May's Students of the Month

One student per grade each month is selected as a LHS Student of the Month. Each month, nominations are made by LHS staff members. A committee reviews the nominations and chooses the four Students of the Month each month. Nominations are open to all students at LHS. April’s Students of the Month are: 9^th grade Rebecca Leslie, 10^th grade Carlissa Payne, 11^th grade Marshall Auer and 12^th grade Morgan Alwell.

Also each month a student is rewarded our Crown Trophy Student of the Month award. Our seven administrators decide on this recipient. Cole Howard is the Crown Trophy Student of the Month for April.

Both of these awards are given to students who demonstrate great Lancer character!

Power Outage at Lafayette

Update at 10:34 a.m.:

The power and phone service at Lafayette High School has been restored. Parents may call the welcome center at (636) 733-4100, if they need to contact the school.

Earlier announcement:

Please be advised that at about 10 a.m. this morning, we experienced a power outage at our school. Currently, power is out in some parts of our school building. We are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.

Our students are safe and continuing their school day. If you need to contact the school, please call 636.733.4114 until the power outage is resolved.

Updates to this situation will be posted on the Lafayette website when they become available.

Students Discuss Bullying with Documentary Film Maker

On May 8, students involved with the Be the Change club at Lafayette High School discussed mental health issues and bullying with Mark Norwine, bullying prevention manager for CHADS Coalition for Mental Health. The conversations were filmed as part of Norwine’s documentary film, Walking Man, in which he is traveling across the state to raise awareness and help erase the stigma often associated with mental health issues.

A documentary film crew from Los Angeles, Calf. recorded the experience as students shared their personal stories on these issues. Lafayette is one of only a few schools in Missouri selected to participate in this film. On May 11, Norwine concluded his 200-mile trek with a candlelit vigil for those who have lost someone that suffered from mental illness. To learn more about the film, visit the website.

Mandatory Graduation Rehearsal

There will be mandatory graduation rehearsal for all seniors on May 17, at 8:30 a.m. in the back gym of Lafayette High School. Seniors not attending the rehearsal will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony. At the conclusion of the rehearsal and after all fines/fees, discipline, and attendance obligations have been fulfilled, eligible seniors will be issued 10 tickets to the ceremony and will receive their cap and gown. Students in need of additional tickets to the ceremony will have the opportunity to request them from designated individuals following the rehearsal. Extra tickets that are available will be distributed at that time.

LHS Graduation

Lafayette High School Graduation will be Monday, May 20th at the Chaifetz Arena on the St. Louis University campus. Students participating in the ceremony should arrive at the designated “graduate only” entrance to the Chaifetz Arena no later than 5:30 p.m. The complex will open for general seating at 6 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 7 p.m. For more graduation information, please click on “12th Grade – Dr. Tim Jones” under the heading Principal Blogs on the right side of the website.

DESE Parent Survey: Services for Special Education

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is gathering information from parents who have a child(ren) who receives special education services.

Below is a link to a copy of the survey with two options for submission: online or mail. This survey is confidential; individual responses are not shared with the school district or anyone else.

All surveys should be completed by May 10, 2013.

End of Year Lunch Account Policy

All balances left in meal accounts at the end of the school year will automatically be carried forward for students continuing in any Rockwood School. If a student moves out of the school district, a refund can be requested. The parent/guardian may request a refund by phone call or a written note to the cafeteria manager. If the parent/guardian chooses to have a student pick up a cash refund for an amount less than $10.00, a signed note must be sent to the cafeteria manager giving the student permission to receive the refund. Refunds over $10.00 will be issued by check from the Rockwood School District.

Lit-Link-Lineup ACT & PSAT Vocab Words March

Two of our school goals are to improve our average ACT composite score from 24.7 to 25 and to increase the number of students recognized by National Merit on the PSAT. Studies indicate that improving vocabulary helps improve reading comprehension and ACT and PSAT scores. Since ACT is used by universities to determine college admission and scholarship consideration and PSAT is used to determine scholarships awarded by National Merit, LHS wants to increase the educational opportunities of our students by helping them score as well as possible on these two high stakes tests. Each month our teachers come up with 20 words, their meaning, and a sentence in which the word is used. These words are necessary for high school students to be ready for college. Parents can help by using the 20 vocabulary words with their student. These words are placed on bulletin boards in the building, hallways above lockers, and in the “Image” our newspaper with a crossword for students to have fun with while they learn. At the same time our teachers continue to encourage students to use these words in the classroom. Please look for our Vocabulary words on our LHS website at the beginning of each month.
