Well sorry folks for being so inactive for half a year since my last entry in November last year. Things has been changing a lot and now I'm relocated in Melbourne. Melbourne is a great city for living and working with so many different places to go and many kind of people to hook up. I really enjoy it here.

Anyway, enough with my little story of my personal life. Now I'm proudly to announce to you guys about my shoot for Harper's Bazaar Vietnam first issue and I'm still very excited about this. The publishing day was 27th of June and it was just 4 days ago. Well, it's Bazaar and it's big. And I had a chance to work with a great team shooting in Sydney especially with stylist Lorena Perez Lira who already worked in the industry for six years. She has amazing eyes of details in styling and she pulled great outfits for the shoot. We got Alex Perry, Aurelio Costarella .. and they're top designers in Australia and also very internationally.
Model is Dani Seitz who's American, came to Sydney for Fashion Week and was represented by Chadwick Models.
I also need to talk about the location. It was the Royalty Prussia showroom on Williams street, Sydney and it was an AMAZING place. They have so many excess luxury items in store for example there was one dining table which Dani was lying on for 1 look during the shoot, cost around 1 millions dollars, took 5 years to finish manufacturing and it was SOLD. There was a bed which also was in the shoot as well, cost around 1.5 mils. That's so crazy and it's kind of once in a life time opportunities to shoot there with those crazy expensive items.

Lauren Ashley & Chloe Morello

It was a fun day shooting with Lauren & Chloe. We used Elite Models Canberra studio to shoot. There was only grey seamless paper in the studio, no lighting, so I had to use my speedlites most of the time. But it was still good to work with a proper background. Dave Reid, again, did an amazing job to change 5 different looks on 2 girls in 3 hours shooting.

We did different style, just for fun, anything could came up from our minds. We played with natural lighting as well:

Ah, this shoot was in 5th of November, almost 2 months ago but I forgot to put them up. As you can see below, flowers has been used.

Not much to say, just, I mostly focused on the makeup but not too close on the face only.

Photoshoot in Elite Canberra

I had a chance to do a wonderful photoshoot in late October in Elite Canberra casting day. The main event was casting, but they need to do a photoshoot there to demonstrate for all the wannabe models can see how it works in the industry by working with a team to achieve a fantastic look. And one big thing to me, FTV came to film us. I've been very exciting to wait for their footage aired on Channel 10.
The ekip, again, led by Dave Reid, yes, the amazing Dave Reid. He did the art direction for flower headpieces, makeup and hair. We had Adi from Lil Blossom Boutique Florist in Canberra came and sponsor all the flowers to made all the amazing looks happened.
This time we had Hannah Billing, a 14 years old girl who hasn't modeled before, came and modeled for us. She's so gorgeous with innocent pure angelic looking. Check out the behind the scene video for everyone's hard working.

As in the video you can see my lighting setup was kinda simple with just 2 speedlites with softbox on axis against a white wall. Here is it:

Quite simple but very effective.

After this shoot, we did another one with this florist theme as well and that was another fantastic shoot, everything look so fascinating. Here is some sneak peak:

Scarry Liquify

I bet you most of you guys know how powerful Liquify is and how scarry it is as well. I use Liquify a lot to fix my photo, but in just a very slightly way. But sometimes I was overdone with it, because I had to.

As I said before, I don't usually post Before/After photo because it might offend the model. But let's make this as an example for how scarry Liquify is:

The original photo, as you can see, the model as a broad jaw and chin, also she has one bigger eye. No problem. Photoshop can do everything.
How many things different that you can point out?

Ali Bromley was a Canberra model who now move to Sydney and stay there. She's so gorgeous and a very enthusiast model, working professionally. Before she move away, I had my chance to do a few shoots with her (last entry in the bath tube). This entry is for 2 other shoots with her in editorial style.

The first one is called Faux Four, working with the amazing stylist Gerard Wilton and MUA Lesley Johnston. We did 4 looks for the shoot in 3 hours including changing makeup and hair.

This is my most favorite shot for all time. I used one bare 580EX to lit her up against the sun light behind her.

Reflector card works well, no need for flash. Kudos for the granny paints LOL

The second one is the following night, I went out shooting with Dave Reid and Ali Bromley in the freezing city night.

It was fun shooting at night playing with long shutter speed and flash. All was lit by bare flashes.

Remember if you work with bare flash and it not aiming in the right direction, it could create harsh shadow on model face by her nose or cheek. You can always touch them out and make the shadow soften. Clone Stamp would be your friend.

I Kissed A Girl

This shoot was responded from an assignment in CIT about a song. I chose the song "I Kiss A Girl" of Katty Perry to produce some image base on the lyric. But working with Dave Reid, a super amazingly talented makeup artist, we did create some thing very fantastic, well, at least in my opinion. We start shooting in the back seat of a Chrysler, a very luxury and spacious car. Most of the time I used only 1 reflector card to fill the subject.

We changed different looks on them:

The sun did good job as back lighting.

Then for the third look, we ran out of time so I need to setup my speedlite because there was no sun at that moment:

Melissa & Cordelia - Model shoot / Makeup by Kylie Bersinic

Kylie Bersinic, who is a very talented makeup artist in Canberra, asked me to do a shoot with her to expand her portfolio. Well, that's a good way to expand my portfolio working with talented people around me as well. Kylie brought one girl, Cordelia, who is not doing professional modeling, but has a very pretty face. And Elite Models sent me 1 model, Melissa, a gorgeous girl, to get her book updated. And Priya Chandra came to help with hair, she did an amazing job on those girls' hair.

I booked CIT studio to do this shoot but it was canceled in last minute (Dave called me in the night before the shoot to cancel it) then I had no choice to move the shoot into my house. Actually I didn't mind to do it at my house. We can do photoshoot everywhere as long as we know how to play with our lighting. So basically I used a white (a bit more yellow-white) wall as background and setup my flashes for this beauty shoot.

That made my lighting. I played a bit with color gels as well.

Lydia & Simone - Model shoot

This was a model portfolio shoot for Lydia and Simone, 2 beautiful models came from Elite Models Canberra. I told them bring only underwear for this shoot.

First lighting setup was a hikey one, easy with 2 heads and 2 white partitions.

1 head shoot through square softbox overhead and another one through zoom reflector shoot to the white CYC background (it was cover by the partition in this photo)

Alright, this time I'm gonna show photos only. There's not much to talk about. Natural lighting, gorgeous model and a beautiful winter day. I love this shoot, it has been a long time I haven't come out to do some natural portraits like this, well, not really glam like these, but yeah, most natural they are.

Chloe did makeup for herself as she's studying makeup in CMA.

Ok guys, haha, that title for the photoshoot was based on true weather in Asutralia when it was really freezing in winter last month. It's a bit warmer now when September comes and that spring comes as well but back then, it was so cold. When I walked to the studio, I check the forecast in my iPhone and it said -3°C, seriously I can breath fog as well in 9am. That's why I put that title for this shoot. And how's about "100°C inside"? You'll know soon

I'm so happy that we can access to CIT studio easier this semester. And we can play around with Broncolors, one of the best brand for lighting equipment in the world.
I have 3 models came in, Emma Wannell, Saira Mueller and Jodie Nixon. The theme, well, should be hot and sexy glamorous despite the winter coldness outside. That why "100°C inside" happen.

Emma Wannell

Easy lighting setup with one zoom reflector on boom over head, background was 2 white partitions put close together in end side. There is a lighting setup shot for this one, check it out.

Jodie Nixon

Then I change another lighting setup for next look of them, still played around with white partitions but this time I put a door in and switch key light to back light. The white partition did good job as a huge light reflector. Lens flare were accepted, well, that's my style as well.

Saira Mueller

Played with underexposed.

Another lighting setup, I kinda like this one. I used 2 partitions to block the light to create a very narrow and long light fall on the model and even on the CYC wall.

And the next lighting setup, again, white partitions and the props door, with 2 overhead zoom reflectors. There is a lighting setup shot for this one, check it out.

Last one, I play with a .. supermarket rack as cookies, LOL, to create some cross shadows on Saira:

And that's it. Working with 3 gorgeous models and various lighting setups, I've got heaps of photos after the shoot. But I was so lazy to edit them, as usual, so I just picked out a few good ones to post them here. More will come, well, when I get some spare time to do.

Melissa Tan - Tribal Princess

It was a shoot with Melissa Tan, a fantastic model who came from Malaysia. And this was our last chance working together before she traveled back to Malaysia when she finished her degree in Australia. We decided to go with the warrior / tribal style and Anna Dixon lent us some fabulous wardrobe and accessories that looked so good in the style I like.

This was the photoshoot I did in holidays with Elizabeth. We drive to Sydney and stay there for 2 days, walking around to do high fashion editorial - like fashion shoot. Assisted by Elizabeth's boyfriend, Sam, and 2 makeup artist, 1 hair stylist in Sydney, we create such a beautiful work, well in my opinion.

Make a studio shoot with speedlites

Hi guys, I'm sorry for not updating my blog for like, ages. Been busy a lot when semester ended then holidays was fantastic with Melbourne and Adelaide. Well I've been shooting a lot as well but I didn't have many time for blogging although I had many great results from photoshoots. I'm so glad to work with a lot talented people to create some such wonderful images. It seems that the poll on my blog shows result that you guys need more tips and tutorials. Very well, I've been always trying to remember to take setup shots for you guys, not in all of photoshoot but yeah I did.

Here is one of the shoot that I setup to use my speedlite as studio strobes to do beauty / makeup shots. Check out the photo first:

So, basically I used one speedlite fire through square softbox on a lightstand high above model head. I added another speedlite fire bounce to a white card board below model's face to fill the shadow under her chin. Here is the setup shot:

And yes, it call 'Hollywood lighting' a.k.a. 'Butterfly lighting'

So, let's move on the next lighting setup. Check out photo first:

A bit high key photo. And now, check out the lighting setup shot, you will figure it out:

Yep, 3 speedlites, 2 from both sides and another one to fill by bouncing to a white card board.

Then, let's move on the last lighting setup:

This is my most favorite shot of the day, I love how the light look very soft, the shadow in the middle of her face created 3D look but still have a few details in the shadow area, filled by a card board (hold by my girlfriend's sister)

And yes, that's it. You can see that we can always achieve all kind of artificial lighting by any mean any how. It could be continouse lighting, studio flash or small portable flash. The most importance thing is how we manage to put the light direction in the way we want. And that's it (again). I hope you guys like this little lighting tips I share to you and well, feel free to share me yours.

Hair shoot with Priya Chandra

Priya Chandra is a talented hair stylist that I've worked with her in a few photoshoot before. I especially love the shoot with her in CIT studio: http://lamtrancit.blogspot.com/2010/03/hair-shoot.html

This time she asked me to help her with her hair competition (again, another competition). I always love to do beauty and hair shoot so I worked it out with her.
We did a on-location shoot with 2 models, Ronise and Eden. We came to a large graffiti wall in Civic to do some of our first shots over there. But after tried with a few shots, I didn't really like that wall anymore so I asked them move to .... another wall.
This wall has some shadows on it, created by the sunlight went through the leaves so it might has the same effect with "cookies" or "gobo". Grab my chance, I quickly setup my flashes to shoot in front of this wall before the sun could be lower. And here is the lighting scheme:

I tried to make a nice sketch but I forgot to bring my Wacom tablet with me so I used the touch pad on my laptop to draw this haha it looks really bad but as long as everyone can get the idea about how I setup my flashes so it will be fine.
But here the explanation in words:
• SB-25 behind model left, shoot thru a grid.
• 580EX model right, bounce to a large white pillar over there (40cm each side I think)
So the main light was the sunlight coming directly on model face but diffused by the tree leaves above. The 580EX did its duty to be a fill light. The SB-25 did its duty to slightly add a little bit rim light. And the sun, once again, excellent in its duty, created interesting shadow on the background. With focal lengths around 180mm ~ 200mm and aperture at f/6.3 ~ f/7.1, I could make the shadow on the wall turn to be blurry.

So the result look like this:

Sam Rooney - Cricket Player

This shoot was for my assignment at school. We supposed to shoot a single portrait of a model to make it look like a magazine editorial. Most of other classmates try female model and do fashion. But I've done female models already in Group Portrait assignment (post will coming soon) so this time I decided to shoot a male model. And I ask Sam (he's boyfriend of Elizabeth Payne in the Ferrari shoot) to help me out with this assignment. And actually, Sam has been played cricket professional for a while so I decided to use that theme.

Here is the lighting setup:

Because I wanted to create a better wrap-around-highlight on Sam so I used 1 large square softbox on a boom and put it high above and on axis with the camera. I added 1 stripbox on camera left to add some more harsh rim light on Sam.
Please notice that we're not allowed to use flash for this assignment so all the lighting I used was only from modeling lamps. So basically, I shoot around f/4, ISO 400 and shutter speed 1/60th

And the results are:

For image processing, I only applied a little Burn and Dodge technique on this photo. Remember that the original photo should already have contrast in highlight and shadow to get more efficiency for this technique.

Anne Louise Clare Hackett - Model shoot

Anne is a new starting model who ask me to help her expand her portfolio. I was a bit busy with lots of school assignment at that time but I still managed to take her out for 2 hours shooting. Most of the time in the shoot I use natural lighting:

Anne has lovely eyes and innocent cute face so I asked her not to do so much posing, I want to focus on her emotional look only.
But at the end of the shoot, we found an alley outside a building and there was some giant tires over there could be good for props, then we ended up with this shoo, and I really like it:

In this photo I use 1 flash high above model right and another flash I put on the ground behind the tire.
For the photoshop effect, nothing special, Add Noise, Motion Blur and Overlay (you can easily figure it our, right?)

Emotional Dusk Lighting

Ok, I just want to share with you guys some small tips to create a very emotional 'dusk lighting' as I used in the shoot with Elizabeth Payne (View post here)

The point is, you should choose to use the ambient light very carefully and to do this, you need to get some lucks then, because not everyday could be a beautiful sunny day. So the first thing to do, you should do the shoot around 3:30pm to 5pm and it depends on the weather (it's Fall in Australia now so the sun come down very fast, different with summer, we still have sun light at 8pm).
The second thing is, adjust your White Balance setting into 5500K. If you use Auto White Balance to shoot when sunset, your camera will automatically adjust the color temperature into lower than 5000K to make your photo look 'cooler' against the 'warm' color temperature of the environment.

Then, use Color Balance in your Photoshop to adjust the color a bit (Image -> Adjustments -> Color Balance) with some setting like this:

You can see that it just slightly shift the color tone a bit to more yellow and red because I don't want to blend the color a lot and I still want to keep the color of the clothes as well.
Then use the final trick to make to photo look warmer: Photo Filter (Image -> Adjustments -> Photo Filter)

You can also want to use Hue / Saturation to give more saturation on Yellow and Red, but it depends on the photo you want to edit.

And that's it, now we can see the result:

Elizabeth Payne - Model shoot

This is a wonderful shoot with the gorgeous model: Elizabeth Payne. This time we had a Ferrari 512TR as props and to have a super car as props like that is so cool. Mark, the Ferrari's owner, also contributed himself as a model in some shots as well.
The first location is by the lake side near Old Parliament House of Canberra, there was a passage lead to the lake, surround by wooden walls. We parked the Ferrari on that passage to have some first shots with Elizabeth bikini:

Main light was a naked 580EX high above model to simulate sun light, 2 other small flashes around the car to create some more rim lights.

Main light bounced into the wall to create soft light on her, two other flashes was put low on the ground.

Then we move to the airport and parked on the upperfloor of a car park. This open space is perfect to have some shots with the sunlight and blue sky. Most of the time I used only ambient light.

The car made a very nice background for a high fashion shoot.

This shot I use the rear car hood as a 'gobo' to let the sun went through. I love Elizabeth's look in this shot.

Allura Maison - Model shoot

A shoot I had on this Wednesday, with Allura, a very talented and beautiful model. This time we got Beau & Arrow label for wardrobe and I love their dresses, very cute, feminine and sexy.

We had some shoot at Dendy car park first, I love how natural light falls off on the model.

Then we moved to Braddon to shoot in an alley created by 2 building. I tried to make my flash falls on Allura as sun light so I use bare flash, power at 1/2, 6 meters far from her and open wide at 24m. I think it worked.

Finally we move to a corner in front of Uni Lodge, this time I use the cars' headlights as backlight.

Bonus:

• For the shot at the alley, there was a car in the photo, I need to removed it by Photoshop just because it was there like an hour and didn't move anywhere else. You can also notice that I 'enhance' Allura hair a bit to make her hair look more glamourous.

Look at the crop image again to see if you can tell that some more parts of her hair were drawn by Photoshop.

Clint Domine - Model Shoot

I had a shoot with Clint last week. He was a very good model and his figure looks so cool on the photos. Plus he was mixed from Vietnamese & French so he has a very orientation look. We drove to Bungadore and tended to have a shoot at the rail station but we had trouble with a security guard there, he said we need permission to take photo in that area and after we made about 10 calls around, we found out that we need to fill a form to ask for permission and it would take about ... 1 week for feedback. We gave up Bungadore and drove back to Fyshwick. On the way back, we stopped at a rail bridge that look very cool and had some shots over there.

Someone told a joke that Clint looks like the Hulk in this photo haha but I think his muscles look so cool.

Then we came to a junkyard in Fyshwick and had our shoot over there and that was the last location:

I used harsh lighting on him because I wanted to create a very rough & strong look for a male model. I didn't even need to retouch his skin so smooth as I did in other photos of femal models.

From this location I used 2 lights most of time to create some kind of cross lighting on Clint.

2 naked flashed behind 2 sides of model, created strong highlight on each of his side.

For the last shot, I told Clint to stay behind his wheel inside his Supra and I will shoot from outside. I used the light to create a little bit feel of cinematic scene. 16:9 is a very good crop on this one. I also change to color tone to make it look like a movie captured.
