Grocery getter

I did it. I actually finished a project and it didn't take 3 years just 10 days. I was searching through Ravelry and came across a pattern for this market bag. I liked it and it seems like a quick project with great reviews. Upon further inspection, I noticed that the pattern came from a book I owned: Stitch N' Bitch: Superstar Knitting. The pattern called for fingering weight yarn which I had, but wanted to save just in case the pattern proved to difficult to keep my attention. Overall, I am happy with the result. The lace pattern was perfect for a lace noob like myself and it knitted up really fast with the worsted weight yarn. I knitted this for a friend. I hope she likes it.

ON TO THE NEXT PROJECT!

It's been almost 3 years since my last post. My newfound love of Ravelry.com has renewed my interest in blogging,....for the time being. Here are some picture highlights from the time we've been apart.

The Last House on the Left

2010-07-09T08:29:00.001-07:00

It's official! Adams and I have moved the bulk of our stuff into the Tanager place. Last night was the 2nd night sleeping there.

My parents AND BROTHER, David! chipped in with moving the heavy stuff. Their trucks and trailer helped tremendously...it probably took about 3 hours. David was the one to notice that we are living in the last house on the left. Although technically it's the 1st house on the right.....anyway we decided we should get the movie poster...what a horrible movie though...

The last things we moved were the kitties. Linus went in the carrier with Adams and I took Winston wrapped in a towel like a kittie burrito in my car. He did really well. He meowed a bit, but chilled in the seat for the most part. They acted like we were punishing them when we let them loose in the kitchen. Strange but they both ran downstairs to Adams' music room..it had the most familiar stuff from the Bluff house. Linus is always slow to warm to new situations. He hid in the little cubby behind the amp. I think they explored while we were sleeping. Linus spent the next day either in the music room or under the bed. Winston claimed his stoop at the top of the stairs. Last night and this morning they were fighting over it. Once things finally settle down (and we stop moving things around) I think the kids will too.

We still have miscellaneous stuff at the Bluff house: my skate gear, THE CAMERA, food, and other crap. I can't wait to be finished cleaning and we haven't even begun...not my favorite activity. We should have internet at the new place sometime today. yay!

Moving days.

2010-07-06T09:58:00.000-07:00

This has to be the most exhausting July 4th weekend I've ever had. Craftyfeast was Sunday in Columbia, a day that I have been dreading oh so long now. I have to say that it went rather smoothly. I think that if it were just my event then that would not have been the case. It was great having a group to share the nerves and all the tiny components of setup and follow through. This is going to be the beginning of a beautiful collective! I ran across several other great vendor, had awesome ice cream and custard ice, had a great time hanging out with Cola friends and even squeezed in a few fireworks on the walk to the car.

After the long day Sunday, Adams and I drove back home because we had to meet the tree guy at Tanager to make sure he cuts down the right ones. That went easier than expected and we were able to take almost 6 carloads of stuff over (two of those before lunch even!) and get a few necessities from Lowe's, our new favorite store. Tonight Adams has D&D and I have derby so moving festivities will resume tomorrow night with the help of my family. My brother has already said that "he doesn't want to, but he will." That is love right there. Family=free labor

Closing draws nigh.

2010-06-22T11:57:00.000-07:00

Closing on our house is Friday. I can't believe we're almost there. Loads of repairs have been and will be made by the seller. We're so lucky that it's a buyers market.

We've picked out colors for the rooms that need it (bedroom, teevee room and my craft room) and my parents are going to take care of that. Score! The perks of having a handy father in the painting business. Adams and I have already decorated this place in our heads. We've picked up some freebie furniture: couch, loveseat, coffee table, record table and antique sewing machine thanks again to my parents. The 1st, 2nd and last coming from a house that my dad is painting, the owner recently went into a nursing home and the son is clearing out the house to sell. We are going to have a lot more room to fill at the new place and not a lot of furniture to fill it with. Technically we could do that with books. Oh jeebus! books! I should try my hand at making furniture out of novels....it could work.

We went by the place last week to check on some of the work that had been done, gutters were installed. Half way down the street there was a white cat with black markings lying in the middle of the run. As we get closer we notice it's a Hitler cat. It had the mustache AND hairline! And it made no attempt to move as we drove around it. As we get to the driveway there is a smaller b&w kitten. This is the first time we've noticed any neighborhood cats there. Our current neighborhood is a drop off spot for abandoned cats being right near the river. We've lucked out and meet some real sweethearts. Currently we've taken up with a solid black male that Adams christened Otto. We've thought about taking him with us to the new place, but have regrets that we may not be able to give him all the love he needs while taking him away from what he knows. I think it would be a shame not to bc there is another black cat that bullies him. But knowing that Hitler cat lives in our new neighborhood, along with the neighbors dog (which is fenced, but still a dog...) I don't know if that would be better.

Otto loves head scratchin's and I like watching his light claw against his dark fur.

I've never been so busy in my brain and other wise. There is so much to think of right now: derby issues, work changes with my boss leaving, craftyfeast, the Regulators bout and getting everything settled with both places. And that's all before the 18th of July. ugh!

Sirens VS Classics City

2010-06-12T20:22:00.000-07:00

This 110-106 win puts our record at 5-0 with 5 more games left in the 2010 season. woot! This was a surprise win against a team that taught us everything we know about derby. Thanks to Athens!

Under contract.

2010-05-28T11:14:00.000-07:00

We put in our bid and received a counter offer that we accepted. Details were ironed out and we are now under contract. The inspection is scheduled for Wednesday, June 2nd in the afternoon. I hope it goes well and there isn't anything seriously wrong or a lot of back and forth. I'm hoping for a quick and easy process, but I'm just a newb.

I've made some progress for the craft show and have developed even more ideas. Sometimes I wish I could turn off my brain....

The veggies are doing lovely and I hope we have a nice sunny spot for them at the new place.

Last night, some of the Sirens had a Butt Naked Trivia sendoff for Josie Stalin. She's in the military and skated a couple months with us and in the Charleston game. I'm going to miss her on and off the track. Why must all the military peeps be cool and missable?

Crafty Feast, etc.

2010-05-15T09:22:00.000-07:00

I was accepted in my first juried craft show. I was kinda hoping that I wouldn't be....with all the stuff that's been going on I've run outta the initial steam. I've got plenty of ideas, it's the confidence and willpower I'm missing.

My wristcushion on the vendor page...I should probably make more of those.

There's been a lot of derby drama going on as of late. It would be fine it I wasn't directly involved. I won't even waste my time typing it, it's so stupid. I hate it, but it's affected me greatly. I've been in a serious funk. That coupled with Audrey and the stress of buying a house is crazy...I didn't know how easy I had it.

Speaking of buying a house, we are trying to put a bid on the Tanager place. It should be in by next week. I'm excited and can't stop mentally moving out of the current place and decorating the new one...makes me kind of feel grown up.

The veggies are doing fine. Looks like they are trying to outgrown their containers. There are several blossoms on both the pepper plants and we've harvested some cilantro for an awesome pasta dish.

Also, we're doing the Neilson ratings again. I love it! They also seem to correspond with bout weeks though....

Garden! and other news.

2010-05-01T08:08:00.000-07:00

After 2.5 years without one we now have another patio garden. We plantered them a week ago Sunday. It consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, green bell peppers, cayenne peppers and cilantro. I took pictures right after and intend on charting the weekly progress photographically. I'm excited. We have the perfect deck for such a thing...too bad it faces the chatty neighbors. le sigh. Could be worse I suppose.

Speaking of moving, we've begun the official search to find a house...to buy! Wednesday we went to check out a few properties to possibly cash in on the last days of the tax credit. Expectations were at reasonable levels...still are. Adams and I found and fell in love with a 4 bedroom 2 bath split level on a cul-de-sac and shady lot. The good kind of shady except for a few dead pines, that is. The appliances included a built in wine cooler. We aren't much on white wines, but we might learn to get used to it. Fireplace inside and fire pit out back. It just seemed too good to be true really. The next day, Thursday, we corral the parents to get their opinions and good thing we did. Adams' dad, being an electrical engineer, knew all the right things to look for and the right questions to ask. My dad, being a paint contractor, has been around the block too. Long story short, there was alot to work on not to mention the fact it was on the higher end of our price range. Ultimately we decided to wait. Connie, the Realtor, confirmed that if it was meant to be then it would happen. She said that once we get past this tax break and house sales are slowing then prices may drop as people get desperate to unload properties. Really our lease isn't up until mid-August so we have plenty of time to find the right place...I hope it's a split level. ;)

SCS won the bout against Savannah this past Sunday. Final score 112-84 for a 3-0 season so far. I'm really proud of my team. This is only proof that we can't let our guards down now and that I still have a long way to go as a skater. Next bout is at home against Charleston's LowCountry HighRollers on Sunday, May 16th.

2004-2010

2010-04-17T07:20:00.000-07:00

We laid Audrey to rest last night in a corner of my parent's yard. She spent a good/happy chunk of her life there so we thought it appropriate. We shared stories and good memories of her and it changed the mood from sadness and tears to laughter and joy. I feel better about it, but I walk around the house passing her usual spots and can't help but think of her. I'm not sure how the boys will take it when they fully realize that she isn't coming home. I guess I know they know.

Audrey Update

2010-04-16T08:15:00.000-07:00

Thursday Adams wakes up to find her in the litter box. She's just lying there. He feeds her and gives her water. We both go to work. I'm the first to get back home. I look for her and she's behind the TV where she can get away from the other cats. I go change clothes and come out to the sound of the litter box. It's her. She goes from the litter box to the water bowl and actually drink on her own. As she finishing up Adams comes home. From the water bowl she goes back to the litter box. This is where the loop begins. She will go from the litter box to the living room and back again. She must have done it a dozen times. I check the mail and she follows me outside to do the same. We go back inside and into the dining room where the food bowls are and she makes to get something to eat but instead hovers on the bowl like it were a litter box. Adams calls the vet office to try to get a doctor. He calls back eventually to tell us that Nitrogen has built up from her kidneys and that is what's clouding her brain. He says it won't be too long now.
Half of me is still in denial waiting for a miracle but the other logical half is remembering the good times and thankful that we had her this long. She is only the 2nd pet that I've had to prove mortality, but the 1st to be mine independent of my family. She was completely wild when Adams' sister-in-law dropped her off. She had been found on the side of the road not too far from where I grew up and went to high school and had lived with a family with a baby (I don't understand how) till it became too much. Adams spent so much time with her till eventually he could hold her in his lap and pet her. He had her spayed and took her on a roadtrip to Florida. She spent the drive in his lap and that month at a friend's apartment with him. Shortly after that Adams, those friends, their dog, her and I moved into a two bedroom apartment in Aiken. It was a tight fit and she gave that dog (which was so sweet) and the roommates HELL. After a year, Adams, Audrey and I moved into my Papa's old house. Soon after we got the boys, Winston and Linus. It took some getting used to on her part, but eventually she accepted them almost like a step-mom. She even groomed them. Unfortunately they had a flea problem and she ended up ingesting flea poison. That was her first medical ordeal. We were lucky we didn't lose her then. The house was on a half acre on a dead end street so we thought it might be good to let her out now and again. She had never been so happy. My parents fell in love with her even though they never got to pet her. The downside was a group of feral cats that lived in the neighborhood. One in particular singled her out. She was tough, but still tiny and however large her ego it couldn't win a fight for her. Fights led to abscesses and more trips to the vet. After three years we moved to where we are now, a busier street, and let her out less and less, but not without more fights with that neighborhood's strays. We been here almost 2 years in August.
For the short amount of time that she's been on this Earth and in our family, I will miss her greatly. We have a stockpile of good memories to pull from to get us through this transition. I love you, Audrey II.

Audrey II

2010-04-14T19:32:00.000-07:00

My husband's birthday was Monday, April 12th. Over the weekend we took separate trips to Athens, Ga. I was going to a Classic City bout after work and he was going record shopping and touring the Terrapin Brewery. We met for dinner and got back early Sunday morning. The next day we both had practice (me: roller derby, him: band) Being so wound up in ourselves we didn't notice our oldest cat wasn't quite herself. We make a vet appointment for Tuesday and since I had it off I took her in. She isn't the most cooperative cat so I expect it to be an all day thing bc they usually have to sedate her to get near the problem. After explaining that she's been lethargic, barely eating and isolating herself the vet gets a little too close and she hisses at him. He noticed that her breath was foul and he explained that it could be a few problems: stomach, kidneys or diabetes. I leave. Hours later I get the call that her bloodwork was not good. She was severely anemic and her kidneys were failing. I call Adams and we drive to the vets. After a further explanation and thinking that she was going to go any minute without a blood transfusion that may only prolong the agony we decide to take her home. We spent the night stealing glances at her to make sure she was still with us. Today was the same story. We took her outside because that was one of her favorite spots. I can't express how heart-wrenching it is to see such a vibrant cat reduced to a feeble pile of fur. I've been mourning the loss of her even though she is still with us.

It's log, it's log!
