...Our next club meeting will be the 2nd Wednesday of March (March 11) at the Whiteheads’ at 8:00 pm.... This is only fair because no one wants to be fouled by a non-racing boat. At many of the buoys non-racing boats were trying to get around with the boats racing, this should not be.

...This is one reason that we are trying to make the course longer, it gives more boats a chance to catch the boat in front of them or lose their position to another boat. We may not get in a lot of races, but the competition at all levels is enhanced by giving everyone a chance to catch someone.

If people don’t agree with what I’ve said above, please e-mail your response to me or see me at the pond.

Shortly after I arrived the fog started to lift so you could see the other side of the Lake. The winds remained calm all morning ranging in strength from 0 - 10 mph.

Four skippers prepared their boats and arrived at the starting line at 10:00 am for the first race. One skipper had electrical problems periodically and would lose control of his boat. One of these times he sailed across the finish line with no control of the rudder or sails.

...Spring is in the air and the sailing so far has been very windy or relatively calm.

Commodore/Memorial Cup: May 3, 2008

The LakeSide MSC will be hosting the annual Commodore's/ Memorial Cup Invitational at Lake Ronkonkoma on May 3rd. What we got was clearing skies and winds that continued to increase as the day progressed (18-20 mph).

Six skippers arrived at Lake Ronkonkoma, two had difficulties and dropped out. Four skippers started the racing season and as the day progressed and the seas got worse and only two skippers were in the last race. By that time white caps were on the lake and rollers were coming towards shore. All in all it was a fun day, so long as I didn't have to be on the boat! ...While we don’t usually have a race director assigned for each weekend we try to follow the rules as best we can. Early starts are not allowed and are corrected by going around one of the buoys and restarting; no dip starts are allowed. Touching a buoy (windward or leeward) is not allowed; this is corrected by doing a 360-degree turn.... We try to cover some of the rules at our meeting on the second Wednesday of the month.

...Also, any projects that you may be working on and would like to share with our club members will be of interested to all.

Attached to this month’s newsletter you will see our club roster, and at this time I would like to welcome Dan and Jane Glyn, and Ray Golden as new members to the LakeSide MSC.

...At our last meeting we modified the race schedule in order to try and promote our members attending the Invitational's hosted by other clubs. Years ago this use to be a great way to meet members of other clubs and see how boats were built and raced by other people associated with this hobby.... It's a great learning experience and it's interesting to sail on different ponds where the winds may be very shifty compared to what you experience in your normal area.... This is a great race to go to and most clubs haven't even started their sailing season yet.

...I believe they have completed 4 days of racing and are trying to complete the series before our racing season begins in April.

Heckscher MYC Bill Leidel Invitational Regatta

Heckscher MYC presents the Bill Leidel Invitational Regatta at Heckscher Park Pond, Huntington, NY, on March 22, 2008, for Marblehead Class (50/800) model yachts.

A little bit of History

Below is an excerpt from “Sydney’s Model Racing Skiffs” by Stephen Crewes (page 15) describing how a couple went to the sailing area for a picnic, and a fun day of sailing:

...She rode her bicycle from her home in Lilyfield to his place, and they would then both ride to where Harry kept his rowing boat. She would take their lunch and afternoon tea on her bicycle, he would carry the model skiff and all the gear on his bicycle.... He took the mast and the spinnakers, rolled on the booms and placed them along the bicycles main bar and tied them on. He placed the model skiff hull in a bag and put it over the left shoulder and 4 sets of sails were rolled up and put in a bag and it went over the right shoulder.... The right hand was used to steer the bicycle, as well as using the brake and for stopping and giving hand signals.”

...I really don’t know how good the good old day’s really were, except that some great boats have disappeared from sight.

...Since these boats sailed before remote control operation existed, the skipper’s would have to chase their racing skiff’s in row boats in the harbor.

Sail Winches For Sale

Sail Winches For Sale 2 Futaba S5801 sail winch servos.
