One of my guilty pleasures, is watching the old episodes of “Life”. “Life” had an unceremoniously short live run on the peacock network “NBC”. The series was canceled after two seasons. The show featured a cop that was wrongly sentenced to life in prison for murders he didn’t commit, only to have his sentence thrown out after spending twelve at Pelican Bay. Terms of release included a large financial settlement and the opportunity to be a detective on the same police force that turned on him. What made “Life” such a fascinating show was the quirkiness of the Charlie Crews. While in prison, he discovered Zen and had a lot of Charlism, while solving cases. The other cool thing is that while he is solving cases during each episode, he is slowly piecing the puzzle together to discover how and why he was framed for those murders. As a closet student on studying everything Zen, I found myself connecting to the philosophical ramblings of Detective Charlie Crews. It is my goal moving forward to plaster this website from time to time with Charlism and other Zenful ramblings that I enjoy.

My favorite quote from Charlie Crews is this one:

You don’t have to understand here, to be here.

After spending a week being lame, I am back in front of my computer motivated to post a new blog. Last DVD Tuesday, was a very cool day. The release of Star Trek on Blu Ray/DVD was front and foremost on most movie aficionados minds. However, for this lame fan boy, there was another important movie being released on Blu ray and that movie was Tyler Durden….er I meant Fight Club. To be honest, your not gaining much by purchasing Fight Club on Blu Ray, if you already have the DVD. The significance of the re-release, is the reminder of how frickin cool and ahead of the curve the movie was when it hit the theaters 10 yrs ago. It was the ultimate misfit manifesto, a dark and cool window of how a misfit for once in his miserable life is one of the cool kids. I fondly remember that most critics of the movie could not get beyond the violence in the movie. I found the fight scenes to be totally cool; however, it was the dialogue that made the movie for me. It was the dialogue, that I could relate to. I was in a weird space in my life, and Fight Club was a warm snuggy blanket. Tyler Durden was the epitome of cool, the ultimate wild child. He thumbed his nose against authority, lived by his own mantra, and was hell bent on causing mayhem. There are few misfits in life that haven’t at one time or another haven’t fantasized about being cool like Tyler Durden. If you haven’t seen Fight Club, or don’t remember the movie, I recommend you bring back Tyler Durden for another fantastic ride.

Strippers in a brightly lit mobile environment, why didn’t I think of that idea. I came across this article yesterday while doing some meaningful web surfing. Here are some excerpts from the article itself.

“It’s the ultimate advertising vehicle, said Larry Beard, marketing director for Déjà Vu Showgirls. Having run the truck up and down the Strip late at night and into the wee hours for only the past 11 days, he claims it has doubled business at the all-nude Déjà Vu and Little Darlings gentlemen’s clubs.”

“This is what Las Vegas is all about,” said Beard, marketing director for six business entities including Déjà Vu Showgirls, Little Darlings and Hustler Topless gentlemen’s clubs. “You come here to see something you can’t see anywhere else in the world.”

I have my fingers crossed about the upcoming new movie from the Matrix thinktank, Ninja Assassin. On the surface, the movie looks like it is going to be a blast to watch. A rogue Ninja assassin movie by the Matrix think tank should be a match made in heaven. I will have to be the first to admit that this movie was not on my geek movie radar. One day while I was googling for some Matrix quotes, I came across a link talking about a new Wachowski Brothers movie. I checked the trailer out, and saw enough good stuff about it, that I will check the movie out. Shooting from the hip, some of the action sequences reminds me of two of my favorite anime movies, Ninja Scroll and Crying Freeman. Both anime movies are ultra violent and deal with characters that exist in secret societies. I had always hoped that a live action hollywood version of both movies would be created. As with a lot of popular manga/anime, there are lot of good content to make a decent movie “Crossing my fingers about Cowboy Bebop.” If Ninja Assassin turns out to be a home run for the Wachowski Brothers, maybe I will see Ninja Scroll or Crying Freeman in the theaters someday soon.

ON OCTOBER 6, THE PLANET BLACKED OUT FOR TWO MINUTES AND SEVENTEEN SECONDS THE WHOLE WORLD SAW THEIR FUTURE
How cool is that for an opening. If you haven’t seen this show, I suggest you run to Hulu, Boxee, Apple TV and get caught up. The show airs on ABC, Thursday at 8 pm. This show is the perfect filler for me while I wait for the return of LOST and 24. The first seven episodes has been full of intense action, swerves, holy sh!t moments as well as tender moments. Each episode leaves you anxiously waiting for the next one which is something that is a good thing for ABC.

Flashforward the TV Series is based on the novel Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer: where the consciousness of the human population is flung 21 years into the future for two minutes. Although some who see the vision are resigned to their eventual fates or actively seek them out, there are those who quickly prove that the future isn’t set in stone — by killing themselves so their visions cannot come to pass.

Graphic novels can be considered the warm fuzzy sweater for Fan Boys. The stories written for graphic novels are usually very engaging to read. Strong story line, character depth with stunning visuals is one of the reason why I enjoy reading graphic novels. Over the past few years graphic novels have been a supply line for many popular movies with mixed results. For example, Constantine is a great graphic novel, the film adaptation not so good. On the other end of the spectrum, “Watchmen” which is considered to be the greatest graphic novel of all time, film adaptation was respectable. Over the past several years, I will usually engage myself with a good graphic novel or two.

While cleaning up my office the other day, I came across my lost volume 5 of Preacher. Quickly thumbing through the pages, caused me to remember what a joy it was to read Preacher. Preacher is a graphic novel written by Garth Ennis, it’s an epic story of a preacher possessed by the unholy creation from a Angel and Demon pro-creating. Throw in a vampire, hit woman, Angels living on earth, secret Christ society, Preacher is one wild weird ride. I doubt there will ever be a movie made that would truly represent the weirdness of the graphic novel and for that I am glad. A few years ago, HBO did dance with the idea of doing a series based on the graphic novel but decided against it. Once again I am glad, because due to the graphic novel violence, we would get a toned down version of the story. A toned down version would strip away the essence behind what I think is a great story.

I suggest that you check out volume 1 of the nine volume set and begin your journey into beautiful weirdness

I am settling all my affairs before December 12, 2012, after all if the Mayans are right, our world will be drastically different come December 13th. The good news is that hollywood has jumped the gun, and have given us a pre-cursor of what the world could be like if the Mayans are right. 2012: The Movie blesses our movie theaters this Friday. I have to admit when I first saw the trailer last year, I thought to myself, I have seen this movie before, it was called “The Day After”. Huge tidal waves, been there done that, countless Godzilla movies, along with other disaster movies. However, as the promotion for the movie drew near, they seemed to ramp up the trailers. The sequence that shows the limousine racing to the airplane, and the airplane flying around the city as it falls apart is breath taking. I figured that even if the rest of the movie suck, watching that sequence alone will be worth the price of popcorn. I look forward to seeing this movie.

I was cruising around ye ole cable box the other day when I came upon a movie, that I hadn’t seen in years. Grandma’s Boy isn’t a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but I find it entertaining on so many levels. First and foremost, it is a movie about a bunch of slackers who test video games, how can I as a fan boy not enjoy that. Add in a monkey, crude humor and some wake and bake, the movie is an enjoyable way to waste a couple of hours. I recommend that if you don’t have this movie on DVD already that you go out add this one to your collection.

I have to admit that I have a twisted addiction to cheesy movies. A few weeks ago, I cruising the net when I came upon Mania website displaying a review for the Lesbian Vampire Killers. My immediate thought was that with a title like this and since it appears to be one of the straight for DVD variety, this movie must be sinfully bad. Sinfully bad is my kind of cheese. After viewing the movie, I was absolutely right. Without giving too much away, Lesbian Vampire Killers is a pretty good combination of cheese. Add two parts Showtime lesbian flix, three parts “worse vampire movie you ever saw”, and one part Shaun of the Dead “comedy input”, that is what you have in Lesbian Vampire Killers. My kind of cheese, sinfully gooey, and mildly entertaining.

OCTOBER 6–Meet Jackie Knott. The Alabama woman, 37, is facing a child endangerment rap for allegedly having her teenage daughter ride in a cardboard box atop her minivan as it traveled along an highway Saturday morning. Knott, pictured in the below Albertville Police Department mug shot, told cops that her 13-year-old daughter Haley was serving as a human paperweight to keep the box from falling off the vehicle (and careening down U.S. 431). While Knott explained that the box was too large to fit inside her van, it is unclear why she did not seek to simply flatten it in an effort to squeeze the box into her crowded vehicle. When stopped by cops, Knott, a Boaz, Alabama resident, noted that “the box was tied to the van with a clothes hanger,” according to a police press release. That assurance did not sway cops, who arrested Knott in the shadow of a Tyson Foods poultry processing facility, according to an October 3 police report.
