I know we’re still technically in the middle of winter.  Spring hasn’t even arrived yet.  But, as anyone who lives in Lake Havasu City knows, it’s never too early to start planning for summer.  Currently, the City of Lake Havasu is searching for boys and girls ages 14 to 17 who are interested in signing up for the Lake Havasu Summer Youth Volunteer Program 2014.

The Lake Havasu City Recreation Division needs teenage volunteers to help with their summer recreational programs.  All participants will receive valuable hands-on experience working with younger kids as well as the opportunity to work on and improve their customer service, communication, teamwork and care-giving skills.  Volunteer work helps teenagers learn the value of being an involved part of the Lake Havasu community.  As an added bonus, it always looks great on college and job applications.

All positions on the Lake Havasu Summer Youth Volunteer Program 2014 are unpaid.  Anyone interested in vying for one of these positions can pick up an application either at Thunderbolt Middle School, Lake Havasu High School or the Lake Havasu Aquatic Center.  They must be completed and handed back in by the end of business on March 7, 2014.  After careful consideration of the applications, prospective volunteers will be called in to be interviewed (by appointment only) at the Aquatic Center from 2pm to 6pm on April 10th.

Chances are that cancer has affected every one of us in Lake Havasu City at some point in our lives.  Whether it is our cousin, brother, son, mother or a beloved friend, statistics show that we each have personally know someone who has battled this dreaded disease in one way or another.  The Cancer Association of Havasu through the Havasu Community Health Foundation is holding its Lake Havasu Cancer Ball 2014 this Saturday, February 1st to raise money for the programs and services they provide to members of the Havasu community.

The Lake Havasu Cancer Ball 2014 is hosting a Venetian Masquerade themed party with a no-host cocktail bar at 6pm (must be 21 or older and be able to present a photo ID) and dinner starting promptly at 7pm.  All guests are encouraged to dress in black tie apparel with beautiful masquerade masks.  This is merely a request to make things festive in keeping with the evening’s theme.  However, it is strictly optional, not required.  In addition to the cocktails and fine dining, guests can dance the night away to some wonderful live music.

The evening’s events will culminate in the announcement of the Cancer Association’s Hero of the Year.  Part of this honor includes having a scholarship for Mohave Community College’s second year nursing students named for them.  All proceeds from the Lake Havasu Cancer Ball 2014 will benefit the Cancer Association of Havasu, who provides education to the community about cancer-related issues as well as ongoing support to those Havasu residents who have been stricken by this disease.  To get your tickets, please contact Jeanie Morgan at (928) 453-8190 as soon as possible.  This event sells out every year, so make sure to get your tickets today.

Why should landlubbers have all the fun at Christmas time?  The 2013 Lake Havasu Boat Parade of Lights brings the magic of thousands of twinkling lights right onto the water.  If you missed the boat parade last weekend, you’re in luck.  It has been extended this year to include this Saturday, December 14th.  Yay!

The 2013 Lake Havasu Boat Parade of Lights is a favorite of Havasu locals.  More than 50 boats are decked out in sparkly gear as they traverse the channel from Thompson Bay to Windsor Beach and back.  If you’ve never been to one of our boat parades, you NEED to add this to your holiday agenda!  All Havasu residents and visitors are welcome to visit the docks outside of the London Bridge Resort to see the participating boats up close and personal anytime between now and the evening of the 14th.  Beginning at dusk, all boats will be lit up for your viewing pleasure.

If we can have a London Bridge that connects “mainland” Lake Havasu City with the island, then it seems conceivable that the water below it that stretches from the English Village to the island could be nicknamed the “English Channel”.  While the list of people to swim across the European English Channel is definitely a short one, you don’t have to be a seasoned athlete or risk life and limb for the Lake Havasu swim across the English Channel 2013.  In fact, all you have to do is show up, sign up and suit up.

Havasu residents of all ages and athletic abilities are welcome to participate in the Lake Havasu swim across the English Channel 2013.  In this case, the English Channel is actually the Bridgewater Channel that flows beneath the London Bridge.  All participants are required to register at the Shugrues docks at 5pm on Friday evening.  Contestants will start their swim promptly at 6pm over to the London Bridge Resort.  The fastest swimmers will get the honor of flipping the switch to officially start the Festival of Lights in the English Village.

Do you like to swim?  Want to be able to say that you swam the English Channel?  Put down the turkey and sign up for the Lake Havasu Swim Across the English Channel 2013.  If you are unable to swim the distance yourself, come to the bridge and cheer on your favorite competitors to the other side.  Happy holidays!

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is just 2 1/2 weeks away?  I swear I just gave away the last of my candy to the little goblins and ghouls that showed up on my doorstep Halloween night!  If the calendar is saying Thanksgiving is near, then that means that the Lake Havasu Turkey Trot 2013 is about to commence.

The Lake Havasu Turkey Trot 2013 puts the “fun” in fundraiser.  With your $30 entry fee, you will receive a T shirt, raffle ticket and position in the 5K trot/walk.  All participants will be divided up into categories based on their age, with the top male and female in each category receiving a turkey for their Thanksgiving dinner table.  But, you don’t have to come in first to win something.  There will be other prizes raffled off as well.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday celebrated in Lake Havasu City during the month of October.  We also pay homage to the most recognizable of our city’s landmarks, the London Bridge, during London Bridge Days.  After all, the bridge was the main selling point Robert McCulloch used back in the 1960s to draw investors to our desert community and helped make Lake Havasu the destination of choice in the Southwest.  During London Bridge Days, Halloween and history will collide with the Lake Havasu Pumpkin Festival.

The Lake Havasu Pumpkin Festival will take place on the dirt lot next to the Aquatic Center.  Once inside, visitors will enjoy carnival-like activities, such as fishing for a prize, getting your face painted, listening to not-so-scary stories and much more.  Hay rides are open for all ages and the kids can expel some major energy in the inflatable bounce houses.  On Sunday, bring the kids dressed in their favorite Halloween costumes so they can compete for fun prizes in the Lake Havasu Pumpkin Festival’s costume contest.
