The Suburbanization of Long Island

The Suburbanization of Long Island

A look at how Long Island's economy and real estate flourished in the 1900's

Long Island was once fields of farms and a place many American Indians called home. Eventually, the Dutch and English invaded Long Island taking over ther Indian tribes and revolutionizing the land. Howver, in the 18th and 19th centuries, Long Island was still mainly rural and agricultural.

Suburbanization began early in the 20th century, when subway trains allowed masses of workers to commute from their Manhattan jobs to Queens and Brooklyn. These borroughs offered more affordable living to the lower-class. Immigrants spilling over from new York City made comfortable lives on Long Island. Immigrants mainly consisted of Irish American, Italian American, and Jewish American populations.

When racing was banned on public roads, one of the Vanderbilts opened the Long Island Motor Parkway in 1908 from Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma. This limited access motor highway was one of the first in the world.

In the mid 1900's suburbanizaton reached beyond the western end of the island, and Long Island began the transformation from backwoods and farms to your typical American suburb. Eventually developing parkways and state parks spanning across the island. Jones Beach was, and still is, the most famous of these national parks.

Long Island quickly became New York City's retreat, with millions of people traveling from Manhattan to the newly established state parks. Commuter towns were sprining up along the first railroad line making it a cheaper and more rural place to live than Manhattan. Over the years the Southern State Parkway, the Northern State Parkway, and in the 1960's the Lond Island Expressway were built to allow for easy transportation east to west.

After World War II Long Island's population skyrocketed. People who worked and lived in New York City were now moving out to Long Island in the new developments built during the post-war 'boom'. The most famous post-war development is the town of Levittown, due to it beign the first place a developer built numerous houses in one subdivision, providing a great opportunity for war veterans returning home.

As the years passed Suffolk County started to develop as much as its counterpart Nassau County. Major roads such as Jericho Turnpike, 25A, and the Sunrise Highway allowed for more towns to be build furthur east. Railroad lines were added and extended to make a commute to Manhattan possible for all Long Islanders.

Nowadays, the entire island has been influenced by the 'suburban sprawl'. However, the most east and further away from Manhattan you get on Long Island, the more potato farms and wine fields you will see, just like historical Long Island.
