How many times have you raced upwind on a port tack and finding yourself converging with a boat on a opposite starboard tack? If so you will soon have to make some decisions. Do you have room to cross or will you have to duck astern? Should you cover the other boat?

I can promise you that we have no control over the weather so let’s take advantage of the good days and then maybe the real rotten days won’t seem so bad.

We will be following our race schedule every weekend and I will try and get an email out every week announcing the boat we will be sailing on Saturday.

...The good weather on April 3rd brought down some potential club members that hope to sail Solings with us in the future.... By that I mean sailing at the same location, every Saturday and making our selves available to talk to people about our hobby (sailing, building, hi-tech boats, vintage boats, etc.). That’s the way the LakeSide club has grown and will continue to grow.

Our sailing season is underway now and we hope to see more boats on the water as the weather improves.

LSMSC in Sachem Patch News

Sailing on Lake Ronkonkoma By Michele Antonio

April 3 marked the start of sailing season for the Lakeside Model Sailing Club on Lake Ronkonkoma. The club will meet every Saturday until the fall to sail and race their remote controlled model yachts. Tonight we move the clocks ahead, and next weekend Spring arrives along with the Bill Leidel Invitational at the Heckscher MYC.

...With the start of our season just around the corner, now is the time to make sure that your servos and radios work. There is nothing worse than arriving at the Lake, expecting to have a good time sailing, only to find that you have a problem with the electronics, sheets, or sails. It may still be early in the season, but a rainy, miserable day, like today, is great time to spend in the workshop making last minute adjustments.

Next weekend, several of our members will be at the Bill Leidel Regatta so there will be no sailing at Lake Ronkonkoma.... April 3rd will be the official start of the 2010 season and we hope that most skippers will be able to make it.

Heckscher MYC Bill Leidel Invitational Regatta

Heckscher MYC presents the Bill Leidel Invitational Regatta at Heckscher Park Pond, Huntington, NY, on March 20, 2010, for Marblehead Class (50/800) model yachts.

Traditional Vintage Marblehead For Sale

Traditional Vintage Marblehead constructed using plank on frame building technique; excellent condition; launched October, 2008.... Proper sail feet are configured to improve performance over the range of wind and wave conditions that you encounter on the racecourse. The mainsail foot is especially important in maintaining boat balance and power through the variability of wind that is encountered during a day of sailing competition.

...On Saturday, February 13th, we had a club meeting at the north side of Lake Ronkonkoma (our old sailing spot). We had heard rumors that the water level was dropping and this was a good time to see for ourselves. While the water level is down from last year, it’s doubtful that the level will be low enough for us to bring our cars down to the water like we use to.

...It will feel good to feel some warmth in the air with the breeze on our backs and our yachts competing on the water.... We were lucky that our sailing area was on the south side of the Lake and most weekends we had very good sailing conditions, calm seas and moderate winds.

During 2009 we saw a decrease in the number of skipper's sailing at our lake.... I also chose to cancel our awards luncheon since we always struggle to get 20 members and guests.

...At this time every year I send out a notice for the following year's dues.

...Members who joined the club this year, Ronald Lange, Mike Young, and Fred Erdhardt are considered paid members for 2010 and dues are not required. Tom and I agree that George Schramm (our web site guru), DiDi Rulon and Jay Marshall are honorary members of our club and no dues are required from these individuals.
