First was Inger's knitting themed cupcakes, nothing too girly, but all about the knit! She seemed to approve and thought they were great!

Next was Kim's hen party - the theme colours were black and pink & so we had hearts, flags, knickers & bras and one sparkly engagement ring - all in icing of course!

Finally it was Princess Yema's birthday and my oh my did her party venue look beautiful.

Happy February everyone!

New year favourites!

2013-01-13T23:01:00.000+00:00

This is my favourite so far, yes really 13 days into the New Year and this is my favourite!

I always love making something new and having to think around an idea, but this one kept on challenging me. I wanted it to be fun, and a little bit cute - but to be serious swimming too! I loved how it worked out, I really did.

It made me smile!

Christmas III

2012-12-10T23:28:00.004+00:00

Today was Christmas cupcakes galore! Every single one was Chriss-cringle fun! I loved making them! It's coming to the end of term at school, so many of the orders this week and next are as 'thank you's' for teachers. I do hope they like them and consider them a worthy thank you and treat.

They are vanilla cupcakes (made with real vanilla and vanilla sugar) topped with fluffy butter cream frosting and then a sugar paste disc with the Christmas themed toppers, hand made on top!

Then ... sprinkled with a little fairy glitter dust, just to add that Christmas sparkle.

So, here they are...

For Gems, with love x

Christmas II

2012-12-10T19:40:00.001+00:00

So Christmas cupcakes abound!! This week it was 50 Christmas themed cupcakes for the staff at my local school.

There were buttercream topped cupcakes like Christmas Trees, which I love & then some simple Christmas themed toppers, with little red hearts - they looked v. cute!

More Christmas cupcakes in the oven now... I'll keep you posted!

2012-10-19T20:45:00.000+01:00

Georgia is going to be 4 and apparently she wanted a Rapunzel cake ... so that is what she got! It sat in the office all day waiting to be collected!

I hope she liked it!!

It was a double layer vanilla sponge, with homemade strawberry jam, soft fluffy buttercream frosting & sugar paste.

Delish!

Happy Birthday Georgia!

Snappy Crocodiles and pussy cats!

2012-09-19T21:28:00.004+01:00

Apparently for the last year and a half this is all Cleo has asked for. She's four.

The birthday cake she wanted was of a crocodile (from the Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl) - according to her mother: "I think he is about to eat, or have a good chew, of a cat." Oh yes, that's what she wanted.

...and that is what she got!

You should have seen her face when I delivered it and she took the lid off the box - it was priceless! I think I got it right!

Happy Birthday Cleo!

2012-09-07T19:54:00.000+01:00

There comes a time in every girls life when they realise that bags and shoes are the stuff of dreams! Charlotte turned 13 today and her mum asked for a handbag cake in her favourite colour, purple.

Happy Birthday Charlotte!

Komeh turned two and wanted a yellow and pink cake with flowers! So that is exactly what she got! I hope she liked it and had a wonderful second birthday with her brother and sister and Mum and Dad.

The cake was a vanilla sponge sandwiched with strawberry jam, no buttercream as her mum doesn't like it ... not one little bit!

Dolly Brights for Donna x

2012-08-31T15:56:00.000+01:00

This weekend is a friends 40th birthday party. The theme is fancy dress (anything or anyone beginning with the letter D) and BRIGHTS!

Donna asked me to make cupcakes for the party & they needed to be bright & like a kids party - so FUN FUN FUN!

So first I baked 5 batches of 24 cupcakes!

in multi coloured cupcake cased... pretty!

When they had cooled, I added a soft vanilla buttercream filling to each and every one ... one at a time, all 100!

Then it was time to add the tops ... 100 little round discs in lots of different colours... then I added a swirl in candy melts & topped it with a Dolly Mixture!

Fun was had by all!

They were all laid out on the table so that I could mix and match the colour toppings & swirls!

Pinks, oranges...

Blues & yellow...

Green and yellow...

100s of them!

Now boxed & ready for the party tomorrow!

Phew!

The print that became a cake...

2012-07-29T21:43:00.001+01:00

I have a wonderful friend, who is an amazing artist. Wonderful print maker & just fantastically gifted. Her prints are quirky, fun, humorous and very individual and different, I love them.

Check her out for yourself at: http://www.sarahjanehudson.co.uk

... it's her birthday this week and over the weekend she was having an open house party which I was invited to. Bring a bottle she said - shall I bring cake I asked? I decided that I would as it was her birthday coming up and then had a little 'light bulb' moment!

One of the prints of hers that I love is this:

To me, it's so calm and serene and just beautiful & if she hadn't sold the two editions I would have loved to own one!

So I took this wonderful print & turned it into my own variation of a piece of art ... cake art!!

Needless to say she recognised it as 'her own' and we promptly ate it admiring both our skills all the way!

Happy Birthday Sarah! x

Teachers Thank you's

2012-07-22T13:22:00.001+01:00

Last year it was mini cakes, the year before that cookies, this year I decided to make brownies & slab & box 'em as thank you's for the teachers.

Each teacher received a square of brownie (about 10cm x 10cm) boxed and bowed from each of my children. I ended up making about 40 by the time various friends heard about this idea and asked me to make them for them too!

They'd be perfect in the post too! So a real winner all round!

Happy Summer Hols everyone!

An apple for the teacher!

2012-07-12T22:41:00.000+01:00

It's nearing the end of term and as usual, some staff are off to pastures new! One Headteacher kindly asked me if I would bake a cake to celebrate the good times that a member of staff has contributed to the school and to say thank you and farewell to her, before she goes off to take on her first Headship.

It was tough thinking how to decorate this one, I didn't want to go too over the top or too obvious. The cake is to be presented in a big assembly and so too much tiny detail would be lost and no one would really be able to see it. So I had a think and came up with this ...

The cake is a quadrooooople (four layer!) vanilla sponge with strawberry jam & vanilla buttercream frosting in between. The cake was then covered in sugar paste & decorated.

The cupcakes are vanilla cupcakes with vanilla buttercream frosting on top.

Hope she likes it!

Now you see it, now you don't ...

2012-07-06T23:29:00.002+01:00

I love making cakes, I really do! I particularly like making chocolate ones, because then I can happily eat them after. Please don't ask me to make fruit cake - I don't like it, so won't make it! :-) x

Today I made chocolate cupcakes, with the softest whippy-est chocolate buttercream frosting on top! They were divine! ...and to finish them off ... I added a chocolate covered donut!

Enjoy ... I did!

(Happy Birthday Dom!)

Mojito Cupcakes!

2012-06-10T19:29:00.000+01:00

Mojito cupcakes!

Excuse the measurements - I work in an old fashioned way - from my mums recipes! Therefore they stick in my head like they were originally written in the 1970's!

4oz slightly salted butter
4oz plain flour
4oz caster sugar
2tsp baking powder
2 large free range/ organic eggs
zest of one lime

Heat the oven to 180 degrees.
Bung the whole lot into a mixer & mix for about 3-4 minutes (none of this creaming nonsense for me!)
Line 12-16 muffin/cupcake tins with cupcake/muffin cases.
Put 2 mini ice cream scoops of mix into each case.
Pop them in the oven & bake for 15-18 minutes.
Take out of the oven, once baked & place on to a wire rack to cool.

FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING:

500grammes of slightly salted butter
1lb of icing sugar
1 table spoon (or 2 ... to taste) Tequila
4 shredded & diced mint leaves
1 table spoon lime juice

Put it all into the mixer & beat for a good 5 minutes until it's lovely & whippy & soft!
When the cakes are cool, pipe the buttercream frosting onto the cupcakes.
Finish with a wedge of lime, roll in granulated sugar & pop in a straw!

Cheers!

Chocolate overload cake!

More lovely cakes made this month (Feb/March) for various celebratory people! I think the knitting one was the most fun & the chocolate overload I always love to do! Writing on the chocolate discs was a first, using candy melts - they worked a treat (for once!!!).

a mixture of cakes!

2012-02-25T11:01:00.001+00:00

There were a number of cakes I was asked to make through February! First was Yemas 8 shaped heart cake. Her birthday is on valentines day so her mum wanted a heart theme! It was fun to do and looked so pretty when it was finished.

A heart themed cake for a valentines birthday girl

Next was a cross country themed party! This was a hard one to work out but once I had the idea executing it was fun! The path is made from crushed chocolate chip cookies and the trees/bushes from vanilla cookies with royal icing piped on top!

Cross country running cake with crushed biscuit path & cookie trees & bushes!

Next was a knitting themed cake for a 90th birthday! The bottom cake is a vicky sponge, then I had to make a ball of cake, from crumbed cake & buttercream frosting mixed together, the 'wool' was made from individual strands of icing pushed through my cookie gun!!! I like this one!

Knitting cake = ball of wool is completely edible too! Made with a ball of cake & covered in tubes of icing!

Another try at cake pops, this time balls, for an athletics themed party! These went amazingly wrong at first & then (thank goodness) got better, so by the end I had 17 that looked good and were ready to go!

Box of vanilla cake pops - athletics theme - so all balls!

So that's all for this month ... wonder what March will bring!
