Minicoy is the southernmost island which is more closer to Maldives than to another Lakshadweep island. The nearest Lakshadweep island to Minicoy is Kalpeni which is around 450 Km away whereas the nearest Maldives island Addu is just 139 Km away from Minicoy. Minicoy covers an area of approximately 4.22 sq km and is the second largest island after Androth. Words cannot do justice to the incredible size of the lagoon, one of the largest in Lakshadweep, the green of coconut trees, and the mirror-like surface of an inland lake as it nestles in one corner of the island.

Minicoy Culture:

Although its official name is Minicoy, the people here like to call it Maliku, meaning the good harbor. Maldives isdivided into nine different villages or athiris which are separately administered by an elected male representativecalled 'mopan'. The villages can be distinguished by their color and the symbol. The culture here is totally different from what is found in other islands of Lakshadweep. It is more similar to the customs and traditions in Maldives island. Mahl is the main language spoken in Minicoy which is common to Maldives. Though there are few people who speak Malayalam as well. Unlike other societies, Minicoy is a matrilineal society which means family descent is traced through female line. Here a man lives either in his mother's house or his wives. Minicoy is renowned for its dance tradition: the lava dance is performed on festive occasions.

The most important attraction on Minicoy island has been same for more than the last 100 years. Built in 1885 by the British, the magnificent lighthouse has become a symbol of pride for Minicoy. It is one of the oldest surviving structures in entire Lakshadweep. Climb till the topmost platform on the lighthouse from where you can get mesmerizing views of the unending sea and the lush green Minicoy islands. The light house is still functional and shows path to all the ships passing by.
For tourists, there is nothing better in Minicoy than shopping. From the moment you enter Minicoy you will know that people of Minicoy love colors. One of the hobbies of the people here is to craft woods and paint them in themost vibrant colors. They prove to be a great memorabilia to take back home. The Tuna canning factory - signifying its importance in tuna fishing and boat building activity, Pedal boating, Kayaking, snorkeling - which is unbelievably refreshing and rewarding in the long and shallow lagoons here and Sailing activities are some of the landmarks and attractions found in Minicoy. Sea walking barefoot is not a viable option as the sea bed is rocky and rugged.

For accommodation, there is a 20 bedded Minicoy Resort that is among the most well organized government resorts in Lakshadweep islands. It is situated on the southern side of the island, close to the lighthouse. Every cottage has an open to sky bathroom with a coral laid floors. The arrangement for food is made on the courtyard at the entrance itself. Although you are served food according to their choices but if wish to taste the Minicoy specialty, then you have to give an advance notice. The Lakshadweep tourism also organizes traditional Minicoy Bandiya and Lava dances.
Minicoy can be visited with Lakshadweep Tourism's Swaying Palms and Coral Reef packages. For commuting inside Minicoy, there are tempos which are the only means of transportation on the island.

Kadamat woo its visitors with its long unending stretches of white sandy beaches and exceptional scuba diving facilities. Although Kadamat is among the inhabited islands in Lakshadweep, it's population is quite low and is only around 5000. The island is 8 Km in length, 550 meters wide at its broadest point and covers an area of around 3.20 sq Km. The warm and clear water lagoons are perfect for swimming and scuba diving whereas the silvery beaches are ideal for spending lazy and carefree hours under the swaying palms. The water around the Kadamat islands are one of the most cleanest in Lakshadweep. It is the only island with lagoons on both eastern and western sides.The shallow lagoons on the western side of the island are dotted with the most beautiful coral reefs in this archipelago. The diving school on the island is one of the best and most famous. The afternoons here are a little sultry and hot, but the nights are quite pleasant with cool breeze from the ocean soothing the environment. If you somehow miss the sunrise, do not forget to witness the sun setting behind the horizon. It lasts a little more than an hour curtaining the sky in a myriad of unbelievable hues. Without a doubt, the shores of Kadamat are one of the most irresistible in entire Asia.
The tourist huts are situated some distance away from habitation, with only the splash of the waves to break the silence. Major Attractions:

The main attraction in Kadamat is definitely the Lacadives Diving School set up by the famous Prahlad Kakkar. It is the first and only CMAS certified or World Underwater Federation diving school in India. Although its headquarters is in Mumbai, the main base is in Kadamat. Lacadives offer several packages for diving holidays here. There are beginner as well as advanced courses offered here during the season which starts in October and stretches till may. No courses are offered during the monsoon season. All the beginners are required to carry with them a doctor's certificate stating that they are fit for diving.
Apart from the warm and clear waters, Scuba Diving is worth it for the awesome spread of coral reefs on the sea bed. The most appealing of them all is the Red Tinged Coral that might just tempt you to pick them. However it is advised that you don't do it as it is against the law to take corals from these islands.
