Vaginal Varicose Veins

Firstly apologies for the title of this post BUT this is actually a very serious condition I discovered recently. A customer asked me to source a product to help relief the pain and discomfort of this condition, which affects around 10% of pregnant women. Sadly it isnt something we have considered as yet but we do have 2 superb new pregnancy /post natal products coming out in the new year so watch this space.

In the meantime, if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself suffering from Vulvar varicosities

General Symptoms of Vaginal Varicose Veins

These are a few useful coping tips:-

1)PELVIC FLOOR EXERCISES

Increase blood flow and circulation to the affected area and help to strengthen the supporting tissues that lie around the veins making them stronger.

2) SUPPORTIVE UNDERWEAR

Wearing underwear that feels supportive on the vulva as long as it doesn't cut into the groin area will help and increase comfort.

3) REST UP

Avoid Squatting and rest as much as possible.

4) AVOID STRAINING IN ANY WAY

Try to take your time when you go to the loo Do not put it off if you feel the urge. Most importantly try not to strain when you do go. It can help to put your feet onto a low footstool whilst on the loo. After the birth, try placing folded toilet paper or a pad in your hand and applying gentle counter-pressure to the vulva may help offer support to the area when opening the bowels.

5) NATURAL THERAPIES

Options I have read about include filling a household rubber glove with water (not if allergic to latex!), tie off the fingers and deep freeze them to make small ice fingers for the area. These could also be helpful for the initial swelling of the perineum, especially if you had to have stitches. It is recommended that you only use ice fingers for 30 minutes to an hour at a time, and then give it a break for around 2 hours. Constant cold can reduce the blood flow, essential for the healing process

I will be bringing you useful help pages such as this on a more regular basis...I learn something every day so am happy to share it :-)

First Holiday with a new Baby..Holiday?? Really!!!

First Holiday with Baby

Lets just get one thing straight, I use the word ‘holiday’ very loosely. It may be more appropriate to use the expression ‘short-term relocation’ when you take a new baby on his or her first trip abroad. In our case baby was just 2 months old and we readily accepted an invitation to join the in-laws in France. First issue was to work out how to get the car seat needed in the car to the airport, over to France for when we are to be picked up. Solution: borrow a car seat for the in-laws to drive over to France and back and leave ours in the car! Same with the pram, as the flight was short, so was the plane!!

Now the thing with taking baby on holiday is you need to take away EVERYTHING you may or may not need for baby during that week. So your list includes, your choice of feeds (carry your own if breast feeding) bottles, sterilizer, pacifiers if needed (and in our case they were!), , dribble cloths, nappies, wipes, sleeping bag and in my case an extensive and fashionable wardrobe, including a choice of cute swimwear of course.

So we make the flight, travelling relatively light as the in laws kindly loaded up their car and left days earlier. Now, when my baby was born she was particularly pale and given my colouring this meant she looked nothing like me with her pale skin and bone straight hair. At two months the task of having her first passport photo taken was drama enough…don’t even think about popping new born in the photo booth at the Post Office either. This event is costly but worth it to get the passport right.

So we arrive in Bergerac airport, AKA a temporary shed! Handing over our passports including baby’s cute pink leather bound document, adorned with tiny footprints (Ok, I know, but it was so cute) and the Customs official looks from me to baby, to Daddy, and back to me. He then consults a colleague who also looks from me to baby, to Daddy, and back to me. Thanks to my school girl French I convince them that the baby is actually ours and we are not kidnappers smuggling her into France! Although still sceptical I suspect, they eventually wave us through.

So we arrive at our wonderful accommodation and unpack. Promptly blow up the baby swimming flotation aid and dash to the indoor pool. My first time in a swimsuit since childbirth was NOT pretty but water is very forgiving and I hide behind my baby bobbing joyfully in the shallow end.

Day trips were drama free apart from the episode when we wanted cradle cap cream. We found a fairly remote pharmacy and spent almost half an hour trying to explain what we needed. Although between us our French was pretty good we were repeatedly offered cream for baldness, Hemorrhoidsointment, head lice treatment and various other products clearly unsuitable for a new born baby, in any language! Eventually the correct cream was found and was actually brilliantly effective. Thankfully the pram had travelled before us so we enjoyed many relaxing, baby settling strolls around the local area. On one occasion soaking up the sunshine with my beautiful baby gurgling up at a fellow English tourist, we were asked ‘his’ name. I managed to fight the urge to point out that my baby dressed almost entirely in pink was not some radical statement but a clear indication that my baby was in fact a ‘she’!

If you take only one piece of advice just remember this. The sleepless nights, the regular feeds and the constant guilt when you think your baby is disturbing others, all come with you when you go on holiday. Don’t be fooled into thinking it will be restful, it is enjoyable though and a change of scene was just what we needed. So soak up the sunshine, enjoy the lovely food and good company and make the most of any gran parent help you can get. So, my tip…be very grateful for babysitters being there on your first holiday away with baby!

So take my advise: If you are still pregnant, get that last holiday in now as they will be quite different after your loved one arrives!(in a good way BUT not exactly restful!)
