Every year we buy our 3 day Gympie Show pass, dust off our Akubras, polish our RM Williams’ boots and head off to play!

The Gympie Show dates this year are for 17, 18 & 19 May.

So much to see and do at the Gympie Show!

I know it is a over used cliche to say there is something for everyone at the Gympie Show but there is! Cattle, birds, baby animals (James has to take me in with all the parents taking their kids in, poor man!), farm equipment, side-show alley, show bags, cooking demonstrations, children’s entertainment, fireworks, masses of food (our annual Dagwood Dog!), snake demonstrations (they all look poisonous to me – because I keep my eyes closed), show jumping, fruit and vegetable competitions, wood chopping etc. I am sure I have left something huge out but there is so much going on at the Gympie Show that is why we have to go more than once!

The organisers work very hard to keep the Gympie Show fresh, so every year there are new rides for the kids in sideshow alley, new classes in the ring, more fireworks on 2 nights, miniature pig racing, there are different Celebrity chefs, last year they even roped in our good natured Local Member of Parliament to show us his skills on the barbie (think he was good, we laughed so much I can’t remember!). Who knows what they are going to have this year at the Gympie Show!

Cooking at the Gympie Show

Moving inside the Pavilion we have my favourite displays of art, COOKERY, cake icing, handicrafts, cookery, photography, school work and did I mention the cookery competition? The Cookery competition has a special place in my heart as last year some friends and I got together and decided to add some new blood to the competition (not literally of course!). So we entered, well I only entered 3 classes but my best bud went wild, not only did she enter a least a dozen classes so did her three children, believe me I know, I helped her unstack her 4WD! And yes, we did win quite a few prizes, I got a second place for my Passionfruit Butter and a Third place for my Lemon Butter. My friend and her children won so many, I don’t think even she can remember them all apart from her little boy and his fab chocolate cake coming first! it is great to see the whole family winning at the Gympie show. This year I am entering again so we will see if I can improve my score! I have been practicing hard on our guests and I must be doing something right as they either want the recipe or want to buy a jar!

The Cattleman’s Bar at the Gympie Show

Another one of our “Must dos” for the Gympie show is to go and have a drink in the Cattleman’s bar (ideally in the evening whilst waiting for the fireworks to start). It is one of the few times you will catch me drinking beer out of a can, but you just have to do it (well the first year I ordered a wine and it was Chateau cask in a plastic cup and not worth the calories, so beer it is and it is cold!). We love the people watching and trying to blend in, James has become something of an expert in telling the difference between the dress of diary cattlemen and beef cattlemen. Both types of cattle are judged on different days, so each night a different “breed” of cattleman is in the bar…. well that is our excuse for having to go to the bar both nights…

So if you are tired of the Ekka in August when the westerly winds are blowing cold, why not come to the best country show in Queensland, the Gympie Show on 17, 18 or 19 May and enjoy a real country day and night out!

The Gympie Show on 17, 18 or 19 May

Lagoon Pocket Bed and Breakfast – The natural Gympie accommodation

<fb:comments-count href="http://lagoonpocket.com/the-gympie-show-2012/"></fb:comments-count>

Video guide to our website

Gympie accommodation

Uncategorized

Cooroy. All these towns are worth a look in their own right but today I am talking about the glamorous shopping, food mecca of Noosa, oh yes nearly forgot there is a rather gorgeous beach and fab National Park at Noosa as well.

I get a smile on my face as soon as we start the descent down to Tewantin and I spy the blue Pacific, as my Mother loves to call it. There is a great wharf complex at Tewantin itself which is worth a wander, lovely little boutiques and some super restaurants overlooking the water. But today we will carry onto Hastings Street and Noosa National Park and beach.

Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park is worth a look, you can do an easy very scenic walk along the coast through the trees or you can go for a round hike, we have done both and love it. You can take a picnic and your swimming costume and enjoy a dip on the sheltered little beaches along the way. There are many opportunites for photos looking back at Noosa or down onto the wonderful rocky cliffs and crashing waves. Yup, I am a big fan of the National Park. It is the only time I have ever seen a koala in the wild, and not just one! Of course, when we took my brother-in-law from the UK here, could we spot one, of course we couldn’t, but on our own no problem!

Noosa Shopping

Hastings Street, apart from some of the most fantastic restaurants has a great selection of shops; clothing, homewares, books, jewellery but be warned it is not cheap but it is very beautiful. And as for food options, words escape me but shall I just say I have never had a bad meal in Noosa. As well as Hastings Street itself, the restaurants of Gympie Tce along the Noosa River are not to be overlooked, I have tried over the years a fair selection of them and as I say never had a bad meal.

Noosa Beach

Today though instead of one of our favourites Noosa haunts, James wanted to try the Noosa Surf Club which directly overlooks Main beach. He has always looked up at it and wondered what it would be like, especially after it underwent a big refurb a few years back. So today we investigated. Inside it is, as expected the bar/dining room of a surf club, but the big picture windows draw your eye straight out to the beach, the sea beyond and Double Island point in the distance, yup it is breathtaking. You can sit inside or on the undercover balcony, we choose the balcony and it was great. Now I was wondering if the food could live up to the view, well it did a mightly fine job. No it is not haute cuisine, but it is very good Australian fair. We had a seafood basket which was delicious, I spotted a very tempting steak going by, along with a very unboring chicken salad and James loved the look of the bucket (yes, literally) of prawns the next table was enjoying. There was a daily specials board and I was briefly tempted by a chicken and cashew stirfry, but when by the beach… A great place to take overseas visitors to really showcase the great Queensland lifestyle.

We opted not to have dessert at the Surf Club but rather wander along Hastings Street and endulge in an ice cream as we wandered back along the boardwalk along the top of the beach.

So if you want a day out from Lagoon Pocket B&B and you fancy a combination of the bush and the beach, why not follow out foot steps to Noosa?

<a

So we thought we would share Suzannah’s hot cross buns recipe with you. We often have guests at Lagoon Pocket Bed & Breakfast who say they must dig out the bread maker from the back of the kitchen cupboard when they get home. Well here is a great excuse to do just that! And if you can’t be bothered, we still have a couple of rooms at Lagoon Pocket B&B available for the Easter long weekend, when Suzannah will be serving both traditional and Chocolate Hot Cross Buns!

Traditional Hot Cross Buns (using a bread maker)

Ingredients for Hot Cross Buns

For the bun

350ml Water

1 egg lightly beaten

2 tbl Oil (Canola)

1 tsp Salt

2 tbl Sugar (Brown preferably)

600g (4 cups) Bread Flour

3 tbl Milk Powder

2 1/4 tsp Yeast

1 tbl Cinnamon

1 tbl Mixed Spice

1 tsp ground Cloves (optional)

150gm (1/2 cup) Sultanas

45g (1/4 cup) mixed peel

For Cross:

1/4 cup Plain Flour

2 tbls water

For Glaze:

1/2 cup Icing Sugar sifted

1/2 tsp Allspice (optional)

1/2 tsp ground Cinnamon

2 tbl Water

Cooking Hot Cross Buns

1.Put all the bun ingredients except the fruit into the bread maker and set to Dough program.

2. When the break maker beeps for ingredients that you don’t want churned up add the sultanas and mixed peel. If your bread maker doesn’t have this option leave these ingredients to the end and knead into the sweet dough.

3. At the end of the dough cycle take out the dough, knead to get out the air bubbles then roll into 18+ balls, place on an oiled baking tray, leave in a warm spot for 30 mins to rise.

4. When you hot cross buns are nicely risen mix 2bls of water and 1/4 cup plain flour together into a smooth batter. Spoon into a piping bag and pipe a cross on each of the buns.

5. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180C for 15/20 mins until lightly golden brown. Meanwhile prepare your glaze, mix together icing sugar, allspice, cinnamon and water in a small bowl.

6. Slide the buns from the baking tray onto a wire rack and brush with glaze whilst still warm.

Enjoy your hot cross buns warm with butter……

I know this sounds, and is, fiddly but the result is delicious and you will never go back to shop bought buns again!

Variations on Hot Cross Buns

You can make Chocolate Hot Cross Buns by omitting the fruit and spices from the recipe, instead add 2 tbl Cocoa powder at the dough making stage. Then when you take the dough out of the machine add 1 cup of chocolate drops (the smaller the drops the better) I have added this at the fruit stage and it has melted in the machine so best to knead them in later.

Last year a guest told me she puts cut up apricots in, instead of peel. So as long as you stick to the quantities you can mix and match your fruits/chocolate, and add more or less or different spice. But you absolutely MUST tell me of any truly great combinations!

Enjoy your hot cross buns!

<fb:comments-count href="http://lagoonpocket.com/hot-cross-buns-easter-at-lagoon-pocket-b-and-b/"></fb:comments-count>

New Lagoon Pocket B and B Facebook page

Gympie accommodation

News and events

Gympie

Kenilworth Bluff

One of our favourite day’s out from Lagoon Pocket B&B is to take a drive down the glorious Mary Valley to the pretty hinterland town of Kenilworth. From Lagoon Pocket Road turn left on the Mary Valley Hwy heading away from Dagun, Amamoor, Kandanga or Imbil all signposted from the road.

Kenilworth Bluff

It takes about half an hour to get to Kenilworth and the scenery really is quite something. Beautiful farming country (all of which would have gone under water had the Traveston Dam gone ahead) and then to the left you see the magnificent Kenilworth Bluff, a large rocky outcrop, presiding over the countryside.

The Belbird Cafe, just south of Kenilworth

You have to turn right into the town of Kenilworth from the main road, all clearly signposted and then travel along the main street past the pub, a handful of shops and cafes (more on them later) because we are off to hear the Bellbirds first. You drive through Kenilworth and out the other side, back into more farming country and then little homemade signs start to appear for Bellbird Cafe. It is off to the right and very clearly signposted. There is parking around the back and once you step out of the car you will hear the bellbirds. That magical distinct “ting” of their call. I just love it, it take me back to my childhood and driving through Cunningham’s Gap and winding down the windows to listen to them. Memories. Never did I think I would be lucky enough to live so close to some.

Bellbird Cafe is very much on the motor bike enthusiasts itinerary so if you like bikes (as the owner himself does) you will be in heaven, if like us they don’t grab you, that’s fine there is plenty else to grab you about Bellbird Cafe. Peter, the owner stocks a super range of fresh local fruit and vegetables which is always a winner for me who likes to cut down her “food miles” where possible.

The Bellbird Cafe Steak Sandwich!!!

I was spoilt for choice when it came to ordering lunch so I had to seek Peter’s guidance between the lasange and the steak sandwich. The steak sandwich was the recommendation to which we added a side order of thick cut chips. Big success, huge success, very pleased we were hungry when these delicious steak sandwichs on turkish bread brimming over with fresh salad touched down in front of us, so good did they look that the woman on the next table asked what they were, when we told her she said she would be ordering that next time when they were here for lunch, they were just having a snack today (a very yummy looking scone, cream and jam). We sat outside looking onto the garden and listened to the bellbirds as we munched our way through this magnificent burger and crispy fries. Yum! Unfortunately we were too full for dessert so we toddled off back to Kenilworth’s main street for a little explore.

….And back to Kenilworth.

Lasting Impressions Gallery. There is always a fabulous art exhibition on and this time they excelled themselves with the beautiful watercolours of Bruce Buchanan. We noticed a new bakery had opened and mentally made a note to try it on our next trip to Kenilworth. Of course we had to stop at Nanna McGinns for a coffee and sit on their lovely verandah and catch a welcome breeze. For those with dogs McGinn’s does have a little shaded area in their garden for poochs to wait while their owners have lunch/or a coffee, complete with a water bowl and shady tree.

Further down the main street of Kenilworth is the famous Kenilworth Cheese factory and shop, where you can taste and buy their cheese and yogurt as well as a selection of other gourmet goodies.

There are several interesting gift/clothing shops along Kenliworth’s main street, ideal for finding a memento of your trip and a pressie for a friend at home.

Kenilworth is a lovely trip out from Lagoon Pocket. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

<fb:comments-count href="http://lagoonpocket.com/bluffs-bellbirds-and-steak-sandwiches-at-kenilworth/"></fb:comments-count>

Our carbon footprint was down again in 2011

Gympie accommodation

News and events
<guid

So we are delighted to be able to announce that in 2011 we reduced our carbon footprint yet again.

Overall we achieved a reduction of over 3 tonnes compared to 2010. That is a 13% reduction per guest night, a level that is just 18% of the best practice bench mark levels that we set in 2008 at the beginning of this project.

In fact since 2008, we have reduced our carbon footprint by over 46%.

In addition we have been completely self sufficient in our water usage and we have maintained our waste to landfill at below best practice levels.

So to all our guest who have helped us to set the standard in Sustainable Gympie accommodation in 2011, a very big “Thank You”.

Lagoon Pocket Bed & Breakfast – the natural gympie accommodation

<fb:comments-count href="http://lagoonpocket.com/our-carbon-footprint-was-down-again-in-2011/"></fb:comments-count>
