Lake Placid Blog

Everyone has a picture in their head of that delightful "cabin in the woods." This is a wonderful choice for a classic Adirondack experience, whether you are thinking of a couple's getaway that is all about the skiing and snuggling, or seeking a family adventure, with snowshoeing and s'mores around a firepit. Considering a cabin also contains more options than you might think. Just as everyone has their own favorite candy choice when presented with a chocolate sampler, our range of possible cabins offers a lot of variety. Here are a few to consider. Your own forest Head to Van Hoevenberg... continue reading

It's possible... that you are not a fan of this particular holiday. Perhaps it's that struggle through the mall crowds. Maybe you once got sick on Grandma's ribbon candy. Or it was those nightmares after watching "Bad Santa" way too late one night. Whatever the reason, Lake Placid understands. That is why there's the Holiday Village Stroll. This weekend event has all the great stuff holiday fans love, then puts a different spin on it to make the Grinches feel a little more tolerant. Authentic atmosphere People who dislike the fakery of snow from a can and recorded "ho-ho-hos" on a loop... continue reading

Mall Schmall I grew up loving the mall. I remember all of my shopping took place there, in the world of suburban chain stores. The food court and the big glitzy stores, indoors. I could spend an entire day at a mall. I moved to the Adirondacks in my twenties and I didn't know what I would do without the fancy shopping malls. I was a retail junkie, a commercial, cookie-cutter-shopper junkie. I have changed. I have now experienced the quaint, privately owned shops. I have made an effort each year to do the majority of my holiday shopping on the streets of Lake Placid. The thoughtful gifts I... continue reading

“Great moments are born from great opportunities.” - Herb Brooks, 1980 USA Olympic Hockey Head Coach I grew up miles away from Lake Placid, in the middle of the woods, down a long dirt road, in a log cabin basically in the middle of nowhere. It all began when my dad gave me a pair of figure skates. These weren’t just figure skates; no, these were better! My dad ground the toe pick down all the way and referred to them from there on out as hockey skates. Next, he cut down a tree branch and carved it into what resembled a hockey stick, then he pushed me off, onto the ice of our little pond... continue reading

There it was. An opening in my work schedule. The weather said snow for the two days prior. The kids are in school and my wife would be at work. That means it’s time to head to Whiteface! So the texts go out to the usual suspects, but when the replies come back it’s all: “Gotta work” and “Can’t make it.” I realize that something amazing is about to happen. A day at Whiteface all by myself. Now, “all by myself” is a relative term because Whiteface is a popular ski destination with a wide range of people. So there are technically other people at the mountain. And while I generally like... continue reading

1. Lake Placid is America’s First Winter Resort. Most folks remember Lake Placid hosted the 1980 Olympic Winter Games. Some know we hosted the 1932 Winter Olympic Games. But, Lake Placid's winter sports history began with Melvil Dewey, who kept his grand resort, the Lake Placid Club, open through the winter season of 1904-05. Thus began Lake Placid's heritage as America's First Winter Resort. Sure, most of Lake Placid’s visitors come here during the warm months, but today the area continues to beckon travelers to play in the snow — primarily due to the increased interest... continue reading

Embedded thumbnail for Triple Axel This
Can you do a triple axel? That’s my favorite question I get as a figure skater. No, I cannot do a triple axel, but yes, I can tell you about the 2017 Bridgestone Skate America, which will take place in Lake Placid on November 24-26. I know you don’t understand how we can spin that fast and not get dizzy, or how we do two rotations in the air and land on one blade on the ice. To be honest, sometimes I don't even understand it, but that's what makes the sport so exciting. A trip to Lake Placid is worth it on its own, but Skate America will be the icing on the cake.  ... continue reading
