Alessi is one of those companies which embodies a typical phenomenon of Italian industrial culture, namely that of “Italian Design Factories”.

Since time immemorial, the Alessi family has been firmly estabilished on Lake Orta. In this poor, narrow valley in the Italian Alps, close to Switzerland, a long-standing tradition in wood and metal handicraft has survived up to this day.

Within the Alessi company, design in the current sense of the term began to gain a foothold under the father Carlo, who drew on his training as an industrial designer in order to develop virtually all of the products which appeared in our catalogues between 1935 and 1945.

In the 1950s, Carlo took other his father as corporate general manager, giving up altogether his activity as a designer and increasingly relying on the contributions of freelance designers, in accordance with a practice which was to become typical of all "Italian Design Factories" To this day,

Alessi products are still considered as being handicraft items made with the aid of machines: by this It means that, even though it relies on contemporary, industrial technology and processing equipment, at depth their practice - the one believed they ought to stick to, their inherent attitude is still rooted in a handicraft culture.

Five years ago LVMH bought the 19-century trunk maker Moynat.

Moynat’s was founded in 1849 by Pauline Moynat, the daughter of a craftsman, quickly the brand gained a reputation for durability, lightweight, waterproof trunks designed with an inner curve to suit automobiles. Bernard Arnault hired the Indian designer Ramesh Nair.

The new collection itself is small but includes bags, wallets, briefcases, small leather goods and scarves.The palette, too is limited to ca carefully considered selection of ultra sophisticated tones.

Designed by Grete Jalk (1920-2006) in 1963, this Laminated Chair is regarded today as the Danish designer's best-known work. The chair, for which Jalk also created a companion side table, was realized in collaboration with the cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen. Although it won first prize in a competition organized by the British newspaper Daily Mail during the year of its inception, the chair never went into industrial production.

Dries Van Noten discovered the series of works by James Reeve entitled ‘Lightscapes’ when presiding over the fashion jury at the Festival d’Hyères in 2010. While viewing this series of photos, Dries Van Noten was inspired to incorporate the photographs into his collection for women for Spring-Summer 2012. The result of this collaboration of art meeting fashion are a group of dresses, shirts, skirts and accessories from Van Noten’s latest collection for women which will be displayed alongside James Reeve’s nightscape photos of cities such as Beirut, London, Las Vegas and Marseille.

On her travels around the globe, Lepère always scours whatever city she lands in for star pieces to add to her collection, so each one is imbued with a special story of how it fell into her hands. “The beautiful lacquered Japanese bowls are from Tokyo,” says the Belgian beauty, who has fronted campaigns for Missoni, Chanel and Peter Pilotto and been photographed by the likes of Patrick Demarchelier and Mario Testino.
