Sardar Latif Khan Khosa, the Governor Punjab conferred degrees and awards to 809 graduating students of MPhil, MS Economics, MSc Economics (11), Masters in Business Administration (180), BSc Economics, Bachelors of Business Administration (600) and Master of Business Administration (Executive). Sardar Latif Khosa lauded the role of Lahore School of Economics in core specilization of Economics, Finance, Business Administration and related fields of studies including Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Environment, Media Studies and Art and Design. The Governor also notes the Lahore School of Economics Research Program that is focused on improving the economic well being of the people of Pakistan.

Earlier, Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, the Chairman and the Rector Lahore School of Economics presented annual report of the School and highlighted achievements during the academic year.

The Lahore School of Economics, Chartered in 1997, has the distinction of being the first private sector not-for-profit degree granting institution established by the Government of the Punjab. Since then we have matured to be an established institution of higher learning with a wide range of academic disciplines encompassing economics, business, finance, social sciences, media studies art and design, mathematics, statistics and environmental sciences at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels. The Lahore School has currently 3266 students in these disciplines with 66 doing their M.Phil and Ph.D, 457 doing their masters and 2643 completing a 4 years bachelors degree.

The Lahore School’s faculty and student body are also engaged in undertaking important research. The Lahore School publishes a two academic journals viz. a leading economics journal – The Lahore Journal of Economics – and an important policy studies journal – The Lahore Journal of Policy Studies. It is engaged in a number of international research studies including with Colombia and Yale Universities. The Lahore School also has hosted since 2004 an “Annual Conference on the Management of the Pakistan Economy” with the 8th Annual Conference now scheduled for May 2012.

The Lahore School’s Annual Conferences on the Management of the Pakistan Economy are significant in that they provide the theoretical basis for policy making. As an example I would like to place on record that it was at the Annual Conference in April 2008 that the Lahore School recommended that an appropriate security blanket for the poor would be an old age pension scheme of Rs.1000 per month for widows. A number of influential policy makers were at the conference and we would like to believe that it contributed in a small manner to the development of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) introduced in 2008-9 and which is widely acclaimed the world over. Incidentally that conference also recommended a school feeding and health care program in the field of education and hospitalization insurance coverage for serious illnesses in the health sector to complete a social security blanket for the poor. We hope sir, that you will consider these remaining two policy proposals to benefit the ordinary people of Pakistan in the future.

The Chairman thanked the Lahore School Board of Governors for their guidance and support. Dr Shahid Amjad Chaudhry also placed on record the services of Mr. M.A.K Chaudhry, who served as the Chairman, Board of Governors for 16 years and who recently passed away. His contributions to the development of this institution were immense.

The campus was very tastefully decorated and the Convocation was attended by a large number of parents.

Lahore School of Economics was declared runner up in the Global Investment Research Challenge (GIRC) hosted by CFA Institute at Avari Towers Karachi on January 2, 2012. This elite competition in finance takes place every year and Lahore School made its strong mark by securing second position in its very first participation among reputable business schools from all over Pakistan. The team of Lahore School of Economics comprised of Abdul Wahab (MBA II), Adam Zia (MBA II) Omair Anwar (MBA II), Rafia Pervaiz (MBA II) and Mahnoor Asif (BSc IV).

The purpose of this educational initiative by CFA institute is to promote best practices in equity research through mentoring and development of analytical, communication and presentation skills. The subject company this year was Engro Foods on which team Lahore School prepared an equity research report and subsequently the findings and recommendations were defended in a presentation that was made in front of top notch professionals from financial industry. Dr Nawazish Mirza, Associate Professor of Finance, was the mentor for Lahore School Team.

Dr Nawazish Mirza applauds this performance. He says that it’s a proud moment for Finance faculty at Lahore School and a remarkable achievement that Lahore School of Economics proved its quality in front of cream of financial crop. I am proud of our team that went through a rigorous process of training, financial modeling, analysis, report writing and finally presentation. We were confident to win but losing by marginal two marks is not bad for our first ever appearance, especially when we scored highest on the report. The team surely had hard times coping with me but I am sure the outcome has paid off for their hard work, frustration and sleepless nights. Let us not forget that they were simultaneously engaged in their regular semester assignments, quizzes, projects, exams etc.

Team Lahore School value their achievement in following words. “CFA Institute Research Challenge provided us an immense learning experience by the application of classroom knowledge in the real world, opportunity to network and interact with leading finance industry practitioners, and enabled us to build a strong brand name of LSE in the financial industry”

Alumni in the School

Blogging, or ‘the new marketing and business communication tool’ as it is sometimes referred to, definitely seems to be the future of the Pakistan corporate world. Lahore School blog started on September 2004, when the word blog was not much known, and has come a long way. This blog has become a source of inspiration for large number of Lahore School young scholars and senior faculty members to start their own blogs where they propagate their points of view, talk about topics of interest to themselves and meet like-minded individuals and or take the opportunity to explore subjects they are truly interested in.

The Lahore School Society of Literature organized its First Inter-Institution Short Story Writing Competition 2011 which was divided in two sessions: the first session, the competition itself, took place on Nov 16, 2011 at the SBS library. Twenty-one participants from eight different institutions from Lahore took part in the competition. The participants were shown a set of three issues (Labor, Patriotism, women) based photographs. Each student could choose any one of the photos to draw inspiration from and write a short story of 1000-1200 words. The entries have been sent to a panel of external judges for deliberation [Ali Rizvi (Pakistan Today), Bilal Tanveer (LUMS) and Miranda Hussain (Newsweek)].

Dr. Shahid Amjad Chaudhry, the Rector Lahore School of Economics welcomed the fresh students and gave an overview of the achievements of the School. The Lahore School of Economics - a distinguished seat of learning known for high quality teaching and research.

Most of the extra circular and co-academic activities in the School are conducted by the students themselves through different societies – Arts Society, Debating Society, Film and Media Club, Literature Society, Photography Society, Social Awareness Society, Sports Society and Welfare Society. All these societies were introduced to incoming class of 2015 who were dressed in black (boys) and red (girls) attires. Creative and very amusing announcements by Chishti and Aleeshay Khar and various performances by students of Lahore School also amused the audience that also included a large number of Alumni.

For new students, joining the Lahore School of Economics signals the moment of their initiation as students in an awesome environment. The Lahore School is a university that is proud of its students, faculty, green walkways, courtyards (and peacocks), libraries and computer laboratories. Creative and academic milieu in the Lahore School guarantees success - though certainly in part attributable to their hard work and intelligence. In fact, the Lahore School brings together inspired people who, together and individually, do remarkable things.

The School knows that students will embrace the good of this place. Starting right now, this place is yours. You are welcome!

Almost everyone would like to seek answers to the following if they are dabbling in securities markets. What are securities markets in generic terms, and in Pakistan? What is their structure in Pakistan as it prevails now and what are their dimensions? How securities markets operate in real world setting; what securities markets accomplish through their operations; how these operations impact on various segments of economy? What is financial regime; how it regulates market operations, and how effective it is? What is the state of financial system infrastructure supportive of market operations? How significant are these market operations and how good has been the performance thus far in whatever these markets do? What is the prognosis of securities markets and how it can be improved? Finally, how securities market compare with those in comparator countries.

This is the line of inquiry that has driven Dr. Shakil Faruqi to carry out this study - antecedents and perspectives. Dr. Shakil Faruqi has answered these questions in Financial System an Economics Development – Pakistan Volume II. How far this effort has succeeded, that is left to the readers to determine.
