Rather than approaching the riverbanks as isolated sites, the walks encourage participants to understand the Neris Valley as an interconnected natural, cultural and historical landscape. Scientific knowledge is combined with embodied experience: participants learn to read the terrain, vegetation, water systems, habitats and traces of historical landscapes while observing ongoing urban transformations firsthand.

The walks also create a space for dialogue and critical reflection. Questions emerging directly from the places we visit often lead to broader discussions about urban planning, environmental and cultural heritage, public participation, and the future of Vilnius’s natural riverbanks.

In this sense, Discoveries Along the Neris is both an educational programme and a form of public urban research. It seeks to strengthen people’s capacity to observe, understand and interpret their environment — and to participate more knowledgeably in conversations about its future.

The series is curated by Dr Jekaterina Lavrinec, Laimikis.lt – Urban Games & Research Lab, in collaboration with researchers, local experts and partner organisations.

Why Explore the Neris Riverbanks Now?

These walks were prompted by development projects currently being planned in Vilnius that envisage urbanising natural riverbanks and expanding car infrastructure along the Neris. There is a risk of losing large fragments of the natural riverbank and many trees. But much more is at stake: the landscape structure of the Neris valley, its ecological connections and layers of history. As urban dwellers, we may also lose the chance to experience the river as a living natural environment within the city.

This is why it is important for us to get to know these places now: while they are still here. To see them not merely as areas designated on urban planning maps, but as an interconnected landscape with its own natural, cultural, and historical value.

Walk #1. Discovering the Lost Landscape of Tuskulėnai

In August 2026, together with park historian Dr Dainius Labeckis, we embarked on a kind of landscape detective investigation, searching for traces of the landscape park once created on the grounds of Tuskulėnai Manor. Part of the historic manor estate and its old park has long been neglected and largely forgotten. The park once included a pond with a small bridge. During the walk, we will explore the tradition of landscape parks in Lithuania. We looked at their design principles, maintenance, and place in Vilnius’s history.

Dr Dainius Labeckis is a historian, art historian, and researcher of park heritage. He is a member of the Lithuanian Society of Art Historians and ICOMOS. His doctoral dissertation, The Art of Gardens as a Space for the Expression of Romanticism: The Aesthetics of Lithuanian Manor Gardens and Parks from the Late 18th to the First Half of the 19th Century, examined the development and aesthetics of historic manor landscapes in Lithuania.

Walking as a method of urban research and critical thinking

Moving through a landscape allows us to notice what maps and individual photographs cannot reveal: the scale and topography of a place, its vegetation, the relationships between different parts of the landscape, its accessibility, and how the space is changing.

Experiencing places up close and on foot can also encourage us to take a closer look at the plans for their future. Why, for example, have the old, unused hangars still not been removed from the historic grounds of Tuskulėnai Manor? Why has the landscape park not been restored — a step that could organically extend the character of the neighbouring Rimties Park?

Instead, the chosen plan is to build a rowing facility with a 40-space car park immediately next to the river and to remove more than 300 trees from the park, around 200 of which have protected status. It is a difficult decision to understand: one that appears disconnected from its context and disregards the historical spirit of the place.

Educational Walks as an Exercise in Urban Imagination

The walk with the park historian also became an exercise in urban imagination. Learning to recognise the surviving traces of the former landscape park allowed participants not only to imagine Tuskulėnai Manor and its grounds as they once existed, but also to envision what this landscape could become in the future. Historical knowledge, combined with direct experience of the site, opened up possibilities for imagining the restoration of the landscape park and reconnecting the manor, its gardens, the riverbank and the Neris. In this sense, urban imaginaries are grounded in knowledge and lived experience of place: rather than imposing abstract visions onto a territory, they emerge from understanding what is already there, what has been lost, and what could be recovered.

During a walk with park historian Dr. Dainius Labeckis, we made our way down to the Neris River. One of the participants, Alevtina Guje, upon spotting the Tuskulėnai Manor rising above the trees, eloquently articulated the connection she perceived between the river, the landscape park, and the manor itself. Later, she used AI to generate visualizations illustrating this connection:

Walk #2. The Pulse of the Neris Riverbank: Underground Life

This time, we had a rare opportunity to learn about the springs and the geomorphological processes that shaped the Neris Valley from Dr Regina Morkūnaitė — a Doctor of Physical Sciences, local historian, and painter. She was accompanied by geographer dr Giedrė Godienė and microbiologist dr Vidmantas Januška.

The route extended from Šilas Bridge to the Žirmūnai Winter Port, near which a residential complex (Žirmūnai 3A) is currently being built on a site designated for recreational use.

Among the topics that we navigated were:

How did the Neris Valley form? How does groundwater move within it? Where do the springs come from? What processes spanning tens of thousands of years can be read in the present-day landscape of Vilnius?
Did you know that Vilnius’s first major streets were laid out along the paths of former streams and watercourses? Scientists (Daumantas Bauža) determined this by studying so-called “gravel corridors.”
Vilnius is characterised by terraces formed by melting glaciers—with several of them (three, perhaps?) clearly discernible in the Žirmūnai landscape. In this district, one can observe the different stages of the Neris River’s history. Due to groundwater dynamics and geological structure, the slopes of Žirmūnai are “alive” — actively changing!
It is also fascinating to consider how long it takes for a raindrop (or water from melting snow) to travel from a specific spot in the district to the riverbank slope in Žirmūnai.

Risks of losing natural riverbanks

During this trip, we encountered vehicular traffic that had already begun along the lower bank of the Neris River. This traffic is set to increase, as the municipality has granted a building permit for a gated residential complex comprising 100 apartments in the recreational zone. Another observation was the separation of pedestrians from the river by a bicycle path. Creating barriers between the walking lanes and rivers or ponds has become a typical urban planning mistake in Vilnius.

The habitats of hundreds of trees, shrubs, birds, animals, reptiles, and insects are being sacrificed to concrete surfaces and car traffic through recreational territory. Incidentally, we encountered small toads near the Winter Harbour during this walk.

Walks with representatives from various scientific fields allow one to experience the potential of these places firsthand and understand their transformations.  Furthermore, these educational walks often evolve — at the participants’ own initiative — into conversations about the planning system, public participation, and how to ensure that the areas defining the city’s uniqueness are managed responsibly, grounded in scientific knowledge and guided by public needs.

Baltic’s Past & Future: Uniting Our Heritage through New European Bauhaus Initiative

Activities of the project

This project aims to engage citizens through creative mapping, storytelling, artistic and participatory methods, helping them reinterpret local heritage through the lens of the New European Bauhaus and co-create ideas for more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful places. The project unfolds in two phases. First, raising awareness and connecting people through public events. Next, supporting citizens in developing concrete ideas together with local decision-makers.

In Lithuania, the first phase combines creative, place-based methods to engage diverse audiences with the cultural heritage of the wooden Šnipiškės neighbourhood and the principles of the New European Bauhaus. Public heritage walks, storytelling sessions and the urban game Urbingo invite participants of different ages to explore local history through active participation and shared experiences.

In autumn, Laimikis will organise a series of experiential heritage walks in cooperation with Vilnius TECH. These activities invite students to observe, discuss and reinterpret urban heritage and the principles of the New European Bauhaus through dialogue, creative reflection and collaborative learning.

• Students become actively engaged with the New European Bauhaus as a practical framework for analysing and shaping urban environments.
• New ideas, observations and community perspectives are collected to inform the project’s subsequent co-design activities.
• Stronger connections are being established among local communities, higher education, and participatory urban practices.

Preplanned long-term impact

We seek the following impact: by combining heritage interpretation with creative and experiential learning, the project will foster a broader understanding of the New European Bauhaus values of sustainability, inclusion and beauty. Cooperation with Vilnius TECH will help embed these ideas into higher education, creating a lasting link between academic learning, civic engagement and local urban transformation.

Concept
The project connects climate awareness with cultural experience, shifting the focus from passive learning to active participation and agency. It brings together cultural history, environmental perception, and regenerative thinking to transform eco-anxiety into meaningful engagement. At its core, the project positions museums not only as knowledge institutions but as democratic platforms for co-creation and societal change.

Activities & Methods
The project is built on co-creative and research-based processes, including:

• participatory workshops with young people
• exploration of local landscapes and cultural histories
• sensory and immersive practices (observing, interpreting environments)
• international collaboration and exchange across partner countries
• masterclasses on regenerative learning and co-creation

A pre-study phase maps youth motivations, participation patterns, and conditions for engagement (trust, access, agency), ensuring that activities are grounded in real-life contexts.

Lithuanian case: biodiversity learning

In Lithuania, the project is implemented in the park of Markučiai Manor, where schoolchildren engage with the site as a living ecosystem. Through guided exploration, they investigate the park’s biodiversity while developing sensory awareness and environmental understanding.

The programme introduces place-based environmental education, combining exploration of local flora, fungi, and landscape elements with sensory observation and collective reflection. It combines arts-based and participatory methods: participants develop basic acting skills, create masks inspired by non-human inhabitants, and apply the Council of All Beings method. By speaking from the perspective of the park’s dwellers (such as trees, stones, or fungi), they explore alternative viewpoints, practice more-than-human storytelling and cultivate empathy towards the environment and its actors.

Format: While many Lithuanian cities copy the brilliant installation “I am Amsterdam”, we created a solution that empowers residents not only to bring visibility to their neighbourhoods, but also to arrange and rearrange spaces for community meetings. This solution is especially instrumental in open spaces that lack comfortable furniture, as letters create temporal structures, turning space into a place.

Characteristics: mobile, light yet stable, suitable for sitting and jumping on. Check our Typographic Placemaking Set at Behance. For different environments, we create distinct configurations, making each set and place unique.

Case: The very 1st letter set we produced for the historic district of Šnipiškės in 2013. The task was to bring visibility to the historic district, which had remained ignored for decades and lacked basic infrastructure and public spaces. Format: Training in Creative Cartography and Storytelling for schoolchildren;
Additionally, a special cartography tool (game) can be designed. It is instrumental for integrating creative cartography and storytelling into schools’ or gymnasium’s modules. The design of the tool requires 2 extra months.
Skills developed: desk research, field research, arranging and conducting interviews, documentation, visualisation, cartography, storytelling.
Training period: from two weeks to 2 months.

Case.  Title: Discover Pabradė – a learning module, workshops and a cartography tool for accumulating and sharing knowledge about the town of Pabradė.

Client: Pabradė “Ryto” Gymnasium | TŪM – National Education Progress Program “Millenium Schools” (Nacionalinė šviešimo pažangos programa Tūkstantmečio mokyklos).

Target / Audience: 7th and 8th-grade schoolchildren.

Challenge/task: To develop a learning module and a game tool involving arts and music school teachers (informatics and Lithuanian language as additional subjects) and use the outcomes of schoolchildren’s activities with the history teacher. Previously, schoolchildren attended and learned about various regional institutions with their teachers. They also performed small research on the historical objects in the town. However, this gathered knowledge is fragmented (as every small group focused on its object) and needs a tool for activation. For this task, we only had 3.5 months and very limited resources.

Solution:
The learning module “Become Pabradė’s Cartographer and Guide!” consists of:
1. Training for the teachers, exploring the possibilities to connect the subjects of the formal school program to the non-formal “Discover Pabradė” activities. It embraces such topics and tasks as “Discovering Pabradė’s soundscape. Exploring the use of natural and industrial soundscape in composing”, “Pabradė’s textures and ornaments. Exploring artistic techniques”, “Storytelling around Pabradė’s elements”, and “Coding the discoveries about Pabradė”.  The modules’ tasks and topics were developed by dr. Jekaterina Lavrinec.

2. Training for schoolchildren “Pabradės’ Identity: Creative Maps, Games and Visual Codes, which consists of short lectures, creative workshops, and individual and group tasks. During lectures, we:
– overviewed the characteristics essential for the city’s identity and how these characteristics can be turned into games;
– introduced the techniques of creative mapping;
– discussed the visual coding techniques for the city’s essential elements.
During the 1st workshop, schoolchildren mapped places, objects, activities, sounds and other elements essential to the identity of Pabradė. During the 2nd workshop, schoolchildren learned how to turn these elements into visual signs.
During the independent task “Become Pabradė’s guide”, schoolchildren researched picked objects and places of Pabradė, creating profiles of those places.

3. Laimikis.lt team analysed the materials collected during the workshops and the outcomes of the independent tasks and developed a matrix for the cartography of Pabradė based on these materials. The invited designers contributed to the design of the final product. As a rule, in our practice, we seek long-term sustainable results. Despite the limited resources, we produced a tangible product which will serve generations of schoolchildren.

4. Final workshop with Pabradė’s “Ryto” Gymnasium Schoolchildren consisted of two parts:
– Preparing Pabradė’s profiles (puzzle figures) for the mapping game.
– Testing the mapping game by connecting various Pabradė’s places through sounds, architecture, nature, history, culture, activities, moods, etc.
– Testing the mapping game nr. 2 – “Reveal the Location!”, during which the players try to guess the hidden Pabradė’s place through its characteristics and facts about it. We tested it with three classes, which allowed us to evaluate the result :)

After our part was finished, the schoolchildren arranged the conference, during which the participants presented the mapping process and their findings from their own perspective – coordinated by Zita Daškevičienė. Here is the presentation focused on the cartography experience by schoolchildren E. Vonsovič & J. Bulyčeva.

A cartography matrix (set) consists of :
– Magnet board with the matrix and legend for the cartography
– Set of 6 types of amazingly looking magnet cards: Pabradė’s Places, What this place is interesting for, Pabradė’s Sounds, Pabradė’s Activities, Pabradė’s Colours, Pabradė’s Moods.
– Set of more miniature puzzle figures, each representing a profile of a specific Pabradė’s place, including sounds, activities, colours, moods, and the parameter “what place is interesting for”.

While building the program, we combined the perspectives of the residents and cooperatives with the perspectives of education and culture institutions (universities and museums), heritage specialists, and municipalities.

The topics covered during the 1st seminar: How do communities manage renovating the wooden heritage and building new wooden houses? How is a decision-making process arranged in smaller and bigger communities? What do community members contribute to their neighbourhood? How do cooperatives get and manage financial resources to keep wooden houses in good condition and to develop the neighbourhood?

The topics covered during the 2nd seminar are: What programs are dedicated to craftsmenship and maintaining the wooden houses in Norway, Finland, and Lithuania? What adjustments are needed to make these programs more effective from the perspective of the residents? What support do museums, universities, municipalities, and national centers provide to communities living in the heritage sites? How do communities build networks with institutions and specialists from different fields?

Co-urbanism brings together urban practitioners, researchers, community leaders, community artists, and policymakers to share methods and practices in the cooperative cultural development of urban spaces.  In 2024, a Co-urbanism seminar was arranged under the WoodiSH research project, which studies circular skills of the inhabitants of the historic wooden neighbourhoods.

Title: Zero Hero (educational game for schoolchildren, developing circular skills).

Client: Antakalnis City Lab. This organisation promotes zero waste movement involving various age groups.

Challenge/task: How can circular skills and recycling become entertaining for schoolchildren? A task was to develop a learning format that educators could use with groups of children (7-11 years).

Solution: A set of play cards to play in teams led by the educators. We divided the topic of zero-waste into five fields — recycling, composting, plants, renewable energy, and cooperation with neighbours — and developed subtopics and questions for each field. The educational game ZERO HERO sparks a conversation between school kids and teachers about ecology, a no-waste lifestyle, and a conscious, nature-friendly environment. Because of the illustrations (by Agnė Lasinskienė), the subtopics have a wide range of interpretations.

A game set consists of 5 topic cards and 50 cards, most of which fit several zero-waste topics. It also includes a list of orientational questions for educators.

How it works:

1. Children are divided into teams of 3 to 6 players;
2. Cards are divided equally among players. Depending on the number of players, everyone gets 1-5 cards. Players in teams help each other. The goal is to eliminate all the cards in the team.
3. The game master (educator) picks one of five topic cards and, asks open questions concerning the picked topics, and opens the topic on the table with a short introduction. Then, the game master asks a question about the topic (e.g., Can you grow veggies in the city? Where can you do that? etc.).
4. Players should find and give the card that corresponds with the answer to this question or topic. Players should explain each card – why does one think it answers the question?
5. If the game master approves the answer, the card is thrown away.
6. The team that gets rid of all the cards first is the winner – ZERO HERO.

Project goal:

The project aims to create a street art network between Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. A network will benefit street art operators and street artists in Finland and the Baltics by establishing new professional relationships. In addition, a cooperative network will also create job opportunities for street artists, and enrich regional street culture festivals by introducing new artists and creators.

This game helps explore and learn about cultural heritage in a playful way: we developed Urbingo as a matrix for collecting and arranging neighbourhood stories and changing material culture, turning it into an actively used archive. It is a tool for activating interest in rapidly changing neighbourhoods and their stories, and for encouraging citizen participation in gathering valuable empirical data on the material culture of these neighbourhoods. Like many card games, Urbingo is an effective non-formal learning method.

Where to play: We have developed several versions of the Urbingo game for various sites. While the game exists as an analogy, we are in the process of launching the online platform.

Žaidimas-gidas URBINGO skirtas aktyviam miesto rajonų pažinimui, ieškant smagių vaizdų ir vertingos informacijos apie savo ir kitus rajonus. Žaidimas kviečia tapti kaimynijų paslapčių atradėjais ir leistis į naujų vietų ir patirčių medžioklę. Įdomūs faktai ir užduotys paskatins atidžiau dairytis paslėptų detalių net gerai pažįstamame rajone. Žaisti smagiausia 2-5 žmonių grupėje, bet gali būti naudojamas ir individualiai – kaip ir gidas, kurio pagrindą sudaro teksto kortelės.

Žaidimą sudaro:
• Žemėlapis. Jis aprėpia visą žaidimo-gido teritoriją. Žemėlapyje esantys taškai žpildomi žaidimo metu. Kiekvienas taškas turi jam skirtą vaizdo ir teksto kortelę ir numerį.
• Vaizdo kortelės. Tai besikeičiančio rajono foto albumas ir kvietimas aplankyti rajono vietas. Kiekvienai vaizdo kortelei skirtas savo taškas rajono žemėlapyje. Atsitiktiniu būdu ištraukę kelias vaizdo korteles, gaunate vis naujus maršrutus.
• Teksto kortelės. Jose pateikiami faktai apie rajono istoriją, vietas ir elementus. Kiekviena teksto kortelė atitinka vieną ar kelias vaizdo korteles ir sugrupuoja jas pagal temas (pvz. „Mediniai sandėliukai“). Ieškokite teksto kortelių iliustracijų pagal numerius, nurodytus vaizdo kortelėse.

Fiksuok rajono pokyčius

URBINGO unikalumą sudaro ne tik tai, kad jis derina savyje orientacinį žaidimą ir gidą, bet ir tai, jog jis yra skirtas besikeičiantiems miestų rajonams. Pirmasis URBINGO leidimas skirtas medinėms Šnipiškėms. Šis rajonas pasirinktas neatsitiktinai: medinės Šnipiškės išgyvena intensyvių pokyčių periodą, ir nykstanti 19 a. rajono architektūra kartu su savitu gyvenimo būdu ir unikaliais architektūriniais kontrastais, verti plačios publikos dėmesio. Šio žaidimo-gido tikslas – paskatinti aktyvų miestiečių dalyvavimą, ieškant vertingos informacijos apie savo rajoną. Tai yra įrankis, kuris leidžia paversti vizualinę ir tekstinę informaciją apie rajonus aktyviai naudojamu ir nuolat pildomu archyvu.

Kaimynų diena ir Kultūros naktys: Urbingo testavimas ir premjera

Šnipiškiečiai Urbingo žaidimą išbandė jau trejus metus vykstančios Kaimynų iškylos metu. Dalis rajonų gyventojų puikiai pažįsta savo gatvės ir kasdienių maršrutų elementus, tačiau kitose gatvėse esantys objektai dalyvius intrigavo.

Birželio pabaigoje šį žai­di­mą iš­ban­dė „Kul­tū­ros Nak­ties“ ren­gi­nių ieš­ko­to­jai: su­da­ly­va­vo 27 ko­man­dos. Di­džio­ji da­lis žai­džian­čių po me­di­nių Šni­piš­kių gat­ves ir kie­mus klai­džio­jo pir­mą kar­tą. „Kai į to­kį ra­jo­ną pa­ten­ki, kaip į žai­di­mo te­ri­to­ri­ją, nie­kas ne­atro­do pa­vo­jin­ga – at­virkš­čiai – jaus­mas toks, tar­si vaikš­čio­tum po žai­di­mų par­ką“, – sa­vo pir­muo­ju įspū­džiu iš­ban­džius „Ur­bin­go“ da­li­no­si so­cia­li­nių ino­va­ci­jų kū­rė­jas iš Hel­sin­kio Jaak­ko Blom­berg. Šį kartą į žaidimą įtraukėme trečdalį medinių Šnipiškių teritorijos.

Didysis Urbingo žaidimas

Liepos 24 d. buvo organizuotas Didysis Urbingo žaidimas – į kurį įtraukiama visa medinių Šnipiškių teritorija. Žaidimo kortelės traukiamos burtų būdu, todėl lengviausias maršrutas užtruko apie 50 minučių, o sudėtingesnis – iki dviejų valandų.

Apsilankė ir LRT “Labas rytas” komanda (žurnalistė Ieva Balsiūnaitė + operatorius Gediminas Zalieckas):
Reportažas apie pirmąją Urbingo versiją, skirtą unikaliam ir sparčiai besikeičiančiam medinių Šnipiškių rajonui – su kelių žaidėjų komentarais ir paties žaidimo epizodais! Nuo 29:45.

22 komandos, 67 dalyvių, 54 atrastos Šnipiškių vietos! Tarp dalyvių buvo ir Šnipiškių gyventojų, kurie subūrė savo komandas. Tačiau didžioji dalis dalyvių atvyko iš kitų Vilniaus rajonų – Lazdynų, Fabijoniškių, Žirmūnų, Karoliniškių. Išbandę žaidimą, siūlė sukurti jų rajonams skirtas “Urbingo” versijas.
