A Disservice

Comment: Suppose someone in my environment outside the group has a Hisaron (deficiency or need), and I want to help them, to fulfill their need. We are supposed to help people, aren’t we?

My Response: By advancing toward spirituality, we draw the upper light upon ourselves, and through us, it spreads to the entire world; that is where true help lies. Everything else is harm.

How can you help? You can see how welfare benefits can sometimes undermine a person. You can see how prisons often make those inside worse than before. A prison becomes a school for criminals or terrorists, depending on who is there.

Where have you seen society truly benefit from good intentions alone? For you, “doing good” means giving. But giving, when it relates only to egoism, can become harmful. Then you create various systems that simply drain resources without correcting anything.

Why do you assume that the desire to receive should simply receive? This contradicts the fundamental law of nature. If you merely fulfill the desire to receive, you only worsen the situation. You cause harm and lower it into the Klipot. In doing so, you bring troubles upon the whole world.

Take a child, for example, and indulge him in everything, fulfill all his desires. What will become of him? You will simply ruin him.

The upper governance operates through the right and left lines in order to guide a person correctly and teach him how to use both forces and maintain the correct balance between them. But to simply give without discernment can be very damaging; it is a disservice.

The Group Is the Upper

How can the group feel that it needs the effort of every friend? It is much easier to work on the principle of “myself in relation to the group,” and much harder to work from the side of the group relative to each person.

Baal HaSulam writes that a person must be concerned with spiritual flourishing and feeling gratitude to the Creator for twenty-three and a half hours a day, and only after this to dedicate half an hour to critical analysis.

It is the same here. We must analyze the contribution of the friends to the group only after we have unequivocally made efforts to understand the concept known as the “group.”

Once we perceive it as a spiritual concept and share a mutual understanding of what it entails, then we can discuss, at a gathering of the friends, how to evoke an extra measure of effort from everyone and how we can lift up the group.

Ultimately, we will not make demands of any individual: “Why are you not bringing benefit to the group?” Instead, we will hold ourselves, the group as a whole, accountable for failing to bring people come to the correct understanding that they contribute to the group and integrate with it heart and soul, or they see that they are outside the group.

In that case, if they remain present despite clearly standing outside and opposite to the group, then either they leave on their own or they are removed.

In spirituality, when you look at a person from the group’s perspective, the group is upper relative to that individual. And the upper must awaken the lower. If he cannot awaken the lower, then he leaves him be; and if he leaves him, it means the lower does not belong to the upper.

According to the Measure of Connection with the Creator

How can one begin to feel a Hisaron (lack) for the Creator again while in a state of descent (if you have fallen into a bad state and lost contact with Him and no longer feel the connection? The only way is to persist in your study with the group, and through by coming to the friends and including yourself in them, you again return to yourself the connection with the group, your connection with the Creator.

We have the opportunity to accelerate this process. Above all, one must not fall due to slipping into the sensation of animalistic pleasures, that is, enjoying the ascent rather than the connection with the Creator. One must not commit a sin in the ascent.

And how does one avoid sinning during an ascent? It is by constantly striving to increase one’s awareness of the greatness of the Creator with the help of the group. In this way, it is as if you are constantly maintaining a sense of Hisaron; you add a yearning for the Creator through the group that allows you to advance further.

And if a descent does occur, as it inevitably will, it is not your fault because you were constantly striving to receive an increase in desire from your environment. You were increasingly motivated to ascend, and to ascend not merely in terms of sensation, but in unification with the Creator.

Then your descent is not experienced simply as the loss of a “good state”; rather, you define the descent as a loss of connection and contact with the Creator. That is why it is painful for you. You measure ascents and descents no longer according to sensations, but according to the measure of connection with the Creator.

How Can One Add a Desire for the Creator to the Group a Desire?

Question: Is it possible to give something to the group while in a state of descent?

Answer: If you are in a descent without completely losing your connection to the Creator, meaning, that even in the descent you know that you have lost connection with Him and it is precisely this that you lack, then in such a state you add a Hissaron (deficiency) to the group for contact with the Creator, and the group benefits from your descent. It now has unfulfilled desires.

If, however, you have fallen like an animal, simply feel bad, and are only under the influence of this sensation, this is also an addition. It means that soon you will have a recognition of evil.

But still, this addition is not spiritual. Through the group and through efforts, you will gradually rework this addition into a spiritual Hisaron, a Hisaron for the Creator. But that is a long journey.

A Group Committed to the Right Goal

Question: You say that all the work of acquiring Hisaron and building the Kli must take place through bestowal to the group. But what if I am in the company of a person who does not have spiritual attainment?

Answer: We are not talking about spiritual attainment. The society should be a group of people striving for the right goal. They do not know exactly what this goal is, are not in attainment, and are not excited by it. But they study together, gather, participate in various activities, and devote their free time to the group.

Then I can check whether this group is suitable for my advancement, whether I can advance toward the goal together with it. If I cannot inspire it, and move it from its place, then perhaps I need to think about a suitable replacement. Maybe I even take a few friends with me and leave, and let the others continue their life in the “nursing home.” And we will continue the path forward.

Multiply the Group’s Collective Strength

To what extent do I connect myself to the group’s collective strength? Only to the extent I replenish it through my own efforts toward the goal.

To that extent, I establish a connection and can draw upon my friends’ ascent to use the collective spiritual force known as the group. By using the common strength, I am in fact adding to the group.

Spiritually, no matter how much you take, you only strengthen the whole; it does not weaken. This is not so in the corporeal world. In spirituality, a person “lights a candle from the candle” of another. This does not mean the first one is left with less. By lighting their candle, the second person adds its glow to the first, until a blazing bonfire ignites.

The situation is such that multiplying the collective strength reinforces it further, and accordingly, we perceive the reality of the group, the environment.

Moreover, as we work on this, we begin to feel everyone, we feel to what extent they invest themselves and how much they are able to invest given their current form. Outwardly, one can be quiet and modest, and can even, perhaps, look lazy, but then we begin to sense the magnitude of their contribution. We already see the work of everyone’s soul.

Question: So the one who takes is contributing?

Answer: Certainly, you take strength from the group to advance. You cannot take anything from this force except the benefit of advancing in the same direction; otherwise, it will not help you in any way.

After all, it is the force of striving for the Creator, directed at Him. You cannot take it and use it for something else; it will not work. Therefore, we see that those who fails to use this flow is evading the work, which means they neither take from it nor contribute to it.

Connect with Other Souls

Question: If I am in a state of powerlessness, despair, fatigue and I see a friend who is in a similar situation, how will this help me?

Answer: I can influence his fatigue and weakness; I can awaken and inspire him. I am capable of this, even if it is a game. You cannot influence yourself, but you can influence a friend.

There are people in the group who constantly encourage everyone. They shout: “Come on! Move it!” This quality is very useful within the group. One can jokingly compare such a person to an army warrant officer, someone who leaves an impression on you.

Our egoism has all the necessary attributes to influence others from a specifically egoistic side. And then this returns to me, and affects me. What I am unable to bring about within myself becomes possible through egoism. This is a special opportunity. You cannot simply influence yourself directly; it happens only through an external selective influence, provided you have control over these actions.

This is a truly unique phenomenon. It is precisely for this reason that the breaking of the Kelim occurred. After all, you acquire Avсhanot (inner definitions) between yourself and those around you. There are 600,000 souls, and at the boundaries between them, that is, at the edges between these cells, you find new definitions from which your spiritual body called Adam (man) is built.

It is not built from the souls themselves, but from the inner definitions that you receive through uniting with them. The connection itself occurs at the boundaries between the souls.

This can be explained as follows: I do not receive pleasure when I am very hungry or when I am already full. I feel pleasure in the middle of the process, when I am hungry from within, but on my tongue I feel the taste of food, that is, at the boundary between light and darkness. All inner definitions are acquired in the process of fulfilling the desire.

Therefore the division and unification of the parts of souls in this form builds a new Kli that the Creator did not originally create. You gather all the attributes obtained in the process of connecting with the other parts of the collective soul. From this, a new Kli is formed that previously did not exist. This new Kli is based on the shared facets of the souls in their connection with each other.

Attitude Toward the Group

Question: What does it mean to work in the group in different states?

Answer: I must see the group in the state I want to be in myself. I must bring it to this, and then I will receive the same state from it.

If we were business partners and I ensure that everyone becomes wealthy, then I too would become wealthy. There is a condition here. If you think only about yourself, then you will not become rich, but if you think about your partners, you will, because in this way you acquire their Kelim, their wealth, their property. And with this you enter spirituality.

Question: At what pace can we artificially advance the group?

Answer: Everything that we do against our desire seems artificial to us, but these are not artificial actions. This is how it must be.

Question: How often must I inspire the friends?

Answer: Constantly, without interruption. You should not rest until the entire group is inspired.

Question: By what actions can I include a friend in myself, and unite with him?

Answer: These are very simple actions. Do toward the group what you would want it to do to you. One sentence. Look at how simple the words are that I use, as if explaining to children.

If outsiders from the street heard us, they would be surprised by our conversation. Listen to the recording of the lesson again, and you will see that without inner content, it creates the impression that we have a kindergarten here. Do not do to another what is not good for you, do to him what you desire for yourself.

Attack in the Heart

Answer: Ourselves, our heart, our laziness, our pride, and our old habits. I must rise above all these calculations.

The main thing is to dissolve among the friends and intentionally push myself into the group. That is where I want to be all the time. I want to lose my personal mind and personal feeling; I want to receive the mind and feeling of all the friends. It is as though I lose myself in them by my own will.

Spiritual Miscarriage

Question: What means can prevent a “spiritual miscarriage”?

Answer: In our world, in order to avoid miscarriage, one should visit a doctor, get examined, and follow all of the doctor’s instructions. On our path, we must do everything that nature requires for the embryo’s full development. You protect the embryo, not its mother.

The development of the embryo is the spiritual development in you. Do you fear miscarriage? Then take part in your spiritual development.

The cause of miscarriage lies in the mismatch between the mother’s body and the development of the spiritual body. Something happens between them until it becomes a piece of flesh and dies in relation to the mother.

Among us, this happens if a person does not take part in his spiritual development.

Leap Over Obstacles

Question: Where do we get the strength to overcome all the obstacles?

Answer: On the way to spirituality, we must pass through many obstacles. You say that these are apparently very difficult obstacles because we want to move from the material world into the spiritual one.

So the obstacles must be very formidable, like in the story about people climbing a high mountain. The higher they climbed, the steeper and harder the path became, and the more cruelly the guards threw them down.

There is a very simple solution to this: obstacles only seem large in the eyes of the will to receive, but as soon as you switch to actions with the selfless intention “for the sake of bestowal,” all the obstacles instantly disappear. They are not actually so big. You do not have to climb over them. You do not have to break them. And you will not be able to do that with your will to receive anyway.

You must adopt a different attitude toward the obstacles, accept them in the opposite form, and then they disappear. It is said: “Look closely at them, and they will turn out to be a heap of bones.” The approach to obstacles should not be the same as they appear in the will to receive. The attitude must be different, from the side, and then all the obstacles fall away. But if you look at them through the will to receive, then of course they seem enormous.

Question: But how do you look at obstacles differently? How do you connect them with the goal?

Answer: If a goal is set before a person, then he must go “by faith above reason.” It is very simple: connect with the higher force, with the desire to bestow, with the group that will help you rise a little above this obstacle.

In other words, do not force your way through, but leap over the obstacle. The leap itself does not take much strength. It is more of a psychological problem than a spiritual one.

Mutual Support

Working on the group’s charter is very beneficial, but everyone needs to examine themselves. There is also another issue here: if I were to say now that it is necessary to work on this, you would spend all your time in meetings and discussions. But this should be inner work, not chatter. Nothing can be achieved through talking alone.

During a descent, all these laws and rules do not concern me at all; I do not even want to think about them. What keeps me going? The group. It should support me and obligate me even if I do not want to implement these laws on the level I am on.

When in spirituality, I want to support the group in spirituality as well, but if I am only on the animate level, I am obligated to support the group on that level. The animate level should neither descend nor ascend; on that level, I should always support the group as much as possible.

An Obstacle Is a Very Valuable Thing

Question: Must we go through many obstacles on the way to spirituality?

Answer: On the way to spirituality, we do not pass through obstacles, but through signs that we must connect within ourselves in the correct form. These are pieces of my Kli. They seem opposite to me, but if I do not include them in myself in the correct form, opposite to me, then I simply will not be able to continue my spiritual development.

Let us say that I want to reach the Machsom, and on the way I must fill a basket with berries and mushrooms. When I am on the way, I am given all these “berries and mushrooms,” but only in inverted form.

In fact these are not obstacles; they only appear that way to my will to receive. But if I am missing even one of them, I will not be able to reach the destination.

This is called “a defect in the soul” (an incomplete soul). This is an extremely special thing. In spirituality, this is also called an embryo whose development has stopped: a miscarriage, a still birth, etc.

There are various cases, just as in this world. This happens if even one obstacle is missing. Therefore an obstacle is a very valuable thing.

In Spirituality, It Is Impossible to “Drill a Hole in the Boat”

Question: Is there the concept of “drilling a hole in the boat” in spirituality?

Answer: The concept of “drilling a hole in the bottom of the boat” applies if we are talking about people who are not connected with the spiritual concept of the group.

In spirituality, it is impossible to drill a hole. You can only drill it in the corporeal world.

Let us say a person in the group suddenly wants to become a leader, to become greater than the others. But in the group everyone must be friends, whereas he specifically wants to rule. This is a very vivid example. In the spiritual world, this will not be tolerated.

The Angel That Stands Guard over the Spiritual World

Question: How can one fight despair and exhaustion?

Answer: The fact is that fatigue or despair do not really exist as independent phenomena. In our world it seems to us that there are certain natural occurrences, but these are angels (Malachim). Whatever you perceive as the presence of the Creator—any force, desire, or thought—is an angel.

What is an angel? It is a particular force that is directed at you from above, whether it reveals itself or not. When this force reveals itself, you can neutralize it as though it had never appeared.

Therefore, there is no natural phenomenon—exhaustion, despair, and the like—that we are unable to overcome. There are always actions that stand opposite these phenomena, but you yourself are incapable of carrying them out because you lack the Kelim. So work on your Kelim, and then you will be able to do so.

We see that despair, fatigue, loss of zest for life, confusion, and disorientation are constant obstacles for us. Even though we listen, it is as though we hear nothing. You could write “the importance of the group” a thousand times on the wall, and you simply will fail to see those words. The eyes see, but inwardly nothing penetrates.

This is precisely what an angel is. Look how it acts upon us! It does not allow you to perceive and make use of what is most important. This alone holds you back and prevents you from immediately entering the spiritual world. The angel blocks your way, and you can do nothing about it.

Why? Because you cannot enter the spiritual world simply by striking the angel and removing it by force. You can remove it from the path only on the condition that you unite with others. By this you acquire a Kli. Without this Kli, it will not let you enter. It simply stands in your way, and waits for you to build the Kli.

So how does it push you toward this? Through despair, forgetfulness, confusion, weakness, self-criticism, and so on. It shows you what you must struggle against. Of course, you should not fight despair itself, but you can rid yourself of it only through the group. The angel gives you a sign that only by working on something outside yourself do you break through all the disturbances. Then you pass through, and the path is open.

You have no other choice. The angel will stand in your way for another thousand years. The Creator does not compromise in such matters, not because He is stubborn, but because you do not yet have the Kli. If you do not move the angel and its disturbance aside, it means you are still unable to sense the upper world because you have not yet acquired the proper Kli.

The angel gives you the inverse form of the Kli that you must acquire—instead of despair, inspiration; instead of self-criticism, confidence and elevated self-worth. It gives you opposite signs, and if you improve and correct them, the angel disappears. It steps aside, and you enter. And so it will stand at the entrance to spirituality until you acquire the Kli.

Time plays no role here; in spirituality there is no time. For us this may take millions of years, while in spirituality not even a second passes. For throughout millions of earthly years you have not moved from your place relative to spirituality. That means you remained exactly where you were, and you have not advanced even one iota toward the spiritual. It is astonishing!

I remember that once I waited for a dental appointment because I had something urgent. I had no choice, and I sat there for four hours with a toothache. Then after four hours had passed, the doctor came out and calmly said: “Come in,” as though only a few minutes had gone by. I was amazed; a person does not notice time. It was very striking to me. You can sit groaning in pain for hours, and then hear: “Well, come in.” Until you acquire the Kli, you cannot understand this. After all, how is it possible to exist in spirituality without a Kli?

Each Person Has a Unique Path

Question: In our group, there are friends who love working in the kitchen, others enjoy writing, and still others find themselves in organizational work. Is this an indication of some quality of the Creator revealed in a person, an indication of necessity? After all, this is where a person finds fuel for the work.

Answer: Does a person’s external work, in which he expresses himself in relation to the group or to his spiritual path, whether through kitchen work, uniting the friends, or writing, indicate something?

Of course. It points to the type of his soul. But it does not indicate how elevated that soul is. Is a person who likes to write closer to spirituality than one who prefers working in the kitchen?

For example, Baal Shem Tov was the greatest Kabbalist in Europe after the time of Isaac Luria. Between the ARI and Baal HaSulam, there was no greater Kabbalist than the Baal Shem Tov. Yet he did not write a single word. He went out among the people, explained, gathered Kabbalistic groups, and taught.

He had absolutely no inclination toward writing. Everything we have from him was heard and written down by his students. After the Baal Shem Tov, an entire body of Kabbalistic literature remained and was used by great Admorim (leaders of communities and yeshivot), who themselves were major Kabbalists. All of this literature was recorded from his words, although he himself wrote nothing. We have had many examples like this.

Question: But why does a person feel the need to bestow to the group in such a specific way, through writing, kitchen work, organizing, and so on?

Answer: I cannot say. It depends on the inner structure of the soul. For example, astrologers divide people according to zodiac signs into roughly sixteen character types. This is also mentioned in The Book of Zohar, but it does not give us a clear and precise table according to which soul types can be classified.

Of course, one can say that there are a certain number of soul types, because there are 248 “organs” and 365 “tendons,” divisions of the Partzuf into Rosh, Toch, Sof, divisions into three lines. There are countless variations, but there is no simple chart. And when there is no simple scheme, it means there is no final and serious understanding. Therefore I would not want to explain things according to how they seem to me. It may appear one way now, and later turn out differently or with major changes. Who knows?

But it is absolutely certain that each person receives their own individual life path and obstacles. All this is the result of the revelation of his Reshimot. The upper light influences everyone equally, but the fact that each reacts differently and feels differently happens according to the Reshimot revealed in order to be realized. Ultimately, these Reshimot reflect the development of each person’s soul.

However, the development of the soul itself does not precisely indicate its character. For example, Albert Einstein did not display remarkable abilities until the age of twenty, and he performed poorly in school. Then suddenly he became a genius, and everyone was astonished. It is the same in spirituality. The development of the soul in its “infancy” does not testify to its overall structure or level. For this reason, I refrain from making conclusions or constructing theories.

What the Kabbalists wrote in The Zohar about soul types is too complex and intricate. I hope that one day we will be able to create a kind of table: 600,000 souls divided into several billion parts and thousands of reincarnations. This table would summarize all the data in such a way that we would receive one Kli (one common soul).

Why does each person have a unique path? I do not even know how to place all this into a single field of vision. But it is possible because in the state of final correction (Gmar Tikkun) each person attains this internally, and then sees, feels, and reaches the end of his path.

When we reach the state of Gmar Tikkun, then we will see whether it is possible to “bring down” all these things into our corporeal world (to explain them in the language of branches), and publish them in a book called Kabbalah for Beginners.

Between Two States

A person always exists between two states: the previous one and the future one. The future state pulls one toward itself, while the previous state pushes the person forward, away from suffering.

In other words, there are two levels: the higher one that I have not yet attained that draws me toward itself by showing me that I will find fulfillment once I reach it, and the previous one that pushes me forward through suffering, so I discover that in my current state there is nothing good whatsoever and everything is darkness. This is how a person advances.

Our choice is to move faster and more efficiently by sensing the darkness of the lower stage and the light of the higher one, and in this way we can shorten the time required to transition from one stage to another.

How does a person perceive these two stages within themself? They are felt in him not only as a stage that pulls from the front and pushes from behind, but also as the left line and the right line, two opposing forces where the left is the human nature and the right is the embryo of the qualities of the higher stage within a person: the incorporation of the qualities of the Creator.

From the lowest to the highest state, we ascend the rungs of a ladder that each consists of a lower and higher part, the left and the right. A person passing these rungs is like an empty vessel, and the specific rung upon which one stands gives one fulfillment (light).

Therefore, the soul of a person who is on a certain stage is referred to by the name of that stage. And in this way, a person changes names, changes destiny, and changes their place.

From Unification to the Creator

Question: How does one gather all their aspirations toward the Creator?

Answer: A person cannot gather all their aspirations toward the Creator alone. If we have a certain reservoir of constantly replenished efforts and we make sure that it is constantly preserved and grows, then we can do this.

Take an ordinary prayer book and you will see that it is arranged as though one among many is addressing the Creator. Everywhere it says “we,” “we,” “we”… This is how the Kabbalists, members of the Sanhedrin (Great Assembly) composed it for us before the exile. It sets forth the correct attitude, in the correct form, and according to these stages, an appeal to the Creator.

Thus, all of this is the work of a person from the collective toward the Creator. Otherwise it is impossible. There are certain very specific prayers in which a person addresses the Creator alone. But even in this case, he addresses Him as a representative of society as, what is called, a messenger of the society. It cannot be so that he makes an address entirely on his own.

There is no other nation so unified by its animalistic nature as the Jews. Any other nation can live separately, one part here, another part there. But this nation, by its very nature, even when scattered throughout the world, preserves the ties between its parts.

The same applies to the matter of their own country and of unification. There are many nations whose countries barely manage to sustain their existence, nations who do not feel connection to all the institutions of the state. But for us, this is ingrained in our nature.

We simply cannot do without it: without organization, without unity, without being bound together into a certain mechanism, truly as a nation. And all this is because, at the very core, lies a spiritual nature.

Excess or Necessity?

A person generally determines what is a necessity and what is excess for himself. It is between these two discernments (Avchanot) that we live our lives. The problem is that the conditions given to us are perceived either as a necessity or as an excess, and accordingly we carry out our subsequent actions.

Suppose that I feel fine right now, nothing is pressuring me, and I continue existing this way since I am satisfied with the current state of affairs. But if I now hear that this is a bad state that brings me harm, that I am in danger, about to lose my soul, and to lose the meaning of life, then I will begin to relate to this calm state as a call to action.

That is, I change the definition of my attitude toward the given situation from “excess” to “necessity,” and act accordingly.

Thus, a person’s free choice always stands before the dilemma of how to perceive the present state. One may leave everything as it is, run away, or close one’s eyes, and for this same purpose the Klipot (impure forces), our body, external conditions, and an improper environment act as well, confuse me, and produce a feeling of weariness. All of this is depicted to me as conditions sent from above, and I may relate to them as excess, meaning as a state that satisfies my desire.

Therefore, here I must exert effort, and explain to myself that this is a special state: I am in danger. Then I will begin to perceive my life in such a way that it obligates me toward necessary actions. All of this undoubtedly depends on the books, their authors, and the group, and to what extent my friends burn with the desire for spirituality, and to what extent I am capable of absorbing their aspiration toward the Creator, and am capable of receiving an impression from them. This will compel me to change my inner sensation.

The Sign of Advancement

When a person exerts effort, and feels that he receives no response, it is precisely this feeling that there is no reaction from above to his actions that is a sign of advancement.

If he were to feel that everything is going well, that he is advancing, this is a bad sign that indicates that he is not exerting any effort. For true, correct effort toward the goal consists in the fact that he does not know, yet he “presses the correct button,” meaning that he receives no reward in the form of honor, power, wealth, or any other temptations in the form of gifts or payment from this material world.

If he truly invests effort toward the goal, and not for the sake of the pleasures of this world, then he develops the feeling that there is no response from above to his actions. And this is the most correct sign that he is being guided precisely toward the goal without the slightest deviation, that exact definitions are being awakened of what spiritual is and what goal he must be thinking about. The correct response to efforts is helplessness, despair, and loss of orientation.

When do we feel helplessness and disorientation within our desire to receive? It is when a person enters a more advanced state, when he does not receive fulfillment. This is a sign that he has advanced a little closer to the goal, toward spirituality.

If he feels worse within the desire to receive from one state to another, this means that he has advanced in the direction of spirituality, that dissatisfaction within the desire to receive is growing.

In the Days of the Small State

Concerning the Omer count [a count of seven weeks beginning the second night of Passover and ending in the holiday of Shavuot], it is known that man’s primary work is to connect himself to the Creator (Rabash, Letter 59).

The Omer signifies that a person is in a state of correction after the exodus from Egypt on the levels of the small state (Katnut). Therefore during the period of the counting of the Omer rejoicing is forbidden because joy is the drawing of the light of Hochma.

Shaving is also forbidden because “hair” (Searot) is likewise connected with the drawing of lights. “Hair” is an external Partzuf upon the body (Guf) of a person for attracting additional light.

Therefore, during the days of the small state, we live with little, and this is called the counting of the Omer. Through lowering himself and working in modesty, a person comes to the counting of the Omer. “Counting” means that light already begins to shine upon him; he draws lights through subjugating himself across all seven of his qualities, each of which also consists of seven parts that make a total of 49 qualities.

Through this, a person reaches the holiday of Shavuot, that is, a state in which the Kli (vessel) becomes corrected and worthy of drawing the Torah.

Then, from the animate level, from animate food, from the Omer (“sheaf”), from Seorim (“barley”), one comes to the level of Man (Adam), to the degree of MA.

All of this comes through working on the recognition of the greatness of the Creator, through efforts to increase His greatness in one’s eyes throughout all 49 qualities or states. Through this a person grows because by increasing the greatness of the Creator each time, he draws light from above, and thus corrects his qualities to complete perfection and arrives at the holiday of Shavuot.
