Breast Cancer Survivors Women category, having attended last year’s 27th Sabah Dragon Boat Race as well.

Team captain, Irene Chui, and vice-captain, Rietta Teo, of the Singapore team of 33 people were both clad in full pink apparel, a color symbolizing breast cancer awareness. Their team represented the Breast Cancer Foundation of Singapore in the competition.

Both women were ecstatic to have won the title again this year and proudly stood as the race champions in addition to being breast cancer survivors.

“We want to show that we can still enjoy life to the fullest despite the ordeal we had to go through,” Irene said during the interview.

Looking at their spirit, I have the deepest respect for all cancer survivors. Salute them!

Borneo Eco Film Festival 2013 on September

Environmental films and community film-making are highlights of the Borneo Eco Film Festival (BEFF), which returns this year from 27th to the 29th of September at National Cultural and Arts Department (JKKN, Kota Kinabalu.

Leading up tp the festival is SUARA KOMUNITI workshops where the organizers are working to build the capacity of indigenous and local communities to communicate their stories, experiences and worldviews related to Borneo's bio-cultural heritage through the medium of film.

SUARA KOMUNITI activities are conducted all year long through village level workshops where indigenous and local communities work with SUARA guest trainers for two to three days of hands-on training in filmmaking approaches, style and techniques.

Agnes Agama, co-founder of BEFF and environmental anthropologist, said that the first round of workshops took place in Batu Puteh, Kinabatangan in April this year.

"Budding film-makers from selected local communities attended the first workshop of the year on Narratives and ideas, in which participants explored the concept of a 'narrative' and how to develop inspiration into ideas before translating them into film," she said.

Conducted by artistic film maker Chris Chong Chan Fui and creative writer Mellisa Leong, the four-day workshop was attended by the some of Sabah's pioneering non-governmental organizations, namely HUTAN, Model Ecologically Sustainable Community-based Tourism (MESCOT) and Partners of Community Organizations (PACOS).

The second SUARA KOMUNITI workshops on documentary-making will be held from 28-30 June 2013 in Bundu Tuhan, Ranau, followed by the final workshop on editing workshop at the end of August, culminating in a three-day intensive community filmmaking training course from 25-27 September at BEFF 2013.

Festival director Melissa Leong also called for submission for the Boleh Bah Filem Kita (BBFK) short-film competition.

"In collaboration with Borneo Geographic, the competition was well-received last year and we saw the creative submissions of amazing local talents. So we are looking forward to more creative entries this year," said Melissa in a press conference tiday.

I recently received the most exciting news from my boss. Not sure if my trip to Taiwan and Japan on July will be approved by the HQ management, but In Sha Allah, I am hoping it will be my birthday present this year.

As I blogged before, I am dreaming of playing with the snow, and I suppose to plan to backpack around Europe this year but my financial is a bit tight after my wedding last year. I need to save more, as Europe is expensive. If my side income is not doing well this year, I might change my plan to go to Australia.

Yup, you read me. Australia! Snow is rare in Australia, but we can find it. Of Australia's major cities, Canberra is the most likely to receive snow, followed by Hobart. Brilliant!

So, where am I going this July? Just wait and see. It is going to be interesting and full with excitement.

I was there at the launching today. 12 booths showcasing their food and handicrafts. It was disappointing, not as I expected. Can't wait for the finale of the Harvest Festival at KDCA Building on 30th and 31st May.

Two days before the polling day I managed to escaped from the 'chaos' of campaigning activities. It was entertaining to watch something really really good like musical performance, especially when you are busy with something.

It was awesome performance, but I personally prefer the 2009 and 2010 theme. This year, I love the storyline especially the main actor, Janrywine J. Lusin is my former colleague. So, consider my attendance as a moral support to him.

Overall, I loved it.

Injin Puput, the theme of this year Sabah fest tells the story of a grandfather, Aki Arusop and his grandson, Aaron going on a train ride along the west coast of Sabah. While at it, Aki Arusop reminiscences his father, Aki Gounon’s love story with a Chinese girl, Mei Ling. The musical started with a Murut warrior having a premonition of the arrival of British which was also a forecast of the appearance of Vulcan trains which is extended into the heart of Sabah.

These are some pictures I took from SABAH, Malaysian Borneo Facebook Page. My seat was at the front row, so I can't move here and there to take pictures, I am afraid if I am blocking the other audience at the back. Plus, the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin was the guest of honour on that night.

I am hoping for a better performances next year, and I always love to see the Murut's 'mangunatip' at the closing. I also prefer if the audience can come on the stage at the end of the show, like I always do when the venue of Sabah Fest was still in Magellan Sutera. JKKN's stage is very small, and the stage just nice for the dancers.

Anyway, thumbs up to everyone. You guys rox!

The Gardens Hotel, 100% will come back!

I recently had the opportunity to stay at The Gardens Hotel, Mid Valley Kuala Lumpur, and I must admit it was a great experience. I love the deluxe room. It was clean, comfy bed, pillows, great lighting... and wonderful breakfast. Location? Suberb!

It was a very short visit, as I was assigned by my boss to cover the Cow's Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA) Awareness Program at the hotel, so I stayed there for only a night, especially when the Election Commission has announced the nomination day for Malaysian 13th General Election. Means, I have to go back to Sabah to cover the campaigning activities.

I did not take many pictures because I was busy with the function and after that shopping... bla bla bla... (I went to Masjid Jamek for Hari Raya shopping, only RM12 by taxi). I arrived around 10pm at my room and had a wonderful sleep. Promised hubby I will treat him here, as we are planning of going to KL end of this year.

Baby Items Needed in Lahad Datu

I'm sure most of us (Malaysians) already know what is happening in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

My friend was assigned to cover the development of the incident, and she also went to the evacuation centers, which was setup for the villagers following the intrusion by armed militants from the southern Philippines. She said they are in need of mattresses, pillows, blankets and BABY ITEMS as most of them left their homes with only the clothes on their backs.

Let me share one of stories from my friend, which has opened my heart to do something.

SIX-DAY-OLD INFANT UNWITTING VICTIM OF INTRUSION

Wan Mauliana Amani Aziati is six days old today.

Her age also marked the number of days she has been cramping with 670 villagers at a temporary evacuation centre in Kampung Embara Budi.

The newborn, who suffers from mild jaundice, has yet to be vaccinated. And already, she is challenged to live in a poor hygienic place.

Fondly nicknamed 'Amoi' by the adults at the centre, she has not been given proper bath due to the lack of clean water supply.

"All we could do was wipe her body, luckily she is not grumpy, may be she understands the difficulties we are in," said her mother, Adawiyah Tuljannah.

The 25-year-old housewife from Kampung Tanjung Labian said Wan Mauliana was borned at 6.26pm on Mar 3, just two hours before they were forced to board a lorry and rushed to the hall.

"She was delivered by my mother-in-law, who is the midwife in my village. I was still weak when we were asked to leave, and only managed to grab two or three pieces of baby cloths and some essential things for my newborn, apart from our change," she said.

Adawiyah said they were excited to welcome the latest bundle of joy.

"We have bought a lot of things for her, but everything had to be left at our house. So I hope we can go home soon and live a normal life again," she said, holding the apple of their eyes close to her.

Accompanying her were husband Bakri Kabir and the couples two other children, Ikwan Mohd Ramdan, six, and Wan Shafiah Nafisgah Balqis, three.

Basri, meanwhile, revealed that Adawiyah started having her contractions at 6am.

"I wanted to take my wife to the clinic at around 5pm but all entries were closed by the security forces. We heard about the attack on Mar 1 resulting on the death of two commandos so we understand the purpose of the roadblock. So since we cannot go out, we turned to my mother instead," he said.

The 26-year-old labourer at the Felda Sahabat oil palm plantation said they were asked to "take a rest" since half a month ago following the stand off here.

Basri is keeping his fingers crossed, not knowing their fate, or whether their salaries would be paid.

"All I know is I need to protect my family and ensure nothing happen to them.

"It is sad that Wan Mauliana was brought to this world at a time when we are surrounded by all these chaos ... but I believe something good will come out from all this. Looking at her makes us forget the challenges ahead of us and I am optimistic that situation will change for good," he said.

After reading this story, my colleagues and I decided to collect used baby items to be donated to the evacuations centers. I focus on babies (and children) because my friend said they are the most affected by the incident. Some humanitarian missions has brought used clothes for the adults, so I decided to focus to the children ONLY. If I can't go, I will find a way to pass it to my friends, and they will give it to them. If your donations arrived after Friday, I will give it to the Red Crescent Sabah because they are doing the same project.

Carl and I had the opportunity to try the Valentine’s Day Set Dinner, earlier than the others, all sponsored by Novotel. It was a food-testing to allow me to experience the set menu so that I can write about it in this blog (an of course for the paper).

We both choose Lamb for our main course. Upon arrival at 6.30pm, we were served with sparkling juice and bread with butter before the first course arrived.

I personally think the decorations of table and chairs were nice and romantic, especially with the red candle light in the middle of the table, which was located near the glass wall. We can see the entire view of Alam Mesra and the funfair.

Turtles hatching at Puka Beach

Carl and I had the extraordinary opportunity to see tiny sea turtles hatching when visiting Puka Shell Beach in Boracay Island in January 2012. Puka Beach is located about 15 minutes (by tricycle) from the White Beach. We paid PHP100 for the little cutie transport.

As we arrived the seashore, we noticed that the locals crowding the marked turtle nest due to hatch that morning. Carl was thrilled about what has happened.

The sand began to collapse around the nest and one by one, tiny sea turtles emerged from the nest. It was one of the most amazing experiences of our lives, and Carl said to me he will stop eating sea turtle eggs. (It was bad knowing my own ate turtle eggs before, and I am feeling sooo good when Carls said he will not eating it anymore).

After an adult female sea turtle nests, she returns to the sea, leaving her nest and the eggs within it to develop on their own. (Source: Baby Sea Turtles) After 45 to 70 days (depending on the species), the hatchings begin to pip, or break out of their eggs, using a small temporary tooth located on their snout called a caruncle. Once out of their eggs, they will remain in the nest for a number of days.

The hatching begin their climb out of the nest in a coordinated effort. Once near the surface, they will often remain there until the temperature of the sand cools, usually indicating nighttime, when they are less likely to be eaten by predators or overheat. Once the baby turtles emerge from the nest, they use cues to find the water including the slope of the beach, the white crests of the waves, and the natural light of the ocean horizon.

It's estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatching will survive to sexual maturity (adulthood).
It was one of the reasons why Carl decided not to consume turtle eggs anymore. Plus, its critically endangered species. He only believed it after the staff of conservation centre told him about the facts repeatedly.

In Sabah, we often have the opportunity to see sea turtles at marine life parks. One spot that is often associated with sea turtles is the Sanctuary for Marine Turtles in Sandakan. The Turtle Islands Park lies 40 km north of Sandakan.The park comprises three small islands, Selingan, Gulisan and Bakungan Kechil. It covers an area of 1,740 hectares which includes the surrounding reefs and seas. Two species of turtles - Greens and Hawksbills are special features of this park.

While turtles can be easily viewed in captivity in the three island, Carl and I never has the opportunity to go there because of our limited annual leave- I guess we should spend more time visiting attractive tourism spots in our own place to appreciate what we have here compare to the other countries. Sigh~

If your family loves nature, pick any of attractive destinations in Sabah (we have islands and mountains) and you'll be likely to have the opportunity to make vivid vacation memories of your own.

But if you are visiting Boracay Island, please go to Puka Beach. Who knows you will be able to have the same experience like we had.

Those who like peace and quiet might want to skip the famous White Beach and instead head to Puka Beach. It's named for the Puka shells that can be found on the beach, so expect the sand to be coarser than that of its neighbors.

Puka is the second-longest beach in Boracay and also relatively empty most times, with no resorts on the sand and a limited number of restaurants. Only two restaurants I saw in Puka Beach, you can order hot or cold drinks and simple food from them. Carl and I ordered hot tea and fresh coconut-locally known as “buko” juice.

In 2011, CNN Travel announced Puka Beach as one of World's 50 best beach.

Kiteboarding at Bulabog Beach

Although I live near the beaches and islands, but Kota Kinabalu City does not give me the advantage to watch people kiteboarding. It is an extreme sport, I guess, but after watching hundreds of tough people surfing their kites at Bulabog Beach of Boracay, I found this water sport is safe and fun to watch!

It was our second time visiting Boracay and we were very excited to discover every single activities in the island apart from the wild nightlife and wonderful sunset at the White Beach.

Carl and I walked from D'Mall of Station 2 to Bulabog Beach. We knew about this particular beach from the staff at our accommodation. He said Bulabog Beach is a place for upper class people to play their expensive sport, Kiteboarding.

I did a little bit of research on by Blackberry before heading to the beach. Kiteboarding in the Philippines, particularly on Boracay Island has been rated by Yahoo travel as the one of the top 10 beach destinations in the world. Although this sport is not for me, but I am sure there is no harm in watching as long as you won't get hurt.

We spent 2-3 hours there, saw hundreds of surfers enjoying themselves and doing so many extreme moves. Carls was very excited looking at them. He even wanted to go for a short class, but when we asked around, it was very expensive and very heavy on our pocket. Discovery kiteboarding lessons available at about US100. At least, we know the price, so next time we can save more US Dollar for this particular activity.

During the 2-3 hours there, we also saw people who walk their dogs on the beach, while some are just doing their running, while the local vendors are walking around and offering you their local products such as accessories made by shells, honey, food, etc.

Memorable experience, and this sport is definitely an eye opener for me to try something new before I close my eyes. Another reason for us to visit Boracay ;-)

Willy's Rock: The Most Photographed Spot in Boracay

Many people said Willy's Rock at Station 1 of the White Beach, Boracay Island is the most photographed natural landmark in Boracay. I believed it because when you google 'Boracay', Willy's Rock will appear the most in the google image. Some people even said you will never been to Boracay until you took a photo with Willy's Rock.

When my friends and I visited Boracay about two years ago, we don't have the opportunity to enjoy this particular spot because we were very busy with our island hopping, sunset and swimming at Station 2.

On my recent visit with my husband (Carl) in January 2013 we went to Willy's Rock and took lots of photographs. We stayed at Station 3 because of the tight budget, so we walked to Willy's Rock early in the morning to avoid the heat from the afternoon sun. Willy's Rock is accessible by foot during low tide (so morning is the best time to be there), but bare in mind the distance between Station 3 to Station 1 is about 5km. I honestly regretted walking from Station 3 to Station1 after I found our the tricycle fare is only PHP100 (compare to the pain of my leg cramp. Im not that fit. Sigh!)

What is so special about Willy's Rock? Well, it's just a rock. Nothing really special here, but since most visitors said its a must visit place, we took the opportunity to walked there and now sharing these pictures. We also ordered two fruit shakes from Jonah's, Fruitshake, a famous restaurant a couple meters away.

Overall, if Bali has its Tanah Lot, Boracay has its Willy's Rock. It might not that special for some people, but we were very happy to have these pictures because we can have the memory of being here, only the two of us, forever. The best part, we can share our experience with our friends and family by showing the photographs.
