OSHA Compliance for Your Lamp Recycling Program

There is no issue more important, or more challenging to facility managers than safety within their operations. Did you know that President Obama signed legislation allowing a 150% increase in maximum penalties associated with regulatory citations? According to Facilities Management Decisions, this could mean that a minor to serious violation could jump from $7,000 to $12,500 in fines, or from $70,000 to $125,000 for repeat of willful violations.

When it comes to handling fluorescent and other mercury containing lighting, there are two risks that must be addressed in your management plan. These lighting wastes are made of glass and easily broken, which introduces the risk of handling shards of glass. Additionally, since fluorescent lighting is under vacuum, they implode and often impact multiple lamps if they are being stored together in one container. How To Safely Seal Your EasyPak VaporShield Containers

Our products and services are designed to make recycling more convenient, safe, and cost-effective for organizations of all sizes. To ensure the safety of all employees and carriers who handle your EasyPak containers from the moment they hold their first fluorescent bulb, to arriving at a certified recycling facility, it is important to follow all of the instructions included on your EasyPak VaporShield Box. That means not only properly assembling the container, but also making sure that the container is properly sealed before shipment.

Need a helpful reminder? Print out these instructions to keep handy while you’re packing fluorescent bulbs for shipment.

When assembling your box for the first time, press the end cap into one end of the center section.
Remove the white strips from the pressure sensitive tape on the first end cap, and press the folds firmly along the sides of the center section.
Seal end cap to container with 3” wide box tape. Seal all edges and corners for shipping. Make several wraps around the intersection of the end cap and center section of the box to create a tight seal. Tape should cover all of the creases created by the end cap.
Press firmly on the tape to ensure that it adheres.
When you begin to fill the box with spent lamps, be sure to write the accumulation start date in the box on the side of the center section.
If the box is not entirely filled, insert the end cap into the open end of the center section without taping. This will keep the box closed when not in use.
When the box is filled with linear fluorescent lamps, press the end cap down onto the center section until the lamps pierce the first layer of cardboard on the end cap, holding the bulbs in place.
Remove the white strips from the pressure sensitive tape located on the underside of the end cap, and press the folds firmly along the sides of the center section.
Repeat steps three and four to the opposite end cap to ensure a secure seal.

Do Travelers Care About Staying With Green Hotels?

According to a survey by Forbes Magazine, 62 percent of travelers either always or often consider the environment when choosing a hotel, transportation, or restaurant. The survey also shows that 69 percent say they plan to make even more eco-friendly choices in the next 12 months.

The majority of respondents agreed that hotels could do a better job of publicizing their green initiatives. In fact, most revealed that they rarely or never felt informed about whether hotels are truly eco-friendly. We’d like to believe that hotels practice environmental sustainability for the sake of our environment, but with more heads in beds, who could argue with this survey?

Free Webinar: New OSHA Hazard Communication Standard

Last year, the US Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) enacted a new Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). According to OSHA, the update to the HCS "provides a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets." The update brings the HCS from a "right to know" into a "right to understand" paradigm and is estimated to affect 40 million US workers.

New Pennsylvania E-Waste Law Starts Jan. 24

Beginning January 24, 2013 a new law in Pennsylvania will go into effect that prohibits the disposal of most electronic wastes in landfills through the normal trash system, according to this article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Instead, electronics covered by the law will need to be recycled.

Devices covered by the new law, called the Covered Device Recycling Act, include spent televisions, desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors, accessories such as printers, and tablet computers such as iPads or Kindles.
