While weather forecasts are never a sure thing, be prepared for rainy day activities this week!

While we're hoping current forecasts are incorrect, we thought we'd give you some ideas for events that will be mostly weatherproof around the region. If the sun comes out, all the better, as there are lots more outside events as well!

Turkeys and trout don't mix

Combining turkey hunting and trout fishing is a May ritual for many hunting anglers, or angling hunters ready to seize every opportunity offered by the month when gobblers are strutting and trout are rising.

It had been kind of a strange spring gobbler season for Paula, coming on the heels of the previous spring when she killed two birds in three days of hunting, including a double-bearded slammer that now sits in our living room, the only gobbler we've ever taken to a taxidermist.

This particular season, however, she hadn't hunted much. Her schedule dictated that she'd be out of town on two of the first three weekends of May, and her "other" job resigned her to a couple of quick off-the-roost efforts before heading up the road to work.

Balanced Rocks

The Balanced Boulders is a classic Adirondack Mountain hike for all makes and models of outdoor enthusiasts. It is also one of those hikes that I like to guide for those who only want a half day outing, but want some serious bang for their buck, no pun intended. Seriously, if you have not visited the Balanced Rocks you are truly missing out on the jewel of Sentinel Range. Yes, it's part of the daunting Sentinel Range, just like Stewart and Kilburn and about a half dozen other trailless peaks, but, what's nice about this, there's a perfectly good trail right up to them.

Buck Island Round-About

Paddling on lake Placid is never dull or the same twice. The lake is big enough where it can be considered big water and even a bit dangerous under the right conditions. Of course, that doesn't even take into consideration the motorboats on the lake and for that reason I tend to find myself on Lake Placid at some point in the spring, usually around this time. Come to find out, after I got home and started to download the pictures, it was 1-year ago that day, that I proposed to my fiancé Corenne Black and surprising enough she said yes.

Spring Migration Timing

All across the region, birders are discussing how slow the beginning of this year's migration seems to be. I birded at Intervale Lowlands in Lake Placid earlier this week and found things to be fairly slow in terms of migrants there - as has been case in the other locations I've been. Yellow-rumped warblers have been around for weeks now, and they were in good numbers. We also found quite a few Nashville warblers and a variety of other resident birds and early migrants. Highlights also included nesting American kestrels and hooded mergansers as well as a broad-winged hawk.

Whiteface Region Mountain Bike Trails Ready To Ride

The sunny dry weather we've had over the past weeks has certainly accelerated the drying process for our local mountain bike trails. With every passing sunny day the surface becomes drier and more terrain is suitable for cycling traffic. Currently, just about all of the trails in the region are ready to ride. However, riders should remain cautious, as wet spots may still be looming in low-lying or shaded areas.
