Republic Day, celebrated on January 26th every year, is one of India’s most important national events. It was on January 26th, 1950 that the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state. On this day, India finally enjoyed the freedom of spirit, rule of law and fundamental principle of governance. The patriotic fervor of the Indian people on this day brings the whole country together even in her embedded diversity.

Republic Day is a people’s day in a variety of ways:

It’s when regional identity takes a backseat and what matters most is the universal appeal of unity and brotherhood projected by all Indians. The Indian constitution basically stands for the aspirations which ‘the common man of India’ cherishes.

Republic Day is a day of the citizen of the country when he is entitled to be ‘all supreme. Republic Day is celebrated most majestically in the capital, New Delhi, where symbols of the great nation’s military might and cultural wealth are displayed in what is the world’s most impressive parade. All Government buildings are illuminated lending the city the atmosphere of a fairyland. This day is celebrated with much zeal and pride all across the nation.

Today is also Australia Day (previously known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day and ANA Day), and also referred to as Invasion Day by several groups within Australian society, is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788, the hoisting of the British flag there, and the proclamation of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia.

Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and arts, represents the free flow of wisdom and consciousness. She is the mother of the Vedas, and chants to her, called the ‘Saraswati Vandana‘ often begin and end Vedic lessons.

Saraswati is the daughter of Lord Shiva and Goddess Durga. It is believed that goddess Saraswati endows human beings with the powers of speech, wisdom and learning. She has four hands representing four aspects of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness and ego. She has sacred scriptures in one hand and a lotus – the symbol of true knowledge – in the second.

With her other two hands she plays the music of love and life on a string instrument called the Veena. She is dressed in white – the symbol of purity – and rides on a white swan – symbolizing Sattwa Guna or purity and discrimination. Saraswati is also a prominent figure in Buddhist iconography – the consort of Manjushri.

The learned and the erudite attach greater importance to the worship of goddess Saraswati. As a practice, only educated people worship her for knowledge and wisdom. They believe that only Saraswati can grant them ‘moksha‘ – the final liberation of the soul.

Saraswati’s birthday, Vasant Panchami – is a Hindu festival celebrated every year on the 5th day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Magha. Hindus celebrate this festival with great fervor in temples, homes and educational institutes alike.

December 26, 2009 marks the 5th year of the Indian Ocean Tsunami that spread havoc across nations.

REUTERS – The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was caused by a major earthquake under the seafloor north of Aceh in Sumatra. Scientists say another massive undersea earthquake is long overdue beneath the Mentawai islands in Indonesia and could trigger another deadly tsunami anytime.

HOW TSUNAMIS OCCUR

In the Sumatra area, the tectonic plates meet in a subduction zone, where the boundaries of one plate are forced beneath the other plate. The Indo-Australian plate is sliding northeastward (at about 7 cm per year) and dipping under the Eurasian plate, along a fault line called the Sunda megathrust which runs southwest from Myanmar down Indonesia towards Timor.

Tremendous geological strain builds up, over many decades or even longer than a century, until a section of the megathrust gives way. This rupture causes the oceanic plates beneath Sumatra to lurch forward suddenly, by many metres, in a big earthquake.

If the ocean floor ruptures, it suddenly moves a massive amount of water. This is what happened in the earthquake that caused the deadly Indian Ocean tsunamis of December 2004.

The water displaced by the Aceh earthquake was like tipping out the volume of Sydney Harbour within a few minutes.

Major quakes that rupture the ocean floor are usually shallow quakes occuring at a depth of less than 70 km (44 miles). The quake that caused the 2004 tsunami was 30 km below the seafloor.

TSUNAMIS RISE UP

On the ocean surface, tsunamis start as an insignificant ripple capable of passing under a ship unnoticed, but they become giants as they approach land and the ocean becomes shallow.

A tsunami is not a single wave, but a series of waves. They can travel across the ocean at speeds of up to 1,000 km (620 miles) an hour, the speed of a jet aircraft.

The vast size of the Pacific Ocean and the large earthquakes associated with the “Ring of Fire” combine to produce deadly tsunamis in the Asia-Pacfic. A tsunami can travel across the Pacific Ocean in less than a day.

As the waves approaches land, the ocean recedes dramatically exposing reefs, as the waves draw the water out.

As the trough of the wave drags along the sea floor, slowing it down, the crest rises up dramatically and sends a giant wall of whitewater onto land. The first wave may not be the biggest.

The destructive force of a tsunami comes not from the height of the wave, but from the volume of water moving. It is as if the ocean floods the coast, smashing everything in its path, and then just as quickly recedes. Many people who survive the initial wave impact are washed out to sea as the tsunami recedes.

WORLD’S WORST TSUNAMIS

The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami was the world’s most deadly, killing around 226,000 people, with a wave height about 100 feet.

The world’s biggest tsunami, caused by a magnitude 8 quake which caused a massive landslide, hit the remote Lituya Bay in Alaska on July 9, 1958. As the wave swept through Lituya Bay, it was forced to rise up, reaching an estimated height of 1,720 feet on the other side of the bay, becoming a mega-tsunami. The sparsely populated bay was devastated, but damage was localised.

The Krakatau island volcanic eruption of 1883 generated giant waves reaching heights of 125 feet, killing some 30,000 people. It was the most violent volcanic eruption in modern history.

As far as colors are so unnoticeable, you may not wear any make-up at all. When it comes to lipstick, choose a pastel color. You may use it on your way to work. If the stripes won’t be very accurate, don’t worry nobody will notice it, for it’s a natural color.

Nothing and nobody will be able to help you become pretty if you eat unhealthy food, don’t get enough sleep or have too much stress. If some of these problems exist, try to solve them somehow. You may find something tasty, easily prepared and healthy at the same time. If you can’t get a good night sleep go see your doctor; it may be a serious problem, however if it’s not, the doctor will at least advise you on how to improve your sleep quality. Try to avoid every situation that may because you stress, if you can’t – try to talk to somebody, think positively and relax just as you leave a stressful location.

If you don’t have enough time to match every single detail in your style, change your clothing to something simple, youthful or maybe even shaggy. Such clothes are very comfortable, they don’t need to be ironed every single day and they will make you look younger! Such style together with a simple and fashionable hairdo and make-up will make you look trendy.

You can decide how much time to spend looking at mirror. If you keep your body fresh every day, take a good care of it, choose your make-up and hairdo properly, you’ll need only 10 minutes to be ready. Moreover, if you’re happy, don’t let stress and bad mood control you, you will be beautiful as you are and won’t need any special make-ups, hairdos or clothing to look pretty.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the non-profit group that oversees domain names, is holding a meeting this week in Seoul. Domain names are the monikers behind every website, email address and Twitter post, such as ‘.com’ and other suffixes.

One of the key issues to be taken up by ICANN’s board is whether to allow for the first time entire internet addresses to be in scripts not based on Latin letters. That could open up the web to more people around the world as addresses could be in characters as diverse as Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Greek, Hindi and Cyrillic in which Russian is written.

This is the biggest change technically to the internet since it was invented 40 years ago. If the change is approved, ICANN would begin accepting applications for non-Latin domain names and that the first entries into the system would likely come sometime in mid 2010.
