...The land use plan is like a road map; it gives guidance and assistance to property owners so they understand the community's expectations about what kind of businesses and residences are to be constructed around the railroad station.... The Civic will be working very closely with Brookhaven Town Supervisor, Mark Lesko, the Town Planning Dept., the Long Island Rail Road, and the Town of Islip to move this project further down the road.... So if you live or work near the railroad station and want to be involved in planning for the future, let the Civic President know by sending him an email at: president@lakeronkonkomacivic.org

(By the way, you can read a copy of the RONKONKOMA HUB TRANSIT-ORIENTED PLANNING STUDY online by going to: http://www.brookhaven.org/PlanningEnvironmentLandManagement/ PlanningEnvironmentLandManagement/tabid/193/Default.aspx Scroll about half-way down the page and you will see a link to the study below the paragraph that starts with, "The Town of Brookhaven has embarked upon a planning study...")

...This community-based project took the aspirations from the Portion Road Visioning and worked them into a codified plan that will provide guidance and assistance to commercial property owners so they understand the community's expectations and visions for the Portion Road corridor.... The short and long term benefits of this land use plan are really too extensive to list here, but there will be ample opportunity for Lake Ronkonkoma residents and business owners to learn more and offer their input.

...You Can't Plan Your Journey While Doing 60 Some may wonder as to why we are so concentrated on planning given the current economic climate, but planning for the future is best done when development projects are in the slow lane. On a long-distance trip, when your car starts to run low on fuel, you don't pull over and hope that someone will come along with a can of free gasoline; you plan a sustainable route to get you to the next gas station, and then the next gas station, and then ultimately to your destination.... We may be low on economic fuel right now, but we have our route planned to the next gas station, and when the tank is full we will know exactly where to go to keep the tank full, and reach our goal: revitalized, walkable, and sustainable downtown business centers that we can all be proud of.

The New Arrowhead Community Park

In the fall of 2005, the Civic was successful in persuading the Town of Brookhaven to purchase the triangular-shaped property, bounded by Pond Road and Church Street (see map below), using Open Space funds. Since that time, the Civic has worked with the Town to make improvements to the park, such as new curbs, pedestrian crossings, an enclosing fence, and interior pathways. With all the preparation work now complete, the park is ready to be planted with flowers, shrubs, and trees to become a beautifully landscaped gateway to Lake Ronkonkoma. Using the triangular shape of the park as an opportunity to celebrate the Native American history of Lake Ronkonkoma, the park has been named the Arrowhead Community Park.... So, on Saturday, May 16, community members gathered at the new Arrowhead Community Park to participate in the Great Brookhaven Plant-In. As you can see in the photos below, residents just like you have made a significant impact in their community with the simple act of donating some of their time to improve a once-abandoned parcel of land. But there’s plenty of space in the park and plenty of opportunity to show how much you care.

...Besides landscaping, the Civic would like to see other improvements to Arrowhead Community Park, such as benches, a community bulletin board, and a memorial plaza with a flagpole.... To raise additional funds, the Civic has started a Buy-A-Brick program for the memorial plaza that will surround the flagpole.... One of the parcels is now the site of the new Commerce/TD Bank on Portion Road.... This is a four and a half acre parcel, just north of Friendly's Restaurant.

The Open Space Committee voted that both of these parcels merited purchase by the town. Unfortunately, the owner of the Commerce/TD Bank property would not sell to the town. The owners of the Link property were not interested at the time in selling to the town either; they proceeded to get approval in 2006 from the Town Planning Board for a 7-lot subdivision on that site. This site was especially desirable as it is across the street from the 10-acre nature preserve owned by the Nature Conservancy, but the owner (a developer) told the town that he would not sell it to the town for any price that they could pay - he preferred to subdivide and develop it.

...Fast forward to 2008: the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization recently learned that the owner of the Link property reconsidered and was interested in selling to the town. We aren't sure if the downturn in the housing market caused this change of events, but regardless, we are thrilled with outcome: at the December 23, 2008 meeting of Brookhaven's Town Board, the board voted to purchase this parcel for $1,275,000 using funds from the Open Space Bond Act. ...When Brookhaven Superintendent of Highways John Rouse took office a few years ago, he realized the extent to which road work was done in the town on a "who you know" basis. Some roads were paved nearly every year, while some roads went decades without any maintenance and repair. Mr. Rouse embarked on a multi-year plan to address the inequities that had developed over many years.

Lake Ronkonkoma, Holbrook and Farmingville in particular, have many, many roads that have been ignored for decades. The Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization has brought to the attention of the Highway Department several of the most deteriorated road surfaces. They are in such bad shape that a simple resurfacing is no longer possible. Instead, the entire roadway has to be removed, new base material has to be laid and then new asphalt applied.

In the end, the final design for the road will increase it's efficiency but without unnecessarily widening the road, but it was difficult to convince DPW and others that widening the road wasn't the answer because it's counterintuitive.

Tom Vanderbilt's new book makes traffic and driving issues easier to comprehend, and with a few good anecdotes along the way. For example, most traffic congestion near accident scenes isn't caused by the actual accident, but by drivers slowing down just to see what they can see. Experiments in erecting roadside screens to shield the accident scene from drivers has proved fruitless because drivers will slow down just to look at the screens.

...The existing retreat house was constructed in 1927 on land that was given to the Cenacle Sisters by Maude Adams. Ms. Adams was a stage actress at the turn of the century, and was considered the most notable actress of her time, introducing Peter Pan to worldwide audiences.... In gratitude for the Sisters’ hospitality, she donated her Long Island farm to the Cenacle Sisters, where they built a retreat house.

...With this reality in mind, the Sisters have decided to tear down the old building and build a new, smaller and greener facility on the footprint of the old building.... This will mean that it will be energy efficient in terms of electric, heating and air conditioning usage, will comply with the latest health and safety codes, and will have less of an environmental impact on the pond, wetlands and woodlands that are on the property, as well as on the Ronkonkoma community as a whole.

...Because the Cenacle is not selling any property, or building on any other area on the property, they will be preserving the open space that includes the pond, wetlands, woodlands and walking trails.... For those who know the beauty and contemplative nature of the old building, many items will be reused in the new facility such as statuary, chapel items, furniture and paintings.

During the building phase, the Prayer Enrollment office will be open and operating out of the building at 312 Cenacle Road, and day and evening programs will be held at the Maude Adams house.

The Cenacle Sisters want all to know that they will continue to provide retreats in a peaceful, contemplative space for those who come to the Cenacle for respite in an increasingly busy world.

Navy SEAL Lt. Murphy’s honor. Mr. Foley and Mr. Mazzei announced the dedication of Serenity Plaza, a new brick and black granite memorial at the Town’s Lake Ronkonkoma “Navy (SEAL) Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Park” dedicated to Lt. Murphy and the men of 28 June 2005 Operation RedWing.

In making the announcement about a ship being named in Lt. Murphy’s memory, Secretary Winter explained the new guided-missile destroyer will be one of the Navy’s most advanced, state-of-the art warships in the fleet. With only 62 ships in the Burke class, Lt. Murphy joins a small group of honorees who have had ships in this class named after them, including: John Paul Jones, Winston Churchill, Admiral Admiral David Farragut, and Franklin Roosevelt.

Lake Ronkonkoma's “Navy (SEAL) Lt. Michael Murphy Memorial Park” is now the proud home of both Lt. Murphy's Purple Heart monument and Serenity Plaza.... Murphy, from Patchogue, was killed by enemy forces during a reconnaissance mission, Operation Redwing, on June 28, 2005. Lt. Murphy lead a four-man team tasked with finding a key Taliban leader in the mountainous terrain near Asadabad, Afghanistan, when they came under fire from a much larger enemy force. Lt. Murphy knowingly left his position of cover to get a clear signal in order to communicate with his headquarters.

They often include quality retail stores and restaurants, good pedestrian access and facilities, commu¬nity-based housing units and in general, a place where people want to spend time; not just a location that you drive to, park your car, take a train, come home, get in your car and leave.

...A spokesman for the LIRR noted that they are studying a long-range plan to extend electrification for the railroad to Yaphank, since many of the current commuters drive long distances from points east to use the frequently scheduled and direct trains from Ronkonkoma.

Despite the positive reaction to the project in general, some of the local residents who attended were concerned about losing their property if the government decided to take it under eminent domain. The Town Supervisor, Planning Commissioner, the Town’s consultant, and the Civic President made it clear to those present that the use of eminent domain for widespread taking of property was not a goal or a recommendation of the study.... The residents were assured that the intent was to redevelop the existing retail areas, and if necessary, utilize some of the parking lots for future development.

...It was explained that this project would not be completed in the short term, but was instead the creation of a long-term vision for the area that would be used to insure that the area is developed appropriately in the future.

...The initiation of the Ronkonkoma Hub Planning and Land Use Study began about six months ago when our Civic was asked to comment on a developer’s plan to build yet another parking lot on a wooded lot next to the existing parking garage.... They have promised that the initial blueprint plan for the area will be developed quickly, but they have also stressed that it will be a very flexible plan that will continue to be open for community input and tweaking.
